HIS FIRSTTW

O YEARS

Themost popular, best-supported young British stallion – for a reason.

Acclamation – Aris (Danroad)THE NATIONAL STUD • Fee £9,500

The first foals by Aclaim performed well in the sales ring last year, selling for up to €120,000. Having covered over 250 mares in his first two season, the son of Acclamation will have plenty of progeny to represent him in the future.

Aclaim crowned his successful racing career on his final start when landing the 1400m Gr.1 Prix de la Foret. That victory was the seventh of his career and his fourth Stakes success. A maiden winner at two on debut, he was pitched into Stakes company on only his third start, finishing third in the Gr.3 Lacken Stakes at Naas as a three-year-old. He recorded his first Stakes success when taking the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup and followed up just three weeks later when winning the Gr.2 Challenge Stakes, defeating ten Stakes winners. At four, he ran Brando to half a length when runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, before seeing off five Group winners to score in the Gr.2 Park Stakes at Doncaster. Two weeks later, he made his final start a winning one when signing off in the Foret, run that year at Chantily.

He is out of the Listed-placed winner Aris (Danroad), a half-sister to the top-class Again (Danehill Dancer), winner of the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas, and the Gr.3-placed Arkadina (Danehill), both of whom are also black-type producers. They are out of an unraced half-sister to the influential sire Montjeu.

ACLAIMKodiac – Lady Lucia (Royal Applause)

WHITSBURY MANOR STUD • Fee £5,000 1st Oct SLF

The first two-year-olds by Adaay, of which there are over 90, are eagerly awaited and, as he is by the record-breaking sire of two-year-olds Kodiac, they should be seen on the track sooner rather than later. His first yearlings were well received at the sales in the last few months, with several six-figure prices being realised, headed by a half-brother to the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes and Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes winner Heartache (Kyllachy). Offered at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, he was snapped up by Shadwell, in whose colours Adaay raced, for £210,000. Of the other six-figure yearlings was a half-sister to Gr.3 Cornwallis Stakes winner Good Vibes, who is by Adaay’s stud mate Due Diligence and was also bought from the Doncaster sale.

Adaay himself was fast and precocious, winning his first two starts in May and June and coming third in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes in July, but he also progressed at three to win the Gr.2 Sandy Lane Stakes and Gr.2 Hungerford Stakes and was further Group-placed at four.

Having missed the yearling sales, he was picked up by Shadwell Estate Company for 240,000gns at the Craven Breeze-Up Sale. A half-brother to the dual Listed-placed sire Mullionmileanhour (Mull Of Kintyre), he is out of the Royal Applause mare Lady Lucia.

AFFAIR SOLITAIREDanehill Dancer – Arlesienne (Alzao)

ALLEVAMENTO RAZZA TICINO • Fee €3,000 1st Oct LF

Affaire Solitaire, who is embarking on his third season at stud, had one of his first foals sell for €30,000 last year. The son of Danehill Dancer was a tough and consistent performer over four seasons of racing in France, running 27 times between 1600m and 2000m.

Having made his debut over 1600m at two, he broke his maiden over 1900m at Deauville as a three-year-old. As a four-year-old, he raced eight times, winning twice over 1600m and earning his first black type when Listed-placed over 1900m. At five, he gained his first Stakes victory in the Gr.3 Prix Exbury over 2000m at Saint-Cloud and a month later he was runner-up to Al Kazeem in the Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt over the same trip at Longchamp. In four starts as a six-year-old, he was twice Group-placed, including on his final start when he was once again placed in the Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt, finishing third.

Out of the Listed-winning Alzao mare Arlesienne, Affaire Solitaire is a half-brother to the multiple Stakes winner and sire Aizavoski (Monsun), the Listed winner Andromeda Galaxy (Peintre Celebre) and the Listed-placed black-type producer Altamira (Peintre Celebre). Their dam is a full-sister to the dual US Gr.1 victrix Angara and a half-sister to the Gr.2 winner Actrice (Danehill), from an the family of Arcangues, Aquarelliste and Artiste Royal.

Dream Ahead – Macheera (Machiavellian)HARAS DE BOUQUETOT • Fee €7,000 LF

The first foals by Al Wukair arrived last spring and made a splash in the sales ring, selling for up to seven times their sire’s stud fee. He has covered around 120 mares in both of his books to date so will have plenty of representatives in the sales ring and on the track in due course.

He made a flying start to his own racing career, making a winning debut over 1400m at Saint-Cloud for Andre Fabre and winning the Listed Prix Isonomy on his next start to maintain an unbeaten juvenile record. Better was to come at three when the son of Dream Ahead made a winning return in the Gr.3 Prix Djebel. A fine third in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas to Churchill and Barney Roy, he was later placed in the Gr.3 Prix Messidor before going on to claim Gr.1 glory in the Prix Jacques Le Marois, when those in arrears included the subsequent dual Gr.1 Dubai World Cup victor Thunder Snow and the multiple Group winners Inns Of Court, Trais Fluors, Taareef and Gold Luck.

A 200,000gns yearling purchase, Al Wukair is a full-brother to the Gr.3-placed juvenile Dream Today and a half-brother to the Listed-winning dam of the Gr.3 Prestige Stakes winner Antonia De Vega. They are out of a winning half-sister to the twice Classic-placed La Nuit Rose (Rainbow Quest), dam of the Stakes winners Tam Lin and Blue Rambler, out of the Gr.1 Prix de Diane heroine Caerlina (Caerleon).

A £170,000 breeze-up purchase, Ardad made a winning debut in June over 5f and powered home on his second start to win the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot by three and a quarter lengths, defeating such as the future Gr.1-winning sprinter Battaash. BARRAQUEROZebedee – Chica Whopa (Oasis Dream)

CLAREMOUNT STUD • Fee €4,000

A £40,000 graduate of the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, Barraquero more than repaid that on his first three outings at two. The form of his debut third at Newbury was soon boosted when the winner Expert Eye easily won the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes next time out and later went on to Gr.1 success at the Breeders’ Cup. Barraquero himself won a 6f novice by six lengths on his next outing and then went to Goodwood for the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes. Despite more testing conditions than he had faced to date, he showed a fine turn of foot to come from behind and lead inside the final furlong, before drawing clear to win comfortably from fellow Pattern winners Nebo and Cardsharp.

Inbred 3x3 to Green Desert and from a speedy and precocious family, he is by the dual Group-winning juvenile Zebedee, who died late last year, and is a son of the Oasis Dream mare Chica Whopa. Rated the best European two-year-old son of his sire by Timeform, Buratino scored on the opening day of the 2015 British Flat season and finished placed in all eight juvenile starts. This was highlighted by following up his Listed (then) Woodcote Stakes win with a commanding two-length defeat of subsequent three-time Gr.1 winner Air Force Blue in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He then finished third in the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes and ended the year as runner-up to the European Champion Two-Year-Old Shalaa in the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes. His best run in five starts at three was when finishing fourth behind dual Gr.1 winner Quiet Reflection in the Gr.2 Sandy Lane Stakes.

Buratino is the best performer out of the Listed-placed Bergamask (Kingmambo), whose dam Adonesque (Sadler’s Wells) is a Listed-winning and Gr.3-placed half-sister to the Champion Irish Two-Year-Old, dual Gr.1 winner and Champion Sire Danehill Dancer, the Gr.3 victress Unilateral and the Stakes-winning, Gr.2-placed sire Colossus.

STARFIELD STUD • Fee €7,000 FFFR

Cappella Sansevero, who has moved to stand at Starfield Stud, got his stallion career off to the best possible start last year when his first crop son Pierre Lapin, a half-brother to the top-class sprinter Harry Angel, triumphed in the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes.

It is little surprise that Cappella Sansevero’s progeny showed plenty of early speed as the son of Showcasing was himself a high-class and precocious juvenile. He made a winning debut in April, triumphing by more than five lengths, before defeating the subsequent Gr.1 winner Dick Whittington in conditions company. He made his Stakes debut on his next start, winning the Listed Marble Hill Stakes and then changed hands for £1.3m at the Goffs London Sale, prior to running a fine second in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes. Having been third in the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes, he triumphed in the Gr.3 Round Tower Stakes, ending his juvenile season with four victories and three places from his eight starts.

Cappella Sansevero is out of a winning Royal Applause mare, who is a half-sister to Eldalil (Singspiel), runner-up in the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes. They are out of a half-sister to the high-class middle-distance performer Little Rock (Warning) as well as the top mare Whitewater Affair (Machiavellian), who has produced two Gr.1 winners in Japan, including the Champion and Gr.1 Dubai World Cup winner Victoire Pisa.

A 625,000gns yearling purchase, Charming Thought emulated his sire Oasis Dream in winning the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes, having previously won twice. At Newmarket he defeated a field that included the dual Gr.2-winning juvenile and subsequent Classic-placed Ivawood, the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes winner and subsequent Champion Sprinter Muhaarar and the dual Gr.2 winner Kool Kompany.

HARAS DES ETINCELLES • Fee €2,500 LF

Diamond Green began his stud career in Ireland before moving to France in 2011, where he stands this season in his new home at Haras des Etincelles, standing for €2,500.

His early stud career was highlighted by the Gr.1 Beverly D Stakes heroine Watsdachances, who also collected two US Gr.3 contests, and from his first French-conceived crop came the Listed winner Sexy Metro, also runner-up in the Gr.2 Prix Robert Papin. The nine individual winners from his first french crop were enough to secure him the runner-up spot behind Siyouni for French-based sires of two-year-olds that year. He has also enjoyed success with his jumpers, including the Listed winner Isabe and the Gr.3-placed winner Full Glass.

Unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old, culminating in the Gr.3 Prix la Rochette at Longchamp, he was runner-up by half a length in the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains and continued to prove his credentials as a top miler when beaten a neck by Azamour in the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes and a length by Grey Lilas in the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin. He finished third in Gr.3 company on his final start in France on his four-year-old debut. Transferred to the care of Bobby Frankel, he was twice Gr.3-placed in North America at five.

Out of the Gr.2-placed Akarad mare Diamonaka, he is a half-brother to the Gr.2 winner Diamilina (Linamix), grandam of the Gr.1 Irish Derby and Gr.1 St Leger victor and new sire Capri.

Dream Ahead – Mathuna (Tagula)HARAS DE LA BARBOTTIERE • Fee €4,000

New to the French stallion ranks this spring is Donjuan Triumphant, a winner seven times up to 7f.

One of three top-level winners by Dream Ahead, himself a multiple Gr.1 winner at both two and three, he enjoyed his finest moment on his 37th and final start when defeating 16 high-class rivals in last October’s Gr.1 British Champions Sprint Stakes. After finishing placed on his first four juvenile outings, he then won three in a row, including a wide-margin success in the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte. He was placed five times at three, including seconds in the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and Gr.2 Sandy Lane Stakes, and won a valuable heritage handicap at four. He was a Listed winner and third in the Gr.1 British Champions Sprint in 2018 and, last season, was a Gr.3 runner-up at Ascot before his Gr.1 victory. He cost his connections 30,000gns as a Tattersalls breeze-up sale graduate and retired with more than £800,000 in the bank.

His dam, who won at two in France, has also produced the juvenile Listed winner Caledonian Spring (Amadeus Wolf) and is a half-sister to Gr.3 victrix Wilside (Verglas) and the Gr.2-placed Listed winner Round Heels (Daggers Drawn). His grandam is a half-sister to the Classic-placed Listed scorer Sestino (Shirley Heights) and his fourth dam is the Italian Champion Mariella (Sir Gaylord).

His headline act was arguably the filly Good Vibes, who landed the Gr.3 Cornwallis Stakes and the Listed Marygate Stakes and was third in the Gr.2 Lowther Stakes, while Streamline won the Gr.3 Sirenia Stakes, and Sir Boris took the Listed Blenheim Stakes and was placed in the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte.

Due Diligence only made two starts at two for Todd Pletcher in the USA, winning the first by eight lengths and then coming fourth in the Gr.3 Pilgrim Stakes, but he progressed at three when switched to Aidan O’Brien’s yard, winning the Listed Lacken Stakes at Naas and coming second in the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot the year before the race was closed to three-year-olds and the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup was introduced.

A son of leading sire War Front, he is out of the Listed winner Bema (Pulpit), who also produced the Gr.3 Bourbon Stakes-palced Ocasta (Cherokee Run). Bema’s dam, the dual Listed winner Dhaka (Icecapade), is the grandam of the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes scorer and Gr.1 2,000 Guineas runner-up Tip Two Win (Dark Angel) and is a half-sister to the Gr.3-winning sire Siebe.

ECTOTHurricane Run – Tonnara (Linamix)

HARAS DE BOUQUETOT • Fee €5,000 LF

Ectot, whose oldest crop are now yearlings, was a top performer, winning Gr.1 contests at both two and four and scoring from 7f to 1m4f on all types of ground.

His only defeat at two came when he was runner-up on his debut to subsequent multiple Gr.1 winner Karakontie, and he went on to win his next four starts, adding a Listed success and a three-length victory in the Gr.3 Prix des Chenes to his cv before crowning his season with victory in the Gr.1 Criterium International. He returned at three to win the Gr.3 Prix de Fontainebleau and also scored in the Gr.2 Prix Niel, while at four he was also Gr.3-placed. Transferred to the care of Todd Pletcher at five, he turned in a power-packed performance to win the Gr.1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, making all in the 1m4f contest to defeat the multiple Gr.1 winner Flintshire by five lengths.

By the European Champion Three-Year-Old and four-time Gr.1 winner Hurricane Run, he is a half-brother to the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes victor and sire Most Improved (Lawman), out of a Linamix half-sister to the Gr.3 winner and Gr.2-placed Albisola (Montjeu), the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Johnny Barnes (Acclamation) and to the dam of the Gr.3 winners Thikriyaat (Azamour) and Daban (Acclamation), also Classic-pla from a family of numerous black-type performers.

EQTIDAARInvincible Spirit – Madany (Acclamation)

NUNNERY STUD • Fee £6,500 1st Jan SLF

Eqtidaar followed in the footsteps of his fellow Nunnery Stud stallion Muhaarar by recording his biggest triumph in the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup, scorching home in 2018 to defeat such top performers as Sands Of Mali, Invincible Army, Unfortunately and Sioux Nation.

That performance was the crowning point of a career that began with a debut victory at two and also included a fine second to another son of Invincible Spirit in Invincible Army in the Gr.3 Pavilion Stakes at Ascot, a month before his victory at the Royal meeting.

A son of sire of sires Invincible Spirit, Eqtidaar is a half-brother to the Gr.2 Hungerford Stakes winner Massaat (Teofilo), who was also runner-up in both the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes and Gr.1 2,000 Guineas. They are out of the speedy Acclamation mare Madany, who scored twice over 6f at two and is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Prix du Bois winner Dolled Up (Whipper), as well as the Listed-winning juvenile Zeiting (Zieten), whose Stakes-winning progeny include the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Scottish (Teofilo), the Gr.2 winner Combat Zone (Refuse To Bend) and Royal Empire (Teofilo), successful in Gr.3 company, as well as the Gr.3-placed dam of the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Precieuse (Tamayuz). Other Pattern winners in the family include Volochine, Infamous Angel and the Classic-placed Libertine.

FASCINATING ROCKFastnet Rock – Miss Polaris (Polar Falcon)

BALLYLINCH STUD • Fee €7,000

Fascinating Rock’s yearlings realised prices of 140,000gns, €160,000 and €100,000 at last year’s sales and they will be tried and tested on the racecourse this year.

Unplaced in his sole educational start at two, the son of Fastnet Rock hit his stride at three when winning the Gr.3 Ballysax Stakes and the Gr.3 Derby Trial Stakes back-to-back. He went on to win two Gr.3s and finish runner-up to Al Kazeem in the Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup before finishing his season by landing the Gr.1 Champion Stakes. Crowned Joint Irish Champion Older Horse in 2015 and 2016, Fascinating Rock rounded out his career by beating Found by almost four lengths when retaining his title in the Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. The 127 Timeform-rated bay also gained two Gr.3-placings in as many starts before retiring to stud.

He is a half-brother to the Gr.1 Galway Hurdle victor Quick Jack (Footstepsinthesand), out of the dual winning full-sister to Listed victor Euro Falcon and half-sister to a trio of Listed-placed siblings, including the dam of the Gr.2-winning chaser Manou. The third dam produced the Gr.2-winning and Gr.1 Prix de la Foret-placed sire Gothenberg, the Gr.2-placed Omaha City and the placed dam of Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes runner-up Amadeus Mozart.

FIRST ELEVENFrankel – Zenda (Zamindar)

YEGUADA TORREDUERO • Fee €3,500 SLF

First Eleven, who enters stud in Spain at Yeguada Torreduero, offers breeders access to one of the hottest sirelines around at present, being a son of Frankel and a half-brother to Kingman (Invincible Spirit), who, as well as being a top-class miler himself, scaled the heights with his first crop of three-year-olds last year. Another half-brother is the Gr.3 Tercentenary Stakes winner Remote (Dansili), also now at stud. They are out of the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Zenda (Zamindar), also Gr.1-placed in Britain and the US and a half-sister to the leading sire Oasis Dream.

First Eleven was himself a smart performer for John Gosden and Khalid Abdullah. Although he did not win as a juvenile in three starts, he ran with great promise on his final appearance, when runner-up over a mile at Newbury. He returned at three to be runner-up again in handicap company at Salisbury in April, before breaking his maiden in style at Newbury in May, triumphing by five lengths. Next time out, he was third in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, denied by only a neck and a nose and clear of the subsequent Gr.1 Melbourne Cup victor Cross Counter. Successful later that year in a heritage handicap over 1m4f back at Ascot, he was also Gr.3-placed at the same venue in the Cumberland Lodge Stakes and returned at four to win a1m4f handicap at York.

Galileo – Hawala (Warning)THE NATIONAL STUD • Fee £4,500 LF

Flag Of Honour (Galileo), who starts his stud career at The National Stud this year, offers breeders an intriguing option, being a Gr.1 Irish St Leger victor, who also had the precocity to win a Gr.3 as a juvenile.

Although he did not debut until September of his two-year-old season, Flag Of Honour was soon off the mark with an easy maiden victory at Naas over 7f, before he landed the Gr.3 Eyrefield Stakes over 1m1f on his final start at two. Beaten only half a length when third in the Gr.3 Prix Noailles on his debut at three, he landed the Gr.2 Curragh Cup in July and added the Gr.3 Irish St Leger Trial Stakes to his tally in August, before progressing to victory in the Gr.1 Irish St Leger the following month, defeating the Gr.1 Irish Derby victor Latrobe by nearly three lengths. Although he did not win at four, he performed with honour when runner-up to Magical in the Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, Gr.2 Mooresbridge Stakes and Gr.3 Alleged Stakes, all over 1m2f.

While his Gr.1 victory came over 1m6f, it is interesting to note that Flag Of Honour is a half-brother to a pair of speedy performers in the Gr.3 winner and sire Air Chief Marshal and the 6f-7f Listed winner and sire Misu Bond, as well as the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas runner-up Foxtrot Romeo, all by Danehill Dancer, and the 5f Listed winner Slip Dance (Celtic Swing), while their dam won over 1m.

Oasis Dream – Attraction (Efisio)BEARSTONE STUD • Fee £3,500 1st Oct SLF

Bearstone Stud enjoyed another fine year in 2019, highlighted by its homebred Glass Slippers (Dream Ahead) winning the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye and the first runners by resident stallion Fountain Of Youth. As a horse that achieved his best form at three, one can expect Fountain Of Youth’s progeny to progress also. The best of them was arguably Gravity Force, another Bearstone homebred, who won over seven furlongs and was fourth in the Gr.3 Horris Hill Stakes over the same distance at Newmarket.

He is a half-brother to the Gr.2 York Stakes winner Elarqam (Frankel) and the dual Gr.3-placed Cushion (Galileo), out of the Efisio mare Attraction, whose top-level victories took in the 1,000 Guineas, Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Sun Chariot Stakes and Matron Stakes.

Fountain Of Youth, a 420,000gns Tattersalls yearling purchase, was trained by Aidan O’Brien and won his maiden at two by four lengths over five furlongs at the speed-favouring Tipperary track before finishing a close fourth, beaten only three quarters of a length, in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. Off the track for the best part of a year, he later won the Gr.3 Sapphire Stakes against older rivals again over the minimum trip at the Curragh and ended his career with South African trainer Mike de Kock as part of his team in Dubai.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH FRONTIERSMANDubawi – Ouija Board (Cape Cross)

OVERBURY STUD • Fee £1,000 1st Oct SLF

Frontiersman was well-received by breeders last year in his first season at Overbury Stud, covering over 60 mares.

The son of Dubawi offers breeders the combination of a high-class race record with a top-class pedigree. He is a half-brother to the Champion Australia, a multiple Gr.1 winner and now a classy sire, as well as Voodoo Prince (Kingmambo), a Gr.3 winner in Australia. They are out of the mighty Ouija Board (Cape Cross), the globe-trotting seven-time Gr.1 winner from the top family of such as Teleprompter and Roseate Tern.

Foaled two years after Australia, Frontiersman did not race at two but broke his maiden at three on his second start, winning over 1m2f at Newbury. He went on to record an easy handicap victory at Newmarket over 1m4f and added a second such success to his tally at four over course and distance. Pitched into Gr.1 company on his next start, he acquitted himself with honours, running the top-class Highland Reel to a length and three quarters when second in the Coronation Cup. He went on to be second to Hawkbill in the Gr.2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes and third in the Gr.3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes before recording his first Stakes victory in the Listed Godolphin Stakes. As a five-year-old, he was second by a head to Hawkbill in the Gr.2 Dubai City of Gold over 1m4f at Meydan.

Galileo – Danzigaway (DanehillHARAS DE COLLEVILLE • Fee €10,000 LF

Galiway got off to a great start at stud last year, with his five individual winners from 11 runners earning him the title of leading French-based first crop sire. That first crop was headlined by the Gr.3 Prix la Rochette winner Kenway, also successful in Listed company, while the winning filly Galova was also Listed-placed. Unsurprisingly, Galiway’s sire success on the racecourse also led to popularity in the sales ring again last year, where his second crop of yearlings sold for up to €62,000.

The son of Galileo was himself a smart juvenile, making a winning debut at Saint-Cloud over 1600m before finishing runner-up to Piping Rock in the Gr.3 Horris Hill Stakes. At three, he finished third to Ectot and Karakontie on his seasonal debut in the Gr.3 Prix de Fontainebleau, before rounding off his career with a Stakes victory in the Listed Prix Le Fabuleux at Maisons-Laffitte over 1800m.

Galiway is a half-brother to Silent Name (Sunday Silence), a Listed winner in France who went on to land a pair of Gr.2s in the US, where he was also Gr.1-placed, as well as to the Gr.1-placed juvenile Salto (Pivotal), the Listed-placed Madaway (Machiavellian) and the winning dam of the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Slalom (Intello). He is out of the Gr.3 Prix Perth winner Danzigaway (Danehill), a half-sister to the Champion Miler and sire Gold Away (Goldneyev) and the Gr.3 winner Blushing Gleam (Caerleon).

GALIWAY GARSWOODDutch Art – Penchant (Kyllachy)

HARAS DE LA HUDERIE • Fee €5,000 1st Oct LFFR

Garswood began his stallion career at Cheveley Park Stud and makes the move to France this year, where his best progeny to date have enjoyed their finest hours.

His progeny are headlined by Little Kim, who triumphed in the 2018 Gr.3 Prix du Bois, as well as Cala Tarida, who landed the Gr.3 Prix des Reservoirs in the same season, having earlier also been Listed-placed in France.

Garswood was himself precocious as a juvenile, winning the Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes at two and going down by a head to Bungle Inthejungle in a close finish for the Gr.3 Cornwallis Stakes. At three, he returned to win the Listed European Free Handicap over 7f and was seventh in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas over a trip that was longer than his best, before resuming winning ways in the Gr.2 Lennox Stakes over 7f at Goodwood. He signed off at three with third place in the Gr.1 Prix de la Foret, denied the runner-up spot by only a short neck, but gained his breakthrough top-level triumph the following season when winning the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest.

He is a half-brother to the Gr.2-placed juvenile Zagitova (Galileo) and is out of an unraced three-parts sister to the Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes winner and Gr.1 runner-up Infallible (Pivotal), dam of the Gr.1 performers Veracious and Mutakayyef.

GOKENKendargent – Gooseley Chope (Indian Rocket

HARAS DE COLLEVILLE • Fee €3,000 LF

The first crop by the high-class sprinter Goken (Kendargent) will make their racecourse debuts this year, with the young sire having covered over 90 mares in his first book. His first yearlings sold for up to €50,000 last year and averaged over seven times his €3,000 stud fee.

Having broken his maiden at the second attempt when winning by eight lengths over 1000m at Chantilly in April of his juvenile season, Goken went on to triumph by two lengths in the Gr.3 Prix du Bois and rounded off his two-year-old season when third in the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte behind the Group winners Mattmu and Queen Bee. At three, he triumphed in the Gr.3 Prix Texanita over 1100m and also won the Listed Golden Rose Stakes in Britain, while the highlight of his four-year-old career came when third, beaten a length and a quarter, in the Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes behind Profitable, with Gr.1 winners Jungle Cat, Mecca’s Angel, Move In Time and Mongolian Saturday among those in arrears.

Goken is a full-brother to the winner Gokena and they are out of the dual juvenile winner Gooseley Chope (Indian Rocket), herself a daughter of the German Listed winner Gooseley Lane (Pyramus). As a son of Kendargent from an Indian Ridge-line mare, he also offers that increasingly rare thing – an outcross to Northern Dancer, Mr Prospector and Never Bend.

Cape Cross – Guadalupe (Monsun)HARAS D’ANNEBAULT • Fee €4,500 LF

Guignol, a well-related German-bred son of Cape Cross, is embarking on his second season at Haras d’Annebault.

The eight-year-old did not get the recognition he deserved on the track, probably due to missing most of his Classic season, though he won three Gr.1 races and was placed in another. On his debut, one of just two starts at three, he beat the subsequent five-length Gr.1 Deutsches Derby winner Nutan. Returning to action after a ten-month break, he won by a street at Krefeld and, after places in the Gr.2 Hansa-Preis and Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Berlin, won the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Bayern, defeating Gr.1 winners Hawkbill, Iquitos and Sirius. At five, he beat multiple Gr.1 winners Iquitos, Windstoss and Best Solution in the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Baden and won a second Grosser Preis von Bayern, beating Iquitos, Dschingis Secret and Waldgeist.

His dam Guadalupe (Monsun) won the Gr.1 (then) Oaks d’Italia and was placed in three other Gr.1s, and has produced three other Stakes horses, including Gr.1 winner Guiliani (Galileo) and dual Listed victrix Guantana (Dynaformer; dam of triple Group winner Guardini and Listed winner Gouache). Guadalupe is a full-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner and sire Getaway and is out of a half-sister to the dual Gr.1 Gold Cup winner Royal Rebel.

HARZANDSea The Stars – Hazariya (Xaar)

GILLTOWN STUD • Fee €8,000 LF

Harzand, the fifth dual Derby winner for his owner-breeder The Aga Khan, saw his first yearlings achieving up to 130,000gns last autumn.

Unplaced on his only start at two, the son of Sea The Stars broke his maiden on his seasonal debut at three, defeating nine runners by a staggering 16 lengths over 1m2f. Two weeks later, he triumphed in the Gr.3 Ballysax Stakes, beating the classy performer Idaho. The pair met again 55 days later at Epsom when Harzand found more under pressure to take the Derby by a length and half from US Army Ranger with Idaho in third. The first and third would clash again later that month in the Gr.1 Irish Derby and again, Idaho had no answer to the finishing flourish of Harzand, on what would be the latter’s final victory.

From an outstanding Aga Khan family, he is a half-brother to the Gr.3-winning and Gr.1-placed juvenile Harasiya (Pivotal), the Gr.3-placed Haziyna (Halling), Hazarafa, a Listed winner and dam of dual Gr.3 winner Hazapour (Shamardal), and the Listed winner Haripour (Shamardal). Their dam, Hazariya (Xaar), was a Gr.3 and Listed winner and is a half-sister to the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Hazarista (Barathea). Other top performers in the immediate family include the Gr.1 winner Seal Of Approval (Authorized) and Streama (Stratum), a multiple Gr.1 winner in Australia.

Dark Angel – Alikhlas (Lahib)YEOMANSTOWN STUD • Fee €6,000 1st Oct

From a sire line of lightning-fast juvenile performers, Gutaifan’s first crop followed suit with 32 winners, five of which are rated over 90, and a Leading First Crop Sire title added to his accolades.

Having covered sizeable books in each of his seasons at stud to date, the son of Dark Angel achieved up to £95,000 for his yearlings at the autumn sales last year.

In the same mould as his leading sire, Gutaifan raced seven times at two, his only season to run, winning four times and placing twice. Second on debut in June, he broke his maiden ten days later, the first of a hat-trick of victories that culminated with success in the Gr.2 Prix Robert Papin, defeating the subsequent Gr.2 Gimcrack winner Ajaya. Runner-up to Shalaa next time out in the Gr.1 Prix Morny, he resumed winning ways with victory in the Gr.2 Flying Childers, in record time, defeating Stakes winners including the Gr.3 winner Bear Cheek.

He is a half-brother to seven winners, including the Listed-placed juvenile Cest Notre Gris (Verglas) and the winning dams of the Group-placed trio Alhaban, Haikbidiac and Eagle Rock. They are out of a half-sister to the Listed winner and Gr.2-placed Sahool, dam of Gr.3 winner Laraaib, and to the dam of the high-class Maraahel and grandam of Gr.1 Lockinge and triple Gr.2 winner Mustashry.

HAVANA GOLDTeofilo – Jessica’s Dream (Desert Style)

TWEENHILLS FARM & STUD • Fee £10,000 1st Oct SLF

Havana Gold made a flying start to his stud career, with the six Stakes winners from his first crop headed by the Gr.1-winning sprinter Havana Grey, who is also now at stud. Last year saw him represented by Stakes performers in Ireland, France, Hong Kong, the US and Qatar. His stock continue to meet with approval in the sales ring as well, with his 2019 yearlings selling for up to 125,000gns.

A son of Teofilo, Havana Gold was a high-class juvenile who improved again as a three-year-old to land his top-level success. A winner on his juvenile debut at Newmarket, he earned his first black type when winning the Listed Ascendant Stakes over 1m at Haydock. He went on to add the Gr.3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes to his record and was runner-up by a head in a valuable Tattersalls sales race on his final juvenile start. At three, he was runner-up to Toronado in the Gr.3 Craven Stakes on his seasonal debut and earned his breakthrough Gr.1 success in the Prix Jean Prat, defeating Gr.1 winners Mondialiste, Style Vendome and Lines Of Battle.

He is a half-brother to the Listed-placed Solar Gold (Sea The Stars) and three other winners, out of the dual Gr.3-winning sprinter Jessica’s Dream (Desert Style), a half-sister to the Listed winner and twice Gr.1-placed Majors Cast (Victory Note).

HAVANA GREYHavana Gold – Blanc De Chine (Dark Angel)

WHITSBURY MANOR STUD • Fee £6,500 1st Oct SLF

Whitsbury Manor Stud’s Gr.1-winning sprinter Havana Grey, who welcomed his first foals recently, is one of the speediest horses coming from the male line of perennial Champion Sire Galileo.

A tough and consistent two-year-old, Havana Grey ran eight times as a juvenile and was only once out of the first two. He won four of them, of which three were at Stakes level, including the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes, and he was placed in three others, notably the Gr.1 Prix Morny and Gr.2 Flying Childers Stakes. At three, he won the 5f Gr.2 Saphire Stakes at the Curragh and his crowning moment came when he claimed the Gr.1 Flying Five Stakes over the same course and distance two months later.

By Havana Gold, he was bred by Mickley Stud and Lady Lonsdale, out of the six-time winning Dark Angel mare Blanc De Chine, whose half-sister Fast Act (Fast Company) was second in the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes. Havana Grey’s third dam, the unraced Bloudan (Damascus), is a half-sister to the great Al Bahathri (Blushing Groom), winner of the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas, thus this is the family of Gr.1 and Classic winners Haafhd, Big Orange, Red Cadeaux, Lord Shanakill, Together Forever and Forever Together amongst others.

CHAPEL STUD • Fee £3,000 1st Oct LFFR

Earnings by progeny of Hellvelyn are fast approaching £1.5m and, like their sire, they are soon into their strides as juveniles. His star to date has been Mrs Danvers, whose unbeaten juvenile season included wins in the Gr.3 Cornwallis Stakes and Weatherbys Super Sprint. His previous crop had included La Rioja, successful in the Gr.3 Dick Poole Fillies’ Stakes at two and placed in three Group sprints at three. Ardenode was a Gr.3-placed Listed scorer at two before moving to Hong Kong and Bonnie Grey was a Gr.3 runner-up at two, though Hells Babe bucked the trend when Gr.3-placed in Ireland last summer at the age of six.

Hellvelyn was a fast two-year-old, who won his first three starts, including the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes. He was then second in the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes and fourth in the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes to round out his juvenile season, before beating the dual Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes winner Borderlescott in the Listed Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes at three.

A 100,000gns sales yearling purchase, he is out of the Petong mare Cumbrian Melody, who won twice at two and is the producer of four black-type performers. She is also the second dam of black-type winners On Call Now and Hucking Hot. The Gr.3-winning sprinter and sire Savahra Sound is one of several Stakes winners under the Listed-placed second dam.

Exceed And Excel – Accessories (Singspiel)GESTUT FAHRHOF • Fee €8,000 1st Oct LF

GROUP 2 WINNER OVER 6F

A GROUP WINNER AT 2, 3 AND 4

NEW FOR 2020

Invincible Spirit – Rajeem (Diktat)YEOMANSTOWN STUD • Fee €10,000

Invincible Army proved his class and tenacity when recording Group successes in each of his three seasons.

Runner-up to subsequent Gr.1 Derby victor Masar by a short head on his debut, Invincible Army was quick to break his maiden next time, hacking up by five lengths in June of his two-year-old season. A high-class juvenile, he progressed to be runner-up in both the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes and Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes, before recording his first Group victory in the Gr.3 Sirenia Stakes. He rounded off the season with a fine second to James Garfield in the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes and returned at three to defeat the subsequent Gr.1 winner Eqtidaar in the Gr.3 Pavilion Stakes. Also second by the narrowest margin in the Gr.2 Sandy Lane Stakes at three, he resumed winning ways at four with success in the Gr.2 Duke of York Stakes, Gr.3 Chipchase Stakes and the Listed Cammidge Trophy, as well as being Gr.1-placed in the Flying Five Stakes, when he had Gr.1 performers Mabs Cross and Soldier’s Call in arrears.

By the champion sire and sire of sires Invincible Spirit, Invincible Army is out of the Gr.1 Falmouth Stakes heroine Rajeem (Diktat), a half-sister to the unraced dam of last year’s Gr.3 Fred Darling Stakes winner Dandhu (Dandy Man), out of a full-sister to the Gr.1 Prix Morny winner Hoh Magic (Cadeaux Genereux).

A close third in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes on only his second start, the son of Exceed And Excel broke his maiden next time out by six lengths. Beaten a nose in the Gr.3 Acomb Stakes, he took the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes next time out in record time. He returned at three to defeat the subsequent Gr.1 winner Expert Eye in the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes. His pedigree includes two leading sires in Invincible Spirit and Kodiac, both of whom are under his third dam Eljazzi, as well as fellow second-year sire Gustav Klimt. MAHSOOBDansili – Mooakada (Montjeu)

HEDGEHOLME STUD • Fee £1,200 1st Oct

The oldest crop of Mahsoob are now yearlings, as their sire embarks on his third season at Hedgeholme Stud.

The Shadwell-bred son of Dansili was trained by John Gosden and won five of his nine starts over three seasons. He was successful on his only start at two, winning over 1m at Kempton, and followed up in handicaps at Newbury and York before justifying favouritism when beating 12 rivals in the Listed Wolferton Handicap over 1m2f at Royal Ascot, defeating the Stakes winner Sennockian Star. The following season, his biggest win came in the Gr.3 Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket, when his defeated opponents included multiple Group winners Air Pilot, Tullius, Custom Cut and Sovereign Debt. His wins came over trips of a mile to an extended 1m2f, on turf rated from good to firm to good to soft, and on the all-weather, demonstrating his versatility.

A son of the Listed-placed Montjeu mare Mooakada, he descends from Shadwell’s Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and Classic winner Shadayid (Shadeed) via her Classic-placed, Gr.3-winning daughter Bint Shadayid (Nashwan). This is also the family of Group winners and sires Dumaani and Fath, both sons of the Gr.1-winning two-year-old and Classic-placed Desirable (Lord Gayle).

MARKAZDark Angel – Folga (Atraf)

DERRINSTOWN STUD • Fee €5,000 1st Jan SLF

The first yearlings by Markaz from an initial book of 108 mares – 94 per cent of them winners or dams of winners – realised up to 62,000gns at last year’s sales.

The grey won at Ascot as a two-year-old and was runner-up in the Gr.3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes, before going on to win the Gr.3 Criterion Stakes at three and the Gr.3 Chipchase Stakes at four, and was perhaps unlucky not to land Germany’s top sprint, the Gr.2 Goldene Peitsche, after being bumped at the start and beaten less than a length. He finished in the first four a further 10 times, including when second in the Gr.2 Park Stakes (behind dual Gr.1 winner Limato) and third in two Listed contests.

He was jointly bred by Yeomanstown Stud, who bred and stand his sire Dark Angel. The latter is sire of seven Gr.1 winners to date, including Champions Harry Angel and Battaash and Markaz’s full-sister, the Champion Older Srinter and dual Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes victrix Mecca’s Angel, who has a yearling filly by Galileo. Their dam is the six-time victress and Listed runner-up Folga (Atraf) and their grandam Desert Dawn was a Gr.3 winner in France at two before also producing the French Listed-winning miler Desert Kaya.

CHEVELEY PARK STUD • Fee £5,000 1st Oct SLF

The Gr.1 July Cup winner Mayson has sired 19 black-type horses from his first four crops, 22 per cent of last year’s runners were rated 85 or higher and his yearlings are providing an impressive return, selling for up to 100,000gns in 2019. His progeny includes the twice Group-placed Listed winner Global Applause (also a Listed winner at four), the dual Listed winner and dual Gr.3-placed Dance Diva, French Listed scorer Private Matter, Ascot Listed winner Raydiance and Doncaster Listed victrix Rose Briar. His biggest earners to date include the Japanese Gr.2-placed Mayson Junior, the Gr.1-placed True Mayson and the dual Gr.3 runner-up Laugh A Minute.

The son of Invincible Spirit was a Listed runner-up and fourth in the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes at two and, at four, won the Listed (then) Abernant Stakes and Gr.3 Palace House Stakes. Later that summer, he defeated 11 rivals, including Gr.1 winners Society Rock and Ortensia, in the July Cup. He rounded off his racing career with a neck second in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye, when giving away weight to the winner.

Mayson is out of an unraced Pivotal half-sister to the Listed-winning juvenile Bathwick Bear and from the close family of the Gr.1-winning mother and daughter Singhalese and Sinhalite.

Sea The Stars – Aiglonne (Silver Hawk)HARAS DE BOUQUETOT • Fee €4,000 LF

The Gr.1 winner Mekhtaal, who welcomes his first foals this year, proved himself a teak-tough campaigner from three to five, recording Group victories from 1m1f to 1m2f.

Unraced at two, the son of Sea The Stars got off to a winning start at three, recording an easy victory over 2000m at Saint-Cloud. Pitched into Group company on only his third start, just two months later, he hacked up by six lengths in the Gr.2 Prix Hocquart, making all for a comfortable victory, and went on to finish a close runner-up in the Gr.3 Prix du Prince d’Orange. At four, he returned with a fine second in the Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt, fighting out a close finish with the future Gr.1 winner Cloth Of Stars and then gained his top-level success in the Gr.1 Prix d’Ispahan over a high-class field, with Gr.1 winners Robin Of Navan and Zarak among those beaten. Sent to race in the US, he was runner-up in the Gr.2 Nijinsky Stakes over 1m4f at Woodbine and finished his career with a close second in the Gr.1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes over the same course and distance.

Out of the Gr.3 winner Aiglonne (Silver Hawk), Mekhtaal is a three-parts-brother to Aigue Marine (Galileo), a dual Gr.3 winner in the US and a Listed winner in France, and a half-brother to the Gr.2 Prix Hocquart winner Democrate (Dalakhani), from the family of Gr.1 winners Germance, White Muzzle and Almutawakel.

STANDING AT ELWICK STUD

Sehrezad – Muriel (Fath)GESTUT ROTTGEN • Fee €3,000 1st Oct

The first foals are now due by the classy sprinter-miler Millowitsch. A winner on debut at two, he won three of his four starts as a juvenile, finishing third in Gr.3 company on his only other outing. He returned at three to land the Gr.3 Dr Busch Memorial over 1700m and finished fourth in the Gr.2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen on his only other start that season. He resumed winning ways at four in a Listed contest over 1600m and added two further Gr.3 victories to his tally that season, over 1200m and 1700m respectively. At five, he triumphed in a further pair of Gr.3 races, winning over 1600m at Dusseldorf on his seasonal debut and also claiming the Silberne Peitsche at Baden-Baden over 1200m. In addition to his victories, he was also placed in Group company on a further five occasions from 1200m to 1600m.

Much the best son of few foals by his triple Group-winning sire Sehrezad (Titus Livius), he is a half-brother to the Gr.3-placed Ming Jung (Kallisto) and the Listed-placed Maha Kumari (Soldier Hollow). Their dam, the Fath mare Muriel, was a smart performer in a light career, finishing placed in the Gr.3 Silberne Peitsche and in Listed company, as well as winning at two over 1200m. She is a half-sister to Gifted Girl (Azamour), a Listed winner who was Gr.1-placed in the Beverly D Stakes in the US. Their unraced dam is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Irish Oaks heroine Margarula (Doyoun).

MILLOWITSCHGalileo – Occupandiste (Kaldoun)

ELWICK STUD • Fee £6,000

The oldest crop of Mondialiste (Galileo) met with strong approval as foals last year, selling for up to 60,000gns, and he covered another good book of 65 mares in 2019.

He embodies both class and longevity, having been a globe-trotting Stakes performer from three to seven years old. Unraced at two, he was placed on his first three starts in maiden company, before being pitched straight into Gr.1 level in the Prix Jean Prat, finishing a good third. At four, he earned further black type when Listed-placed before finally breaking his maiden at Saint-Cloud. He changed hands at the Arqana Summer Sale, moving from Freddy Head to David O’Meara, and was not seen again until his head second in the Lincoln Handicap. He went on to be Gr.3-placed before winning his first black-type with a ten-length success in Listed company and added the Gr.3 Strensall Stakes to his cv, prior to earning Gr.1 glory in the Woodbine Mile. He earned another Gr.1 victory at six in the Arlington Million, while at seven, he was beaten only a nose in the Gr.2 York Stakes.

Boasting an impeccable pedigree, he is half-brother to the Gr.2 winner Impressionnante (Danehill), dam of Gr.1 winner and sire Intello, out of the dual Gr.1 winner Occupandiste (Kaldoun). This is the Elle Seule/Elnadim/Mehthaaf/Ribchester branch of the outstanding Fall Aspen family.

MUKHADRAMShamardal – Magic Tree (Timber Country)

NUNNERY STUD • Fee £6,000 1st Jan SLF

Mukhadram made a good start to his stud career with his first juveniles and enjoyed even stronger results last year with his first three-year-olds, siring 39 individual winners, headed by A Bit Special, who landed the Gr.3 Sweetest Chant Stakes in the US, having been a Listed winner in the US at two. He was represented by more Stakes-winning juveniles last season as well, when his second-crop daughter Romsey landed a Listed victory in Germany and was Gr.2-placed in Italy, and Caballero Chopper was twice Listed-placed in Italy as a juvenile.

Mukhadram did not run at two himself, but won his second start at three in May over 1m – he was later promoted to first in the Wood Ditton Stakes, run the month before – and made his Stakes breakthrough on his seasonal debut at four, scoring in the Gr.3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes over 1m2f. Pitched into top-level company next time out, he went down by only a neck to Al Kazeem in the Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, with top performers The Fugue and Camelot in arrears, and was third in the Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes before triumphing in the Gr.2 York Stakes over an extended 1m2f. At five, his biggest success came with a two-length victory in the Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes and he was twice Gr.1-placed.

His Timber Country dam is a half-sister to the multiple Gr.1 and Classic winner Mastery and Gr.1 winner Kirklees.

Invincible Spirit – Angel Falls (Kingmambo)IRISH NATIONAL STUD • Fee €8,000 1st Oct

France’s Champion Two-Year-Old of 2016 National Defense, who stands alongside his leading sire Invincible Spirit at the Irish National Stud, will see his first yearlings go through the sales ring later this year.

A debut six-length winner at Deauville in the August of his juvenile season, he was then third in the Gr.3 Prix de la Rochette before taking the Gr.1 Prix Jean Luc Lagerdere easily by four and a half lengths.

National Defense, a €280,000 yearling, comes from an established family. A half-brother to the Stakes-placed Cascading (Teofilo) and Nordic Defense (Makfi), he is out of a Kingmambo half-sister to the Gr.3 Prix de la Grotte winner and Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up Anna Salai (Dubawi), as well as a pair of Listed winners and Group performers in Advice (Seeking The Gold) and Iguazu Falls (Pivotal). The second dam, Anna Palariva (Caerleon), was a Gr.3 winner in France, while the third, Anna Of Saxony (Ela-Mana-Mou), also scored at that grade and is a half-sister to Accessories (Singspiel), dam of the Gr.1-winning sires Epaulette and Helmet. This is the famous and current family of a pair of Champions in Germany. Anna Paola, winner of the Gr.2 (then) Preis der Diana, was a Champion at two and three, while Anna Monda, an Italian Gr.1 winner, was a Champion Three-Year-Old in her native land.

HARAS DE BOUQUETOT • Fee €10,000 LF

Olympic Glory celebrated his first Gr.1 winner last year with his first crop of three-year-olds when Watch Me triumphed in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, while Grand Glory just missed out on Classic glory when third in the Gr.1 Prix de Diane. He also sired Listed winners Phoceene, who was also Gr.3-placed, and Lucky Lycra, while other black-type performers included Olympic Games and Got Wind. He also enjoyed a good year in the sales ring, topped by a half-sister to the Gr.1 performer Fleeting, who was purchased for €400,000 at the Arqana August Yearling Sale.

Olympic Glory was himself a top-class juvenile who developed into a classy miler. An easy winner on his debut at two, he was runner-up in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes and enjoyed his first Group victory in the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes. He went on to land the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes before recording an easy victory in the Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. At three, he won the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes and was runner-up in both the Gr.1 Prix Jacques le Marois and the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin, before adding a second top-level victory to his cv in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. At four, he triumphed twice more in Gr.1 company, in the Lockinge Stakes and Prix de la Foret.

A son of the sire influence Choisir, he is out of the Alzao mare Acidanthera, a granddaughter of the flying filly Amaranda (Bold Lad).

PASTORAL PURSUITSBahamian Bounty – Star (Most Welcome)

NORTON COURT STUD • Fee £2,000

Pastoral Pursuits has carved out a solid reputation at stud as a consistent source of speedy types, plenty of whom have inherited a touch of their sire’s class. Heading his leading performers last year was the precocious colt Ventura Rebel, who was beaten a neck by the high-class juvenile A’Ali in the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes. That colt is one of 33 lifetime black-type performers for their sire, whose Group winners also include such as Pastoral Player and Rose Blossom and whose leading juveniles include the Royal Ascot winner Marine Commando.

Pastoral Pursuits was himself a quality juvenile performer, running up a sequence of three victories over 6f culminating in the Gr.3 Sirenia Stakes. He did not return until June of his three-year-old season, finishing runner-up in Listed company before winning the Listed (then) Hackwood Stakes over 6f at Newbury. Stepped up to 7f, he landed the Gr.2 Park Stakes, but even better was to come the following season when he dropped back in trip again to triumph in the Gr.1 July Cup by a length and a half.

He is a full-brother to another Gr.1-winning sprinter in the Haydock Sprint Cup victor Goodricke, who also finished second in the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, and is a half-brother to the unraced dam of the Group winners Desert Stone and Euginio and Listed winner Handassa.

CHAPEL STUD • Fee £4,000 1st Oct

The striking Pearl Secret will have his first runners this spring, that initial crop having been sold for up to £55,000 (filly bought by Henry Candy) and 50,000gns (colt from the family of the dual Classic-placed Border Arrow purchased by Longways Stables) as yearlings, with an average of more than four times his covering fee.

Pearl Secret was a talented sprinter, scoring on his only start at two, and graduating to win the Listed Scurry Stakes as a three-year-old. Intermittent injury problems held up his progress at various points, but this did not stop him having a long career at the highest level. He was third in the Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes as a four-year-old (behind five-time Gr.1 winner Sole Power and triple Gr.1 winner Shea Shea), and won the Gr.2 Temple Stakes at six. In total, he was a seven-time winner, earner of more than £240,000 and Timeform rated him 119.

His dam Our Little Secret (Rossini) won the Listed City Wall Stakes and has foaled five winners. The third dam Pasadena Lady (Captain James) was responsible for the prolific trio Palacegate Episode, Palacegate Jack and Another Episode, multiple Stakes winners of 37 races between them, and this is also the family of Gr.1-winning two-year-old and leading sire Dutch Art (Medicean). Interestingly, Pearl Secret has no Northern Dancer blood in the first four generations.

Second in the Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic on his first start at five, he ran up a sequence of Group wins starting with the Gr.3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes, before hitting Gr.1 glory in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, defeating Cracksman and Hawkbill. Stepped up to 1m4f for the Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, he added a second top-level triumph to his cv and was then second to Roaring Lion in the Gr.1 International Stakes, ahead of Saxon Warrior and Latrobe.

Pomellato’s racing career was brief, consisting of four runs at two – three of them wins, including the Gr.2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte and Gr.3 Zukunfts Rennen, and a fourth in the Gr.1 Gran Criterium. It looked as if his stallion career might be brief as well, but he was given a second chance, having been repatriated to Gestut Westerberg in 2015 before moving to France in 2017, where he covered 67 mares.

He sired about a dozen foals in his first crop, born in 2011, plus a crop of four in 2012, by which time he had been exported to Iran. That first tiny crop included six winners in France, headed by the ill-fated Another Party, who was placed in four Group and four Listed races, along with the multiple scorers Flavin (a Gr.3-winning chaser in 2016), Jazz Poem (a multiple Listed-placed hurdler), Kamellata (a Gr.2-placed Listed winner in Germany) and Paola Lisa (twice Listed-placed), plus the German Listed-placed Sovalla. His crops may be small to date but they have resulted in a strike rate of 81 per cent lifetime winners to runners.

By the Champion German sire and speed influence Big Shuffle, he is a half-brother to the Gr.3 St Leger Italiano winner Parivash and the Stakes-winning chaser Passato and a full-brother to the Listed-placed Pom Pom Pom. His dam won, while his grandam was a Gr.3 winner and third in the Gr.1 Prix de Diane, and is a half-sister to Listed victrix Fleur D’Oranger.

Postponed broke his maiden on his second start at two and progressed at three to be third in the Gr.3 Craven Stakes and the Gr.3 Tercentenary Stakes, before finishing the season with wins in both the Listed Glasgow Stakes and the Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes. His next two seasons saw him crowned as Champion Older Horse in England and then Europe as he triumphed in the Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Gr.2 Prix Foy at four. At five, he triumphed in the Gr.1 Juddmonte International Stakes, Gr.1 Coronation Cup and the Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic, and in his final season on the track he was placed in the Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic and Gr.2 Dubai City Of Gold from two starts, retiring with a Timeform rating of 130.

A winner and Gr.3 runner-up on his two starts at two, he was third and then first in two Listed Derby trials in the spring of 2013 before missing the rest of that season. At four, he returned with two Gr.2 wins in the summer and travelled to Australia in the autumn, finishing fourth in a Gr.2 over 2400m before his victory in the 3200m Gr.1 Melbourne Cup. He stayed down under in 2015, but did not fare so well and returned to Germany the next year, winning three in a row, including the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Berlin and Gr.2 Grosser Hansa-Preis, both over 2400m.

He has an interesting pedigree. Not only is he by the great Monsun, but is inbred to the Stakes-winning Le Haar mare Plencia on his distaff side. He is the best of the three winners out of his dam Patineuse, whose sire, the Champion Peintre Celebre, is a grandson of Plencia’s Gr.3-winning daughter Petroleuse. Patineuse herself, who shares her grandam with Champion Stayer Stradivarius, is a great-granddaughter of Plencia’s best produce, the dual Classic and Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes victrix Pawneese.

Protectionist has a first crop of 44 two-year-olds, who were born right across Europe and who realised up to €95,000 and €82,000 at last year’s BBAG September Yearling Sale.

Choisir – Bunditten (Soviet Star)THE NATIONAL STUD • Fee £5,000

Rajasinghe took up stallion duties last year at The National Stud and will have his first foals on the ground over the coming months. If they follow in the footsteps of their sire, breeders can expect their new arrivals to be precocious, early types with plenty of speed.

Rajasinghe made a winning debut in May of his two-year-old career, storming clear to win by four lengths in novice company at Newcastle. Just over a month later he ran the fastest time ever recorded for a two-year-old over 6f at Ascot to win the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes. Behind him that day were the subsequent multiple Gr.1 winner U S Navy Flag, the dual Gr.1-winning miler Romanised and the Gr.3 Horris Hill Stakes winner Nebo. Rajasinghe went on to be a good third in the Gr.2 July Stakes on his next start.

Choisir has enjoyed success as a sire of sires with such as Olympic Glory and Starspangledbanner. Rajasinghe is out of the Soviet Star mare Bunditten, also dam of the Listed-placed Kurland (Kheleyf) and herself a daughter of the Listed winner Felicita, from the family of the multiple Gr.2-winning Australian sprinter Super Cash and Batavian, a Gr.2 winner and Gr.1-placed in New Zealand. This is also the family of the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas winner Caergwrle.

RAJASINGHE RAVEN’S PASSElusive Quality – Ascutney (Lord At War)

KILDANGAN STUD • Fee €10,000 1st Oct SLF

Raven’s Pass is leading the way at 8.7 per cent for lifetime Stakes winners to runners for Irish stallions standing at €20,000 or less. The versatile sire added another Gr.1 feather to his cap with Japanese Gr.1-winning sprinter Tower Of London and has already sired the Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere victor Royal Marine.

The son of Elusive Quality represents value, having remained at the same fee for the third year in a row. He also enjoyed some fine results at the sales last year, with dual Listed-placed Interception changing hands for 200,000gns at the Tattersalls December Sale, and the German Gr.2 winner Raven’s Lady realising $300,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Raven’s Pass finished fourth on one occasion and was otherwise never out of the first three in 12 starts, from 7f-1m2f, including victories in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, the latter in record time. He was placed five times, four of them in Gr.1 company.

He is a half-brother to the Gr.3 victor Gigawatt and the dam of the Gr.1 victrix Castle Lady, out of the Gr.3 winner Ascutney. She is a half-sister to the Gr.1 winner No Matter What, dam of the Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Rainbow View, and the Gr.2-winning sire E Dubai.

MONTFORT & PREAUX • Fee €5,000 LF

Recorder has proved himself a popular addition to the French stallion ranks, covering a first book of 152 mares and following up with nearly 90 mares last year.

The young sire is from the successful cross of Galileo out of Danehill-line mares, which has produced the likes of Frankel, Australia, Intello, Teofilo, The Gurkha and Highland Reel. He is the first foal out of Memory (Danehill Dancer), who was a high-class juvenile, beating subsequent Gr.1 winners Margot Did and Hooray in the Gr.3 Albany Stakes and she defeated Hooray again in the Gr.2 Cherry Hinton Stakes. Her next two foals are the Gr.2 winner Call To Mind (also by Galileo) and last year’s Swedish Gr.3 winner Learn By Heart (Frankel). Memory is a half-sister to Gr.3 winner Remember Alexander (Teofilo), her dam is the Gr.3-placed Nausicaa (Diesis) and the third dam is Listed winner Blushing All Over (Blushing Groom).

An injury picked up at two meant racegoers almost certainly did not see the best of the Queen’s homebred chesnut. He had subsequent Gr.1 winner Ventura Storm back in third when winning a Newmarket maiden and went on to land York’s Gr.3 Acomb Stakes three weeks later; the third-placed Cymric was later beaten in a photo-finish for the Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

Dalakhani – On Fair Stage (Sadler’s Wells)HARAS D’ANNEBAULT • Fee €7,000 LF

The career of 2017 German Champion First Season Sire Reliable Man continues to go from strength to strength, following his relocation to Haras d’Annebault for the 2018 season. His shuttle career yielded two new Gr.1 winners last year, with Miami Bound taking the VRC Oaks, as well as a Gr.2, and Sentimental Miss striking in the New Zealand Oaks. The Classic-winning duo were among 14 black-type performers for the sire in 2019, headlined in Europe by the Gr.2 Diana Trial heroine Akribie, as well as a trio of performers placed at the highest level in both hemispheres.

Winner of his first three starts for Alain de Royer-Dupre, a maiden, conditions race and the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club, he won the Gr.2 Prix Niel later that season. Third in the Gr.1 Prix Ganay on his four-year-old debut, he moved to Australia later that year and into the care of Chris Waller, for whom he made two starts. Sixth first time, beaten under two lengths by Pierro in the 1500m Gr.1 George Ryder Stakes, he then landed the 2000m Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, beating the winners of 19 Gr.1 races.

The grey is of Classic breeding on both sides. By the four-time Gr.1 hero Dalakhani, he is a half-brother to the dual Gr.3 winner Imposing, out of a Stakes-winning Sadler’s Wells daughter of Fair Salina, winner of the Gr.1 Oaks, Gr.1 Irish Oaks and Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks.

RULER OF THE WORLDGalileo – Love Me True (Kingmambo)

HARAS DE BOUQUETOT • Fee €6,000 LF

After five years at stud at Coolmore, the Gr.1 Derby victor Ruler Of The World relocates to France, joining the roster at Haras de Bouquetot.

The son of Galileo suffered a hock injury in his first season at stud which limited his book, but he still got his stud career off to the best possible start when siring the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile heroine Iridessa in his first crop. That filly added further lustre to her record last season, triumphing in the Gr.1 Pretty Polly Stakes and Gr.1 Matron Stakes, before rounding off her season in style with victory in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita.

Ruler Of The World was unraced at two but made a swift impact at three, winning his debut at the Curragh in March over 1m2f and trouncing the opposition by six lengths in the Gr.3 Chester Vase next time out. The Gr.1 Derby provided him with a third victory from as many starts, and he went on to be runner-up in the Gr.2 Prix Niel and third in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes. At four, he added a further Group success to his tally in the Gr.2 Prix Foy.

He has a fine stallion’s pedigree, being a half-brother to the top-class middle distance performer and sire Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill) and the Gr.2 winner Annus Mirabilis (Montjeu), as well as being a full-brother to the Gr.3 victor and Gr.1-placed Norway and Gr.1-placed Giovanni Canaletto.

SADDEXSadler’s Wells – Remote Romance (Irish River)

BLACKRATH STUD • Fee €2,000

Saddex spent his first four years at stud in Germany before moving to France for the 2014 season. He had three different homes there over five years and, after changing hands at last December’s Arqana Sale, has now moved to Ireland, where he will stand alongside Chacun Pour Soi’s sire Policy Maker and the Gr.1-placed Eliot at Blackrath Stud in Co Kildare.

He won seven of his 15 starts over four seasons, from 1700m on his three-year-old seasonal debut to 2400m. A dual Listed winner and fourth in the Gr.1 Deutsches Derby at three, he landed two Gr.2 races and then the Gr.1 Rheinland Pokal at four and was a top-flight winner again at five over 2000m in Italy. He was placed in two other Gr.1 events, including a half-length second in the Gr.1 Prix Ganay.

A son of the late, great Sadler’s Wells, he is a full-brother to the dam of the dual New Zealand Gr.1 winner Lizzie L’Amour and his grandam, Gr.1 winner Aviance (Northfields), is the dam of Gr.1 winners Chimes Of Freedom and Denon and grandam of three more.

The best of his runners on the Flat have been Pas De Deux, a Group winner five times from 1600m to 2000m, and the 1600m Listed winner Bastille. Over jumps, he has sired the Gr.3-winning hurdler and Gr.1 runner-up Sancta Simona, the Gr.3-placed hurdler Impala Du Rheu and March’s Cheltenham Festival Gr.1 Champion bumper runner-up Blue Sari.

SEABHACScat Daddy – Curlin Hawk (Curlin)

HARAS DE SAINT ARNOULT • Fee €5,000 LF

Seabhac was another new stallion to Haras de Saint Arnoult last year, where he covered a first book of around 80 mares.

The son of Scat Daddy was a $170,000 purchase from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale and was trained in the US by Todd Pletcher. He ran three times at two, winning the Gr.3 Pilgrim Stakes over an extended mile on turf at Belmont Park and finishing fourth behind the subsequent dual Gr.1 winner Catholic Boy in the Gr.3 With Anticipation Stakes.

He is the first foal out of a once-raced Curlin half-sister to the dual US Classic winner and sire Afleet Alex and Stakes winner Unforgettable Max (both by Northern Afleet) and to a Stakes-placed daughter of Storm Cat. His winning grandam is also the second dam of Stakes winners Cash’s Girl and Topic, while his third dam is the US Gr.1 victrix Qualique (Hawaii), who became the grandam of five other Stakes winners.

Scat Daddy was a Gr.1 winner at two and three and had made a terrific start to his stallion career before dying at just 11. His Northern Hemisphere runners include the lightning-fast pair Caravaggio and Lady Aurelia, the leading sire No Nay Never, the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Mendelssohn and the unbeaten US Triple Crown hero Justify.

SIR PERCYMark Of Esteem – Percy’s Lass (Blakeney)

LANWADES STUD • Fee £7,000 1st Oct SLF

Sir Percy continues as a stalwart of the stallion ranks, siring a string of high-class horses, with 47 flat Stakes performers on his cv to date, including Gr.1 winners Sir John Hawkwood and Wake Forest.

In 2019, Sir Percy’s leading performers included January’s Gr.3 Astra Stakes winner Pantsonfire, while at the other end of the season, his daughter Flighty Lady was third in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac and the Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale. He was also represented by the Gr.2-placed stayer Cleonte and the Gr.3-placed juvenile Berkshire Rocco. As evidenced by such as Flighty Lady and Little Becky, Sir Percy also continues to be a good source of juvenile talent as well, with his tally of two-year-old winners at 80.

Sir Percy was top-class at both two and three. An unbeaten Champion Two-Year-Old, his triumphs included the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes, and the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes. He trained on to be runner-up in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas before winning the Gr.1 Derby. The son of Mark Of Esteem is a full-brother to the dam of the Gr.2 Dubai City Of Gold winner Mikhail Glinka and the Gr.1-winning hurdler Chicago. He hails from an enduring family that includes Gr.1/Classic winners Give Thanks, Teenoso, Aqaarid, Rule Of Law, Braiswick, Harayir, Old Country, Give Notice, Nicolotte, Imperial Dancer, Prince Bishop, Olympic Glory and Tryster.

NORMAN COURT STUD • Fee £6,000 1st Oct SLF

By a Classic winner in Galileo, out of a Classic winner in Love Divine (Diesis) and a Classic winner himself, Sixties Icon continues to advertise his versatility, quality and exceptional value.

The sire of Argentinian Gr.1 winners Sixties Song and Crazy Icon, his prowess as a sire was once again on show in 2019 when Nagano Gold, a 3,500gns Tattersalls December Foal Sale purchase, was desperately unlucky when just failing to reel in the Gr.1 Coronation Cup winner Defoe in the Gr.2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and Iconic Choice, the winner of the 7-furlong Listed Radley Stakes last year, was beaten under three lengths in the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas. As well as siring stayers like the York’s Ebor Handicap winner Nakeeta, he often gets many two-year-old winners and some can even be seen winning over the minimum trip. To date, he has sired 27 Stakes performers and eight Group winners worldwide at a strike rate of almost 60 per cent winners to runners.

Unraced at two, Sixties Icon won his second start at three before going on to take the Gr.3 Gordon Stakes and back it up in the Gr.1 St Leger, which was run at York due to the redevelopment of Doncaster. He raced on until five, winning the Gr.2 Jockey Club Stakes, Gr.3 Glorious Stakes, Gr.3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes and Gr.3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes.

Dutch Art – Girl Power (Key Of Luck)KILDANGAN STUD • Fee 7,500 Oct 1st SLF

Slade Power enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2019, when his leading progeny were headed by the top filly Raffle Prize. Winner of the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes, she added the Gr.2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes to her tally before finishing runner-up in both the Gr.1 Prix Morny, by only a neck, and the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes. His yearlings were therefore popular last autumn and were sold for up to 160,000gns.

Slade Power himself showed great improvement with age, but was still precocious enough to be second on debut in May at two and break his maiden in the same season. At three, he made his Stakes breakthrough when triumphing in the Listed (then) Sandy Lane Stakes as well as the Listed Belgrave Stakes. At four, he progressed throughout the season to win first the Gr.3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes and then the Gr.2 (then) British Champions Sprint Stakes and was also Gr.1-placed in the July Cup and the Haydock Sprint Cup. Better was to come at five, when he was crowned Champion Sprinter, claiming victory in both the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes and the Gr.1 July Cup, as well as the Gr.3 Greenlands Stakes.

A half-brother to two winners, the son of Dutch Art is out of the sprint winner Girl Power (Key Of Luck), a full-sister to the Stakes-placed Key Rose, from a smart black-type family that has done particularly well in the US.

Scat Daddy – Prairie Maiden (Badger Land)STARFIELD STUD • Fee €5,000 FFFR

Smooth Daddy began his stud career last year, covering over 70 mares. He combines his own tough and consistent record on the track with the draw of being a son of the late Scat Daddy, sire of such outstanding performers as Lady Aurelia, Caravaggio and No Nay Never, with the latter having made an excellent start to his own stud career.

Smooth Daddy raced over five seasons, running no fewer than 31 times and winning or being placed in 22 of his races on turf in the US. The highlight of his career came when winning the 1m1f Gr.3 Fort Marcy Stakes, in which he defeated Gr.1 performers Time Test and Messi, and he was also Gr.3-placed on three occasions over 1m1f.

Smooth Daddy was bred by Richard Lueck and is a half-brother to the triple Listed winner Prairie Charm (Silver Charm) and the Stakes-placed Virgin Voyage (Deputy Commander). They are out of the multiple Listed scorer Prairie Maiden, a daughter of the Gr.1 Flamingo Stakes winner Badger Land. Her own dam, the winner Will Patricia (Bellypha), is a half-sister to the dam of the Gr.3 Ballyogan Stakes winner and Gr.1 Sprint Cup-placed Catch The Blues (Bluebird), herself the grandam of the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes winner and sire Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy). Sogann is a new addition to the stallion ranks in 2020, becoming the first son of the Champion Frankel to stand in the north of England.

Although unraced, Sogann brings attractive credentials to stud, being a half-brother to the proven sire Dabirsim (Hat Trick). Winner of both the Gr.1 Prix Morny and Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, as well as the Gr.3 Prix de Cabourg, Dabirsim has enjoyed success at stud with the likes of the Gr.3 Albany Stakes winner Different League, who went on to be twice Gr.1-placed at two, and the Gr.3 Prix Imprudence winner Coeur De Beaute, who was only narrowly beaten when runner-up in the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.

Purchased for €550,000 at Arqana’s August Yearling Sale, Sogann is out of the Royal Academy mare Rumored, who also produced the US Stakes winner Preferred Yield (High Yield). She is a half-sister to the Italian Gr.3 winner Fathayer (Volponi), as well as to the dam of the US Gr.2 winner Nay Lady Nay (No Nay Never) and the 2019 Gr.2 Coventry Stakes winner Arizona (No Nay Never), also twice Gr.1-placed as a juvenile last year. Sommerabend made a strong start to his stud career, with his first-crop two-year-olds including the multiple winners Green View and Prince Hamlet, successful seven times between them, while his runners continued to notch up wins last year as three-year-olds.

Bred by Gestut Schlenderhan and from a good German family, Sommerabend won nine races over five seasons. The majority of his victories were between 1400m and 1600m, but his first win was over 2200m as a three-year-old at Baden-Baden. He did plenty of racing in France during the remainder of his career and three of his Group wins came in the Gr.3 Prix Edmond Blanc, Gr.2 Prix du Muguet and Gr.3 Prix de la Porte Maillot. He had also landed the Gr.2 Europa Meile at four and was placed six times at Pattern level, including when just two lengths behind the multiple Gr.1 winner Solow in the Gr.2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein.

His sire Shamardal enjoyed a remarkable season last year and his stallion sons, including Lope De Vega and Mukhadram, continue to impress. His Listed-winning Monsun dam has produced three other Stakes horses, including Gr.3 winner Sommertag. His grandam Shona (Windwurf) is the ancestress of such as Gr.1 scorers Sirius and Sanagas, and his third dam is the Classic-placed Listed winner Shantou (Charlottown).

SOMMERABEND SPANISH MOONEl Prado – Shining Bright (Rainbow Quest)HARAS D’ANNEBAULT • Fee €5,000 LF

The outstanding hurdler Laurina shone the spotlight on her sire Spanish Moon, but the son of El Prado is far from being a one-trick pony, with a host of other talented performers over obstacles maintaining his name in lights. Among his other talented runners are Fee Mano, winner of an AQPS Gr.1 last September, Dallas Des Pictons, placed in Gr.3 company over fences recently, the Gr.1-placed Dellyson, Gr.2 runners-up Crack Mome, Shanning, Ennza De From and Spanish One, the Listed bumper winner Daphne Du Clos and the Listed-placed Djazzman and Danse Avec Jersey.

Spanish Moon won six of his 16 races, including on his debut at two. He also landed three Listed races at four and the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, beating four Gr.1 winners, and the Gr.2 Prix Foy at five. He was also placed in the Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic, beaten a nose, and the Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase, beaten a short head, as well as finishing third in the Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic, beaten by a length.

He is by El Prado, a Gr.1-winning son of Sadler’s Wells who is also responsible for leading sires Medaglia D’Oro and Kitten’s Joy. He is a full-brother to the Gr.2 winner Spanish Sun and his dam, by Rainbow Quest, is a half-sister to Gr.2 winner Daring Miss and Gr.3 winner Apogee (dam of Group winners Dance Routine and Apsis and grandam of multiple Gr.1 winners Enable and Flintshire).

TAAREEFKitten’s Joy – Sacred Feather (Carson City)

HARAS DU MEZERAY • Fee €3,000 LF

Among those young sires welcoming their first foals this spring is Haras du Mezeray’s son of Kitten’s Joy, Taareef.

A $675,000 purchase by Shadwell at Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale, Taareef developed into a high-class miler in the care of Jean-Claude Rouget.

Unbeaten in both his starts at two, he progressed to win his first Group race in the Gr.2 Prix Daphnis over 1800m at three, adding the Gr.2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein to his tally on his final start of the season. He returned at four after a lengthy break to make a winning seasonal debut in the Gr.3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil over 1600m, beating the Gr.1 winner Zelzal, and went on to defeat the subsequent Gr.1 Prix Jacques le Marois victor Al Wukair in the Gr.3 Prix Messidor, again over 1600m. Runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin to Ribchester, he rounded off his season with a repeat victory in the Gr.2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein. Retired to Haras du Mezeray, he covered a select book of mares in 2019.

Out of the Stakes-placed Carson City mare Sacred Feather, Taareef is a half-brother to three winners in the US, while his dam is a half-sister to the US Gr.3 winners Marastani (Shahrastani) and Christine’s Outlaw (Wild Again), as well as the Stakes winners Crimson Classic (Sky Classic) and Foret Noire (Time For A Change), from the further family of the top-class performers Mutafaweq (Silver Hawk; sire) and Dimitrova (Swain).

Nayef – Al Ishq (Nureyev)DERRINSTOWN STUD • Fee €10,000 1st Jan SLF

Sire of four Gr.1 winners, Tamayuz continues to maintain healthy book sizes, in this his twelfth season at stud, and still offers value as his progeny sold for up to 100,000gns at the yearling sales last season.

Flying the flag for the chesnut son of Nayef last season was Shadwell’s Gr.1 Lockinge Stakes winner Mustashry, who also added a third Gr.2 string to his bow. Down under, Gallic Chieftain landed the Gr.2 Chairman’s Prize at Randwick before finishing runner-up in the Gr.1 Metropolitan at the same track, while Classic winner Precieuse won a US Gr.3.

Unbeaten at two Tamayuz won the Gr.3 Prix de Fontainebleau on seasonal debut at three, followed by wins in both the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat, beating Raven’s Pass by one and a half lengths, and the Gr.1 Prix Jacques Le Marois. He ended the season with a fourth in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

He is a half-brother to the Gr.3-placed Nuqoosh (Machiavellian) and the Listed-placed pair Ettisaal (Dubawi) and Thamarat (Anabaa) (dam of Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club-placed Motamarris and grandam of triple Gr.3 winner Tantheem). TASLEET THE LAST LIONChoisir – Mala Mala (Brief Truce)

KILDANGAN STUD • Fee €7,500 1st Oct SLF

The first foals of The Last Lion (Choisir) will be racing this year, and, given how precocious their sire was, it will be no surprise to see his progeny running early and often. A half-brother to the high-class sprinter Soldier’s Call topped his yearling sales last year, selling for 170,000gns, while his progeny averaged over five times his stud fee.

Never out of the first three in his ten starts, The Last Lion retired with four victories on his cv. He made his own debut on the first day of the turf season as a two-year-old, winning the Brocklesby Stakes. He went on to finish second by half a length in the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes and then landed his first Stakes victory in the Listed Dragon Stakes. After a second in the Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes and a third in the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes, he landed his first Group race in the Gr.3 Sirenia Stakes. Tiberius Caesar – Toamasina (Marju)HARAS DE SAINT ARNOULT • Fee €2,200 LF

Tiberian is the ultimate rags to riches story, being a son of a teaser, who went on to scale the heights and take his owners on a global ride.

The son of the German Gr.3 winner Tiberius Caesar, who went on to serve as the teaser stallion at Haras du Logis, as well as covering a handful of mares on his own account, Tiberian proved himself a teak-tough campaigner over five seasons of racing.

Having broken his maiden over 3000m in August of his three-year-old season, he went on to be runner-up in the Gr.2 Prix Chaudenay two months later. At four, he failed by only a short neck to land the Gr.2 Prix du Conseil de Paris, while at five, he returned to action with two Stakes defeats of subsequent Gr.1 winner Talismanic, including in the Gr.3 Prix d’Hedouville, before adding the Gr.3 Prix de Reux and Gr.2 Grand Prix de Deauville to his tally, then contesting the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup, finishing seventh. At six and seven, he continued to contest Stakes races on a regular basis and retired with a record of six wins and ten places from 25 starts.

Tiberian is out of the Listed-placed winner Toamasina (Marju), a half-sister to the Stakes-placed Lady Weasley (Zieten) out of a winning half-sister to the Gr.1 Deutsches Derby victor All My Dreams (Assert), as well as the dam of the Gr.1 Beverly D Stakes heroine I’m A Dreamer (Noverre).

TIBERIAN TIME TESTDubawi – Passage Of Time (Dansili)

THE NATIONAL STUD • Fee £8,500

The first foals by the Gr.2 winner and Gr.1-placed Time Test found plenty of friends in the sales ring last year, with members of his first crop selling for up to 62,000gns and averaging nearly three times his fee of £8,500, a good return for breeders. Well supported, with around 100 mares in both of his books to date, he has attracted plenty of quality mares, with his first crop including half-brothers to last year’s Classic winners Logician and Star Catcher.

Time Test finished runner-up on his debut at two in July and swiftly followed up with a maiden victory. He progressed smoothly into Group company at three, winning the Gr.3 Tercentenary Stakes by over three lengths before triumphing in the Gr.2 Joel Stakes. He returned at four with victory in the Gr.3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes, finished third in the Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes and went on to land the Gr.2 York Stakes. Transferred to race in the US at five, he was twice runner-up in Gr.1 company on turf over 1m-1m2f.

By leading sire Dubawi, he hails from an excellent Juddmonte family. A full-brother to the multiple winner Time Chaser, he is out of the Gr.1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud heroine Passage Of Time (Dansili), a full-sister to the Gr.2 winner Father Time and the Listed winner Continuum, and a half-sister to the Gr.1 winner Timepiece (Zamindar), from the family of the Champion and Gr.1 sire Twice Over.

High Chaparral – Wana Doo (Grand Slam)HARAS DE BOUQUETOT • Fee €8,000 LF

Toronado’s oldest crop has just turned four and to date he is responsible for 14 black-type performers and has a strike rate of 43 per cent winners to runners. His year is off to a great start with a Listed 1-2 in Australia from his oldest Southern Hemisphere crop, while in the Northern Hemisphere his progeny are headed by last year’s Listed winner Stone Toronado, who was also Gr.3-placed, as well as a trio of other Listed winners.

By High Chaparral, he developed into a top-class miler at three and four, but had also been a high-class unbeaten juvenile. A winner on debut in June, he went on to win the Listed Winkfield Stakes and rounded off his season with victory in the Gr.2 Champagne Stakes. At three, he won the Gr.3 Craven Stakes by four lengths and was fourth in the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas before finishing second in the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes after a ding-dong battle with Dawn Approach. He turned the tables on that rival next time out in the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes. At four, he won on his seasonal debut in the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and then finished runner-up in both the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes and the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin, the latter by a head after another sustained fight.

His winning dam Wana Doo (Grand Slam) is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy victor and sire Casamento, out of the Listed winner Wedding Gift (Always Fair).

TORONADOKyllachy – Twilight Mistress (Bin Ajwad)

CHEVELEY PARK STUD • Fee £7,000 1st Oct SLF

Twilight Son, whose first crop of yearlings sold for up to 130,000gns last year, is bidding to follow in the successful stallion footsteps of his tail-male line, being the fourth generation to stand at Cheveley Park Stud, following on from Polar Falcon, Pivotal and his own sire Kyllachy.

All four are Gr.1-winning sprinters with Twilight Son twice tasting victory at that level. He won his first four starts at two and three, the last of them the handicap sprint at York that is often a springboard to Group success, which he achieved spectacularly when winning the Gr.1 Haydock Sprint. After that he only ran at Group level, coming second in the Gr.1 Champions Sprint later that autumn and taking the Gr.1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes on his second start the following year at four.

His sire Kyllachy and grandsire Pivotal both won the Nunthorpe Stakes and have been stalwarts in the British stallion ranks since, both on the course and in the sales ring. Twilight Son’s dam Twilight Mistress (Bin Ajwaad) won three times from 5f-7f and is also the dam of the Group-winning sprinter and sire Music Master (Piccolo) and the Listed winner Spring Fling (Assertive), from the family of Gr.3-winning sprinters Violette (Observatory), Hayloft (Tudor Melody) and On Tiptoes (Shareef Dancer), as well as Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas winner and sire Wassl (Mill Reef).

Waldpark got off the mark with his first two-year-olds in 2018 and it was no surprise that they showed improvement last year as three-year-olds, given that their sire did not himself run at two.

A wide-margin winner of his first two starts at three, he completed a hat-trick when winning the Listed Derby Trial and then beat 17 rivals in the Gr.1 Deutsches Derby. Regularly racing against the best from then on, he was placed in two Gr.2 races, including when beaten a head by Novellist, was fourth in the Gr.1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen, Gr.1 Preis von Europa and Gr.1 (then) Premio Roma, and ended his racing career with Anthony Freedman in Australia.

He is the best of the four Stakes horses out of the Acatenango mare Wurftaube, winner of four Group races and a Gr.1 runner-up. She is also the dam of Listed winner Waldvogel and the Gr.2-placed pair Waldjagd and Waldmark, the latter dam of the Gr.1 St Leger winner and young sire Masked Marvel and Gr.3 victrix Waldlerche, herself the dam of last year’s Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victor and new sire Waldgeist and the Gr.2 victrix Waldlied. Waldmark’s full-sister Waldbeere has produced multiple Group winner and sire Wiesenpfad, the twice Classic-placed Listed victrix Waldtraut, and the Gr.1 winner and last year’s Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Waldpfad.

BEARSTONE STUD • Fee £5,000 1st Oct SLF

The first foals by Washington DC, another hard-knocking speed merchant to stand at Bearstone Stud in Shropshire, are eagerly anticipated in the coming weeks and months, having covered 67 mares in 2019.

Trained, like studmate Fountain Of Youth, by Aidan O’Brien, Washington DC was a fast and precocious horse, winning twice at two, including the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, and coming second to the European Champion Two-Year-Old Air Force Blue in the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes. He ran no less than 11 times at three, winning twice at Listed level and coming third in the Gr.1 Commonwealth Cup and second in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye later in the season. At four he won again at Listed level and also struck in the Gr.3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes. He raced on at five, finishing only a head behind Battaash when second in the Gr.2 Temple Stakes.

He is out of the Listed Land O’Burns Stakes-placed How’s She Cuttin’, who is by a son of Green Desert in Shinko Forest. Further back, this is the family of the European Champion Two-Year-Old and Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes winner and sire Grand Lodge (Chief’s Crown) and the Australian Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and dual Gr.1 winner English (Encosta De Lago).

The oldest crop of Zelzal have just turned yearlings. A €180,000 yearling purchase, the son of Sea The Stars did

not race at two, but made a very easy winning debut in March as a three-year-old, scoring by six lengths over 1500m in maiden company at Deauville, and then won a Chantilly conditions contest over 1600m by four lengths. Highly-regarded enough to make his third start in the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains, though he finished unplaced, he won his first Group contest in the Gr.3 Prix Paul de Moussac. A month later, he triumphed in the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat by two lengths, defeating seven Group winners, among them the multiple black-type scorer Stormy Antarctic. Third on his final start of the season in the Gr.1 Prix du Moulin, he returned at four to be runner-up in the Gr.3 Prix Betrand du Breuil on his seasonal debut.

He is a half-brother to the Gr.3 Prix Chloe winner Ibiza (Redoute’s Choice), out of a winning daughter of Kingmambo, who is a half-sister to two Stakes producers. This is also the top-class family stemming from Crystal Spray, dam of Zelzal’s third dam State Crystal, who was a Gr.2 winner and Gr.1-placed, while other members of the further family include the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile heroine and Classic-placed Crystal Music, the Gr.2 winner Dubai Success, Gr.2 winner and sire Ocovango and Gr.2 winner Space Traveller.
