Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) christened the 10th Virginia-class submarine, Minnesota (SSN 783), on Saturday, Oct. 27. Minnesota is about 88 percent complete and is on track to complete in 62 months -- 11 months ahead of contract schedule. As many as 1,000 shipbuilders worked on Minnesota. “Shipbuilders are the faces of American manufacturing, American quality and American pride,” said NNS President Matt Mulherin. “They understand the important role they play in ensuring our freedom.”

Over the past several months, piping and ventilation shipbuilders in E21 and E58 have been transitioning into one department. To make for a smooth transition, the team, now identified as E21, has been hosting luncheons and after-work group outings to get to know each other. On Oct. 16, the shipbuilders were given blue “Team E21” t-shirts by department leadership as part of an activity to facilitate engagement among the team.

“Throughout the transition, I’ve learned that engagement is an intensely local phenomenon,” said Haidee Lockhart (E21). “It is exciting to see the commitment in everything we do as E21. In the future, we plan to designate special days to all wear our ‘Team E21’ t-shirts.”

QUALITY MONTH

As part of our focus on Quality this month, we are highlighting Quality Inspection this week. Inspection is not an easy job and it is the inspector’s responsibility to work independently from other shipyard workers to find deficiencies and get them corrected before they become bigger and more costly to the company or the customer. To ensure that Newport News Shipbuilding’s inspectors are highly qualified, the company has developed an extensive training program to ensure its inspectors are thorough and consistent in their inspection of our nation’s naval assets.

“It is our vision to be the leader in quality and performance excellence and be considered value added by our customers,” said Tom Chamberlain, director of Quality Control.

Inspection Within the Quality Organization

The “Tone-at-the-Middle” feature highlights what Newport News Shipbuilding managers are doing to apply company values and ethical standards to their daily work.

Tone-at-the-Middle

O57 ManagerPeder Wennberg

A: It is a separate topic in every weekly staff meeting held by myself and my management. We have many new people coming into the company and it is important to engage and impress upon them, as well as the veterans, what we stand for and what our expectations are. We emphasize, “know your procedures and work to your procedures.”

Q: What do you do to communicate the importance of workplace ethics and doing the right thing?

O95 ManagerWilla M. Williams

A: Ethical values and commitments come into play in every decision not just for middle managers. When you have to make a decision or a commitment it should be based on the facts at hand and doing the right thing. Doing the right thing applies not only to the immediate situation, but how it fits in the bigger picture. As Payroll Manager I have to ask myself if the same answer is the same each time the question is asked. If not, then I need to reconsider. As managers, we need to ask are we being consistent and fair in our decisions for the business as well as for our employees.

Q: How do ethical values and commitments apply to decisions middle managers have to make?
