Principal’s Report

Korean Sister Schools Visiting We are very pleased to be welcoming back our 2 sister schools from South Korea again this year. Both of them visited us last year and our students also travelled to South Korea and shared their hospitality . It is wonderful to have this type of meaningful relationship with students from a different culture. Working to build Intercultural understanding is important, as our students live as part of a global society and building empathy and understanding of others is essential, particularly in light of current world events. What we have found over the 13 years of our relationship with South Korea is that our students have far more in common than they have differences. Pedestrians and Driveways

Can I remind parents and carers of the importance of vigilance when walking students around the school zone. We had a young student this morning who was running ahead of a grandparent, straight across the driveway to the drop-off zone and was very nearly hit. We often see parents walking students in the middle of the staff carpark near the office, which regularly has cars backing out of parking spaces. All students should be instructed to use the footpaths – please model this with your children if you walk them into the school grounds.

We are fortunate to have good separation between our pedestrians entering and exiting the school and the limited number of vehicles allowed on site. We just need to ensure that these spaces are used appropriately to ensure everyone’s safety.

Somers Camp

We are fortunate to have 25 students at the Department of Education Camp at Somers on Westernport Bay. This is a wonderful opportunity, which only comes up every 2 years and generally for only a handful of students from each school. We were lucky in the end to be able to make this opportunity available to more students as a result of other schools not using their full allocation. There was a bit of scrambling last week with the late places, but I am sure it is worth it for the lucky students.

Shane Holloway is the staff member attending and reports that all students have settled in well and are having a great time.

Science News

Science update! Science Fair We held our Science Fair several weeks ago and it was a great success. Science Supply Australia was very grateful to host a pop up stall at our school and we received 15% of the money made, which ended up being just under $500. This money will go back into the Science budget and buy some more resources for our Science room!

Open Night Thank you to all of the families who came into the Science room on Open night. It was a wonderful turnout and was a great opportunity for students to tell their parents about what they have been learning in Science.

Interested in Astronomy? Emerald Secondary College run an astronomy club every 2nd Tuesday from 7.30 pm, which any children are welcome to attend. If you would like to attend, please inform the organiser, Brad Gibbs ([email protected]). The next session is on 13th June starting at 7.30 pm.

House Athletics Sports This year the House Athletics Sports are being held at the Ringwood Athletics Track on Wednesday June 21st. Thank you very much to the parents who have offered so far to help out on the day. We have a much larger cohort this year, so we have decided to do a few more activities during the day other than our traditional sprint, hurdles and 800m. This however means more assistance is required. If you could please spare us a day of help with timing, judging or lane marshalling, we would greatly appreciate it. Noreen McMenaman - Sport / PE

Local Landscapes Painting Program We are near completion of our Van Gogh inspired paintings and they are looking terrific. Just a reminder for parents with students involved in the painting program. We will have our Presentation Day at the National Gallery of Victoria International site (180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne) on Saturday July 1st at 11am. This is an important part of the process as students, and their guests, will not only get to see their work on display but be presented with a Certificate of Participation from the Gallery. Invitations will be sent home next week from the Gallery, detailing the above information, which will also be on Compass. Invites are number limited to the artist (student) and 4 guests. If there are any changes I will let you know. If you would like to see the Van Gogh exhibition, either before or after the presentation, I would suggest pre-booking your tickets through the National Gallery, as we cannot book those for you. The website for the gallery is www.ngv.vic.gov.au - follow the links to What’s On, then onto NGV International which will take you to the Van Gogh bookings/ticket sales. The Gallery is open from 9am on Saturday and Sunday to accommodate the huge interest for this excellent exhibition. It is not travelling anywhere else in Australia and these pieces will highly unlikely be displayed together again in this format. If you haven’t been to the exhibition I really recommend going as his works are beautiful and you get a wonderful insight into Van Gogh and his love for landscapes, in particular the seasons.
