Encourager THE FIRST BAPTIST LYMAN

WEEK OF JUNE 30 2010

Greetings

In this edition of The Encourager I want to begin something a bit unusual

A few years ago I participated in a seminar in which we read Inside The

Magic Kingdom Seven Keys To Disneyrsquos Success by Tom Connellan The

book challenged me to consider how our churches function I believe Connellan has helpful

insights for us today So let me address the first key to success and how it applies to us

Point 1 The competition is anyone the customer compares you with

Okay First thought should be wersquore not competing with other churches Right wersquore not

But we do have major competition The world is the enemy of God John said that wersquore

not to love the world or anything in the world (1 John 215) He goes on to say ldquoThe world

and its desires pass away but the man who does the will of God lives forever (17)

So what do we learn from this The influence of the world is very strong Why else would

John say speaking to believers not to LOVE the world Because itrsquos easy to settle for the

temporary pleasures the world has to offer Paul wrote to Timothy ldquoFlee the evil desires of

youth and pursue righteousness faith love and peace along with those who call on the

Lord out of a pure heartrdquo (2 Timothy 222) In other words Paul is saying to repent Have a

change of mind and direction in your life Turn from the world and pursue godliness

The application for us is thisWe must live ldquoholy and godly livesrdquo (2 Peter 311b) We must

live this way because itrsquos pleasing to the Lord and we are to be a living sacrifice holy and

pleasing to God (Romans 121) But also the world is looking for an alternative Everyone

in the world was created in the image of God just like every believer But those in the world

are confused because too many believers donrsquot live in a manner consistent with their

Christian profession The world is comparing Christianity to all the other ideas and

philosophies Thatrsquos sad because you and I know the truth that sets us free Letrsquos live so

that in comparison to the world we are salt and light (Matthew 513-16) Letrsquos live to show

them the difference Christ has made in our lives Letrsquos allow God to show off through us

Their souls depend on it

God bless

Sermon on the Mount Study

Sunday Morning Services

Join us as we study Christs

Sermon on the Mount

Thank you so much for all your prayers last week We

could feel them as we walked the streets of Asheville

engaging people in conversation and pointing them to

Jesus We had a blast with our backyard Bible clubs and

your students even painted a parking lot for a church

We saw God do incredible things both in us and through us and we

cannot wait to tell you more about it

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for letting me hang

out with your students I am so proud of all of their hard work - and

more importantly of the way I saw them get out of their comfort

zones and love Jesus and people like never before Itrsquos my highest

joy after Jesus to be here right now with your students Thank you

for that privilege

The first third of this summer has been a blast and now as we move

toward summer camp at Daytona Beach I canrsquot wait to see what

God does next Please begin to pray for our students and our adult

leaders I believe God is going to show off in ways we have never

seen that week and I canrsquot wait to see students being saved

surrendering their lives more fully to Jesus and seeking to live their

lives for His glory and not their own Itrsquos going to be an incredible

week and we are pumped

PS We had two guy slots open up for Daytona that we need to

fill If you know of a middle or high school guy who wants to go with

us please see Ricky ASAP
