According to the Mayan Calendar the world as we knowit is going to come to an abrupt end on the 21stDecember. So, if like me you leave your Christmasshopping to the last minute, there’ll be no need forpresent buying this year and here’s to another drink inthe German bar!

This magazine sees us return to pastures old, with the infamousdouble issue. I’m off to Antigua for Christmas so a January deadlinewas to be avoided at all costs! So here it is; our Winter#endoftheworld issue.

We put together a great apocalypse fashion shoot on the beach, cooked up our own disaster scenarios and tackled a survival guide forany one left standing. In the very likely event nothing happens on the21st, we’ve put together a bucket list to get your own ideasfermenting on how you can live your long and fruitful life to the max.Aside from that there’s the usual gubbins, schizzle and magic.

Hopefully see you again in 2013 for our February ‘Love’ issue.

As you sit down with your family onChristmas day and tuck into the daddyof all lunches, feel safe in theknowledge that you’ve survived theimpending apocalypse, and those peskyMayan’s were in fact wrong.

Although, to be fair to the ancientMesoamerican civilisation, scholars state thatconjectures of impending doom are not foundin any of the Mayan accounts, and it’s insteada statement made by a handful of writers, historians or astronomers in order to up theirbook sales, as we’re all suckers for a goodArmageddon story.

In reality, the Mayans used several intricatecalendars to number their days, and their longcount calendar is due to end on the 21st of thismonth, concluding a near 2 million day cycle. The Mayans believed that God had previouslycreated three failed worlds, followed by asuccessful fourth- ours, and when that cyclefinished, that simply the fifth would begin. So the Mayans were actually predicting thatthe world would continue- that in another7,000 years from now things would be exactlythe same as they are today. It’s always seemed

we’re a society obsessed with endings; theoldest book we’ve got finishes ratherdepressingly when mankind receives a goodbeating for our millennia of wicked ways. Butthe Mayans worked a different way, lookingfor a guarantee that nothing would change. They had a completely different mindset.

The Mayans weren’t the only people to predictthe end of the world. Incan and Egyptiancalendars, as well as the prophecies ofNostradamus all supposedly point towardssome sort of end or change in 2012. And ofcourse there’s the usual amount of slightlyderanged individuals who’ve cried out thatthe end is nigh in recent years.

I suppose the truly surprising thing about allthis is that there are actually those out therewho hold some truth to these predictions.Hopefully you’ll have taken the theme of thismonth’s DV8 as it was intended, a tongue incheek approach to the topic that providedsomething a little different to the usualYuletide offerings. But there are those out therewho genuinely think this could happen.NASA had to set up a specific page on theirwebsite answering questions from worried

individuals. One woman said that she wasconsidering killing her children and thenherself to avoid having to witness first-handEarth’s destruction. And NASA says thenumber of questions only rises, as the dategets nearer.

Ron Hubbard, the builder of survival sheltersin California, says that normally business isgoing well when he gets one or two buyers amonth (God only knows who or why). But astime has closed on December 21st, sales of hisshelters designed to protect families in themost extreme and unimaginable situations hasexploded to one a day.

I suggest we just let these people get on withwhatever it is they like to get up to in CrazyTown, and concentrate on the positives that lieahead. Yes, the Chancellor may have recentlyadmitted that things haven’t gone quiteaccording to plan with saving the economythis year, and our faith in certain nationalbroadcasting companies took a bit of abashing, but overall it’s been a successful yearfor Old Blighty, and as D:ream like to pointout, things can only get better.

So it’s nightfall onthe 21st December, and I’m madlyclinging to a piece ofBournemouth pierin a sea of moltenlava. An alienspaceship hovers inthe distance as agargantuan crackforms across thecliff top and TheWest Cliffdisappears into theabyss, thousands ofpeople letting out acollective scream ofpain and fear.

All the whileunscrupulousnightclub ownersare hauled beforethe devil and beastscircle overheadthrowing lightningbolts at the dyingand already dead.

A lion atop a carroof floats by on atsunami of debris. You can’t describethe heat. It feels likemy skin isdisintegrating inthis inferno. I rollon my back andlook to the heavensfor redemption, hoping that thesecond coming ofChrist is imminentand that Jesus willextinguish theseraging fires...

Who can tell what willhappen should theworld end. Doomsdayall sounds verydepressing. Here’s astab at a fewHollywood-esquetheories we shouldperhaps start planningfor:

Disease: Late one night a MadCow has a few toomany Jagerbombs andjumps into bed withSARS and a monkeywho has a potent strainof Ebola. Over thecourse of a wonderfulevening a mutantdisease is bred, and byearly the followingmorning the disease isairborn. Dressed up infull evening attire ‘babybastard’ will sneezeacross the oceans andthe world will becomea toxic petri dish ofhorror. Masked peoplewill madly flee theland, and think‘Waterworld’ as poorlymaintained, floatablecrafts are lashedtogether as peopletrade soil and feeblyhope seaweed +seawater = sustenance.

Alien invasion:The most popular alieninvasion scenariosinvolve the alienslanding on Earth, destroying orabducting the humanrace, crushing Earth'smilitary forces, andthen destroying Earth'smajor cities. Usually, the story seems tocentre on the battlesbetween the invadersand Earth's armies, asin ‘The War of theWorlds’, and weultimately become aslave planet to ouroppressors. Anothertwist is that our alieninvaders covertlysubvert human societyusing disguises, shapechanging, creating conflict inhumanity and lettinghumans destroythemselves. David Ikeseems to preach muchon this, as does theChurch of Scientologyto a degree.

Environmental catastrophe:Close your eyes andpicture a lump of rockthe size of the Isle ofWight and as deep as askyscraper. Imagine 30of these boulderssuperheated, rainingdown like missiles on aland mass twice thesize of Europe. Where’sBruce Willis when youneed him! It’shappened before, there’s no reason whyit shouldn’t happenagain. In ‘2012 TheMovie’ a series ofenvironmentalcatastrophes utimatelycauses the Earth to tiltoff its axis. In recentyears we’ve had floods, earthquakes, tsunamis.Looks like we’re oncourse for somethingexciting!

Religious doomsday:Your most commongarden variety. All whohave lived before uswill arise from theirgraves to be judged byThe Beast; completewith fire andbrimstone, rapture andcondemenation. Simplyput, you’re either goingto hell or about to beembraced by the warmbossom of an angel andno, you’re not asleep inFYEO. The secondcoming of Christ isupon us and this timearound there’s noescape for Tony Blair. What goes aroundcomes around; karmadoesn’t take sides.

The apocalypse is finally upon us, the four horsemen have made it to town

and some serious shit has just gone down. Let’s face it; the apocalypse is

going to suck. Within days, if you’ve lasted that long, you’ll probably be

onto your last packet of radiation-resistant noodles and contemplating how

your own urine tastes. The time has come for all those wasted Sundays

watching Bear Grylls sleep inside a camel to come in handy, and luckily for

you, DV8’s put together this handy survival guide to help you along.

ARMAGEDDONOUT OF HERE!

PREPARATION1 DURATION2 RECOVERY3

WATER_ SUSTENENCE_Humans cant survive more than a fewdays without water, so if the thought ofdrinking your own urine doesn’t quiteappeal to you (although it can’t be muchworse than Strongbow, right?), you betterhave a plan in place to obtain clean water.

Fill up the bath, sink, empty bottles andeverything you can get your hands onbefore the water supply gets shut off. Anylarge containers will also come in handy tocollect rainwater, unless there is nuclearfallout. It may also be an idea to stock upon some water purification tablets – peoplemay look at you oddly now, but you’ll belaughing two weeks in.

Let’s face it, once the apocalypse hits, the staff at your localfast-food chain, although already zombie-like, aren’t likely tostick around and it’s doubtful that you’ll just be able to ‘popto the shop, love’. Even before disaster strikes, it’s a good ideato stock up on non-perishables, you’ll save money by eatingout of your dry-store stash and in these financial times whoisn’t interested in that. Everybody wins. Well, you win.

As well as grains, beans etc, cans are the way forward. Thereare stories of people eating cans of food over 50 years old andthey seem alright (?), and anyway, even if you don’t eat all ofthem, who could resist a bit of post-apocalyptic pop-art styledécor as your walls become lined with cans of Campbell’s.Don’t forget to stash a can opener as well.

Statistically, survivors are likely to be those who are naturally immune to what-ever infection it may be, lucky, or very good at hide and seek. This doesn’t bodewell for the majority of us. In terms of infection, you’d do best to be somewhererural; a low population lowers the risk of infection spreading.

In the case of something like a tsunami, official advice urges people to move 30mabove sea level or 3k inland. If you haven’t got time for that however, and you’resuck at home we suggest the roof. In case of a hurricane, you’re safest in the centreof the building, away from any windows and external walls, for an earthquakeyou’re best off out in the open, away from any buildings, and if there’s a tornado, tunnel underground. You may be pleased to know that all the recycling you keepmeaning to do may come in handy when disaster strikes: if you’re trapped in abuilding, crouching under stacks of old newspapers or magazines may save yourlife as paper wont compress under the weight of rubble.

DEFENSIBLE POSITION_

SELECT YOUR WEAPON_Whether you’re defending yourself against zombies, or just people who have lostthe plot in the confusion, you’re going to need a weapon. A gun may seem like theobvious choice, but they’re not all that easy to get hold of in this country. Not onlythat, but the sound of gunfire is a sure way of attracting attention to yourself andgiving away your position to crazies who have seized the opportunity to embracetheir cannibalistic tendencies. What you need, is something for close-up work, think hammers, cricket bats, axes, you get the idea.

I guess the most important thing is to makesure that it is actually all over. You don’twant to spend your days rebuildingcivilisation only to find out that round twois just around the corner and you shouldhave spent your time elsewhere because, well, you’ll die.

If you are sure it’s all over, you’ll need torestart utilities. Now, I’m not going to pretendI would know how to do this, but what I willsay is that although you may not have gone toa library since school, now is probably a goodtime to start; all the information you’ll needwill be there, and who’s going to check yourlibrary card post-apocalypse.

A NEW DAWN_Congratulations, you’ve survived the apoca-lypse. Now that’s all over though, you’ve gotsome more business to handle – procreation.

We’re all familiar I assume with Darwin’s the-ory of Natural Selection (survival of the fittest),so if we take this as a model, chances are thosewho have made it through whatever disasterhas befallen man, are going to be the cream ofthe crop. Only the fittest, most intelligent willremain, so ladies, take your pick. Bow chickawow wow.

So we’ve survived the day and the21st of December has been and gone.

Perhaps it’s now time to reflect onlife and all it has to offer. It was

during a time of such contemplationthat I compiled the following ‘LifeList’. It was never designed as an

exhaustive list and I’ve added to italong the way. I hope it gives youreaders some inspiration, which is

too often just a sublime term, so getpondering your future, because

there’s a world of possibilities outthere...

HEALTH

It happens every year. We're going to eat way too much,we're going to drink too much and we're even preparing tomiss a few gym sessions (shock horror). And quite franklywe at Body Supplements cannot wait for it. The holidays arecreeping up on us and so too are the new years resolutionsand self loathing that comes with our stretched waistbands. But we wouldn't want it any other way and actually, we'requite looking forward to it. If you're like us, Christmas andNew Year is a time to let your hair down and indulge.

Of course it's great if you can abstain from junk food and say no to aSunday afternoon on the sofa but we're happy to pig-out and be slobsat Christmas. We've worked hard all year and this is our reward. Wealso know that the new year brings a wave of excitement for trainingand that's exactly how we feel. In theory, a diet can start anytime butlet's face it, life gets in the way. So why fight it? Why not plan to relaxover Christmas and begin training early for that summer body in thenew year. When you're sat on the beach or sprinting those last fewhundred yards of the Bournemouth Bay Run, won't you wish that youstarted preparing just a little sooner? The reality is, Christmas takes it'stoll on the bank balance and the best laid plans can immediately bedelayed if you don't have the pocket money to support your trainingprogramme. So rather than silly stocking fillers and chuck away gifts, why not pop in and speak with us about our gift ideas or vouchers. We know it's not as romantic as underwear or chocolates - but it's agift they'll really appreciate!

ASK THE EXPERTS // BODY SUPPLEMENTS

SKYCIG - MUST QUIT...With 2013 rapidlyapproaching, you’ll bestarting to think aboutpotential New Yearresolutions, and for some ofyou top of the list will be toquit smoking. We all knowthe health risks attached tothat infamous stick of death, and yet for many it seems tobe attempting theimpossible to stop. A lot ofthis is down to ‘smokingcues’, those seeminglyunobtrusive everydaytriggers, that don’t go awayonce you’ve quit. But if youcan plan ahead, and beaware of what triggers youto smoke, you’re halfwaythere my friend.

1. Smoking and drinking at thesame time is a habit manysmokers enjoy and miss oncethey stop. But the link betweentobacco and alcohol will passwith time, you just need to beaware of what you’re upagainst, and hang in there.

2. Being around other smokersis never helpful, but unless youplan on changing your entiresocial group, it’s somethingyou’re going to have to dealwith. If you live with a smoker, ask if triggers such as ashtrays, boxes of cigarettes or evenlighters can be kept out of viewwhen not being used.

3. Work can push even the mostdevoted quitter to their limits. You’ll be tempted to join yourcolleagues outside for a quicksmoke and a catch-up, but don’tcave in, as this type of stress-attached smoking is mostdangerous in the early weeksafter you stop.

4. Everyone has their ownpersonal cues, which can beanything from being bored, driving, finishing a meal, walking to the shops or havinga cup of tea. Don’t be fooled bythese seemingly harmless butlethal cues, as too manysmokers are.

---------It’s difficult to successfully quitsmoking by going completelycold turkey, so an electroniccigarette could be the solution.SKYCIG is the UK’s leadingprovider of e-cigarettes, thecheaper alternative to tobaccocigarettes and an indispensabletool in the pathway to quitting.

The DV8 office decided to testthe SKYCIG and see if it livedup to the hype. The packetcame with two normal filtersand one menthol, along with aUSB stick charger and a mainsadaptor. Whilst the e-cig isheavier than an actual cigarettefeels, and doesn’t taste thesame, simply having somethingin your hand that’s shape feelslike a cigarette goes a long wayto curbing those urges for agenuine smoke.

Having to recharge the SKYCIGcan at times be annoying, butthe advantages of being able touse it inside are brilliant, especially in these wet andmiserable climes. I’ve beensmoke free for three weeks now,and apart from the healthbenefits have saved a nifty £20that would have normally gonetowards smokingparaphernalia, which all addsup in the end, and if I’m honest, would be the main reason forme quitting.

Rock is the latest company tomake Westbourne’s historiceighteenth century Methodistchurch their home. Sharing with aTesco Express, it offers a poignantreminder that society’s newreligion is convenience; perhapsthe venue choice was their way ofprompting some interesting foodfor thought for diners.

No matter how you may feel about this ina social context, it is undeniable that onfirst sight the venue is very impressivewith the stunning stained glass windowsthe focal point of the room. You can seewhat they have tried to do in terms ofdesign with heavy woods in keeping withthe building’s heritage juxtaposed againstplush velvets and bright colours whichattempt to bring it up-to-date.

The menu itself is enticing, promising‘modern British food…locally sourcedproduce…[and] Michelin star trainedchefs’. What was delivered however, fellshort of our expectations. Both meats forour main courses were over cooked andtough, the mozzarella in the salad that wehad to start was watery, coarse and lackedflavour and the puddings were equallyunderwhelming. The best dish of the mealwas the smoked salmon served withcrème fraîche, capers and toast – a simple, traditional combination that’s difficult toget wrong.

Overall, we were rather disappointed, notonly did the food not live up to thepromises, but the atmosphere wassomewhat lacking. We hope that this wasa unique experience and is not an accuratereflection as the venue has a lot ofpotential that on our visit was unfulfilled.

POPPY MAE:The story behind Poppy Mae:Owner Matt, opened it for his daughtercalled Poppy Mae back in May 2009 andbuilt up the cafe from a little shop unit inWestbourne, expanding year on year. Thisyear it was decided to move into the towncentre. Moving away from the shabby chiclook the new place has a lot more of anindustrial feel. The concept is the same, themenu is kept small so they concentrate moreon quality and the coffee is still the mainfocus. SIENNA RESTAURANTNearly 80 years ago, André Michelin and his brother Édouardintroduced the Michelin star system, the first country-widefood ranking system in France which was later adopted by therest of the world. Since then, the coveted Michelin star has be-come synonymous with exquisite, inspiring food and excellentservice.

Ranging from 1-3 stars which are awarded by anonymous inspectors, thehighly sought stars are notoriously hard to obtain and even harder tohold on to. It is so difficult in fact, that only one restaurant in the countyis able to boast one - Sienna in Dorchester. Having been awarded theirstar in 2010, the first in Dorset for over 20 years, chef Russell Brown andEléna Brown (restaurant manager) have maintained and built upon thefantastic reputation that they have gained.

Seating just 15 guests, Sienna is the smallest Michelin starred restaurantin the country, and as such, does lend itself to allowing you time to brushup on your Chinese whispering skills. On first impressions, you may notimmediately recognise it as a Michelin star venue. Far from the artifi-cially pristine aesthetic that you may associate with these high-end es-tablishments, Sienna has a more refreshingly modest décor; the venue isclearly an honest, unpretentious labour of love for this culinary couple.

After tucking into homemade breads and a delicious selection of canapésthat included an innovative goats cheese truffle rolled in porchinni dust;a creamy yet smokey test of the senses, we were presented with ourstarters. From the small yet varied selection on the lunch menu, we se-lected the perfectly smooth duck liver parfait which was served with aspiced plum puree and Agen prunes to off-set the richness, and toastedbrioche to add a sweetness and further depth of flavour. As well as thiswe had the pan-fried fillet of brill with chilli, red pepper and springonion broth, which from first bite was an explosion of flavour; a wonder-fully light broth with a balance of spice that complimented rather thanoverpowered the brill.

The confited leg of duck demonstrated classical skills and was cookedperfectly. What really made this dish sing however, was the perhaps un-conventional accompaniments; parsnip puree, marinated fennel, applesalad and cider sauce. The puree itself was incredibly smooth and sweetwithout being overpowering, but it was the addition of the apple saladthat really made a difference to the dish, the tang of the fruit cuttingthrough the sweetness of the parsnip and allowing the flavours of theduck to take centre stage.

The second main course that we chose was from the dinner menu; sad-dle of wild venison with walnut gnocchi, roasted salsify, button onionsand game jus. For each dish, Eléna chose a wine to match and all of thesebeautifully complimented their respective dish, but it was the youngNew World Shiraz chosen for the venison that really stood out to us.The subtle smokiness in the wine enhanced the flavour of the perfectlypink meat and richness of the jus. The walnut gnocchi was also a lovelyaddition – light but full of flavour, it tied together the gamey, earthynotes that run throughout the dish.

The dessert menu is equally tempting with a range of indulgent sweetsto suit any taste. We opted for the glazed coffee tart with espresso jelly, marmalade ice cream and orange reduction, and a golden syrup andmascarpone mousse served with toasted gingerbread crumb, lemon curdand granita. As I am being honest, the coffee tart was a bit disappointing;the pastry was lovely but the filling was rather runny and the jelly espe-cially was a touch too bitter for our liking. The mousse however, was adifferent story with a delicious juxtaposition of sharp granita against thesweet lemon curd, a light mousse and moreish gingerbread.

Not only will the food blow you away, but it wont break the bank either:three courses including canapés and homemade breads is priced at£28.50 pp (lunch) or £43.00 pp for dinner, a very reasonable price forsuch exceptional food. I think it is a fair assumption that you walk in to aMichelin star restaurant with incredibly high expectations and that per-haps you are more critical because of this. Sienna however, is very diffi-cult to fault, the knowledge and passion that this small teamdemonstrates is outstanding, and the food and wine reflects this.
