SUMMER 2021

Everything changes and everything stays the same. The arts are still alive and successfully adapting to these new times. All of us at Huntington Arts Council are working to ensure that as many arts programs continue to be available to as many of us as possible. We are adding some new twists to our programming to help us continue to expand our audience.

Thank you to our government officials for the ongoing support in recognition of our contributions to art and culture on Long Island Funding from the Town

of Huntington, New York State Council on the Arts and Suffolk County has been critical to keeping our services evolving and in place.

Our summer is as full as ever. As we move forward to present a 56th season the Huntington Summer Arts Festival we will continue to include a combination of live and streamed events. This format worked so well for us last year and we are excited to bring these wonderful performances to a wider audience. I am honored to welcome back Canon USA as the Lead Sponsor, and grateful for their dedication to this event. I am excited to tell you that this year, HAC is adding some visual arts aspects to the festival. The Heckscher Museum of Art joins us to feature Art Happenings! five afternoons devoted to creating works in tandem with LI artists (see page 4).

Our other programming continues with plans to safely allow the addition of limited in person participation. We are gearing up for the 2022 Grants for the Arts program. Please make sure attend a workshop in order to put in an application (see page 6). We are looking forward to receiving applications for outstanding and creative projects

that help make Long Island a vibrant community. We are excited to have our full gallery schedule to showcase the excellent works from our community. Our website and social media presence augments the in-person exhibitions in our gallery, just one more dimension to make art accessible.

HAC continues to collaborate with Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce and our fellow Long Island arts councils to expand services and highlight the creative forces of our community. We are delighted to be a part of the Huntington Village Art Walk on September 12; please come and join us in enjoying an artistic day in Huntington!

Pandemic or not, the arts remain a great connector, healer and inspirer. Creative people continue to come up with creative solutions and innovative artistic programming. To paraphrase Stephen Sondheim: “We’re still here!”

About the Cover

For the 4th consecutive year HAC has provided our artist members with the exclusive opportunity to create original artwork for the Summer issue of the Arts Cultural News inspired by the Huntington Summer Arts Festival. The cover image titled “Good Summer’s Energy?”, by artist member Danangelowe A.J. Spencer (A.J.) is an oil pastel on canvas with digital manipulation. In this piece the artist has intertwined several arts and cultural references, as well as the excitement and

energy of a live performance festival.

A.J. best defines his inspiration for the cover as follows: “The answer to the ques-tion “Where do we get “Good Summer's Energy?” and my inspiration for the piece, can be referenced at the very top of the image, through the sun. The rays fuel the energy from the dancers, the sounds of summer, the rhythm by which everything and everyone moves. A good summer for me is a culmination of fun, friends, family, art, performances, nature, love and positive energy, all of which you can find at the Huntington Summer Arts Festival.

“Good Summer’s Energy?” takes on some of the signature elements of my prior works which include a question or a question mark. The ballet dancers, a black back-ground and lots of RED represent physical energy and actions. These elements also coincide with my recent exploration of movement and the emergence of the hu-man spirit from a dark space, which was in turn inspired by emerging from a dark

space due to the pandemic in 20-21. The overall work serves as an entendre between the current physical world represented in my work and the energetic vibes of the Summer Arts Festival.”

A.J. is a multifaceted Jamaican born artist whose work includes, film, photogra-phy, graphic design, and mixed medium paintings, and is passionate about visual storytelling and conceptual art. While earning a degree in Communications and Media Studies at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY, A.J. created what has now become his brand D.A.J.S Visuals & ART-BOii. In a quest to continuously understand life and its fundamental truths, his art often poses a question to its audience. A.J. can also be found collaborating with other artists to highlight their work through short abstract & documentary style films, in the continuous pursuit of his goal of becom-ing an artistic director to bring his creative vision to life. For more information on A.J and his work go to WWW.DAJSVisuals.COM & WWW.ARTBOII.COM.

56th Huntington Summer Arts Festival HighlightsThe Huntington Summer Arts Festival always features a vibrant roster of performing artists covering a multitude of genres. We are pleased to present a great summer of music, dance and theatre in 2021. We will again be providing a combination of in person and live, or pre-recorded streaming so everyone has the opportunity to experience Huntington’s mainstay summer event. The Tuesday Family shows will be streamed exclusively, and our website www.huntingtonarts.org, will have important details about all of the performances.

Audience size will be capped, and reservations will be required in order to attend in person at the Chapin Rainbow Stage. The Town of Huntington will provide an online registration link that will be available on our website. Everyone will need to continue to follow NYS/CDC guidelines in order to remain on the designated concert grounds. We can assure you the music and entertainment will be astounding!

Work continues to fine tune the schedule and program details with updates available at www.huntingtonarts.org. Here are few Festival highlights to pique your interest!

• Huntington favorites from the Chapin Clan will be here to launch the Festival on

June 25th in high style.

• Broadway luminaries Andrea McArdle (the original Annie) & Donna McKechnie (Cassie in A Chorus Line) will share the stage with an enchanting evening of Sondheim & Hamlisch show tunes.

• We’ll celebrate July 4th with “Gumbo, Grits & Gravy,” a new Americana/Roots collaboration with brilliant musicians - violinist Anne Harris, blues singer and guitarist Guy Davis, and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Carmella Simien.

• A fresh interpretation of Shakespeare’s

Romeo & Juliet, with live music, will bring the magic of this timeless romance to life.

• Mid-summer will feature Americana/Folk & Roots music, including the Annual Huntington Folk Festival with daytime showcases, a harmony workshop, and evening program with two superb ensembles – L. I. - based Quarter Horse, plus The Honey Dewdrops from Baltimore!

• This year’s great Jazz lineup includes the Jazz Loft Big Band with leader Tom Manuel on trumpet & vocalist Danny Brachen on July 10; Huntington Jazz

Week July 21 - 25, featuring new vocalist Michael Moya, contemporary and world fusion stylings from Chieli Minucci’ Special EFX All Stars (with saxophonist Eric Marienthal, and Lao Tizer on keyboards); and the modern master of Latin percussion Pedrito Martinez.

Huntington Arts Council is collaborating with The Heckscher Museum of Art to have a visual arts component to the Huntington Summer Arts Festival. Each Thursday* in July an artist will be in Heckscher Park from 4 - 7pm creating. Come, bring your own supplies, create along with them, or just watch and enjoy the creative process. Everyone is invited to explore the Museum when they arrive and add to their arts experience.

We are excited to include a diverse group of Long Island artists to share their art and inspire artists from the casual observer to the seasoned creators. These are free events and all are welcome.

July 1 - Kevin McEvoy July 8 - Diego GarciaJuly 15 - Patty EljaiekJuly 22 - Marie Saint-CyrJuly 29 - Jan Guarino

Please come and enjoy this exciting experience with us! Make a day of it: a visit to The Heckscher Museum of Art, the Art Happenings in the park and an evening performance. Go to our websites for safety guidelines and protocols: www.huntingtonarts.org and www.heckscher.org. *Dates may be rescheduled due to inclement weather.

This past spring the Huntington Arts Council had a call for our current Artist Circle members and JOURNEY partner school students to submit original artwork for the cover of the Summer issue of Arts Cultural News. The call focused on the spirit of the annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival. Members submitted diverse works inspired by the energy and excitement of the Festival.

Since 1965 the HSAF has brought the community together to experience live music, theatre and dance. This year, after seeing so many vivid representations from the

artists who responded to the cover call, we sought to bring the visual arts to the Chapin Rainbow Stage in a new way.

Along with the cover call winner, Danangelowe A.J.Spencer, 10 additional artists' work will be displayed on banners that will adorn the perimeter of the enclosed audience viewing area. Featured artists include: Naomi Diracles, Patty Eljaiek, Alicia Gitlitz, Elena Kariyannis - EROCKSNY, Kevin McEvoy, Meagan J. Meehan, Lori Scarlatos, Eileen Sleckman, Toxic/Nature Studios, and Katherine M. Trunk.

We welcome you to the 56th edition of the Huntington Summer Arts Festival, beginning June 25 with a familiar familial gathering of Chapins - Tom Chapin (Harry’s brother), the Jen Chapin Band (Harry’s daughter and her sidekicks), and the harmonious Chapin Sisters (Tom’s daughters Abigail & Lily). They’ll be here to kick off another summer of LIVE music, dance and theatre at the Chapin Rainbow Stage in beautiful Heckscher Park in Huntington Village.

We look forward to over six weeks of FREE, LIVE performances in the park! We have a wonderful roster of artists and ensembles lined up for your entertainment, many who were originally scheduled to appear last summer. Most have not had an opportunity to perform before a live audience in more than a year, and they cannot wait to entertain you. A number of your favorite local ensembles will return this summer, reinvigorated with a new repertoire. Touring Artists will amaze in a multitude

of musical genres, including Americana/Folk & Roots, Broadway, Classical, Jazz and World Music. We have a few other surprises planned, including a modern interpretation of “Romeo & Juliet!” and terrifi c streamed performances for our Tuesday Family nights. Please frequent our website www.

huntingtonarts.org for the full schedule and details about the Festival.

We have been working closely with the Town of Huntington in planning the region’s most varied and storied Festival of free performances. Special thanks to the Dept. of Parks & Recreation, General Services and Public Safety for their eff orts and logistical support. We also thank the County of Suff olk and its Offi ce of Cultural Aff airs, and the New magic

as part of a larger audience via streaming, they speak to our collective spirit and sense of community. It does not matter if it’s a beautifully performed pas de deux, or a thrilling and dramatic oration; or even the quiet, soulful rendition of a simple folk song. Community Partnerships

HAC is proud to partner with Leilu Huntington as hosts of our Artist Member Spotlight presented in their upstairs dining area. This opportunity, free to HAC member artists, will rotate seasonally and provide local artists’ exposure to Leilu’s patrons.

The owners of Leilu, James and Meghan LaCourte, have always lived in Huntington and graduated from Huntington High School. Their love for their home town is only rivaled by their passion for great hospitality, and experiencing new, exciting foods and wine. This passion led them to open Leilu in 2019, named after their two daughters Leila and Lucie. They share

A panel from the Arts and Experience, and Young Professional Committee chose 5 fi nalists and presented them for public voting. Receiving over 1,500 votes, the winner is Elaine Jensen’s “PRO POOCH.”

The Young Professionals Class of 2021 participated in the brewing process for the YPA which will be available for purchase at Six Harbor Brewing Company beginning June 22nd. The public is welcome to come to the Can Release and

The Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce began their collaboration with Six Harbors Brewing Company in 2018 for their Celebrate Long Island’s Young Professionals Event. This collaboration allows for the honorees to be a part of the brewing process with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Huntington Chamber Young Professionals group.

The Huntington Arts Council joined a coalition of a diverse arts leaders, artists, public servants, and business/community leaders from across Long Island in a call to artists. Shot to Reunite sought local creatives to submit works of art for use in an island-wide campaign promoting the COVID-19 vaccine and related public health messaging. The focus was on culturally resonant works that engage diverse ethnic, cultural, and BIPOC communities.

A review committee of leaders in the arts and culture sector, as well as local public health, art, and community representatives are evaluating the artworks. Winners will be notifi ed by June 7, 2021. For information go to www.shotoreunite.org

Community Partnerships are fundamental to who the Huntington Arts Council is, and the people we serve. We are dedicated to making arts and culture accessible and relevant to all members of our community

in unique and engaging ways. If you are interested in learning more about partnering with HAC in an impactful way, please email Kieran Johnson at [email protected].

Through the work of Kyle Sadis, Licensed Real Estate Sales Person at Signature Premier Properties, a donation of $500 is made to HAC each time Kyle sells a home in Huntington Township. This generosity and support is a true testament to community support, and represents our shared belief of unity, respect, and understanding through support of the arts.

here my whole life. The opportunity to give back to the town that I love in a way that supports something that I am passionate about was an easy decision for me. Nightmare on Main StreetJuried Student ShowJuror, Sueey GutierrezSubmissions Due: September 20thOctober 22 – November 13, 2021

Students’ grades 6-12 are invited to participate in Nightmare on Main Street with art inspired by Halloween! Halloween is a celebration observed in many countries. For some, it is a time,

or refl ection for remembering loved ones that have passed. For others it is a celebration of life. Many experience Halloween mainly with candy, costumes and spooky decorations. It all depends on your cultural background. How do you celebrate Halloween? What cultural signifi cance does Halloween have for you? Do you enjoy dressing up in costume, watching iconic scary movies, or taking the time to think about your loved ones that have passed? Using whichever medium you desire drawing, painting, photography or sculpture etc., show us how you celebrate Halloween and what it means to you, your family or your friends. To enter go to huntingtonarts.org.

Juror Sueey Gutierrez is a New York based artist born and raised in Brooklyn. Her family, originally from El Salvador, is of Mayan descent. She began drawing at the age of 3 and by 6 had received a scholarship to study art at the Brooklyn Museum. Arts in Education JOURNEY

Globalization of Hip Hop Virtual Program presented to both remote and in person students

The Huntington Arts Council’s JOURNEY Arts in Education Program has been working closely with local school districts to support cultural arts programs in schools since 1985. Every year the majority of our 8 partner school districts schedule artist presentations, borrow discovery chests, participate in the exclusive student art exhibition – High Arts Showcase and our CTLE teacher professional development courses. This 20-21 school year the districts serviced from September to June are Cold Spring Harbor, Commack, Harborfi elds, Huntington, Kings Park, Northport-East Northport, Plainview-Old Bethpage and South Huntington. Following is information about each component of JOURNEY.

Visiting Artists

Currently, throughout the school year 6 school districts have used their JOURNEY Visiting Artist funds to bring cultural arts programs to their students. Some of the programs presented are Nai Ni Chen – The Art of Chinese Dance, Reaction Dance Company – The Globalization of Hip Hop,

and Origami Air – Origami and Culture Interactive Workshop. Over 1200 students participated in the cultural arts programs made available through virtual remote and in person formats.

Kaylie LaLota, Dance Educator at Northport High School, describes her experience with the Reaction Dance Company for The Globalization of Hip Hop virtual program, as follows.

“It was great to collaborate with Gina Van Bell, the Arts and Education Coordinator at the Huntington Arts Council and bring a virtual dance workshop to my students at Northport high school. My students learned the history and background of Hip Hop, K-Pop and Bollywood as well as basic choreography that of each genre. Our choreographer, Juliette was very knowledgeable, friendly and a pleasure to work with! She listened to our needs and geared the workshop to my student’s level. Overall, it was a great experience and a way to connect to another dancer using our community resource during this crazy time!”

Discovery Chests

Over 25 Discovery Chests have been loaned this year to classrooms. These chests include the use of google slides containing artifact descriptions and internet resources. With more than 30 physical discovery chests on hand and 10 diff erent world cultures represented, we encourage partner schools to take advantage of these loans as much as possible. Non-partner schools can borrow the chests for $50 per chest, not including delivery.

High Arts Showcase

This past spring the exclusive student art exhibition, High Arts Showcase XVII, presented a superb body of work

from 11th and 12th grade students in our JOURNEY partner schools. These students learn fi rsthand what is involved throughout a gallery exhibition; from submitting entries and writing an artist statement to titling, framing and pricing their artwork. Proceeds from any artwork sold during the exhibition went directly to the students. Congratulations to the students that presented their work and to those that were awarded honors.

CTLE Cultural Arts Workshops

Last fall the CTLE teacher professional development JOURNEY Program workshops awarded 75 CTLE certifi cates totaling 219 CTLE hours. This included 99 hours granted to teachers to meet their Language Acquisition requirement

through the NYSDE. HAC is a sponsor for New York State Department of Education and therefore able to provide CTLE (Continuing Teaching and Learning Education) hours as required for teaching certifi cate holders in New York State. These valuable professional development opportunities embody the goals of the JOURNEY Program that strive to promote cultural appreciation in schools through the arts.

This upcoming fall CTLE workshops will be off ered in October and November of 2021. The workshops are free for our partner school districts and available to other teachers in New York State for a fee of $50. Go to huntingtonarts.org for information and class registration.

June 11, 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm | "Second Fridays: From the Hand Drawing" | An artist may create works of art in a broad range of media but an artistic idea often begins with a drawing. Drawings, whether created in pencil, ink or pastel, exhibit a greater immediacy and closer connection to the artist. This program highlights some of the remarkable drawings from the Hofstra University Museum of Art’s collection, by artists such as Benny Andrews, Leonard Baskin, Jean Cocteau, Nancy Grossman, Philip Pearlstein, Diego Rivera, Norman Rockwell, George

Romney, Isaac Soyer, Abraham Walkowitz and Benjamin West. Free.
