In some ways, it is a pity that we have tended to divide the sacraments into their particular foci. Christ is just as truly present when we celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation as when we celebrate Eucharist, and the forgiveness of God is just as truly operative when we come together to celebrate Eucharist as it is when we celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This is not to say that there is not an essential richness in our experience of the presence of the risen Christ in receiving Eucharist, and an essential need to be reconciled with the Church through the sacrament of Reconciliation when we are in a state of serious sin. But to limit the real presence of Christ to the Eucharistic context and the forgiveness of sin to the context of the Sacrament of Penance is to put unnecessarily narrow strictures on the range and influence of the Church’s Sacraments. Whenever God’s grace is present (God is graciously present!), it is healing, sanctifying and commissioning! So, the Eucharist as the primary Sacrament for the daily life of the Christian is truly food for the journey, strengthening the Christian to face whatever each day may bring. Year B

Eucharist As Food for the Journey

This weekend we will have some 40 of our young parishioners enrol in our

Sacramental Program to prepare to receive their First Communion. This will be the

final step in their initiation into our Church, a process which began with their

Baptism, most probably when they were an infant, and then progressed when they

confirmed what their parents committed them to in Baptism before the Bishop’s

representative last September.

Eucharist stands out among the Sacraments of Initiation as the only one that is

repeatable. You can only receive the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation once,

but a person’s reception of Eucharist is called their FIRST Communion with the presumption that there will be many more

to follow. In fact, anyone who has been admitted to reception of the Eucharist has an obligation to receive it at least once a

year.

Hence, the Second Vatican Council referred to it as “the source and the summit of the Christian life”. The other

sacraments, and the whole activity of the Church, are bound up with it, and directed to it.

While we tend to see the seven Sacraments as all of equal value, in actual fact the Sacraments of Baptism and

Eucharist have always had a primacy among the sacraments. This is not because they are the only sacraments that are

acknowledged by all Christian denominations. It has to do with their central position within the life of the Christian -

Baptism as the doorway into Church and its sacramental life, and Eucharist as the way in which the Church constantly

renews itself into the presence of Christ.

In many ways, the Eucharist is the seven sacraments all tied up in one - a gathering of the Baptized, it confirms us in

our faith, brings healing of body and of soul, and commissions us in our vocation in life as a calling given by God.

In some ways, it is a pity that we have tended to divide the sacraments into their particular foci. Christ is just as truly

present when we celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation as when we celebrate Eucharist, and the forgiveness of God is

just as truly operative when we come together to celebrate Eucharist as it is when we celebrate the Sacrament of

Reconciliation.

This is not to say that there is not an essential richness in our experience of the presence of the risen Christ in receiving

Eucharist, and an essential need to be reconciled with the Church through the sacrament of Reconciliation when we are in a

state of serious sin. But to limit the real presence of Christ to the Eucharistic context and the forgiveness of sin to the

context of the Sacrament of Penance is to put unnecessarily narrow strictures on the range and influence of the Church’s

Sacraments. Whenever God’s grace is present (God is graciously present!), it is healing, sanctifying and commissioning!

So, the Eucharist as the primary Sacrament for the daily life of the Christian is truly food for the journey,

strengthening the Christian to face whatever each day may bring.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

We are starting a Welfare Thursday discussion at the Multi-faith Chaplaincy located at the

University of QLD.

We read Bible verses related to help-ing those in need and reflect on what those readings are asking of us in

day to day life.

We talk then of the different things in the community that people can get involved in such as your peace and

justice group.

I just wanted to extend an invitation to any of your members that might like

to attend.

The first one will be on Thursday 17 May, 9:30—10:30am at UQ Chaplaincy.
