The Greatest Travel Experience

Welcome to Haslemere TravelBarefoot Luxury

Luxury can stand for gold taps and marblebathrooms, shoes off and informal attire, or a combination of both; as long as theambiance and service are equally efficientand unobtrusive, we can all enjoy a taste of the highlife at a budget with which we are comfortable.

Barefoot favourites such as Kipungani SeaBreezes, Soneva Fushi and Marari Beachcontrast with Carlisle Bay, Royal Palm andOberoi, but only in style and feel; we all haveour personal preferences, that may reflect thecomfort and quality of our own homes, or thecomplete opposite that gives us the “getaway from it all” experience.

Tropical locations in the Caribbean, IndianOcean, Far East or Africa now boast such

a varied collection of rustic or opulent choices, small boutique style on deserted beaches, or larger ones with exclusive spas andentertainment facilities, individual cottages or hotel rooms with all modern fittings.

It is so important to be comfortable with thetype of hotel that you choose; the cost ofextras, the feeling of relaxation, the level of personal service, the variety of sportingfacilities and even some idea of the type offellow travellers that you will meet, these canall have an important impact on the overallenjoyment and satisfaction of overseasholidays. Some of these factors can beanticipated while others are pure chance, buta little extra investigation is often well spent.

Haslemere Travel made over 20 overseas invisits in 2006, attended many travelexhibitions and presentations, and benefited

from numerous networking visits fromhoteliers, who value our support and whoprovide the lifeblood of our ongoing and up to date knowledge.

This is part of that extra value that really doesmake a difference, and that does help toavoid the risk of choosing a holiday just onprice or on hearsay. Get a second opinionand make the right choice.

Budapest is a beautiful historic city ofcontrasts with some unattractive relics of itscommunist past overshadowed by thestunning Buda side of Castle Hill, St MatthiasChurch, the Fisherman’s Bastion and RoyalPalace overlooking the new part of Pest. Wewent there on a Sunday evening: our route up to it via steep streets and steps until wereached St Matthias on the summit (whereonce the kings were crowned, now used fororgan and choral recitals) with its wonderfulspire and multi coloured roof. Their Parliamentbuilding, in Pest, the new(er) part of the cityis enormous, reflecting Hungary’s position inEurope when it ruled under the Hapsburgdynasty. A magnificent refurbishmentprogramme has recently been undertakenand it has a splendid position on the riveropposite the castle.

Andrassy Street the main broad thoroughfareruns from the river to Hero’s Square. The zoois just behind this area as well as Hungary’smost famous restaurant, Gundels, partlyowned by the Estee Lauder family.

There has been a recent upsurgein really trendy restaurantsoffering all manner of food atremarkably low prices and it wasgreat to see so many Hungariansout and about enjoyingthemselves:

it is not just the tourists and overseasproperty investors who frequent theseeateries. Music has a strong part in life in thecity and everywhere we ate there would besome form of live music.

One of the most beautiful hotels, must be therecently refurbished Four Seasons GreshamPalace. Built in 1906 it was built for a BritishCompany, the Gresham Life Assurance Co, thebuilding much influenced by the Art Nouveaumovement, still boasts magnificent mosaics, stained glass windows, the magnificentwrought iron railings of the main staircaseand the three large peacock gates openingonto the central courtyard. Even if you don’tstay there, go into the foyer or dine at theexcellent Pava Restaurant.

The island of Meganissi lies just a 20 minuteboat ride away from the town of Nidri on theisland of Lefkas. The harbour is a bustling areawith fishing boats of all sizes: fishermen withbare feet and invariably a cigarette hangingfrom their lips, sit quietly on the groundmending their nets after the previous night’scatch. We were very fortunate to have amotorboat for the duration of our holiday sowe were able to potter around the harbourand small bays not accessible by road. On ourfirst day out on the boat we saw dolphinsplaying between the yachts – leaping fromthe sea to catch a better view of the peopleleaning over the edge of their vesselswatching the antics of thesebeautiful creatures.

We stayed in awonderful villa withbalconies & terraces at each level, allcomfortably furnished, with breathtakingviews over theharbour.

Tenerife in early July was enjoying perfecttemperatures – very settled and comfortablewith a welcome sea breeze in most areas Ivisited. There is an incredible difference in theclimate between the North and South of theIsland (not unlike Gran Canaria) – the south isarid whilst the north is lush and green wherebananas and other fresh produce is grown inabundance.

The Las Canadas National Park inthe centre of the island is home to the volcano Mount Teide fromwhose peak it is said you can seeall the other Canary Islands.

Please note that you do need a permit (free)to climb the peak. The park itself is anamazing terrain, from pine forests to lavaflows, and although Mt Teide hasn’t trulyerupted since 1909 there is still a certainamount of volcanic activity.

The ferry from Tenerife (Los Cristianos) to SanSebastian on La Gomera took just under anhour with Mt Teide keeping an eye on usthrough the clouds – a gentle reminder of just how close we were to Tenerife.San Sebastian is a bustling little port withcolourful painted houses perched on thehillside watching it all happen. Sheer cliffs, steep hillsides and deep green valleys withbirds of prey hovering over them were mostdramatic. Walking is probably the mostpopular activity here, though scuba diving andgolf are available at Playa Santiago a tinylittle port near our hotel (an hours drive fromSan Sebastian). Mountain biking is for thesuper fit only due to the lie of the land.

Tourism is in its infancy here and there arevery few locals who speak English –gesticulating goes a long way but a phrasebook, unless a Spanish speaker, would be a good idea!Linda 2005

For my last few days in South Africa I flew toMpumalanga to stay at Savanna Lodge in theSabi Sands Game Reserve, on the outskirts of the Kruger National Park. It was lovely tobe greeted on arrival by two friendly faces,Paddy and Jane (who used to work atHaslemere Travel) who took me to the tentedchalet which was my home for the next three nights.

Over the next few days I was treated tosightings of several leopard which was a wonderful thrill. Also seen; lots of rhinoincluding a female with the largest andstraightest of horns, and a ‘crash’ of bachelorssnoozing in the middle of the track. We keptcoming across a lone male lion whose ladieswere currently avoiding him. He was trying sohard to make communication and when heroared the vibrations were quite amazing. Thelittle family of hyenas was delightful to watch- hyenas really are quite pretty despite theirbad press - the youngsters were extremelycurious and came very close to the vehicleand the mother seemed quite unconcerned.

Cheetah and buffalo wereunfortunately elsewhere, but we did see some hugegiraffes and a deadly puff adder.

Savanna extends 5 star hospitality and‘bush surprises’. The food is very goodand the service excellent andunobtrusive. There is a small shadedpool with distant views over thewaterhole. I had a wonderfully relaxingtime here despite the early starts.

With the cottages being tented both inside andout but with solid walls and windows, one gets a real bush atmospherewhilst being treatedlike a VIP.

Tina March 2006

I visited South Africa in December when thetemperatures are beginning to rise and therains are finished. As well as a stay in theCape Area and two nights at Isandlawana in

Kwa Zulu Natal where we met up withRob Gerrard again, Robin and Istayed at a couple of game camps, one in the Kruger and one justsouth of Swaziland.

Rattrays, one of the camps at MalaMala , on the western border ofthe Kruger National Park, is aluxurious, elegant camp withevery amenity you could wish

for (including plasma TVs if you want them)but with an old style atmosphere, with verygood food and a good sized pool. There werelots of encounters with everything from dungbeetles to leopard and a very close one witha bull elephant – a scary moment!

Amakhosi, a 7 hour drive south, is much morelow key with lovely pieces of African Arteverywhere. Meals are taken in the diningroom, outside on the deck or in the Boma. The park is well stocked with game and the highlight here was seeing a mother cheetah with her two young cubs.

For a great East African travel experience, call Susie Pippa or Andrew on: 01428 658777

“Every couple wants theirhoneymoon to be really specialand with the help of HaslemereTravel ours was truly amazingfrom beginning to end.”

Our first stay at Matemwe Bungalows on thenorth east coast of Zanzibar was paradisefound! Morning tea on the veranda of ourbeach hut, eating in the restaurant or relaxingby the pool, the amazing view of turquoiseblue water and a white sandy beach, provided a stunning backdrop. The staff werefriendly, the service very personal and nothingwas ever too much trouble. The perfect placeto “chill out” after months of planning a wedding!

From Zanzibar we flew to Tanzania for thesecond part of our holiday …a safari.

Landing at Klein’s airstrip (literally a stretch of grass in the middle of the Serengeti) therewas, thankfully, a vehicle waiting to meet us.The scenery was just amazing and that waswithout the animals: on our way from theairstrip to the Lodge we came across threeelephants and some giraffes; we were soexcited already and from there it just gotbetter and better. Within half an hour of beingon our first game drive we were watching a cheetah with her 4 cubs.

Our rangers were superb and overthe next few days we sawleopards with their kill, lions, elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, waterbuck and more.

As Klein’s has a private wildlife concession wewere able to go on evening game drives andwere lucky enough to witness 12 lions hunt a buffalo. Although in “the bush”, Kleins is a little “lap of luxury”; the service andhospitality were first class, with our very own

butler to see to our every need. If nothingelse tempts you, it is worth visiting Kleins justfor the view from the bar!

Our next stop was Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. The Ngorongoro Crater is a World Heritagesite and as well as seeing plenty of wildlife, the views were spectacular too. We spentanother two days being fascinated by wildlifeincluding some which we hadn’t seen likehippos, flamingos and warthogs. We neverexpected to go away on holiday and learn so much.

The Ngorongoro Crater Lodge was trulyspectacular. The design and décor of the bar, restaurant and the suites was stunning; eachsuite had floor to ceiling glass, so we couldadmire the breathtaking views of the crater, and even watch a buffalo wandering throughthe garden.

Travellers’ Tales:Honeymoon Hideaway

This holiday was our first ever experience on safari; not only were we excited when we saw different wildlife (especially the bigcats), but the anticipation of what we mightsee each day was just as thrilling.

We were totally blown away by the wholeexperience of entering into the world of thesewild animals and being so close to them withno barriers in between. The African peopleare so warm and friendly and can not doenough for you….

The only sad part was that it had to come to an end and we had to come home….butwe will definitely be going back to Africa for more….

clothes at a local market, haggled with thefisherman for a couple of enormous prawnsand watched in amusement as thousands andthousands of ducks were taken for their dailyswim along the canals.

The beaches near Alleppy are so unspoiltwith just fishing villages, no high rise andthe one established hotel there isextremely relaxing spread over a largeacreage with coconut and all manner of exotic trees. We had a room with itsown private pool, a real luxury whichwe thoroughly enjoyed: the food wasgreat with friendly service….what morecould one want…. A perfect end to aperfect holiday….

The hot spot at the moment has to be CentralKerala in South West India – a wonderfullyhassle free area.

We flew to Cochin (Kochi) the main port ofKerala (the land of the Coconuts) and one ofthe largest natural harbours in the world.Cochin is made up of several islands includingFort Cochin where all the historical sites canbe found and Willingdon Island, a man madeisland and the main port, as well as themainland with its modern futuristic buildings.

A couple of nights was spent recovering onthe shores of Lake Vembarad at Kumarakombefore a tortuous drive up to Thekkady andthe Periyar Game Reserve. We weren’t drivingand can only thank the patience and nervesof steel of our wonderful driver/guide as hemissed the buses and lorries as they hurtledround the pin bends as they descended downfrom the Cardoman Hills towards us! that give that wonderful flavour to theregion’s cuisine – cardamom playing a very large role. Periyar is meant to have a large elephant population and elusivetigers…sadly, too elusive for us this time dueto heavy rains.

Our drive down to the coastal plain was on amagnificent day with fantastic. The highlightof our trip was on board our own airconditioned kettavallam complete with boatcaptain, engineer, cook and guide

A truly magical two days sailingacross the lake and along thewaterways and canals that makeup this huge area between Kochiand Alleppy. Wake in the morningto the temple music, the smell ofthe first cooking, the gentle calls ofgreeting drifting across the waters– life in the slow lane.

During the day the women washing theirclothes, the old men shaving, the young menbathing – all take place in this muddy brownriver. We were assured that fresh water issupplied for drinking and cooking! We visitedtemples, churches and shrines, bought some

beautiful sandy beaches, decorated withenormous granite rocks and coral reefs, are ideal for long walks, swimming, snorkelling and fishing.

There are many other hotels especially onthe outer islands such as Fregate, Alphonseand Desroches.

It is a perfect place for island hopping, orcombine this with a week on the larger islandof Mauritius or even Dubai for some shopping.

In 2007 the Seychelles will see the openingof several more luxury hotels, some on themain island of Mahe, others on their ownprivate islands – these include hotels to berun by Four Seasons and Shangri-la – addingto some of the world’s most enchantingresorts.

My first visit was to Denis Island, reached bya 30 minute flight in a 20 seater aircraft. It isa self sufficient oasis owned for many yearsby a Seychellois family with just 23 deluxecottages – none more than a minutes walkfrom the wonderful beach: this is a greatplace for those who wish to escape all thedaily pressures.

My first night back on the mainisland was at the stunning BanyanTree in the south of Mahe – thehillside villas, with their owninfinity pools, offer a high level of privacy as well as spectacularviews over the ocean; a wonderfulhoneymoon hideaway.

The next day we travelled all over the islandwith our first glimpse of the granite hillsidesand lush greenery with a quick stop in Victoria

Praslin, the next biggest island, is just a 15minute flight away; home to the Vallee deMai, a world heritage site and approximately4000 coco de mer palm trees. These take 3years to germinate and 7 years to mature, this is a protected species. A guided walkthrough the park will introduce you to themale and female palms and the biodiversityof the island – you might even be luckyenough to see a black parrot. The mostluxurious hotel on this island is Lemuria withtwo beaches (a third is accessible by boat or astrenuous walk), golf course and spa. There isalso a good nanny service.

My favourite hotel is the French coloniall’Archipel, which, like many of the hotels is built on a hillside leading down to a good beach.

From Praslin it is possible to take a ferry overto La Digue, an island with a simple way oflife, some 20 years behind the rest of theislands, a wonderful contrast, the only form of transport by ox & cart or bicycle. There areseveral small low key hotels and the long and

Sailing on the Royal Clipper, the largest fullyrigged five masted sailing ship in the world to have been built this century, is possibly thevery best way to the see the islands of theCaribbean. With Sunday sailings betweenNovember and April she alternates betweenthe Windward Islands and the Grenadines. With a maximum capacity of 228 passengersand a crew of 106, she is perfect for thosewho like informal cruising. Entertainment onboard is low key with talent shows or the everpopular crab racing; a few tropical punchesmakes for a perfect end to the day.

Each day would bring us to a new port, and forour group in particular, a chance to see thedifferent islands and visit hotels, from FortYoung on Dominica to the award winninghotels on Barbados, Antigua, the charms of St Kitts and the lushness of St Lucia – some of these were return visits, others a chance tosee places I had never dreamt I would visit.

A combination of a week on Royal Clipperand several days on one of the islands isa really great holiday experience andone I would highly recommend.

Paradisefound in the caribbeanAntigua offers a choice of hotels for all tastesand budgets from modern five star luxury, small family run hotels with a traditional feel,to all-inclusives complete with all theexpected activities. The food was excellentand the standard of service has certainlyimproved in the past couple of year. TheCarlisle Bay with its elegant minimalistic styleis quite stunning, set in a beautiful bay on alovely beach; Jumby Bay, on its own island, isquite unique. Curtain Bluff and Blue Watersare excellent small all inclusive hotels and theInn at English Harbour is an unpretentioussmall property, near Nelson’s Dockyard.

The Caribbean is renowned as a rest andrelaxation destination with snorkelling, sailingand diving being the main water basedactivities, but there is a growing variety ofexcursions on offer: a full day eco tour by

Caribbean 4 x 4 and boat are very popular and take youto the hidden places on the island searchingout the birds and marine life. If this is all toomuch spend a romantic evening watching thesun set from Shirley Heights or catch acatamaran sunset cruise and sip champagneas the sun goes over the horizon you mightbe lucky enough to see the legendary “green flash”.

I thought the beaches on Antigua were lovelybut those on Anguilla with the milkyturquoise sea and powder soft white sandwere truly captivating.

Anguilla is a little haven oftranquillity wrapped in blue. Sail, snorkel, swim with the dolphins, horse ride or take in a few artgalleries.

It is so easy to hire a car and sample one ofthe many excellent restaurants all over theisland. If shopping is a priority you can easilyhop over to duty free St Maarten 20 minutesaway by ferry.

I visited some lovely hotels; of which myfavourite was the Malliouhana, but Cap Julucais lovely as is Ku, all set on really stunningbeaches.

If you are looking for a holiday with adifference you could consider the LofotenIslands, north of the Arctic Circle, which Ivisited in November. The main airport here is Svolvaer, south of Tromso. The islands, which belong to Norway, are quitemountainous with rugged coastlines and small white sandy coves.

COLORADOAs our son was working out in Winter Park,Colorado we made a welcome return visitafter 25 years. It is the closest main resort toDenver and a great place for everyone frombeginners to extreme experts. We hired a carand stayed in the village where there is agood selection of shops, bars and restaurants, and caught the efficient, free ski bus to themountain base which is only 2 miles downthe road. Walking back to the apartment onenight we were amazed to see two mooseambling down the road towards us and not in the least bit concerned. Needless to say westood to one side and let them pass - theywere bigger than us!

There is also accommodation at the base of the mountain, the meeting place of theexcellent ski and snowboard school. Our sonis a snowboarder and assured us that theyhave 2 great snow parks catering for allstandards. The resort has great snow and along season, plenty of deck chairs for sittingout in the sun and mountain restaurants: liftqueues are minimal and well organised; theAmericans are very friendly and helpful.Where else would you find mountain helpersstanding at the entrance of the restaurantswith a box of tissues in each hand?

Off the slopes you could try dogsledging, take a photographicsnowcat trip or as we tried, tubing, which is great fun andinvolves hurling yourself down a hill on huge rubber tyres. All in all a great ski holiday and we willdefinitely make a return visit.
