WASHINGTON—(ENEWSPF)–November10,2015.Today,theU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),AmericanLungAssociation,andotherpartnersareannouncingastrategyforpreventing3,200lungcancerdeathsannuallyby2020throughradonexposurereductionstrategies.ExposuretoradioactiveradongasisthesecondleadingcauseoflungcancerinAmerica.Thegoaltosavetheseliveswillbeachievedbyreducinghighradonlevelsinfivemillionhomes,apartments,schoolsandchildcarecenters.Thepartnershipincludesthreefederaldepartmentsandagencies,andninenationalorganizations.
“EPAisverypleasedtobeapartnerinthisimportantlife-savingefforttopreventlungcancercausedbyradon.Workingtogethercreatesnewopportunitiesforreducingtheriskfromradon.CombiningourresourceswillsaveAmericanlivesbymagnifyingoureffectivenessinpreventingexposuretoradoninhomesandschools,”saidEPAAdministratorGinaMcCarthy.

TheNationalRadonActionPlan:AStrategyforSavingLivessetsoutstrategiestodrivethechangesneededtoreduceexposuretoradon.Strategiesincluderequiringradontestingandreductionsystemsasastandardpracticeinhousingfinanceandinsuranceprograms,andinstitutionalizingradonriskreductionthroughbuildingcoderequirements.
Thestrategyreleasedtodaybuildsonthesuccessesofthe2011FederalRadonActionPlan,whichhasledtoprotectionsfromradoninmorethan105,000multi-familyhomesfinancedbyHUD,amongotheractionsbythefederalgovernment.Today’splanbroadensthescopeandreachoftheFederalRadonActionPlanbyincludingthehealth,scientificandtechnicalexpertiseofthenationalpartners.
Thecollaborativestrategyannouncedtodayalignsfederaleffortswiththoseofothernationalorganizationsdedicatedtoloweringradonexposure:theAmericanLungAssociation(ALA),AmericanAssociationofRadonScientistsandTechnologists(AARST),theAmericanSocietyofHomeInspectors(ASHI),CancerSurvivorsAgainstRadon(CanSAR),theChildren’sEnvironmentalHealthNetwork(CEHN),CitizensforRadioactiveRadonReduction,theConferenceofRadiationControlProgramDirectors(CRCPD),theEnvironmentalLawInstitute(ELI),andtheNationalCenterforHealthyHousing(NCHH).InadditiontoEPA,thefederalpartnersaretheDepartmentofHousingandUrbanDevelopment(HUD),andtheDepartmentofHealthandHumanServices(HHS).
Radonisaradioactivegasthatcomesfromthedecayofuraniumintheground.Nearlyallsoilscontainsomenaturallyoccurringuranium.Radonseepsupfromthesoilintobuildingswhereitcanaccumulatetohighlevels.Sinceradonisinvisibleandodorless,dangerouslevelscanexistindoorswithoutoccupantsknowing.Testingistheonlywaytoknowtheradonlevelinyourhomeorschool.Exposuretoradoncausesanestimated21,000lungcancerdeathsannually.Aftersmoking,radonisthesecond-leadingcauseoflungcancer.However,affordablemeasureseffectiveinreducingradonindoorsareavailable,andwhenemployedcanpreventradon-inducedlungcancerandsavelives.
