ERN-LWEThe ERN-LWE is a European research network that focusses on learning to write effectively. The research programma focusses on four complementary areas:
- Early acquisition of writing skills - Improvements in written communication - Design of written documents - Technological advances in writing tools
The research network aims on bringing together European research teams that are already working on the topic of writing. The network is an open and active network sustained by regular scientific events , research meetings and junior researchers’s training.
The ERN-LWE network is supported by COST, the European Coorperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research.

The ERN-LWE research and innovation focusses on four areas:
Area 1: Early acquisition of writing skills
This area describes the acquisition of writing by pupils with or without learning difficulties in their mother tongue and second language. It analyses learning difficulties and teaching situations.
Area 2: Improvements in written communication
This area describes the development of different writting skills in two languages. It looks into the factors favouring the development of expertise, compares and designes specific and appropriate training situations.
Area 3: Design of written documents:
This area describes how professional writers manage their skills and knowledge. It is about improving documents’ communicative impact and models exptertise.
Area 4: Technological advances in writing tools:
This area develops and standardises technological tools for studying and fostering the writing process, and develops a database.

Area 1: Early acquisition of writing skills
First of all a small introduction to what it is that we focus on exactly. Our main objective is to understand
the acquisition and development of the linguistic units involved in written production.
This research is subdivided in three components:
- Spelling acquisition
- Difficulties in writing and their impact on composition.
- Genre acquisition
Tasks will consist in copying words or phrases, producing texts based on pictures, writing to dictation and producing unrestricted oral or written productions. Emphasis will be on interlingual comparisons and the subjects will be children with or without learning difficulties

Spelling acquisition
The first area of research focuses on spelling acquisition, this is then subdivided in three levels:
-Infralexical level
Children’s writing skills can be hampered by infra-lexical units (graphemic, syllabic and morphological). The role of these units is largely determined by the orthographic characteristics of each languages. French and Spanish are now used in this study, and other languages are expected to follow.
-Lexical level
The question asked here is whether the orthographic lexicons for reading input and writing output are the same? Experiments have shown that they can be dissociated in French. The objective here is on the one hand to extend this research to English and on the other to confirm this finding in children.

-Morphosyntactical level
Current models of written skill acquisition attach considerable importance to so-called written exposure. They suggest that the development of children’s lexical systems is reflected in their ability to implicitly extract statistical regularities from their linguistic environment.
In French, heterographic homophones provide an interesting example of a dissociation between orthographic and phonological forms that children have to master.
This research will be extended to other languages featuring heterograph homophones.

Difficulties in writing and their impact on composition
The second area of research looks into the difficulties in writing and their impact on composition.
Mastering graphomotor and spelling skills is a precondition for developing text production. Here we will be examine the ways in which children’s early language difficulties impact on the production of written texts.
These data have the potential to inform evidence-based interventions. Different types of impairment and difficulties in children will be investigated and compared, in a variety of languages.
Tracing the development of writing in theses different populations will lead to a better understanding of how the writing process can develop using compensatory strategies that are obscured in typical development.

Text genre acquisition
The third and last area of research is about the text genre acquisition.
In this part we examine how text genres emerge from oral language and take on a social connotation. Investigations based on spoken and written language comparisons will be carried out in languages with different conventions, such as Icelandic, French, Israeli Hebrew and English.
Children, teenagers and adults will be asked to produce narrative and expository discourses, in both written and spoken modalities. Analyses of spelling, lexicon, cohesion, syntactic packaging, discourse structure, pauses, and revisions will help to explain the emergence of these different genres and their relationships with linguistic conventions and social cognition.

The European Research Network on learning to write effectively (ERN-LWE) presents following conferences:
Conference on the training of junior researchers (25/01/2009):
The aim of The European Research Network on learning to write effectively (ERN-LWE) is to improve the understanding of how written production is mastered and how its learning and use can be optimized for all European citizens.
In order to achieve this we have to bear in mind the importance of our future researchers. This conference focuses on exactly that. Ensuring the long-term activity of the research network by training junior researchers is an important goal of The European Research Network on learning to write effectively (ERN-LWE). Among other things we will be discussing innovative methods, project management and the establishment of collaborative activities.
At the moment about 30% of all Conference and workshop participants are junior researchers. In the summer schools they are already in the majority and this is what we would like to see in the other projects.
