Dear Fir st Avenue Famil ies,
We are quickly coming to the end of our 2015.16 school year. This has been another great year at Fir st Avenue Middle School. Your students are outstanding kids w ith
big hear ts and a lot of character. I have really enjoyed working w ith them. Many people have an idea of middle school; in fact many of us r emember our days in middle school and probably would not want to go back! Fir st Avenue is a di f ferent place. Al l of our students w i l l have the oppor tuni ty to tr y a var iety of di f ferent electives. They par ticipate in ever ything from Industr ial Technology, Graphic Design, Rock Band, Theater and Production, and even a Fi tness and Crossfi t class that r esembles the classes at your gym. In addition our students compete in math and science Olympiads and even compete in robotic challenges. Their science courses use programing, 3D pr inter s, and real electronic components. On top of al l that, our students have afternoon activi ties, a new athletic program w ith 10 di f ferent spor t teams, and our FA kids get to par take in a w ide r ange of interactive days l ike Greek Days, Medieval Days, and Ell is Island Activi ties. Fir st Avenue is not your average middle school!Al l this to say, your time and effor t dir ectly affects the success of our school and more so our students. We need family and community commitment to do our best work. Stay involved and suppor t Fir st Avenue. These are some of the best years in your chi ld?s academic exper ience. In 3 shor t years they grow from chi ldren that are unsure about ever ything into young adults that can run the mi le in less than 7 minutes or play the electr ic gui tar. These are great years!

Whi le I am ver y exci ted about the new posi tion and the work involved, I am sad about leaving FA. In addition, the school si te has a ter r i f ic oppor tuni ty to hir e a new leader and 4 teaching posi tions. Staff and parents w i l l have a chance to voice their thoughts on character istics our new pr incipal should embody. The posi tion has been f low n and paper screening and inter views w i l l engage soon. The new pr incipal of Fir st Avenue w i l l be r ecommended to the Board of Education on the evening of June 14. I want to thank al l of the parents, especial ly the ones that attend our evening events, their student?s spor ting events, informational sessions, PTSA meetings and Music Club meetings. Dear Fr iends,
I would l ike to take this oppor tuni ty to sincerely express my grati tude to my PTSA Executive Board and Committee Chair per sons for al l their countless hours of volunteer ism to PTSA. On behalf of the PTSA, I would l ike to voice our appreciation for al l the suppor t of the Fir st Avenue Middle Schools administr ator s, teachers, and staff for ever ything they do for PTSA and our chi ldren.
We accomplished a lot this past year. I t al l star ted w ith volunteer ing for Spar tan Day, Funder land, Book Fair s, School Dances, Teachers Appreciation Week, Staff Luncheons, Jog-a-thon, Garden Club, Red Ribbon Week, etc. Upcoming, we have the most impor tant event of the year , the 8th grade promotion par ty. PTSA also suppor ts past Fir st Avenue alumni at Ar cadia High School w ith col lege scholar ships.
PTSA also suppor ts and donates to local chi ldren organizations around Arcadia l ike the Arcadia Chi ld Health Counci l , Ar cadia Assistance League/Operation School Bell , Campership, and the CAN You Help Food Dr ive. PTSA also promotes posi tive legislation at the State
and Federal government level through our PTSA membership dues.
Through your generous suppor t of var ious fund raising events, PTSA was able to donate pedometer s, computer s, spin bikes, w ir eless microphones, and a DVD duplicator to the school. In addition to suppor ting the Associated Student Body by donating al l the funds r aised from Funder land to ASB, PTSA was also able to suppor t each and ever y teacher at Fir st Avenue w ith a Teacher?s Grant going towards equipment and supplies for their classrooms.
A LETTER FROM THE PTSA

Educat ion. Money. Fam i ly Engagem ent . These topics were the
prevai l ing themes at this year?s Cali fornia State PTA Legislation Conference in Sacramento. PTA representatives from al l around the state of Cali fornia convened on March 14th and 15th, 2016 to discuss the many impor tant issues affecting our education system and also to advocate on behalf of their ow n school distr icts. The Arcadia Unif ied School Distr ict (AUSD) was ver y well r epresented at the state conference, having a delegation of 15 individuals who represented the enti r e spectr um of our school system: school board, school distr ict administr ation, pr incipals, teachers, parents, and students.
Our Arcadia delegation, which apparently was the largest r epresentative group at the conference, included: Lor i Phi l l ipi (AUSD School Board Member ), Chr istina Aragon (AUSD Assistant Super intendent), Kevin Hr yciw (AUSD Assistant Super intendent), Carolyn Prater (AHS and Arcadia Counci l PTA/Parent), Travis Chen (AHS Student), Yiming Ye (AHS Student), Eugene Kao (Fir st Avenue PTSA/Parent), Ben Acker (Foothi l ls Pr incipal), Danae Popovich (Camino Grove
Pr incipal), Cour tney Ziska (Camino Grove Teacher ), Tina Cunningham (Highland Oaks
Pr incipal), Tammy Chaney (Highland Oaks Teacher ), Matthew Taylor (Highland Oaks PTSA/Parent), Cather ine Keyston (Holly Avenue PTSA/Parent & Fir st Avenue Teacher ), and Toby O?Dell (Hugo Reid PTSA/Parent).
At the conference, the attendees heard from numerous speakers, who represented the Cali fornia State Assembly, Cali fornia State Senate, Cali fornia Depar tment of Education, Cali fornia Depar tment of Finance, Cali fornia Legislative Analyst, Cali fornia School Boards Association, Association of Cali fornia School Administr ator s, Cali fornia Teachers Association, Cali fornia State PTA, and other organizations. There were presentations and discussions about assessments and accountabi l i ty goals for schools, state funding for education, and promoting family engagement in our education system. Some highl ights of the conference can be found at

There is a bi l l (Assembly Bi l l 2680) cur rently making i ts way through the state legislature that w i l l , i f passed, provide one-time funding for programs to encourage family engagement for each school distr ict choosing to par ticipate. Research has show n that attendance improves and student achievement increases when parents and guardians become more involved in their chi ldren?s school system and education process. AB 2680 is sponsored by the Cali fornia State PTA and was introduced into the state legislature by Assembly Member Susan Boni l la (who is a former teacher and former Contra Costa County Super visor ).

While the state?s budget for education has increased signi f icantly over the past few years, somewhat r ecover ing from the r ecession levels since 2008, the sober ing news heard at the conference is that Cali fornia sti l l r anks among the lowest in the nation in per -pupi l spending for K?12 education. Fur thermore, Cali fornia?s class sizes (pupi ls per teacher ) continue to r ank among the highest in the nation. The message that we heard from Sacramento is that state funding for education probably won?t be increased at the same levels in upcoming years, as the state legislature w i l l l ikely shi f t their attention toward other programs in the state budget that haven?t r ecovered as much since the 2008 recession.
This si tuat i on cer tain ly does not bode wel l for our Ar cadia school di st r i ct , wher e our appor t i oned shar e of the state funding for schools al r eady r anks i n the bot tom quar t i l e w i th in Cal i for n ia. Conceivably, our school di st r i ct i s possibly am ong the m ost poor ly funded in the nat i on. Although we are subject to the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), along w ith al l other school distr icts in Cali fornia, our Ar cadia school distr ict does not r eceive near ly as much supplemental funding for English-learners and low -income students when compared w ith most other school distr icts in the state,
even though our student population includes a signi f icant number w ithin these classi f ications. When also taking into consideration that (1) the LCFF base funding for our school distr ict sti l l has not r eached 2007 (pre-recession) funding levels, (2) there are state-mandated l iabi l i t ies and restr ictions adversely impacting our school budgets, and (3) our Ar cadia community has r elatively low par ticipation in local funding suppor t programs l ike the Arcadia Educational Foundation (AEF), our Ar cadia school distr ict is confronting major challenges w ith our school budgets in the coming years.
Compounding the problem is the false perception that our Ar cadia school distr ict is well-funded and doesn?t need additional f inancial suppor t because we are considered a ?wealthy community? and we have a high-achieving student population. Whi le we cer tainly do have expensive homes in our ci ty and we do have many outstanding, high-achieving students in our schools, the r eal i ty is that we don?t r eceive as much school funding as many people might think and that we defini tely need much more suppor t for our school system, or else we could be facing some tough choices in the future. These are the messages that members of our Ar cadia

delegation tr ied to convey dur ing the individual meetings w ith our state legislator s, Assembly Member Ed Chau and State Senator Ed Hernandez, who represent the legislative distr icts that include the City of Ar cadia.
In summar y, the 2016 Cali fornia State PTA Legislation Conference in Sacramento was a ver y wor thwhi le and informative event. Our large delegation r epresented the Arcadia school distr ict and the local PTSAs extr emely well , and col lectively we were able to provide a strong and impor tant message to our state legislator s. In par ticular , both of our two Arcadia High School student delegates, Travis Chen and Yiming Ye, were ver y engaging and eloquent par ticipants dur ing the conference and individual legislator meetings. They are both outstanding examples of Ar cadia?s excellent school system and tr uly exempli fy our high-achieving student population. However , our school distr ict defini tely needs more funding suppor t so that we can continue to have the excellent school system that cur rently benefi ts our community.

Parents, the state compulsor y education law says that students cannot have more than 3 unexcused absences in one school year. I f you pull your chi ld out of school for tr ips or vacations, these are not considered excused. Cali fornia Education Code states the fol low ing for unexcused absence or tardiness:

The State?s defini tion for excused absences are those that are for i l lness; quarantine; medical, dental, optometr ical, or chiropractic ser vices; or attending funeral ser vices for a member of the immediate fami ly. I f your chi ld is tardy to school and you send a note w ith your chi ld, i t is not considered excused unless i t is for one of the r easons l isted above.
