Six Reasons Why a Little Glass of Wine Each Day May Do You Good

The list of wines benefi ts is long—and getting more surpris-ing all the time. Already well-known as heart healthy, wine in moderation might help you lose weight, reduce forgetfulness, boost your immunity, and help prevent bone loss.

With wine consumption al-ready on a surge in Fiji and the Pacifi c Islands at large, we’re happy to report that wine may do all of the following:

1. Feed your headWine could preserve your

memory. When researchers in United States gave memory quiz-zes to people in their 70s, those who drank one drink or more ev-ery day scored much better than those who drank less or not at all. Wine helps prevent clots and re-duce blood vessel infl ammation, both of which have been linked to cognitive decline and heart disease, explains Tedd Goldfi n-ger, DO, of the University of Ari-

zona School of Medicine. Wine also seems to raise HDL, the so-called good cholesterol, which helps unclog your arteries.

2. Keep the scale in your cor-ner

Studies fi nd that people who drink wine daily have lower body mass than those who indulge oc-casionally; moderate wine drink-ers have narrower waists and less abdominal fat than people who drink liquor. Wine may en-courage your body to burn extra calories for as long as 90 minutes after you down a glass.

3. Boost your body’s defenc-es

In one British study, those who drank roughly a glass of wine a day reduced by 11% their risk of infection by Helicobacter pylori bacteria, a major cause of gastri-tis, ulcers, and stomach cancers. As little as half a glass may also guard against food poisoning caused by germs like salmonella

when people are exposed to con-taminated food, according to a Spanish study.

4. Guard against ovarian woes

When Australian researchers recently compared women with ovarian cancer to cancer-free women, they found that roughly one glass of wine a day seemed to reduce the risk of the disease by as much as 50 percent. Earlier research at the University of Ha-waii produced similar fi ndings. Experts suspect this may be due to antioxidants or phytoestrogens, which have high anticancer prop-erties and are prevalent in wine. And in a recent University of Michigan study, a red wine com-pound helped kill ovarian cancer cells in a test tube.

5. Build better bonesOn average, those who drink

moderately seem to have higher bone mass than abstainers. Wine

appears to boost oestrogen levels; the hormone seems to slow the body’s destruction of old bone more than it slows the production of new bone.

6. Prevent blood-sugar trou-ble

Premenopausal women who drink one or two glasses of wine a day are 40 percent less likely than women who don’t drink to develop type 2 diabetes, accord-ing to a 10-year study by Harvard Medical School.

We hope the six reasons above are helpful in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. While these reasons have been scientifi cally researched, do consult your dieti-cian or physician for health re-lated matters.

Safety comes fi rst at Motibhai Group

Safety at a workplace is ev-eryone’s responsibility. The Mo-tibhai Group realizes that great-est asset of any organization is its people.

The Group strives to continu-ously make its workplace a safer place. Hazards are always pres-ent in any workplace.

Our goal is to make our work-place the safest place to work and we work towards achieving zero accidents. The goal is to always ensure our workers are aware of the hazards and its consequences and to minimize its consequences through training and error man-agement. OHS is not only vital at a workplace due to compliance to the law but safe working environ-ment is a linchpin in promoting wellness of workers and to the productivity of business.

We do realize that apart from the basic instinctive regard for our health and safety and that of others, there are many reason for making OHS a priority in our workplace.

For the past years we have been working with NFA & Na-tional Training and Productivity Centre in providing training pro-grams and capacity building op-portunities to our OHS Commit-tee so that new ideas, concepts, systems, approaches and best practices could be learnt and im-plemented at our workplace. We always believe that proactive ap-proach needs to be taken so that accidents can be controlled and prevented.

Our system is built on Japa-nese philosophy “Kaizen” which means continuous improvement. What we did very well yesterday, we strive to do better today. Mak-ing our workforce more aware of OHS and to appreciate that safety is everyone’s responsibility. This is being carried out through train-

ing, safety induction and fi re drill exercises at our various locations on regular basis.

Our main aim is to cultivate a safe and healthy work environ-ment for everyone. We can’t cor-

rect a wrong with another wrong. Changing mindsets and having that mind to learn will change ev-erything.

Remember “an ounce of pre-vention is worth a pound of cure”.
