QUICK FACTS

Shah Alam

Taking a leaf from an old Buddhist quotes

that says “If we are facing in the right direc-

tion, all we have to do is keep on walking. “

Nevertheless, when we first got together to

form some kind of resident committee, we

were not so sure if we are facing the right

direction but our notion told us to keep on

walking. After two years of walking, we real-

ize that we are on the right track. As a testa-

ment to this, our Resident Association was

formed in May this year, subsequently we

held our first EGM ( Extraordinary General

Meeting) , accelerated our presence on Social

Network namely facebook ,launched our own

Newsletter and successfully carried several

key events and activities e.g the recycling

campaign.

Although, we have fared well in the last two

years but we understand that the destination

is still some distance away and the obstacles

are abundant. All this while, we have man-

aged to do what we have done with less than

20 volunteers. Now imagine if we can achieve

all this with less than 20 volunteers what can

we achieve together with hundreds of volun-

teers. In view of this, we strongly urge resi-

dents and owners to come forward and help

us in building a better and safer community.

We have always held the view that IEORA is

the platform to unite the residents and the

owner‟s vis-à-vis to build a better community

and neighborhood. Nevertheless, despite all

of these good efforts, there are still some mi-

norities that have failed to understand the

concept of living in a community. Despite our

repeated communications and warnings,

these handful of owners and residents have

undermined the essence of community living

by not paying their maintenance fees. We

strongly urge them to have a change of heart

and be a part of community by paying their

maintenance fees.

Last but not least, we would like to wish all of

our Muslim readers “Selamat Hari Raya

Aidilfithri. Maaf Zahir dan Batin”

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Some of the bins around the play-

ground have been overflowing

with litters for weeks now. It

seems MBSA has not cleared them

for ages now. What can we do to

get MBSA to get the litters?

Some part of the playgrounds

are over grown by weeds and

mimosa plants. If left uncheck

this would turn out to be a real

eyesore, unless we do some-

thing about it. The monsoon drains

around Indah Elite are

clogged due to rubbish

dumping. These has been

mosquito breeding

ground in our commu-

nity. Now to make things

worse it has attracted

rats and even snakes. We

recently lost two dogs

due to snake bites. What

shall we do about it?

Remember those good old days

when you have your CDs, DVDs,

VHS Tapes scattered all over the

floor and to add to all those mess

you have your cables dangling all

over the place. Well with the ad-

vancement in the field of digital

and wireless technology you can at

least clear the mess by going media

and cable free.

You might have had your first taste of digital

technology from Astro Byond and Unifi

HyppTV. As a matter of fact, it doesn‟t take

much to build your own digital and wireless

media system nowadays. For a start, you

would need a decent bandwidth, Unifi would

do the trick. Next, you would need to get some

form of Network Acess Storage (NAS) , luckily

for us there are a handful of them in the mar-

ket today. As for me, I went out and bought a

Buffalo NAS since it is the cheapest but you

can literally choose anything from Apple to

WD. The NAS need to be configured and

physically hooked to one of the UNIFI ports.

Once you are done with your NAS and got it all

up and running, all you need next is some con-

tents. These contents can either be downloaded

from the internet or ripped from your favorite

DVDs.

Once you are done with the contents. The last

piece of the puzzle is the player. Ideally, you can

go out and buy yourself a BD player but never-

theless, feel free to grab any device that could

play MKV, AVI, WMV, RMVB, MPEG file for-

mats. Hook the player to one of your network

port and you are now ready to sit back and enjoy

all your favorite movies and music digitally and

cable free. The best part is that it doesn‟t cost

you an arm and a leg plus with DLNA (Digital

Living Network Alliance) technology you can be

rest assured that you can access your contents at

anywhere and anytime.

Interval training is any physical training

that involves burst of high intensity work

or exercise. The high intensity work or

exercise is alternated with periods of

recovery (which may involve complete

rest and/or lower intensity activity).

Example:-

Tay was jogging at the pace of 3km per

hour for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes he

increases his pace to 10 km per hour and

does it for a duration of 15 minutes. After

performance of 15 minutes of 10 km per

hour pace, he then slows down to 3 km

per hour jogging pace. He repeats the

intervals according to his goal.

In another term, interval training is a

cardiovascular workout that involves

brief bouts at near maximum exertion

interspersed with periods of lower inten-

sity activity.

Benefits of Interval Training

1. It boosts metabolism rate.

2. It burns off extra fat.

It is the quickest and the best way to

burn fat.

By Shawn Chan([email protected])

Interval Training

Principle behind Interval Training

It is not the amount of calories burned

during the workout but the amount of

calories burned after the workout.

Exercises or activities that can in-

corporate interval training

1. Jogging or running

2. Cycling

3. Aerobics exercise

4. Rope jumping

5. Swimming

Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

Part 1

Community Living

The meaning of “ Am I my

brother’s keeper?” is having the

responsibility to watch out for and

care for one another. It is relevant in

today‟s social settings. Social crimes is

on the rise. Security and safety of indi-

vidual well being has been compro-

mised.Trust on the ability of local en-

forcement to protect and to care for our

safety and security have diminished.

Hence it is very important that all of us

living in a gated community to adopt and

practice the above philosophy. Such phi-

losophy would ensure the following posi-

tive outcomes.

It would ensure that all of us will

always think of others first before

doing anything in this

gated community.

Scenario A

Residents would inform their respective

guest not to double park their cars at

areas that would obstruct or intrude the

neighbour‟s space. As neighbours, all of

us must be sensitive towards each other.

Courtesy is very important. A smiling

face does not mean consent in most

cases. People are just being polite and do

not want to be rude. However if courtesy

is taken for granted, it could build up to

resentment and eventually disputes.

Hence it is paramount that simple cour-

tesy such as informing or asking for con-

sent from our neighbour is being prac-

tised to ensure that harmony and peace

within the community are maintained.

It would ensure that the commu-

nity intervene into matters that are

crucial to one’s well being

or rectifying a wrong being done.

Scenario B

A resident seeing a domestic violence or

child abuse happening in a neighbours

house should intervene and take neces-

sary steps such as reporting to respective

authorities. Minding one‟s own business

in this scenario (which is typical of to-

day‟s society that we live in) would cause

further harm and injustice to the victims

in the stated scenario.

However this philosphy does not mean

being “Keh Poh Chi” or busy-body to our

neighbours. Such behavior would result

in conflicts , resentments and arguments

(maybe possible boxing contest). We

must be pragmatic in adopting the above

philosophy. We ought to intervene into

matters that would ensure harmony and

peace for the community as a whole.

I recently undertook a journey in an experiential

training program, upon receiving a certificate

upon completion - At the bottom a note “The real

voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new places

but in seeing with new eyes". If this is indeed

true, the possibilities for discovery are endless.

By shifting my point of view, I should be able to

see the same thing in a completely different per-

spective. A psychologist researching the impact

of „finite time‟ – the notion that you will certainly

die on a given day and that you have a finite

number of days left on planet Earth. Another

interesting point of view suggested was to pre-

sent one‟s life reshuffled and see what you truly

have to say about your life when you look at it

that way! Glance through the passage below and

see what an average Malaysian does.

In the afterlife you relive all your experiences,

but this time with the events reshuffled into a

new order: all the moments that share a quality

are grouped together. You spend two months

driving in your neighborhood, seven months of

intimacy. You sleep for thirty years without

opening your eyes. For five months straight you

flip through magazines. You take all your pain at

once, all twenty-seven intense hours of it. Bones

break, cars crash, skin is cut, babies are born.

Once you make it through, it‟s agony-free for the

rest of your afterlife. But that doesn‟t mean it‟s

always pleasant. You spend six days clipping

your nails. Fifteen months looking for lost items.

Eighteen months waiting in line. Two years of

boredom: staring out a express bus window,

Your eyes hurt, and you itch, because you can‟t

take a shower until it‟s your time to take your

marathon two-hundred-day shower. Two weeks

wondering what happens when you die. One

minute realizing your body is falling. Seventy-

seven hours of confusion. One hour realizing

you‟ve forgotten someone‟s name whom you

met. Three weeks realizing you are wrong. Two

days lying. Six weeks waiting for a green light.

Fourteen minutes experiencing pure joy. Three

months doing laundry. Fifteen hours writing

your signature. Sixty-seven days of heartbreak.

Five weeks driving lost. Fifty-one days deciding

what to wear. Nine days pretending you know

what is being talked about. Two weeks counting

money. Eighteen days staring into the refrigera-

tor. Thirty-four days longing. Six months watch-

ing commercials. Four weeks sitting in thought,

wondering if there is something better you could

be doing with your time. Three years swallowing

food.

Then write down what your afterlife will be if you

were to continue to live the life you are currently

living. See if you can live with it. I discovered

after I did some math and figured that if I carried

on doing what I was doing, in the next 30 years I

would spend 10 years sleeping, 1 year playing

some sport or exercise, 12 years working, 3 years

riding to work and 4 years with my family. That

changed the way I saw my life, and had a pro-

found impact on some decisions I made. Try this

exercise, it is very powerful.

The question is - If you saw your afterlife differently, would you live your life as you are now?

Observation tells us that Indah Elite consists of mostly young families. Therefore, this page is solely dedicated to you, young parents!

Short description about myself – am a stay-at-home mom since the birth of my 2nd child, mother of four (2 boys and 2 girls), Grandmother of 3 (2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter). Believes parents should raise their own children. Work hard to cook meals for my family that are healthy, varied and, of course, budget-friendly. Enjoys craft, gardening, music, decorating and writing. Supporter in the concept of recycling, reusing and repairing. Believes that cleanliness is godliness! To start with, here is something am sure all par-ent is familiar with: “I just don‟t know what to do with our kids!” “Every day is another hassle. From morning to night something is always going wrong. We have

tried everything, but nothing seems to work!” “Rising early” – make breakfast, get the children ready for school, laundry, marketing, clean-ing….and the list goes on… “Stay up late” – unfinished chores, make sure children do homework, plan for next day‟s menu, errands, etc… “Toiling” – chauffeuring children to and fro from tuition and other activities, grocery shopping, seeing to the needs of the family, etc…. At the end of the day, when we finally put our heads on the pillow, do we sleep – no….our minds will run again!! Have you been there? Yes, many parents, especially MOTHERS can agree with me! Many of us who have been there can sympathize with this phenomena. To be honest, there are no short cuts and as parents we have to go through this „season‟ of life. Yes, the work of raising a child from the crib, we give absolutely no formal training. There is no such thing as “instant parents” when today we have so many “instant” stuff like instant noodles, instant coffee, etc. BUT, the good news is parenting reaps GREAT JOY AND GREAT REWARDS!! It gives you GREAT OPPORTUNITY to shape your children‟s lives for time and for eternity. I recalled the time when my parents and friends had advised me not to stop work after having such good education, training, etc. When I finally made the decision to be full time homemaker, I had not looked back. Found satisfaction and fulfillment in being the parent my children needed which I would not have gotten if I had continued working. My

three children were all graduates of our local universities here – two from UM and one from UKM and my oldest child graduated from KDU – she was the Valedictorian for her class. We are in this era where you can obtain abun-dance of information about anything and every-thing – so no one can say „ I don‟t know how‟. Parents just stay focused and do not be distracted with where the current trend is head-ing. Our parents could do it without all these technologies and modernization, and we are living examples of their good teaching and values imparted to us. This Parenting page is open to all – you can ei-ther:

1) share your thoughts on this sub-ject (we need articles for this page) 2) or ask questions regarding par-enting ( we are no experts, but will try to answer) 3) or send us anything relating to Parenting , maybe pictures, quota-tions, jokes, etc

Please send all matters on parenting to Mrs. Loh, email address: [email protected]

Going Green IEORA Recycling Campaign

By Eu Jin Ang and Sashi Kumar Sivam ([email protected])

We launched our own recycling campaign on the 20th of August 2011. After weeks of preparation, the event turned out exactly how we wanted it to be, a success. We owe this largely to the participation of our resi-dence and the commitment shown by all our sub-committee members. Unless you have somehow missed the banners, you would know that this is monthly, intended to be held during the third Saturday of every month. In case if you have missed it the next „Recycling Campaign‟ is to be held on 17 September 2011 from 9 to 11 a.m at Indah Elite‟s Basketball Court. So block it in your calendar or key it in yoursmart phone,

The overall objective of the campaign is to create awareness among all IEROA mem-bers on the benefits of REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE towards a better, sustainable and healthier community living environ-ment. Plus, it also helps to diversify our collection as the Proceeds received from the recycling campaign will be channeled to the IEROA account and will be used for IEROA sanctioned activities.

Participation is simple and we don‟t really have many rules for you to follow. Here are two simple guidelines:

segregate or sort the recyclable items

according to respective categories

Containers that contain food / oil / beverage should be rinsed and washed thoroughly to avoid attracting house-hold insects & pests;

Once you have done so , bring across your recyclable items to our basketball court on the stipulated date. The sub-committee would then take it over from you and if needed then would re-sort and re-categorize the items accordingly . As a mat-ter fact , you could even communicate with them on that day to get answers to some of your questions.

The vendors are selective and they would-n‟t usually accept everything and anything. The following are a list of items that are deemed to be acceptable:

Meanwhile, these items are not acceptable:

We would appreciate if you could follow these simple guidelines. Last but not least, see you all in the next recycling campaign and lets do our very least in saving Mother Earth.
