Malay added to Google Translation Concerns overportscan attacks

IF YOUR security program keeps warning you aboutportscan attacks, you shouldnt be overly worried.

Almost any computer on the Internet will get thatkind of random inspection from afar. And as long asyouve got a firewall and all current security patchesin place, the bad guys cant tamper with your

computer. You can think of these scans as theequivalent of strangers checking out your car afteryouve locked the doors and made sure nothing ofvalue is visible inside. LAT-WP

WHEN the name of asearch engine is anunofficial verb, you

know the Internet has definitelychanged how we connect andsearch for information.

A more recent trend is theacceptance of social networkingsites such as Twitter and Facebookas part of our everyday communi-cation tools.

These sites are not only used byconsumers to keep in touch withlong lost friends anymore as moreand more companies are usingsuch tools to get in touch withtheir customers.

This is just a natural progressionfor social networks, said DrMichael Netzley, assistant profes-sor of corporate communicationpractice with the SingaporeManagement University.

All technology innovations gothrough an adoption cycle and weare now just seeing themainstream adoption (of theseservices), he said.

Although businesses are startingto use these services in theirmarketing and promotions strate-gies, he said the game hasnt

changed very much and whetheror not they do a good job is asecondary matter.

You do not have direct controlover what users say, so activeengagement becomes critical ifyour corporate voice is to be partof that consumer conversation, hesaid.

The mainstream adoption ofsuch tools also shows that its not

just a trend among the youngergeneration anymore.

Netzley said many Web 2.0applications tend to be associatedwith a younger crowd but inreality, the demographic ofconsumers is changing.

While Web 2.0 is more popularwith Gen Y, it can still be aspopular with Gen X and BabyBoomers, he said.

But not all companies areexperts in using such tools to helpwith their marketing andpromotions strategy. Some are stillfeeling their way through this new

environment, he added. To hear more of what Netzley

has to say about social media, headonline towww.star-techcentral.com.
