HAMPTON | With their constructionpaper “suitcases” and their very own“passports” clutched firmly inhand, first graders at CentreSchool enjoyed theirannual Cruising theContinents activity.

Cruising theContinents isdesigned to“involve and showthe children cus-toms [and] tradi-tions from aroundthe world during theholiday season,”according to first gradeteacher Kathie Street.

Throughout the month of Decem-ber, three times per week, students visit thedifferent classrooms, with each “destina-tion” representing a different countryaround the world.

This year’s travels brought the firstgraders to Japan, Italy, Africa, Australia,Panama, Ireland, Germany, Mexico andChina.

“Each of the teachers involved with thisactivity [provides] information about acountry, the customs from that country, and its geographical location,” explainedStreet.

At each stop, children had their pass-ports stamped and took part in a variety ofactivities that included art, music, gamesand other fun things to do while learningabout that particular country.

For example, visitors to Panama(Street’s classroom) began their “journey”by passing an inflatable globe to oneanother while singing a welcome song(“We’ve got the whole world in ourhands”). They discussed the country’s flag(inspired by America’s own Star SpangledBanner) and talked about the toucan, a birdnative to the country’s rain forests.

The students colored pictures of the flagand the colorfully-beaked bird, then madetoucan masks using a paper plate, con-struction paper, feathers and glue. Themasks, said Street, are used during cere-monial festivals in Panama.

Other activities included crafting paperlanterns in China and piñatas in Mexico, decorating candles in Ireland, makingChristmas trees in Germany and colorful

First graders weren’t theonly ones taking a trip around

were a littlemore word-orient-

wrote words and phrases enFrançais in their very ownFrench word books.

Cruising the Continents is aunique way for Centre Schoolstudents to learn about theworld around them, while pro-viding fun activities which leadup to school vacation and cele-brating the holidays with theirfamilies.
