Downturn fails to stem risein average shipping salaries
AVERAGE shipping salaries continueto rise despite the current downturninmost sectors of the industry, according to a survey compiled bySouthampton-based recruitmentagency Faststream.
Nevertheless, substantial numbersof seafarers and some shore staff haveseen substantial reductions in payover the last 12months.
Themixed picture emerges fromasurvey based on responses from4,000 shipping employeesworkingin allmain shipping centres, aswellas at sea.
In general, senioritywas found tobe a crucial variant, with those in thehigher positionsmore likely to haveenjoyed an inflation-plus settlement.
Themain conclusion is that 56%ofshore staff and 50%of seafarerrespondents reported a salary gain of5%ormore during the last year.
However, set against this, 10%ofshore-based professionals and 30%ofseafarers said that their salaries hadactually been cut in this period.Salarieswere static for 17%of shorestaff and 12%of seafarers.
In terms of average salaries ashore, chartering directors are at the top ofthe tree, averaging an annual basic of$227,140 and a bonus of 20%.
That is someway ahead of thesecond-ranking job title, withfleet/technicalmanagers pullingdown$123,518 and a bonus of 16%.
Faststreamhighlights thecloseness in remuneration betweenship operators, on $82,074, andshipbrokers, on $81,666.
“While gauging the averageshipbroker’s salary is of course verydifficult, as it takes in such awiderange of earnings andmarkets, thefact is that the role of the ship
operator has become increasinglyhighly regarded,” the report notes.
“Good ship operators canmake thedifference between commercialsuccess and failure and are in demandnot onlywithin shipping companies, but also commodity houses andbanks.”
Consultants can also earnwell ifthey are equally comfortable in aboiler suit and a business suit and can
explain engineering issues to a non-technical audience.
In geographical terms, the highestpaid positions are in theUS,where thepool of candidates for jobs such assuperintendent are limited and toughvisa requirementsmake it harder tobring in overseas talent. Asia-basedship operators and shipbrokers are20%better paid than their Europeancounterparts.
In general,Middle East positionspay theworstwithin each jobcategory. However, salaries for ex-patsare often tax free andhousing costsare provided by the employer. Localemployeeswill not as a rule enjoysuch terms and conditions.
While benefit packages offered byshipmanagement companies havecaught upwith those on offer fromshipowners, shipowners still have theedge in terms of perks such as paidlunch, gymmembership and optionalholiday credits.
Average salaries formastermariners tend to be highest for thoseworking onpassenger vessels, and aretypically at around $153,000. Next inthe league table aremasters onoffshore vessels ($128,247), followedby those serving on tankers ($115,613)anddry ships ($110,981).
But the goodnews is that over a 20-yearworking career at sea, an officercan expect to see his or her salarydouble in real terms.
Faststreamchief executiveMarkCharman said: “Even though theshipping industry is being buffeted bypoor vessel earnings, rising costs andevermore stringent regulations, salaries continue to rise.
“The sector suffers froma skillshortage and the pool of highlyqualified people continues to shrink. This is both the legacy of a lack oftraining in the 1980s during theprevious downturn and the oftenperceived low status of jobs in theshipping industry.”
A spokesman forNautilusInternational said that theAnglo-Dutch officers’ unionhad found thefindings interesting, and added thatofficers in skill shortage areas haveoften been able to commanddouble-digit pay hikes.
However, the tendency towardspay cuts did not appear to be aspronounced amongunionisedofficers covered by collectivebargaining agreements, he said.n
