Illinois in Big Ten OpenersIllinois is 57-40 all-time in Big Ten openinggames and has won its last three conferenceopeners … This is the first time since the1998-99 season that the Illini have openedBig Ten play on the road. Illinois is 19-24all-time when opening conference play onthe road … This is the third season in a rowand the 16th time all-time that Illinois andMinnesota have opened the Big Ten seasonagainst each other, with the Illini owning a8-7 advantage over the Gophers in confer-ence openers.

Last Time Out -- Illinois 88, Oakland 53Illinois wrapped up the nonconference por-tion of its schedule with a convincing 88-53victory over visiting Oakland on Saturdaynight. The Illini had all five starters score indouble figures, led by 22 points from BrianCook and a career-high tying 20 points fromSean Harrington. The Illini shot a blistering59.7 percent from the field and dished out aseason-high 25 assists, with freshmen DeronWilliams (six) and Dee Brown (five) com-bining for 11. Brown scored 12 of his 14points in the second half, while Williamsadded 11 points and freshman Ja m e sAugustine 10.

Self DefenseAfter 11 games this season, Illinois oppo-nents are shooting just 36.7 percent fromthe field, including just 31 percent from 3-point range.

Against Coppin State on Dec. 30,Illinois held the Eagles to just 12 field goals,

the fewest made shots in the 40-year historyof the Assembly Hall, and to just 29 percentshooting from the field, the second Illiniopponent this season to shoot under 30 per-cent.

Illinois has now held its last five oppo-nents to under 40 percent shooting from thefield for the game, and has a total of sevensuch defensive efforts this season. CoppinState’s 37 points were the fewest allowed bythe Illini since defeating Northwestern 63-30 on Feb. 19, 2000.

Illinois ranks second in the league inscoring defense, allowing opponents an aver-age of just 57.9 points, and first in field-goalpercentage defense at .367. The Illini alsorank fourth in the Big Ten in reboundingmargin (+5.3) and fourth in steals per game(7.55).

Illini Injury UpdateSophomores Luther Head and Roger Powellsat out Illinois’ games vs. Coppin State andOakland last week. Head is suffering from apelvic/groin injury, while Powell sprained hisright big toe in the game at Memphis Dec.28. Both players are expected to be availablefor Tuesday’s Big Ten opener at Minnesota.

Un-Self-ish PlayThe Fighting Illini have begun the 2002-03season with unselfish play. Illinois leads theBig Ten in assists (19.64 per game), high-lighted by a season-high 25 assists vs.Oakland, 24 vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and 23against both Western Illinois and NorthCarolina. In the win over Coppin State, theIllini were credited with 21 assists on 22

made baskets, an amazing 96 percent ofshots made. Illinois has tallied 20 or moreassists in six games and has recorded assistson over 66 percent of its baskets (216 assistson 327 FG) on the season. Guards DeeBrown and De ro n Williams are tied forfourth in the Big Ten in assists with both

Bill Self is in his third season at thehelm of the Illini program following threeyears at Tulsa where he earned NationalCoach of the Year honors from the John &Nellie Wooden Foundation and T h eSporting News in 2000.

At Illinois, he became the second coachin Big Ten history, and the first since1912-14, to win Big Ten titles in his firsttwo years in the league. He is the firstcoach in Illinois history to reach 50 winsin his first two seasons. Self has led teamsto at least the NCAA Sweet Sixteen each ofthe last three seasons, including two tripsto the Final Eight.

After leading Tulsa to a 32-5 record andRegional Final appearance in 2000, Selfbecame just the second coach to lead twodifferent schools to Final Eight appear-ances in consecutive seasons when he tookthe Illini to the Regional Final in 2001.Prior to his stop at Tulsa, Self spent fouryears at Oral Roberts where he built a pro-gram from 6-21 his first season to 21-7 inhis fourth year.

A 1985 graduate of Oklahoma State,Self has worked under Larry Brown atKansas and Leonard Hamilton and EddieSutton at Oklahoma State.

In his first season at Illinois, Self led theIllini to 27 victories, the second-most inschool history and became just the fourthBig Ten coach since 1950 to defeat everyconference school in his first season. Healso became just the ninth coach in BigTen history to win a Big Ten title in hisfirst season.

Brown Becomes First Illini Freshman toEarn Big Ten Player of the Week honors.Dee Brown became the first freshman inIllinois history to earn Big Ten Player of theWeek honors, when he was honored onDec. 23 after pouring in a game-high 21points in the Illini's victory over No. 11Missouri.

The first-year point guard connected ona trio of 3-pointers, recorded a game-highs e ven assists and added five re b o u n d s ,including four on the offensive glass, in thewin. Brown broke the 20-point barrier forthe second time on the season againstMissouri, while his seven assists against theTigers also ranked as the second-best outputof his career.

Brown leads the Illini and ranks fourthin the Big Ten with 4.64 assists per gamewhile his 14.1 points per contest rates sec-

ond on the team and 15th in the league.Among the top freshmen in the League, heranks among the top three in assists (first),points (third) and steals (first) per game.Brown is the second Illini to earn LeaguePlayer of the Week accolades this season, asteammate Brian Cook was honored on Dec.9.

Hot StartIllinois’ eight straight wins to open the2002-03 season tied the 10th-best start inthe 98-year history of Fighting Illini basket-ball and was the Illini’s best start sincebeginning the 1995-96 season 9-0.

Cook’s streak of consecutive made freethrows came to an end against Oakland onSaturday at 32, tying Rob Judson for secondplace in school history for consecutive freethrows. Take away his 5-of-10 free throwshooting performance against EasternIllinois this season, and Cook is 94-of-99from the free throw line since Jan. 1, 2002.

Dee - Lightful, Dee-Pendable ... No Dee-Bate, Dee Can PlayWho is the best freshman point guard in col-lege basketball? While it’s still too early inthe season to begin that debate, it’s hard tofind a rookie guard that has made more of animpact than Illinois’ Dee Brown. Brown hasstarted every game and leads the Illini inminutes played (33.5 avg.). He has scored indouble figures in eight of 11 games and issecond on the team in scoring, averaging14.1 points. Brown exploded for a career-high 25 points against Eastern Illinois onDec. 10, hitting 10-of-14 shots, including acareer-high five 3-pointers.

In two December performances in frontof national television audiences, Brown firsthad a game-high 21 points with seven assistsand five rebounds in Illinois’ victory overNo. 11 Missouri to earn Big Ten Player ofthe Week honors on Dec. 21. He then fol-lowed with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, with three assists and three boardswith no turnovers in 37 minutes againstMemphis.

Brown ranks fourth in the Big Ten inassists with 4.6 per game and ranks fourth inthe league with an assist/turnover ratio of1.96. He also ranks 15th in the Big Ten in

scoring at 14.1 points per game. One of thequickest guards in America, Brown’s 1.6steals per game ranks seventh in the Big Ten.

Twice as Nice - Williams Joins Brown inAll-Freshman BackcourtDeron Williams and Dee Brown make upperhaps the best freshmen backcourt in thenation. The two rank second and fourth,respectively, in the Big Ten in assist-to-turnover-ratio and have the Illini leading theBig Ten in team assists and assist-to-turnoverratio. Brown leads the team in minutes at33.5 per game, but Williams is third at 25.7minutes. Williams is averaging 7.7 points, istied with Brown for the team lead in assists

Augie HotAnother member of the heralded Illini fresh-man class to shine has been newcomer JamesAugustine. He has bolstered the UI front-court, averaging 6.0 points and shootingover 62 percent from the field. He hasscored in double figures three times, with aseason-high 12 points vs. Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

Augustine is also second on the teambehind Brian Cook in rebounding, averag-ing 5.7 boards. He has been Illinois’ top-rebounder in three games, highlighted byback-to-back nine rebound performances vs.Lehigh and Ark.-Pine Bluff. Augustine ranks16th in the Big Ten in rebounding at 5.7 pergame and seventh in blocked shots at 1.5 pergame.

Cook named Co-Big Ten Player of theWeek following wins over UNC &ArkansasBrian Cook was named Big Ten Co-Playerof the Week on Dec. 9 after leading the Illinito victories over No rth Carolina andA rkansas. He shared the award withIndiana’s Tom Coverdale.

Cook scored a game-high 22 points inIllinois’ 92-65 victory over No. 12 NorthCarolina. He connected on 8-of-12 shotsfrom the field, grabbed a game-high eightrebounds and tied his career high with fiveassists. Cook was also the leading scorer inIllinois’ 62-58 win over Arkansas, scoring 18points in 39 minutes of action, the mostplaying time logged by an Illini player thisseason. Cook made 7-of-14 field goals and

added four rebounds and four assists vs. theRazorbacks. On the week, Cook averaged 20points, six rebounds, and 4.5 assists pergame on combined 58 percent shooting.

High-Scoring IlliniIllinois has opened the 2002-03 season byaveraging 80.5 points, outscoring its oppo-nents by an average of 22.5 points per game.Illinois is shooting 50.8 percent from thefield and has shot better than 50 percent inseven of 11 games this season.

Illinois leads the Big Ten in scoring mar-gin (+22.5), field goal percentage (.508) andscoring average (80.5), while ranking thirdin 3-point field goal percentage (.392).Illinois’ top seven scorers are all shooting 46percent or better from the field.

Spears Sidelined With Knee InjuryFreshman center Aaron Spears suffered a

torn lateral meniscus in his left knee duringpractice on Dec. 16 and had arthroscopicsurgery on Dec. 27. He is expected to miss4-6 weeks of action. He averaged 3.2 pointsand 1.5 rebounds in six games before he wasinjured.

Freshmen Bask In Season OpenerFor the first time in school history, Illinoisopened the season with three freshmen inthe starting lineup when James Augustine,Dee Brown and Deron Williams were on thefloor for the opening tip vs. Lehigh on Nov.24. Two sophomores, Roger Powell andNick Smith, rounded out the starting lineup

as the youngest in school history. Prior tothe opener, the five starters had combinedfor a total of four starts (all by Nick Smith).

The previous time Illinois started threefreshmen in any game was Feb. 20, 1991when Rennie Clemons, Scott Pierce, andTom Michael started vs. Ohio State.

Assembly Hall, Champaign, Ill.Sophomore Roger Powell had 15 points and nine

rebounds to lead five underclassmen in double figuresfor Illinois in a 90-56 win over Lehigh.

Illinois (1-0) started three freshman and two sopho-mores in its first regular season game because of injuriesand suspensions to two of its players, and the inexperi-ence showed early on.

But after a few rocky minutes, the Illini's youngsterseventually settled down and easily pulled away fromLehigh (1-1).

Illinois trailed 15-12 before going on an 18-3 runthat was capped by a crowd-pleasing dunk by freshmanAaron Spears. The 6-9 center caught a pass four feetfrom the basket, spun around a defender and slammedthe ball with one hand for his first career points atIllinois.

After a basket by Lehigh, Illinois outscored theMountain Hawks 17-4 behind three 3-pointers from 6-8 Kyle Wilson and took a 47-24 halftime lead.

Illinois shot 56 percent for the game, including 46percent from 3-point range, and held Lehigh to 37 per-cent shooting.

Cook and reserve guard Jerrance Howard sat outwhile serving two-game suspensions for playing in anon-sanctioned summer tournament. Wilson scored 14points and made 3-of-5 3-pointers. Illinois guards DeeBrown and Deron Williams, both freshmen, combinedfor 26 points and had four assists apiece.

Roger Powell scored 17 points and had seve nrebounds to lead Illinois to a 96-43 rout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Powell, who led four Illini in double figures, had 12points in the second half and has paced the Illini (2-0)in scoring in both of their games.

Freshmen Dee Brown added 14 points and fourrebounds, James Augustine had 12 points, ninerebounds and four assists and Kyle Wilson scored 11 forIllinois.

Illinois, which led 40-19 at the half, went on 16-3and 16-4 runs after the break, effectively running itsoffense and stifling any chance for the Golden Lions.

Illinois dominated the boards by a 50-20 margin,pulling down 24 offensive rebounds.

The Illini pushed a slim 10-7 lead nearly halfwaythrough the first half to 31-13 with five minutes to go,behind two 3-pointers by Sean Harrington, who fin-ished with nine points, and consecutive Aaron Spearslayups. Spears finished with eight points.

The Illini's Brian Cook, the team's leading returningscorer and rebounder, and Jerrance Howard sat out thefinal game of a two-game suspensions for playing in anon-sanctioned summer tournament.

The Illini were also without sophomore LutherHead, who has not played this season because of a groininjury.

Brian Cook returned from a two-game suspensionand scored 17 points Sunday in leading Illinois to a 85-56 win over Western Illinois.

Cook and guard Jerrance Howard missed the firsttwo regular-season games for inadvertently participat-ing in a non-sanctioned tournament this past summer,an NCAA violation. Howard was scoreless in his return.

Roger Powell added 15 points and seven reboundsand Luther Head scored 11 in his first appearance of theseason after battling a groin injury. Deron Williamschipped in 10 for the Illini (3-0).

Illinois led 42-24 at halftime as Cook scored 13 first-half points.

Western's Andre Charles scored six points during a13-4 run in the second half that cut the Illini lead to 54-46 with just over nine minutes remaining.

The Leathernecks (2-3) got no closer however, asDee Brown's steal and layup gave Illinois a 10-pointlead and the Illini pulled away from there. Se a nHarrington hit two 3-pointers that extended the Illinoisadvantage to 16 and James Augustine scored with 2:30left to give them a 24-point cushion.

Illinois’ bench combined to scored 32 points in mak-ing 14 of 15 field-goal attempts. Brown handed out 10assists for the Illini.

North Carolina with its first real road test of the sea-son. It was one they didn't pass as No. 25 Illinois ranaway in the final eight minutes and routed the No. 12Tar Heels 92-65.

A tight seven-point game (64-57) turned lopsidedwhen Illinois finished on a 28-8 run over the final7:42, sending Carolina to its first loss of the season.

In a game billed as a matchup of talented freshmen- North Carolina started three and Illinois two - Illiniseniors Brian Cook and Sean Harrington made thedifference.

Cook scored 22 points, grabbed eight reboundsand had five assists, while Harrington had a career-high 20 points, making 6-of-8 3-pointers, and cameup with five steals.

Freshman Sean May led North Carolina with 21points, Jawad Williams had 15 and freshman RashadMcCants added 13.

Illinois got a splendid game from first-year pointguard Dee Brown, who scored 12 points and playedstellar defense against North Carolina's RaymondFelton.

Brian Cook hit the first free throw of a 1-and-1situation with 8.4 seconds remaining, giving Illinois a60-58 lead. When Cook, an 87-percent free throwshooter, missed his second, Arkansas freshmanJonathan Modica passed the rebound out to Ferguson.

Ferguson turned up court, took two dribbles andattempted a half-court pass to Dionisio Gomez. Theball sailed out of bounds and Illinois' freshman pointguard Dee Brown sank two free throws with 1.9 sec-onds left to seal the game.

When the Razorbacks had four chances to take alead in the final minutes, they had no one with Cook'sexperience to step forward. So the Fighting Illini (5-0)stayed perfect this season while Arkansas (1-4) lost itsfourth straight.

Arkansas burned its final time-out with 15:34remaining and was unable to set up a play in the final2:25 when it had three chances to take the lead whiletrailing 59-58.

Illinois led 28-24 at the half and opened the sec-ond half with a 10-0 run as Augustine and Brown hadfour points apiece.

Freshman Dee Brown scored 25 points - including 12of 19 as Illinois took control early in the second half -and Brian Cook added 21 as the 15th-ranked Illinibeat Eastern Illinois 80-68.

The Illini (6-0) led by four points early in thesecond half, when they took advantage of six turnoversby Eastern Illinois (3-5) to extend their lead to 15.Brown had two 3-pointers during the surge, and was5-of-8 from beyond the arc and 10-of-14 overall.

Henry Domercant, the nation's eighth-leadingscorer at 25 points per game, had 30 for the Panthers.Domercant scored 14 points in the first 20 minutes,but went scoreless during a 10-minute stretch thatincluded eight straight misses from the field.

Illinois led 38-32 at halftime behind Cook's 14points and Roger Powell's 12. Powell finished with 16.

The Illini pushed the lead to 15 points with fourminutes left in the first half with a 16-4 run. Cookhad five points and Brown four in that stretch.

But the Panthers made nine free throws over thelast four minutes of the first half to close to within sixpoints.

Luther Head replaced Deron Williams in thestarting lineup for Illinois. Williams sprained his anklein practice Sunday, and was limited to just 15 minutesafter averaging 26 in the first five games.

Brian Cook had 25 points and 11 rebounds as No.15 Illinois held a road-weary Temple to its worstshooting game of the season in a 70-54 win.

Illinois led 50-43 when Deron Williams and SeanHarrington made back-to-back 3-pointers to key a 20-9 run.

Temple played its second straight game withoutcoach John Chaney, who was at home while he recov-ers from pneumonia. Temple’s trademark zone defensefrustrated the Illini's shooters all game. Illinois shot aseason-low 43 percent from the field. The Owls, play-ing in a school-record sixth straight road game, shotjust 29 percent and made 6-of-28 3-point attempts.

David Hawkins led Temple with 22 points, andsenior Alex Wesby added 15.

Illinois built a 14-point lead in the first half behindnear-perfect shooting from the free-throw line andpoor outside shooting by Temple. The Illini made 13of 14 free throws before the break.

After making just one field goal in the first fourminutes, Illinois went on a 19-3 run and later took a28-14 lead when Harrington fired a long pass to fresh-man James Augustine for a dunk and the Illini'sbiggest edge of the half. Hawkins and Wesby com-bined to score 11 points during a 13-2 run for theOwls to get them within three at halftime. It was theclosest Temple would get.

Illinois opened up the second half with twostraight baskets, the second coming on a steal andlayup by Williams. Williams, one of three freshmenwho started for Illinois, finished with eight points andseven assists.

Illinois has won the last three games in the neu-tral-site series, which again played to a sellout crowd of22,153 at Savvis Center. It was the first time bothteams were unbeaten since 1989.

Brown and Ricky Clemons played to a virtualstandstill in a battle of point guards. Clemons had 16points and three assists and hit four 3-pointers, whileBrown made quick recovery from a shoulder injuryearly in the second half, missing only about 21/2 min-utes.

But Illinois excelled inside against an experiencedMissouri front line, outrebounding the Tigers 42-32.Brian Cook barely missed his second straight double-double with 17 points, hitting all 10 free throws, andnine rebounds. Five others contributed four or morerebounds apiece.

Illinois shot 45 percent overall, Missouri a season-worst 37.7 percent. Illinois also helped itself at theline, going 21-for-25.

Illinois led 39-32 at halftime, and stretched thelead to 59-41 with a 9-0 run early in the second half.

Missouri closed to 11 points with seven straightpoints, but couldn't get any closer than nine the restof the way.

Seventh-ranked Illinois got an unpleasant surprisein the second half.

"We lost the game in the first five minutes of thesecond half," Illinois coach Bill Self said after theFighting Illini fell 77-74 to Memphis.

After going to the dressing room trailing 37-31,Memphis returned to hit three straight 3-pointers andgo up 40-37. At the mid-point, Memphis led by eightpoints, 58-50.

The Tigers (6-2) were up by eight points threetimes in the second half, but Illinois closed in the finalminutes.

Illinois (8-1) had a chance to tie it, but DeeBrown's 3-point attempt fell short with 2 seconds left.Brown, the team's freshman standout, had 19 pointsfor the game.

Chris Massie, in his first game of the season,scored 13 points and had 10 of his 12 rebounds forMemphis in the second period. He was academicallyineligible for the first seven games.

Though Illinois failed to regain the lead after thefirst half, Brian Cook tied it at 71 with a 3-pointerfrom the top of the key with 1:35 left to play.

But then Memphis came back with five unan-swered points.

Cook led all players with 21 points. He hit alleight of his free throws and led Illinois with ninerebounds.

Both teams started slow, with Memphis hitting33.3 percent from the field in the first half, andIllinois shooting 35.5 percent. Memphis finished at39.7 percent and Illinois at 39 percent.

Larry Tucker led the Eagles with 15 points whileDeke Thompson added eight points and seven boards.

The Illini shot 56 percent from 3-point range,draining 10-of-18 from behind the arc, including oneby 7-foot-2 center Nick Smith. Harrington’s six treystied his career high.

Coppin State frustrated Illinois early and went on a7-0 run in the second half that closed the deficit to sixpoints at 38-32. A basket and free throw from Cook, a3-pointer from Dee Brown and two free throws fromBlandon Ferguson pushed the lead to 14 with under10 minutes to go. The Illini finished the gameoutscoring the Eagles 25-5.

Coppin State did not score a field goal the final 12minutes of the game and finished the contest with just12 baskets, the fewest field goals by an opponent inAssembly Hall history.

The Illini led 31-19 at the half behind 13 pointsand five rebounds from Cook and two 3-pointers fromHarrington, who made his first start of the season.

The No. 11 Illini beat Oakland 88-53 in theirfinal tuneup before conference play begins. They shot60 percent from the field, dished out a season-high 25assists and held the nation's third-leading scorer, MikeHelms, to 16 points.

Big Ten leading scorer Brian Cook had 22 pointsand 11 rebounds and Sean Harrington tied a career-high with 20 points, including five 3-pointers.

Harrington went 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Heentered the game shooting 52 percent from beyondthe arc - second in the Big Ten - and has made 13 ofhis last 19 field-goal attempts.

The Illini (10-1) opened the second half with a14-2 run, including six points from Cook, to extendtheir lead from 12 to 24 with under 15 minutes toplay. Brown took over from there, scoring nine pointsin a three-minute span.

Helms entered the game averaging 26.5 points pergame but went 6-of-22 from the floor as Oakland (5-6) dropped its third straight. Oakland shot just 34percent from the field.

Harrington led the Illinois charge before the half,hitting four 3-pointers while Cook added eight pointsand eight rebounds. Williams pushed the first-halflead to seven with consecutive layups in a 20-secondspan. Then Harrington added two 3-pointers during a14-4 run that ended with a Williams dunk, extendingIllinois' lead to 34-19. The Illini led 38-26 at halftime.
