The Faithful Navigator In recent years, Christopher Columbus, known as the Faithful Navigator, has received some bad press by those who would rewrite history that disparages Western civilization. I had a student declare that Columbus raped the Indians! I asked him if he had read this in Columbus' log since no other source of his adventures in the New World exists. He had no answer. He was simply repeating tales. While Columbus was no saint, he was no devil either. He was a man of his time. He was a devout Catholic sailing west to find an alternate trade route to the Indies for the Spanish Catholic monarchs, Isabel and Ferdinand. Arriving on October 12, 1492 on the island he named San Salvador, Columbus writes about the beautiful, friendly yet naked natives who were gentle and quite disposed to receive the Gospel and be baptized. He travelled to other islands and be-lieving he was in the Indies, he called the natives Indians. The name stuck though some find it a misnomer and prefer Native American. He went on to other islands planting the cross and the royal flag claiming these lands for God and for Spain. The Indians he met belonged to the people called Taino, however there was another tribe called Caribe who were very aggressive and cannibalized their conquered peoples. When Columbus returned home, he had to leave some men on Hispaniola because the Santa Maria had sunk. When he returned the men were gone, assumed killed by the Taino, or perhaps by the Caribe who would eventually conquer most of the Caribbean killing all the indigenous had not the Spanish arrived. The King made Colum-bus governor of the new colonies but Columbus was unable to rule the conquistadors who followed and often the Indians were enslaved, forced into a type of serfdom and poorly mistreated. Many died and many more died with the introduction of small pox and other diseases. The King and Queen were upset at the Indians being enslaved or chained, after all they were the newest subjects of the Spanish Empire and ought to be treated as such. Eventually slavery of the Indians was altogether forbidden. On the island of Hispaniola, the first church built was dedicated to the Blessed Mother in Santo Domingo, St. Mary Minor. Ultimately all benefited from Columbus' great discov-ery. An interracial culture developed in much of Latin America--the Mestizo was born. Human sacrifice in Mexico and canni-balism in South America were ended, and the Indians were al-most all converted to Christ. Large-scale evangelization began with the arrival of Franciscans, Dominicans and Jesuits. Though many Indians became slavers or forced into labor, none were enslaved after the first colonial generation. In Spain, a pro-longed debate convinced the highest authorities of Church and state that the Indians had souls equal before God to the souls of Caucasians, and rights equal before the law to the rights of any Spaniard. Columbus was as flawed as all men are but to judge him by 21st century mores is unreasonable. He changed history forever. Though Columbus had his faults, he nevertheless can-not be denied his contribution to exploration and the faith he brought to the New World, which was a world where cannibal-ism was widespread and human sacrifices were unparalleled in all of human history as happened under the Aztecs. Christopher Columbus is the discoverer of America, and by that discovery ultimately responsible for America's evangelization; and for this we should forever honor him as the Faithful Navigator.

Convent (Pangborn Place) Following the lead of Pope Francis in reaching out to our broth-ers and sisters, a new Human Concerns Committee is being established at Holy Trinity. Our initial focus is to become aware of the needs of our fellow parishioners. A small gesture of kind-ness - an errand to be run or a light chore done - demonstrates God's command to love one another. If you would like to join this group, there will be a meeting Mon. Oct.12 at 7:30 in the convent. For information call Denise Gordon 201-774-8805.

National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day

October 15 Each and every day, in areas across the world, ex-pectant moms will feel their baby’s first kick; parents will listen to their newborn’s first cry; and families will celebrate the birth-day of a healthy baby. Also each and every day, 13 babies will be lost to SIDS and other sudden, unexpected infant deaths; more than 70 new parents will have listened sadly to their stillborn baby’s silence; and countless lives will be lost to miscarriage and other causes of infant death. In particular, October 15th is called “National Pregnan-cy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day”. On this day in many parts of the world, people will light a candle and offer prayers in memory of those lost babies, born and unborn. In solidarity let us join together and do the same here in our homes. If we light a candle and let it burn for at least 1 hour, there will be a continual wave of light across the world all day. May these children celebrate in heaven in the comfort of our Savior’s arms.

MINDFULNESS and SELF-CARE for MOMS Remember, you can only love your children as well as you love yourself.
