We have been working throughout the year with a highly regarded expert in the area, Lisa Keskinen. This week we have been doing "Walk Throughs", where a group of 4 teachers observe another class for part of a writing lesson and talk with the students about their work and how they are feeling about their writing. Each group of teachers observes in 3 classrooms in different areas of the school. It has been a wonderful experience. Getting a chance to see other classes in action and to share the success has been very useful. As a staff we are really pleased in the overall improvement in the quality of writing and more importantly the enthusiasm and enjoyment that students are displaying. We look forward to building on this into the future. Year 5 Camp I need to thank the staff and parents who assisted last week to ensure the Year 5 Camp at Coonawarra in Gippsland was such a great success. The weather was not kind at the start of the week, but it was very different to Melbourne and from Wednesday it did not get in the way at all. The students were a terrific group who worked together well and as a result got the most out of the experience. Thanks to the teachers and parents who put their normal lives on hold to make this experience happen for our students. Road Safety Again we have a challenge, with parents acting as very poor role models at times and ignoring basic road safety rules. Traffic safety is important anywhere but particularly in school zones. Crossing the road in front of the school and not using the pedestrian crossing is so dangerous and the wrong example to set for those watching, let alone for the safety of those doing it. Double parking is another common road law broken for convenience over safety. We have also had parents standing on the road and talking in a group. Please ensure you follow all the road laws to ensure our students stay safe. We are always role models, not only for those in our care but also for those around us who observe our behaviour. one2one iPads For those parents who are a part of the leasing program for one2one iPads, which was offered only once 2 years ago, I have information regarding the buy-out price, which will come home in a separate letter in the next couple of days. At that time it will also be available through the ICT link on the school website. Please look out for this information if you are involved in this program.

For parents with students moving into Year 5, there will also be a form shortly which we would ask you to return regarding your intentions for 2014. Details of the school’s recommendations for purchasing and options for doing this through the school are on

the link to the one2one program from the ICT tab on the website. Graeme Caudry - Principal

Sports News Interschool Sport Congratulations to the Boys’ Basketball team who competed last week in the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Basketball finals. They played a round robin day at Maroondah Stadium against the other Divisions in the EMR. At the end of the day they were defeated but they played their best, so well done boys to reach such a high level of sport. On Friday 6

th December, the Girls Rounders Team will be competing in the Division final against Dorset Primary school. We will

have to start practicing again as this sport was played in term 1, being a Summer Sport. Good luck girls.

National Athletics Congratulations again to Matthew S and Carli F who will be leaving this Friday for Brisbane to compete in the National Track & Field Championships. They will be competing against many other children from all over Australia from the other States and Territories. There will be approximately 600 children at this competition. THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE

Write the answer to the challenge, with your name and class and place it in the box outside the office by Wednesday morning. Work with Mum and Dad if you get stuck.

A man has a barrel filled with water that weighs 100kg and then he

Telephone: 9725 1206 OHSC 9724 4514 web: www.croydonhps.vic.edu.au

puts something into it. Now the barrel weighs less than 100kg.

What did he put in the barrel?

LAST WEEK’S CHALLENGE

Can you write 3 days in a row that don’t include Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday? Well done to Abtin in EL SH and his Dad! Mr Mc will come and see you and give you your prize.

CHAPS NEWS

There are lots of things happening at CHAPS at the moment and I do apologise for the number of notices that have come home today. Please take the time to read them though as there is some important information you need to consider. On 27th November we have Family Life Victoria coming at night to offer their sexuality education program aimed at children from Grade 1 – 4. Forms were due back yesterday but if you would like to attend and have not yet returned your form please let me know ASAP. Tickets for our Christmas raffle have been sent home today. The prizes are great and will be drawn at the Carols night on 11/12. We will again be doing a sausage sizzle with drinks and icy poles, a flyer has also been sent home today. We have sent home a letter about the AGM and a list of available position. We very much understand that people have very busy lives and are only capable of doing so much so there is no pressure to put your name forward. However, if there is a position that you think you might like to fill but think it may take up too much time, please discuss it with me and we may be able to work something out. We will be organising more social events next year and we are hoping to make CHAPS an organisation that you want to be involved with. We will brainstorm social and fundraising ideas at the start of next year so keep an ear out for potential ideas. We will be having an end of year get together on 2nd December at 6.30 pm in the staff room which will be a catered affair. This will be open to everyone, not just CHAPS members. We have sent home an invitation today and if you would like to attend please make sure you RSVP by the 27/11. This is important for catering reasons. In the meantime if you have any questions at all about CHAPS, please do not hesitate to contact me.
