MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR

Hi Lions, Lionesses, Leos and Lady Lions,

"If you want to be successful, it's just this simple. Know what you are doing. Love what you are doing. And

believe in what you are doing." Will Rogers"

It has been a busy month of visiting clubs. I thank all the clubs for their hospitality and snacks. Thank you

for all the wonderful service projects you are participating in and the fellowship as well. Thanks also for the

new members that I inducted this last month.

Last reminder for Mid Year. Hope to see many new faces and to have a great learning and fellowship

weekend.

I was working at the Brown School Fete when a gentleman asked me to smile and we go talking. Before he

left he asked me if we were similar to the Free Mason. My jaw dropped and said no where the same. We are

too secretive need more exposure some how.

International President Barry asked all the DG's to bring in members. He as already brought in 4 new

members that he promised at International. I have brought a potential member to our club. Let us all try to

bring in one member and retain, respect our old members.

Here is something for all Lions to read and keep near when you wonder why:

"Why we volunteer"

It's not for money, nor for Fame

Nor for any personal gain

It's just for love of fellow man

and just to lend a helping hand

It's just to give up thyself

Something you cannot buy with wealth

Not for medals won with pride

But just for feeling deep inside

The due reward deep in your heart

The feeling you have been a part

Of Helping others far and near

That's what makes a volunteer.

Hope you all have a wonderful month of growth, service and fellowship

Yours in Lionism

DG Heather

On Friday 30th August a membership drive was held at the Old Pont Holiday Resort in Port Edward with the aim of forming a Lions Club Branch in the area. Despite the very cold and rainy weather, 6 locals made the effort to attend. PDG Denis Meyer showed an interesting Lions recruitment video and gave a talk on Lionism. The gathering was well supported by the Sheppie Clan with Lions Kevin Ross, Jeff Smith, Jean Masson, Martin Rundle, Wayne Skinner, Andre Beneke and Mike Davidson travelling there and supporting this great initiative. All the visitors expressed an interest in joining Lionism and a second organisational meeting will be held in the near future.

A few old couples used to get together to talk about life and to have a good time .One day one of the men,

Harry, started talking about this fantastic restaurant he went to the other night with his wife. “Really?”

one of the men said, what’s it called? After thinking for a few seconds the Harry said, “What are those

good smelling flowers called again?” “Do you mean a rose? The first man questioned. “Yes that’s it,” he

exclaimed. Looking over at his wife he said, “Rose what’s that restaurant we went to the other night?”

CLUB PROJECTS AND FUNDRAISERS

PORT SHEPSTONE

Port Shepstone Lions once again hosted the National Association of Blind Bowlers Tournament which was held at the Uvongo Bowling Club during the weekend on 31 August/1st September. A number of blind bowlers travelled down to the South Coast to participate in this annual tournament. Port Shepstone Lions became involved with the NABB - National Association of Blind Bowlers (KZN Region) in 1981 during the "Year of the Disabled". The annual weekend tournament means a great deal to the blind bowlers and for the past 32 years the Port Shepstone Lions have sponsored the competition. Apart from the games, the weekend includes accommodation and meals. The Port Shepstone Lion Ladies provided and served dinner on the Saturday evening. The Club is indebted to their main sponsor, National Braiding Industries as well as Spec Savers, Port Shepstone and Key Software for providing sponsorship for this event. During his opening speech, Club President Lion Andre Beneke paid tribute to the sponsors as well as to Lion Hans Wagenaar who, for the past 27 years, has single handily organised and run this event. Lion Hans was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation as well as a Lions 25 years long service award pin by Lion President Andre.

LEADERSHIP RETREAT.

Port Shepstone Lions hosted their 27th Annual Leadership Retreat from 13-15 September

at Camp Anerley. The weekend program commenced with a talk on Lions Clubs International

presented by Past District Governor Denis Meyer. This was followed by the official

opening address of Club President Andre Beneke. The group was thereafter broken up into

5 colour coded teams and took part in team-building exercises.

The group had an early rise on the Saturday morning for exercises and a delicious

breakfast prepared by the Lion Ladies. Then it was down to business, with lectures on

leadership theory, communication, goal setting, innovative engineering, people to

people relationships and conflict management. The various presenters included Pastor

Trevor Downham, Mr Chad Broom, Miss Kerry Mc Killen, Lions Rob Bing and Peter Mc

Killen. After lunch the group participated in a very enjoyable and challenging “Amazing

Race” together with many Lions and Lion Ladies who acted as marshals throughout the

course.

The guest speaker for the Lions’ formal dinner held at Port Shepstone Country Club was

Mrs Di Van Dyk who motivated everyone present with her inspiring words.

On Sunday, the group had an early start for exercise and a delicious breakfast prepared

by the Lion Ladies. Then morning devotions and more lectures on motivation/choices

presented by Lion Hilton Horsley. The afternoon session was dominated by the strenuous

and very enjoyable obstacle course which was marshalled with much laughter by all Lions

present. The entire project was fully funded by the Club's charity account and with

generous sponsorships and support. Leadership development of our youth is one of the

core projects of Lions Clubs International.

NEWCASTLE TREE PLANTING ARBOUR WEEK

We planted trees at a little school called Esperanza for children with disabilities and

also planted trees at the Rapha Centre which houses people who can't afford living by

themselves. The residents got involved in helping us and a great time was had by all.

SCOTTBURGH

The Scottburgh Lions Club has been helping the Vulindlela crèche in Malengeni for several years. Recently

their swings had broken and so the Lions set about repairing them. New ropes and seats were installed so

that the kiddies could continue enjoying their playtime at the crèche.

They also donated a Pennel water tank – Lion President Bernie Orth looks satisfied

We were off to Underberg (no longer a Lions Club there). Fortunately we had a Vito to

take up the blankets, stationary etc. spent Friday evening sorting out goodie

We spent the weekend at Umkumzintu Lodge, which is a beautiful place and they were so good to us. It was an early start on Saturday with temps well under the minus mark and

deep frost that made it quite a job to get the vehicle out of the grounds of the lodge

and some of us not wanting to move from the heaters. With the help of people there we

went to 2 schools, we had a fantastic time giving out blankets beanies, stationary,

face cloths soap and juice to 400 kids. It was so heart warming to see what they achieve with nothing to work with, they have

no chairs and the kids sit on the polished floors.

We are planning to go back in the warmer months to do renovation work for them

COWIES HILL EDITH BENSON CHILDRENS HOME.

What a wonderful day we had on Tuesday the 24

th September at the Edith Benson Babies Home. When we had been

there to do a previous project we saw the unused Wendy House on the grounds of their property but behind the fence of the grounds where the children play. We decided to take down part of the existing fence and put a new one up so that the Wendy house was included in the playing area. We arrived with picks, spades, saws, drills and of course the wood for the fence as well as with cleaning materials and paint for the Wendy house. We also provided lunch and

juice for the staff and children. There is a lot still to be done so we will be going back soon to try and complete the project.

PLANTING TREES AT LAHEE PARK

Although we did not get to plant trees during Arbour week we decided that we would plant 4 trees at the KZN Cycle Academy in Lahee Park in Pinetown on Saturday the 21

st. It was a miserable day with rain, howling wind and

extremely cold, the ground was rock hard but we managed to get all 4 of the trees planted.

NORTH DURBAN BLANKET PROJECT

Lion Neil Aubert has been supplying food parcels from the North Durban Lions club to the residents of Alton Court in Durban's Point Road area for nearly 6 years. Most of the residents survive on a small pension and live under very poor conditions so they look forward to the monthly food parcels with great anticipation. If Lion Neil is not on schedule with delivery the phone calls start very quickly so it was a great pleasure to be able to give them each a warm blanket donated by the Durban North branch of Nedbank which were very gratefully received.

BRAAI DAY AT TAFTA

The North Durban Lions supplied a braai for the 120 residents of TAFTA on Ridge, providing beef and chicken burgers and salads. The residents really enjoyed it, with several saying it was the best meal they had had in more than 5 years. A braai is a very rare treat for the residents and it was very rewarding to see the great joy a simple braai brought to the home.

SHELLY BEACH

Lions Harry Hoenselaar (left), Gordon Turner and Melvin the Mascot

The Shelly Beach Lions continued with the drive for food collection towards our

Dumisani Crèche Feeding Scheme by hosting a braai day at the Shelly Beach Spar. Funds

were raised towards food collection through the sale of boerewors rolls to the public,

with over R1000 raised in a morning as well as food donations from the public which

were collected in the Lions’ food collection trolley. Melvin the Lion was also invited

to attend the event and added a fun element to the morning’s activities for the kids.

This will be an ongoing project to assist with fundraising towards food collection.

BROWN SCHOOL FETE The Brown School in Pinetown is a school for special needs children

and every year on the first Saturday in September hold a fete which is

their main fundraiser for the year. Service Clubs from the greater

Pinetown area run food stalls where all monies raised are donated to the

school. For many years the Lions Club of Cowies Hill and Durban Host

have worked with the school and a couple of years ago Durban East Coast

Lions came on board. It is a great day and a privilege to assist with

this huge fundraiser for the school.

YOUTH EXCHANGE (This letter, with thanks from Australia MD 201)

My Lions Youth Camp Adventure Lions Clubs International

Multiple District 201 – Australia

-- Camp Krokodile -- Lions Youth Camp and Exchange Program

Lions Clubs International offers the most wonderful opportunities to young people and I am one of those fortunate enough to have experienced this first hand. My name is Stephanie Kennaugh and I am President of the Margaret River Leos Club of Western Australia. I am a Charter member of the Club which commenced in 2013. As a reward for winning the Lions Australia local and District 201W2 Youth of The Year (YOTY) competitions, my local Lions Club of Margaret River generously sponsored me to attend Camp Krokodile in Currimundi on Sunshine Coast, Queensland. When I found out that I was going to a Lions Youth Camp on the opposite side of Australia to Western Australia, I was ecstatic. Lions Australia has four youth camps – all held annually in late July – situated in the Whitsundays (Camp Kanga) , Sunshine Coast (Camp Krokodile), Wyong (Camp Kookaburra) and just out of Melbourne in Queenscliff (Camp Koala). The camps attract international Lions youth exchangees from around the world. A few Australian youth are able to join Camp Krokodile for a week of multicultural fun, sun, water sports and more. The main focus is developing team building skills and broadening cultural awareness and perspectives of not only Australia, but the world. At Camp Krokodile, I was one of only two Australian youth. There were 30 participants in total, including new friends I have made from the USA, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Finland, Turkey, Mexico and even the Netherlands. Each night, we worked in groups to give a cultural presentation on our countries, after a day of team-building activities. I have lived in Australia my whole life, but having the opportunity to participate in camp activities -- visiting Australia Zoo, Aussie World, Underwater World, Hinterland, going stand-up paddle boarding, surfing, canoeing, high roping, dragon boating, giant swinging -- was more than amazing. Our group became such a coordinated team that a week seemed to last much longer, and we all felt as though we had known each other for years. and the world broadly and kindly it will treat you the same way. Leos has helped me to achieve this, and Lions Australia has given me the capability to reach my goals. I joined for this reason, but there are so many more reasons to join. LIONS YOUTH EXCHANGE. TRY IT. YOU WILL ENJOY IT.

Page 15: Lions District 410c Monthly Newsletter - September 2013 Edition

15

It was so beautiful to receive the gift of knowledge from each and everyone who attended the camp, and so fulfilling to realise that there are people all over the world who come together under the blue and yellow symbol of Lions International.

Lions gave me an incredible opportunity to learn that no matter where we are from or what our home

countries are like we all have something in common.

PICTURED ABOVE LEFT WITH CAMP KROKODILE FRIENDS

This is why I encourage each and every one of you who reads this flyer to become involved with your local Lions club, or to start up a Leo’s club in your own community like I have worked hard to achieve. It will open the door to so many opportunities and you will gain so much yourself. Knowing you can give back to someone else is one of the most rewarding things you can ever do, wherever and whoever you are. It broadens your perspectives and allows you to meet so many new people. And as I tell my Leos every time we meet, if you can learn to give back to the community

Leadership. Experience. Opportunity. These are just a few of the rewards young people gain from participating in

Leos. With more than 150,000 young people in 139 countries volunteering as part of this organization, whether in Alpha (ages 12-18) or Omega (ages 18-30), Leos are there to help, to develop and contribute to society. I can say personally, whether it is in cleaning a beach or helping with a Lions garage sale, how invaluable this work is. It will be life-changing. I am very thankful to my local Lions Club of Margaret River for sending me to Camp Krokodile, and Lions District 201Q3 on the Sunshine Coast for staging the camp for the world’s youth. More importantly I would like to thank Lion Beryl Anderson of Margaret River Lions in District 201W2 for being my mentor and guiding myself and the Margaret River Leos in rising to their feet. Teenagers need support from their community and Lions in District 201W2 should

be applauded for their involvement with youth.

Finally, I encourage everyone – if you are offered an opportunity, SEIZE IT.

eThekwini South Lions Fundraising project (please support)

THE TEE BREAK BRAIN TEASER: Objective:

eThekweni South Lions have decided to manufacture and sell the “Tee-Break

Brain Teaser” as one of our fundraising projects.

We intend selling the units to Lions Clubs as well as individuals, businesses

etc.

We would like to see the Brain Teaser in all Old Age Homes, Doctors Waiting

Rooms, Restaurants, Hospitals, Mom’s handbag etc. The list is endless and it

could be used just about anywhere.

What is it:

The Brain Teaser is a relaxing, easy game that can be played by all.

1. It is a wooden triangle with 15 holes.

2. Fourteen holes have golf tees occupying them and the 15th hole is left

blank.

3. The aim is to “jump” one tee over any adjacent tee in a similar way that

one would in a game of Checkers. The direction of the jump does not

matter.

4. Once the tee is “jumped”, it is removed from the play area.

5. The aim of the game is to jump over all the tees until only 1 tee is left.

Leave four tees: You’re just plain “EG-NO-RA-MOOSE”

Leave three tees: You’re just plain....

Leave two tees: You’re pretty smart

Leave one tees: YOU BREAK WELL!!!

Please support eThekwini with their fundraiser and see the Brain Teaser. This is great way of getting the

Lions Logo out there. We are selling the BRAIN TEASER at R15.00 per game. Clubs can purchase the

Brain Teaser games and then re-sell them at a suggested retail price of R25 or donate them to various Old

Age Homes or Children’s homes that could put them to good use.

Hello All

Once again I would like to thank those clubs that have sent in articles for this District magazine, it really is

appreciated.

Please can I remind those of you that have not sent in articles to please do so? We really need to consider

ourselves the District 410c Team, and teams share ideas and work together to improve their “business”. We

need to improve our Lions clubs so that we can provide more Service and grow our membership (and this is

desperate if we don’t want to redistrict in the near future).

So please let’s work together, share ideas for projects and fundraisers and invite friends and family along to

help at projects to try and get them to become members of our amazing Club. REMEMBER: We are all part

of a World Wide Association and not autonomous, there are protocols to observe and rules that are part of

this amazing association we belong to.

District Governor Heather is really trying hard to encourage us; she keeps in touch with the clubs regularly

and really needs the support of each and every Lion so please support her as much as you can. Remember

support also means that minutes, MMR’s and Activities reports need to be completed every month and

emailed to Cabinet and extremely important is that all dues are paid.

Don’t forget as you do a project or fundraiser to send your photographs with a short story on the project to

me at the email address below.

Yours in Service
