INTRODUCTION The E.S.College of Engineering & Technology was established in Villupuram in Tamil Nadu, in 2007 by the management of E.S. group of institutions with the approval of the Government of Tamil Nadu and All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi and affiliation to Anna University Chennai. The management has an excellent track record for more than 28 years in running schools, colleges of arts, science, e n g i n e e r i n g , t e c h n o l o g y, animation, polytechnic and nursing and a hospital at very high standards. The sponsoring Trust, E.S.S.M Educational and Charitable Trust was registered under the Tamil Nadu Trust Act, 1975 and is being run under the leadership of its Managing Trustee, Er.S.Selvamani.

It is my privilege to write a few words about E.S College of Engineering and Technology in my capacity as its founder-chairman. The College is a constituent unit of the group of educational institutions, which has 28 years of good standing in providing quality education in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu. TRAINING AND PLACEMENT SERVICES A Training and Placement Cell functions in the college, with one full-time Training and Placement Officer, assisted by a Training Officer and a Placement Officer. The Training & Placement Office provides career guidance and training to the students on soft-skills to make them job-ready. The T & P Cell works closely with industries to bring in frequent and effective interfaces between the potential employers and students. It organizes corporate briefing, employer receptions and annual Career Fairs. It also provides information on full-time and part-time job opportunities, internships and summer placements and conducts Career Development workshops, Mock Interviews and GD Sessions and other placement oriented activities. The Cell has a Career information centre and counseling unit. The data base in the centre is updated constantly with the names and addresses of potential employers in India and abroad. LIBRARY The library has a collection of over 18,000 volumes as against 12,000 required by the University and AICTE and a good number of national international journals. The library is an institutional member of many libraries and has libnet facility. The library is spacious, well-lit and modern with an excellent ambience. A Digital Library functions within the main Library with an excellent collection of CDs and computers, internet and other facilities. There is a good collection of educational audio and video tapes. A Reprographics Section functions within the Library for the benefit of staff students. The library is open from 8.30 am to 7.30 pm daily on all working days and from 10.00 am to 1.30 pm on Sundays during the first half of the semesters and it works for extended hours during the second half of the semesters. A mini library as an extension of the main library functions in each of the hostels for the benefit of the inmates during any time of the day and night, under the control of the Resident Tutor. Guidance and Counseling Services The Career Guidance and Counseling is largely the responsibility of the Training & Placement Cell. However the Faculty Advisors and individual staff members counsel the students on academic and disciplinary matters regularly and the college engages a psychologist who visits the college to sort out psychology related matters. Teaching and Research ESCET encourages the teachers to be innovative in teaching and experimentation and adaptation of new techniques & strategies. TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESSES Academic Calendar: The Academic Calendar is drawn giving details of the annual academic planning, teaching and nonteaching, guest/ visiting faculty, seminars & conferences planned, the number of working days, schedules of examinations, semester and other holidays / vacation periods, re-opening dates, closing dates, projects duration, evaluation schemes and probable dates of annual examinations, co-curricular & extra- curricular activities including annual functions, and details on other matters relating to academic administration. The copies of Academic Calendars are available to all students and staff in the beginning of the academic year. The details are also posted in the College website. Teaching Plan & Implementation: Lesson Plan is prepared by every teaching staff in respective of papers handled by him/her. The LP becomes the basis for teaching and the schedule is adhered to strictly by the concerned staff. Teachers deliver lessons with the help of OHP, LCD presentation and Computers to support Internet enabled teaching. Apart from this, other teaching tools like, Chart, Models, film strips are also made use of in the class rooms for effective teaching. A proper monitoring system through the share point server is developed and deployed under the supervision of the coordinator of Internal Quality Audit Cell.

SHARE-POINT PROJECT The entire operations in the college are managed by a unique project using Share Point server and software. The on-going project covers all aspects of teaching and learning management, general and financial administration, testing& evaluation, question bank, monitoring of student progress, student personnel management, information management with utmost transparency. The operations are manned by a team of qualified and dedicated staff.

Project-based learning: Groups of students are assigned live-wire projects related to academic and related non-academic topics. They are guided and supported by the teachers and they are advised to submit the project within two weeks to three months time depending on the type of projects undertaken. The Groups will present the projects in the class room before their classmates and teachers. The best project is rewarded suitably. Each Class Group has to undertake minimum one project in a semester. English Language Communication Laboratory The English Language Laboratory was set up to help students become skillful and confident in oral and written communications, through an interactive method. Open to all students, the laboratory offers one-on-one training in English communication and writing skills by appointment or on a drop-in basis. During training, students and consultants work together on various aspects of oral communication and writing: thesis development, outlining, paraphrasing, vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, structure and mechanics of writing etc.. Students can use the writing workshops to work on their drafts, do research or to work with a consultant on particular aspect of their writing. The writing workshops are organized on a variety of topics throughout the academic year. Audio Visuals & Computer-Assisted Learning The teachers use LCD projectors and OHP, depending on the nature of the topic taught. Multimedia is deployed for practice oriented subjects. A good collection of CDs on the subjects of learning are available for students in the library and students borrow them for home learning. The College has an Audio Visual Lab (Multi-media Laboratory) and a state- of- the- art theatre for the use of teachers in their preparation of teaching materials in media format with the help of experts in Vis Com. Tools like Charts, Original materials (hard ware), Models and Sample materials are also used in the class rooms to make the teaching effective and pleasant. Experiential Learning (Industrial Visits & Educational Tours): As part of curriculum, the departments organize Industrial Visits & Educational Tours to give students a better exposure to industrial processes and practices. Seminars: Every year all the departments organize State, National and International level seminars inviting experts from outside in addition to a number of departmental

seminars by students and professional associations. Papers are presented by group of students in the seminars. The Class Groups are also encouraged to take seminars on topics related to curriculum as part of classroom activity. Peer Team (Students) Teaching is practiced in many of the departments. A few fast learners are identified in every department and trained to handle class in the presence of a teacher. The students in the class are divided into Class Groups having five to seven members to promote group learning and group seminars related to academics. Class Groups are advised to take up group projects and assignments to promote group learning. Internet: The campus has completely networked and interconnected. The Internet use is free and unlimited for the staff and students. Teachers make use of Educational Portals and web sites for teaching, research, projects & learning. Library Advisory Committee and Faculty in charge of Library: There is a Library Advisory Committee and a Faculty in charge of Library to effectively guide the Librarians in their work. They review library utilization by staff and students, maintain the Central library and recommend library budget, purchase of books, and journals, arrange for annual stock verification, reviews the functioning of the library, arrange for Book Exhibitions in the campus. External & Internal Communications

The responsibility for information and communication technology is divided between the departments, faculties and the IT department. The IT department provides services (including assistance in acquiring IT skills) and information, in a user-friendly manner. In ESCET there shall be in place a system for the diligent assurance of quality in this important support facility. Faculty Advisor To help the students in planning their courses of study and for general advice on the academic programme, the Heads of the Department attach a certain number of students to a teacher of the Department who shall function as Faculty Advisor for those students throughout their period of study. Such Faculty Advisor shall advise the students and monitor the courses undergone by the students, check the attendance and progress of the students attached to him/her and counsel them periodically. If necessary, the faculty advisor may also discuss with or inform the parents about the progress of the students. Sports and Games The ESCET realize that the physical fitness of the students is the responsibility of the Colleges and physical training to the students is as important as any other activity. The old saying 'Healthy Mind in Healthy Body' is no exaggeration and thus the College believes that healthy mind is a pre-requisite for creative learning. Students who won prizes and medals in the various events of sports and games are encouraged and rewarded suitably. Preference is given to candidates who have won prizes and medals in sports etc in admission to various courses. Physical Education

buses are operated in the morning and evening from and to central places in the city and the nearest towns at nominal fees to cover costs. All the public route buses from Chennai, Trichy, Puducherry and many other places pass through ESCET. Personality & Character Development All students shall enroll, on admission, in any one of the personality and character development programmes such as NCC / NSS / NSO / YRC and receive training to improve their life skills and social awareness. The training shall include classes on hygiene and health awareness and provide skills in first-aid and participation in activities of the Programmes of the National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, Youth Red Cross, Red Ribbon Club and similar programmes. Involvement of Faulty and Students in academic improvements A number of ad-hoc committees consisting of faculty members and student representatives are formed to discuss and recommend action to improve class room management, library administration, laboratory facilities and the academic standard of the College. The Committees meet as and when required to discuss the ways and means of improving the quality of teaching and learning and infrastructures. Staff and students are actively involved in institutional reforms, research, development and consultancy, industryinstitute interaction, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities materials, staff etc. Appraisal schemes like self-appraisal and student feedback are effectively deployed for performance improvements. Grievance Redressal Mechanism Two separate Grievances Committees one for teaching staff and non-teaching staff and the other for students are in place to deal with the grievances of the staff members and students. Each Committee consists of three members consisting of a senior faculty, a representative of the

The Physical Education Department Provides facilities for sports, games, and athletics for all students to keep them physically fit and mentally alert. The College has welllaid Cricket Ground, Volley Ball Court, Indoor and Out Door Games facilities and a gymkhana. It encourages students to participate in sports and games activities, participate in competitions in various programmes. The Physical Educations Department is headed by a qualified and experienced Physical Director. The College has a working arrangement with ES multispeciality hospitals, at 10 mts drive from the College for rendering health care and emergency treatment to the students / residents in the hostels. The rooms are comfortable, spacious well-appointed, and neatly furnished with common facilities such as television, indoor games, ISD, STD, washing machines, hot water, play grounds, recreation and reading rooms, mini library and gymnasia.
