Judith

I wonder if you are like me and made very sincere New

Year’s resolutions but find yourselves flagging now a bit?

The holidays are long over, Easter and the spring still feel a

good way off and it’s hard to be motivated. Well, in this

issue we have lots to help you find that energy again. Why

not try some fitness classes with Frankiefit p.10, or sign up

for a new weight loss package with Healthflex, p.29.

Heather’s tip to give you energy enough to get you through

the winter is to try juicing (Fitbiz p.28) .

Bored of your usual suppers? Why not try one of

Monserrat’s delicious home-cooked Spanish dishes

available to take home and pop in the oven (A Taste of

Spain, p.25.) She also sells a mouth-watering array of

Spanish specialities, sauces, olives, ham and cheese.

This week is your last chance to see the Jubilee Photo

Exhibition at the Museum, open until 2nd February. If you

haven’t been already, do go and see if you can identify

yourselves and your friends and play your part in the

History of Haslemere (see p.34).

Remember that charities and non profit making

organisations can include events on the Community Page

(p.37) free of charge. Just call 01252 792776 or email

[email protected] with any details of events.

In the meantime, keep warm…...

The Benefits of Hypnotherapy

The 4th December 2012 edition of the

Daily Mirror carried an article by Dr Chris

Steele, who has been the resident GP on

ITV1’s “This Morning” programme for the

past 24 years. Dr Steele is 67 and suffer-

ing from osteoarthritis in the knees.

Climbing stairs was agony - he was finding

it difficult to bend down and pick things

up, or play with his grandchildren. Long

term pain relief such as with anti-

inflammatories or codeine was

unattractive to him because of the side

effects.

Dr Steele had read about and researched a

device called the Alpha Stim. More

research has been carried out on this

product than on many drugs. Our nervous

system uses minute electrical currents to

communicate with cells throughout the

body. Using earclips and pads, the Alpha

Stim stimulates this system to produce

endorphins - naturally produced chemicals

that reduce pain and make us feel good.

Alpha wave production is enhanced and

that makes us feel relaxed. Blood flow

and oxygen is increased to the painful

area, reducing inflammation. Without

side effects.

Dr Steele used the Alpha Stim. The next

day he was amazed to find that he was

pain free. After a day or two he needed to

wear it again and found that the effect is

cumulative so that the pain free periods

between usages can gradually be

extended. He has now used it with other

people suffering from arthritis with similar

beneficial results and he regularly

promotes it on his programme.

Clinical hypnotherapy also affects the way

that the brain experiences pain. Many

operations are carried out each year using

hypnotherapy as the only anaesthetic.

Not everyone can achieve this depth of

trance, but most people can learn how to

reduce levels of chronic discomfort

through self-hypnosis to more acceptable

levels.

Richard Morley is a locally based clinical

hypnotherapist. He regularly uses the

Alpha Stim to enhance the therapeutic

process. He rents the devices so that they

can be used regularly at home. Many

people go on to buy one because they find

them so effective.

Richard is an approved Alpha Stim

practitioner. He is a tutor at the London

College of clinical Hypnosis and a full

member of the British Society of Clinical

Hypnosis. He is one of only a few

Certificated NLP and Health Practitioners

in the UK and a Master Practitioner and

Trainer of NLP. He is also an approved

therapist for the National Smoking

Cessation Institute (NSCI). He has helped

thousands of people from all walks of life

become happier, healthier and more

productive.

Richard holds clinics in Loxwood,

Guildford, Haslemere and Lewes and can

be contacted on 0845 6066089 or via his

website www.hypnonlp.co.uk.

ISN’T FAMILY LIFE MEANT TO BE LIKE EASTENDERS?

How do we know whether it’s worth the trouble to seek professional therapeutic help with our

relationships when they seem off track? We’re so busy it may seem simpler to get on with it,

trudging on alone hoping things will pick up at some point in the future. Increasingly what I find

in my consulting rooms at One Step Therapy is that couples and families come believing it’s

almost “too late”, already feeling frustrated, miserable, full of despair and rage. We all

understand relationship discontent builds up gradually layer by layer, slowly over time. Clearly

the moment to seek help is not after one row in an otherwise mutually loving and satisfying

relationship. Besides, it’s never usually the row which is the problem, it’s what happens

afterwards that counts. Often there isn’t time to sort things out and reach a better under-

standing with our partner or loved ones because life gets in the way, unpredictable events occur

when least expected and it’s time to move on to the next claim on our attention. Then when the

next row occurs as it always does, we heap another layer on top of the unresolved last, and so it

goes on. Until all arguments start over whatever the current issue might be and pretty soon end

up turning global and historical. And just the thought of trying to unpeel any layers of months or

years of miscommunication and misunderstanding feels exhausting. We all have expectations of

ourselves and the people we live with. Maybe, if we don’t feel that marvellous about ourselves

it’s more convenient to look round and feel dissatisfied with others.

Parents I see tell me they just want their teenagers to be happy. Couples explain that they really

don’t want to leave their partners but the spark, the emotional intimacy they used to share

seems suddenly elusive. Close connections with those who matter the most often appear distant.

It’s easy to look round at others and assume they are happier than ourselves. Just as they may be

assuming that about us. No-one ever truly knows the truth about anyone else’s relationships

except those involved.

So what are the ingredients that make a happiness pie? Who holds the recipe? Usually

someone else and it’s never been published with access to all. If only we could write that

particular recipe book we’d never have to worry about money again.

Of course it doesn’t work like that, we are all unique and run our relationships differently. What

works for some won’t work for others. We live in disposable times learning how to deflect

unhappy feelings via trips to the gym, or a shopping spree, employing techniques that make us

feel better for a short while.

It doesn’t have to be like that. At One Step Therapy we believe relationships come first. With

harmony reigning at home everything else is in life is less complicated.

Why write a Will? Why write a Will? Why write a Will? Why write a Will? Why write a Will? Why write a Will? Why write a Will? Why write a Will? A Will demonstrates lifetime care for others.

Do you have children or grandchildren?

Do you have a husband or wife or a partner ?

Is their security important to you ?

Is your Will quite old ? Is it good enough ?

• A married spouse does not inherit everything

in all circumstances.

• Orphaned children are NOT handed to next of

kin. They become the responsibility of the

Local Authority unless there is a Will which

appoints guardians.

• A ‘common law’ spouse/partner does not

inherit. That person has no automatic

inheritance rights.

D.I.Y Wills can cause terrible problems. Will forms

do not give advice or explain what can be

achieved. With the correct legal advice one can

achieve the following :

• The surviving spouse can be provided for

and trusts can guarantee the inheritance

of the next generation.

• Benefits entitlement can be protected.

• The inheritance of children of a former

marriage can be protected.

• Young beneficiaries can be prevented

from squandering their inheritance.

• Assets can be protected from Care Fees

in some circumstances.

• Widows/widowers in second marriages

should be very careful to maximise their

Inheritance Tax Nil Rate Band.

Wills predating 2007 should be reviewed as

important changes to the law of Inheritance Tax

occurred in 2007

Lasting Powers of Attorney operate during your

lifetime for your assistance.

What happens if illness or accident should occur

and you are unable to manage your affairs ?

• It may not be possible to access your assets or

income for your support.

• The management of your business may be

impaired.

• Your family may be caused needless worry

and financial stress.

• You may wish someone to speak for you

regarding medical treatment.

Without a Lasting Power of Attorney your

family would have to make a very expensive

Application to the Court of Protection for a

Guardianship Order. This is bureaucratic and

expensive. The Court may award guardianship

to a professional rather than to a family

member. This can be avoided if while fully

competent you sign Lasting Powers of Attorney

Documents which give authority to your chosen

person(s) to act for you.

Fitness Tip for

February

www.fitzbiztraining.co.uk

Struggling to stick to your New Years

resolution to eat better? Why not give

juicing a try? It's a nice thing to add to

your diet which will boost your nutrient

levels, increase your absorption of those

nutrients and more importantly, it feels

like a treat - a bit indulgent, sometimes

sweet, more exciting than water, and if

you pour it into a champagne flute to drink

it from, you won't feel left out if your part-

ner or friends are having a glass of wine!

Make juices from vegetables with a little

fruit to sweeten it up. Apple, beet root and

ginger is delicious (honestly!) as is fennel,

apple, lime and spinach... If you're not

convinced, try an easy orange and carrot

juice to get you started. Once you've tried

it you won't look back; you'll wonder why

you didn't try it years ago!

Transform Landscapes 01428 652222 www.transformlandscapes.co.uk

Ash Disease Ash Disease Ash Disease Ash Disease Ash Disease Ash Disease Ash Disease Ash Disease -------- Chalara FraxineaChalara FraxineaChalara FraxineaChalara FraxineaChalara FraxineaChalara FraxineaChalara FraxineaChalara Fraxinea What is it? It is a fungal disease that

kills the leaves and young

shoot growth on ash

trees and eventually the

whole tree.

As a disease it targets only

ash (fraxinus spp). It does

not affect mountain ash or

other ash leaved tree

varieties.

The disease spores can be distributed by wind,

rain or insects. However, the most likely and

wider spreading distribution of the disease is

through people transporting young affected

trees or ash cuttings from diseased trees.

In 2012 it was identified as having been brought

into the UK from a nursery in Europe. This

sparked a wider survey and it now thought to

be widespread all over the country.

However, there are pockets in the UK which

have been found to be disease-free. We are

within one of them, according to the Forestry

Commission mapping of 4th January 2013.

What are the implications if I have an ash

tree? Sadly, there are no cures or effective

preventative measures at present.

Ben Clutterbuck, HND Arb; M.Arbor A

Tree Care Manager, Transform Landscapes

Because of this people are asked to do what

they can to limit the spread of the disease and

if they have trees that might be affected to

address the problem as part of considered

management.

Therefore, if you have an unaffected ash tree,

enjoy it. It may not be the end for it as

current research shows that some trees have

a resistance to the disease. If your tree starts

to exhibit symptoms including lesions on

young stems or leaf die-back (summer) then

contact the Forestry Commission or seek

advice from a professional tree surgeon.

If you have any work done on ash trees on

your property please ask about the disposal

method used especially if you think there

could have been symptoms. If affected

material is removed from your property

without care it could increase the spread of

the disease.

The disease has been noted to progress into

the root stock of trees, therefore

preventing future regeneration. It would

therefore put the ash woodland of all

affected countries - an estimated 130,000

hectares - at risk if it is allowed to spread.

Further information is available on the

Forestry Commission website.

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM YOU! Do you have a horse and carriage/cart or

can you get access to one? Can you drive it

yourself or do you know someone who

can? If so, that’s just what the Haslemere

Players need for the pre-show publicity

“walkabout” for their forthcoming

production of the smash hit musical,

“Calamity Jane!”

The walkabout is scheduled for the morning of Saturday,

March 2nd

and the plan is that the principals of the show will

ride around the High Street and side streets of Haslemere, in

full costume.

Showing at Haslemere Hall from Tuesday 19th

– Saturday 23rd

March 2013 “Calamity Jane” was made famous by the film

starring Doris Day. It’s the heart-warming story of two peace

officers from Deadwood City in Dakota – Calamity Jane, and

Wild Bill Hickock, With wonderful songs such as The Deadwood

Stage, It’s Harry I’m Planning to Marry, Windy City, The Black

Hills of Dakota and, of course, the Oscar winning romantic

ballad, Secret Love, you are guaranteed a fabulous evening of

entertainment - Deadwood style!

If you can help, please contact Debbie Bowyer on 01428

656533 – there’s an invitation to the show’s Civic Night recep-

tion, in aid of Prostate Cancer Care and two hot tickets for that

evening’s performance for the kind person to get that horse

and carriage over to Calamity Jane!

Although it was more than six months ago, it would

be hard to forget the fantastic Diamond Jubilee

celebrations in Haslemere! From the colourful

procession into town to the marvellous concerts on

Lion Green, from an amazing cream tea for 3,000

people to the stunning fireworks at the top of

Farnham Lane – the day was an absolute triumph!

To celebrate this day to remember, five talented

photographers from the Haslemere Camera Club

have got together to create a huge portfolio of

memorable photographs from the Jubilee party,

exhibited at The Haslemere Museum until February

2nd

- so there are just a few days left to see these

wonderful photos.

The public has been asked to identify people they

know in the photographs, so that the Museum can

eventually archive them as part of Haslemere’s

history. You can also purchase pictures, in three

sizes, from the exhibition, with proceeds going to

the Museum. The official Jubilee video will play

constantly throughout the exhibition.

In addition, to celebrate Haslemere Museum’s 125th

anniversary, the public is invited to send in their

own photographs of visits to the Museum and the

various exhibits over the years for the 125th

photographic exhibition – the minimum size of each

photo is 5x7. The best 125 photographs, judged by

a panel of representatives from Keats Estate Agents

who are the sponsors, the Museum and the Camera

Club, will be turned into a fabulous Museum

Calendar for 2014, with any profits being ploughed

back into the Museum.
