easy for kids to stray into it. Click-click and a Peter Cottontail fan's search for "bunnies" turns up raunchy pictures of women wearing fuzzy white ears and not much else. Porn, questionable characters, hate groups, and misinformation flourish online. To preserve the best of what's online for your kids and avoid the garbage: 1. Step into their cyberworld "Parents have to get involved. Just as they know every detail of the playground around the corner -- the jungle gym, the swings -- they need to know their kids' online playground as well," says Tim Lordan, staff director of the Internet Education Foundation, a nonprofit group that produces the online safety guide. 2. Set house rules Decide how much time you're comfortable with your children being online and which sites they may go to. So there's no confusion, talk about the rules -- and the consequences for breaking them. 3. Teach them to protect their privacy While they won't fully understand the consequences of revealing personal information online, you should still make sure your children know: * never to give their name, phone number, e-mail address, password, postal address, school, or picture without your permission * not to open e-mail from people they don't know * not to respond to hurtful or disturbing messages * not to get together with anyone they "meet" online Students may not post photos of students from our school in school uniform. For children of this generation, social media sites are a way of life. In the UK alone, a quarter of children aged between eight and twelve have signed up to social networking sites, despite regulations that state users must be at least 13. Blissfully unaware of an age before social networking sites, children are the most vulnerable when it comes to potential dangers using social networking sites. Children who don’t understand dangers such as sexual predators, who use social networking sites to lure young victims, are at risk. Despite online dangers, another worry is research that suggests social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are “changing children’s brains”. Research carried out by Baroness Greenfield, a professor of pharmacology at Oxford University and the director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, suggests social networking sites are “infantilising” the minds of children. It is thought this is making children more self-centred and reducing their attention spans. This has an effect on children’s behaviour too. Children want instant gratification as they are become more ego-centric than normal at an age when they are still developing. Face to face social interaction, which is key to a child’s development, is being replaced with instant online interactions. The worry is an imbalance of social development could take away vital child development skills learnt with human interaction. Talking to Kids About Social Media Today’s teens and “tweens” are connected to one another, and to the world, via digital technology more than any previous generation. Recent data suggests that social media (SM) venues like Facebook and Istagram have surpassed e-mail as the preferred method of communication in all age groups. While today’s tweens and teens may be more digitally savvy than their parents, their lack of maturity and life experience can quickly get them into trouble with these new social venues. For this reason, it is imperative that parents talk with their children of all ages about social media and monitor their online SM use to help them navigate this new online social world. How parents talk with their kids and teens will vary slightly by age depending on the topic being discussed. These tips will help you start that journey with your family. Keep the computer in a public part of your home, such as the family room or kitchen, so that you can check on what your kids are doing online and how much time they are spending there. Talk with other parents about what their kids of similar ages are using for SM. Ask your kids about those technologies as a starting point for discussion. If they are in the same peer group, there is a good chance they are all using the same platforms together. For example: For all ages, emphasize that everything sent over the Internet or a cell phone can be shared with the entire world, so it is important they use good judgment in sending messages and pictures and set privacy settings on social media sites appropriately. Discuss with kids of every age what “good judgment” means and the consequences of poor judgment, ranging from minor punishment to possible legal action in the case of “sexting” or bullying. Remember to make a point of discouraging kids from gossiping, spreading rumors, bullying or damaging someone’s reputation using texting or other tools. To keep kids safe, have your kids and teens show you where the privacy features are for every SM venue they are using. The more private, the less likely inappropriate material will be received by your child, or sent to their circle of acquaintances. Be aware of the ages of use for sites your tweens and older school kids want to use, including game sites such as ‘Club Penguin. Be sure you are where your kids are online: IM, Facebook, MySpace, etc. Have a policy requiring that you and your child “friend” each other. This is one way of showing your child you are there, too, and will provide a check and balance system by having an adult within arm’s reach of their profile. This is important for kids of all ages, including teens. Show your kids you know how to use what they using, and are willing to learn what you may not know how to do. Create a strategy for monitoring your kids’ online SM use, and be sure you follow through. Some families may check once a week and others more sporadically. You may want to say “Today I’ll be checking your computer and cell phone.” The older your kids are, the more often you may need to check. Consider formal monitoring systems to track your child’s email, chat, IM and image content. Parental controls on your computer or from your Internet service provider, Google Desktop or commercial programs are all reasonable alternatives. Set time limits for Internet and cell phone use.. Check chat logs, emails, files and social networking profiles for inappropriate content, friends, messages, and images periodically. Be transparent and let your kids know what you are doing.

Boys Eastern Metropolitan Regional Basketball Finals On Wednesday our Senior School boys basketball team played in a round robin tournament at Maroondah stadium with the winner progressing into the State finals. Our boys comfortably won their first two games by more than 20 points and then faced Roberts McCubbin for a place in the final. Unfortunately the boys had a poor first half in that game and were down by 15 points at half time. To their credit, the boys fought back to get within two points in the second half but were unable to take the lead in the final minutes and went down in the end by 14 points, which knocked us out of the tournament. Well done to all the players involved - Tom G, Kyle C, Daniel M, Lachlan T, Griffin E, Peter B, Bailey S and Jack P. Thank you to the Scagnetti family for helping out with scoring on the day.

News from the JSC….. Christmas is fast approaching and we would like to help out others in our community who aren’t as fortunate in a couple of ways. Firstly, we are going to be participating in the Wesley Mission Victoria’s ‘Food for Families Appeal’. The aim of the appeal is to collect non-perishable food items and toiletries for families in need in the lead up to Christmas. Each year this service helps more than 55,000 people, not just at Christmas but throughout the year. Donations can be sent to the office. Secondly, we are going to be participating in the Salvation Army ‘Toy Appeal’. Students can donate a present for a child of the same age and gender to be able to unwrap at Christmas. We will be helping the Salvation Army to collect about 500,000 toys/presents to give to families in need. Donations can be sent to the office with the present clearly labelled who it is intended for, eg: – A girl aged 9. Please see pages at the end of this newsletter for suggested donation items.

CHAPS NEWS

The end of the year is fast approaching but we still have a number of things happening at CHAPS.

On 27th November we have Family Life Victoria coming at night to offer their sexuality education program aimed at children from

Grade 1 – 4. You should have all had a form come home but if you have misplaced it, one is attached for you. We need these returned by 20/11 as we need to know how many people will be attending.

We will be holding a small Christmas raffle and will be sending the tickets home next week. The prizes will be drawn at the Carols night on 11/12. We will again be doing a sausage sizzle with drinks and icy poles, more information will be sent home soon.

As the year comes to an end we will be thinking about the CHAPS committee for next year, we will send out a list of available positions and details of the AGM. We very much understand that people have very busy lives and are only capable of doing so much so there is no pressure to put your name forward. However, if there is a position that you think you might like to fill but think it may take up too much time, please discuss it with me and we may be able to work something out.

We will be organising more social events next year and we are hoping to make CHAPS an organisation that you want to be involved with. We will brainstorm social and fundraising ideas at the start of next year so keep an ear out for potential ideas.

We will be having an end of year get together on 2nd

December at 6.30 pm in the staff room which will be a catered affair. This will be open to everyone, not just CHAPS members. We will send home details soon as we will need to know numbers.

In the meantime if you have any questions at all about CHAPS, please do not hesitate to contact me.
