Aircraft Carrier InvitationalThe eighth Annual Aircraft Carrier Invitational Golf Tournament was held on Oct. 7 at Ford’s Colony. This year’s tournament raised $5,000 for the American Cancer Society and $1,000 for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Southeastern Virginia. Over the last eight years, the tournament has raised more than $40,000 for local charities. On Dec. 8, Ken Mahler, vice president, Navy Programs, and Rob Spitzer, program manager, In-Service Aircraft Carriers, presented a check to the American Cancer Society.

“The tournament was very successful with over 200 participants and we raised $6,000 for a couple of great causes,” said Bruce Roberts (K69), tournament committee member. “It was an outstanding day all around with great golf, food, prizes, camaraderie, and competition but the big winners were the two charities.”

Shipbuilder Honored by Inside BusinessOn Dec. 15, Suzanne Beckstoffer, director of technology development, was one of 25 women presented with a 2011 Women in Business Achievement Award from Inside Business at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. The award celebrates women who have been successful in their businesses and careers, have made significant impacts on the business community and local economy, and have served as mentors and examples to others.

“I’m grateful for this award and the career opportunities I’ve had here at the shipyard,” said Beckstoffer. “I also strongly believe in volunteering. We need to give back to our communities and to use our talents and abilities to help others. Speaking with students about science and engineering careers and BayPort’s financial education programs for kids are two of my favorite things.”

O15 Shipbuilders Support Local Family For the seventh consecutive year, Security and Emergency Services shipbuilders have supported the Salvation Army by giving to a local family in need during the holiday season. The department raised money during the month of November to purchase gifts, food, and household items for the family. Remaining proceeds were used to give gift cards to two additional families in need. On Dec. 9, O15 shipbuilders delivered the items to the Salvation Army so they could be distributed to the sponsored families.

Shipbuilders Attend Autodesk UniversityIn November, 23 shipbuilders attended the Autodesk University conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference is held each year to train attendees on Autodesk products. The seminar typically includes more than 720 classes and labs as well as innovation forums designed to enlighten users on new ways to work, design and innovate. This year, a total of 29 certifications were completed and three shipbuilders placed in the top 10 of the “Top DAUG” contest. For more info, visit http://yardnet/divisions/eng/pages/aps_AU2011.stm.
