editor’s letter

With the end of the year right around the corner, our Club’s 60th Anniversary celebrations will soon be over. 2013 has really been a spectacular year for AICR. This 1953-2013 commemorative edition will be the last of the An-niversary series, which I hope you’ve enjoyed. Its focus moves continuously from past to present emphasizing lo scorrere del tempo and the importance of reconnecting with our Club’s roots by recalling its history, commemorating its founding and acknowledging the loyalty of all its members, in particular the longstanding members who have contributed in making the Club successful throughout the years.

Members like Chris Curry, actively involved in our Club since 2002, profiled by Danielle DeVine, who’s back with yet another superb piece for her new column Delizie, presenting an Autumn Wine Selection that will certainly tickle your taste buds. Talking about tickling, the comedians highlighted in the Short List (Robin Williams and Duo Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis) are bound to make you laugh, however if you prefer to be empowered and motivated be sure to check out Gary Quinn’s latest book and listen to Katy Perry’s new album. Read our Proust to get to know Massimo Di Capua better and what makes him tick. Dealing with some more pressing issues at hand in the financial field, qualified contributing writer Jason Jones is also back addressing some serious matters like how is this economy going to pan out and what’s the best investment option at the moment. In conclusion, I’d like to thank everybody who contributed in making this issue so special. Thus I’ve said enough, for I don’t want to spoil all the surprises in store for you in the next pages, so get comfy, keep reading and get ready to be dazzled!

Huge Potential for Buyers in Florida Housing Market?by Jason Jones

As house prices continue to steadily rise, Florida is becoming a key focal point for in-vestors looking for lucrative buying options.

So how is this market going to pan out over the next few years, and what are the best strategies in order to turn a profit in this re-gion? As a real estate specialist with over 20 years’ experience in the industry, I’d like to tell you about the current market trends and areas of opportunity in regard to the housing market and how to take advantage of them. From 2010 – 2011 California was in a similar situation as Florida is in today, with undervalued properties showing a slow but steady increase in their prices. Those who were wise enough to invest in real estate dur-ing this period are now reaping the benefits of the current boom that California is experi-encing – soaring prices and stiff competition for homes means that it is now a clear seller’s market. Now Florida is in a very similar situation to the one California was in three years ago. It has presently become an extremely attrac-tive prospect for investors with their finger on the pulse, looking to make substantial gains within the coming years. The important thing is to get your foot in the door before every man and his dog realizes what’s happening, for the value of properties is expected to steadily increase over the next 2-3 years. It won’t remain a buyer’s market for very long.

What’s the difference between Florida and states like California, Arizona and Nevada, who have had a much faster recovery?

One of the key factors in the sluggish re-

covery of the Florida housing market is the length of time it takes for foreclosures. The bank is required to file a lawsuit in or-der to repossess a home in Florida, so this process takes longer. This presents an under-valued market opportunity for those who are looking to make significant profits over a pe-riod of 3-5 years.

Housing market boost set to have stimula-tive effect on economy

With interest rates at such low levels, it is easier for people to borrow money in order to pay for things like homes. As the housing market in Florida continues to grow, this will have a knock-on effect in other areas, stimu-lating growth and boosting the economy. As the demand for homebuilding increases, so does the demand for furniture, tiles, floor-ing, lumber, concrete, furnishings, paint and household appliances of all kinds. All this extra demand creates more jobs, fuelling the recovery even further. As a direct result of the increase in homebuilding, there is expected to be around 500,000 extra jobs created this year in Florida alone and another 700,000 created in 2014. Since interest rates are ex-pected to rise significantly in 2014, now is the perfect time to make investments in prop-erties, especially in undervalued markets such as Florida.I always say: “A well-placed and timely transaction can mean the difference between financial struggles and resounding success. These lucrative opportunities will not be around forever, so the time to act is now.”

member profile

Member Profile: Chris Curryby Danielle De Vine

Chris Curry is 6 foot 1 inches of distilled Southern charm. With a gentle lilt in his Louisiana drawl and a kind word for all, he epitomizes the ideal Southern gentleman, and has put his considerable social talents to good use for AICR as one of its longest standing members since 2002, former Trea-surer, Vice President, President and current Board Member. What originally brought him to Italy was a stint in the U.S. Air Force at the controver-sial Comiso U.S. Air Base in Sicily. On his first day at the base, he decided to take Ital-ian lessons from a young Sicilian lady with a degree in Modern Languages. That was in May, and by December Chris and his language instructor were married, making national headlines and appearing on maga-zine covers for their “Love in the Shadow of Missiles.” Thirty years later, and several transatlantic moves behind them, Chris and Corrada Curry are as devoted to each other as ever.

Shortly after their marriage, they relocated to Louisiana, to be near the Curry family as well as to continue their respective studies. After fourteen years in Louisiana, having completed his Masters degree in Modern European History, with his thesis on a revolt in Palermo in 1647, Chris came to Rome to work on his PhD dissertation at the Vatican Archive. His focus was on the Sicily of the 16th and 17th centuries, when the Spanish ruled Sicily through governors and viceroys, and he was enthusiastically doing further re-search about that period in Sicily when he was offered a job at John Cabot University, where he wound up working for the next eight years.Long time member Dr. Nico Naumann was responsible for bringing the existence of AICR to Chris’s attention, mentioning that the club was looking for a Treasurer. Chris ran successfully for that position and along with then Club Manager Wendy Holloway, re-instituted the regular monthly financial

checkups, a practice that continues today. After two years as Treasurer, he was elected Vice President for three years, served as Club President for four years until 2010, and to this day continues his work for the club as a Board Officer. Chris attributes both the club’s appeal, as well as his own satisfaction in contributing to it, to its diverse range of

member profile

members and activities; “we do everything from hamburgers and hot dogs to the Black tie [dinner] at the Caccia and in between.”His favorite club initiative has been Casa di Kim. “It wasn’t my initiative, Roberto Mela-ragno was instrumental in that event, but it was so impressive to see those children and seeing they had life threatening illnesses and being able to give them presents. We were tired and didn’t have the energy to go to the first AICR event at the Casa di Kim, but we dragged ourselves out. It was so moving and so memorable to see people from all differ-ent countries and religions there.”Some of his proudest achievements during his long terms of service are that “the club is in such good hands. We are better off finan-cially. We had some lean years because we changed the membership rules to preserve the American essence of the club.” He was also responsible for adding the U.S. Ambas-sador to the United Nations Agencies in Rome as the Honorary Vice President, along with the US Ambassador to the Holy See; and in addition to the longstanding tradition of the U.S. Ambassador to Italy as the club’s Honorary President. His other joy during his service has been the people working alongside him. Marco Elser is “the backbone of the club. He is the rea-son we get to do the Circolo Della Caccia dinner and the Polo club event, and I’m very thankful to him. He’s so busy and gives so much of his resources. His generosity to the club has meant so much.” Community Ser-vice Chair Carol Markino “has done a great job with the community service initiatives” and club manager Nina Farrell “has done a great job over the years of making AICR also a place to cultivate business contacts.”Regarding the club’s history and its mem-bers, Chris states: “The way I see it, in the 1950’s we were the American Men’s Club, in the 70’s, women came in, and then in

the 90’s we became the American Interna-tional Club. And all this reflects society... I remember at one of the always wonderful AICR dinners at Anne Tasca’s, in her lovely garden, as I looked at this beautiful group of people, it came into my mind: this is a very unique, important group of people. Because this is not a club that looks back and tries to hold on to the past; it’s a club that looks forward, with the idea of friendship and be-nevolence. And who knows what the group will be like 50 years from now?”After 14 years in the Eternal City, does Chris see himself making Rome his permanent home? “Who knows. I didn’t think I would be here for more than one year, and that was 14 years ago. I’ve been Romanized, romanizzato. I have an Italian citizenship, Italian driving license, and I’ve been voting since 1995,” then with a chuckle he adds “and I’ve always made a mistake every time.”His advice to fellow expatriates and new arrivals to the Eternal City is perhaps not unsurprising: join AICR. “I think the club be-longs to the future, because it has adjusted for the needs of American and others, not just expats. I don’t like the term ex-anything, and our club is not just American, not just international or whoever, it’s like minded people with a smorgasbord of opportunities for people to connect.” Newcomers should “join AICR and use the AICR network to feel at home in Rome.”

What was happening in the world in 1953 when our Club was being founded?by Kathy Araco

As our Club celebrates its 60th Anniversary a question comes to mind...What was happening in the world in 1953 when The American Club of Rome was being founded? Many of us were not even born yet or were too young to remember, so let’s reminisce a little. Dusting off my history books, I gathered a few fun facts and some of the chief events which occurred in politics, economics, science but also in literature, cinema, and sports in order to have a better idea of what was happening at the time in the US, Italy and around the world. So sit down, relax and let the journey begin by turning back the pages of time and taking a quantum leap directly to 1953 where in the US unemployment was only 3%, a gallon of gas was just 20 cents, the first color tv set was sold for about $1,175, the New York Yankees won the 5th World Series in a row and Dean Martin sang the hit song That’s Amore. Abroad Churchill won Nobel Prize for Literature and Magritte painted the Golconda. Read about other interesting facts and events below.

Autumn Wine Selectionby Danielle DeVine

Autumn brings both a rich palette in foliage as well as the opportunity to pair wines with the structure and character strong enough to complement the heartier fare of the season.

DE’ NOTARI CRIO 12, from the prize wining 2011 vintage, is an ideal white wine for this time of the year. Produced by Frascati based Cantine San Marco, whose aim is to produce quality wine using modern technology while still respecting the territory, De’ Notari is a luminous straw colored white perfect for fish and white meats such as chicken and turkey. It has an excellent bouquet, with fruity notes in equilibrium with aro-matic herbs, and its actual taste does not disappoint. Using well-known national grapes Malvasia del Lazio, Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia di Candia, Bellone and Grechetto, De’ Notari Crio 12 boasts the perfect contrast between velvety softness and sapidità as the Italians term the quality of the aftertaste, almond-like in this case.ALAGNA (DOCG Cesanese del Piglio), from its award winning 2011 vintage, is an elegant red wine worth trying. It’s produced by Azienda Agricola Giuliani Marcella on a 40 hectare estate founded in 1870, and re-founded in 2002 by Marcella Giuliani, who established specialized organic farming and guided production methods for grow-ing vineyards and olive groves. Her main goal is to use quality production to bring out the best in the two typical local grape varieties, the Cesanese and the Passerina, famous during the Middle Ages and Medieval Papal courts. She certainly succeeds with Alagna, made from 100% Cesanese d’Affile and certified organic. Alagna has a strong aroma, with notes of both sweet and sour cherries and a subtle hint of wet earth and ink. Possessing a dense and robust ruby red color, Alagna also has an intense bou-quet and structure. It is quite tannic, but not unpleasantly so, leaving a tingling sensation on the palette that mingles nicely with a fruity aftertaste.COLLE DEL TURCHETTO (IGT Lazio Rosso), from the prize winning vintage of 2011, is a superb red wine highly suitable and bound to enhance any autumnal meal. Produced by the internationally known multi-generational winemaking family enterprise Dino Limi-ti, Colle Turchetto uses two grape varieties that are certainly not typical of Lazio: Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its rich bouquet has hints of blackberry and blueberry, cardamom, aromatic herbs, and a delicate whisper of coffee. Colle del Turchetto has a noteworthy concentrated ruby red color, an excellent structure, and leaves a lovely persistent after-taste, but its most striking feature is its extremely velvety softness. SESTO 21 (IGP Lazio Syrah), award-winning 2010 vintage, is a final recommenda-tion for a red. Produced by Alma Vini s.r.l. - Casata Mergè, Sesto 21 fulfills the Mergè winemaking family’s stated intent to “create a wine that respects the inherited traditions as handed down by my grandfather and revives his love for the land.” Blackberry and blueberry dominate the bouquet, while cinnamon and nutmeg are discreetly present as well. The wine has a dark ruby hue tinged with purple and is made from the inter-nationally used 100% Sirah grape variety. With a fairly high alcohol content, it has a warm quality and is quite persistent in its pleasant aftertaste. It is more acidic than the previously mentioned wines, but without being in any way abrasive, and it has an ac-claimed structure and much lauded body. A wine that is both smooth and pleasant and warm and persistent, Sesto 21 is an excellent choice to bridge the passing autumn and the forthcoming winter.

short list

Short List - What’s hot now!by Kathy Araco

Movie: Nuclear Nation. This eye-opening documen-tary films the consequences of the Fukushima nuclear di-saster that hit Japan following a major earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Revealing an infinitively worse situation than reported by the world media, more than a year later the population still remains without a home due to the persistence of nuclear contamina-tion. Suggesting that by striking a Faustian bargain with nuclear power, we might be responsible for these con-sequences and disasters. Surely something to ponder on and urge us to find better, safer alternative energy power sources that cannot backfire and harm us or our beautiful planet because our survival depends on it.

Album: Prism. Youth, beauty, talent and success. Singer and songwriter Katy Perry seems to have it all and more. With thirteen new tracks plus three extra songs available with the deluxe edition, her fourth album has a more introspective vibe to it and seems to be fruit of a deeper awareness. Starting from the title – like white light passing through a prism cre-ates a rainbow spectrum, likewise according to Katy “letting the light in” was a transformational process which inspired all her songs. She’s conscious about communicating mostly up-

lifting, encouraging and inspirational messages through her music, which is really admirable. Like Roar, she emphasizes is “about self-reflection and self-empowerment and learning to deal with the curve balls that life throws you every single day”. So if someone’s holding you down, follow the lyrics, get up and just ROAR-OR them away!

TV Show: The Crazy Ones. Who says crazy is bad? Some-times it’s good, especially if you’re Robin Williams, one of the craziest, funniest comedians ever who’s made a living out of making people laugh for more than three decades. Since Mork and Mindy last aired 32 years ago and tons of films in between, he’s now back on tv as Simon Roberts, executive at an advertising agency in Chicago. At his side the young Sarah Michelle Gellar, popular since Buffy, the Vampire Slay-er, who plays his antagonistic daughter and protégé. Sounds promising enough to view?

Book: The Yes Frequency. In this uplifting and motivational book, international best-selling author, life coach & speak-er, Gary Quinn shares his skills and insights by revealing a series of practical and efficient techniques to release fear, become more successful in every area of life and fulfill your dreams. All this is possible – so say YES, take action and begin today by letting Gary take you on this transformation-al life changing journey. You’ll learn how to let go of limitat-ing negative beliefs, unblock the natural flow of prosperity and tap into the frequency of abundance to start living now the extraordinary rewarding life – with unlimited possibili-ties – you really deserve.

1953 Classics: The Comedy Duo Martin & Lewis. After their 1946 début in nightclubs, during the early ’50s Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis became the hottest act in America. By 1953 The Martin & Lewis Radio Show was a hit, like their tv appear-ances on The Colgate Comedy Hour, a popular variety show. Plus in 1953 the movies Scared Stiff, The Caddy and Money From Home were released; they won the Redbook Awards and hosted the MDA Telethon to help raise money. 60 years later, their sketches and gags are still guaranteed to make you laugh…so be sure to check them out.
