Are you ready for ILF closure?

As many of you will know, the Independent Living Fund (ILF) will cease to exist from 1st April 2015 and its role will be transferred to local authorities.

Since the announcement the ILF independent assessors have carried out over 1000 transfer review visits. The aim is to issue individual support plans to users, detailing their current support arrangements and independent living outcomes.

Users can now get easy read versions of the Transfer Review Programme guide and ILF user guide on request, in addition to versions already available in Braille, large print, audio and languages other than English.

The ILF has committed to sending users regular newsletters until it closes in March 2015, with the first planned for this summer.

For more information about the Transfer Review Programme please contact the ILF by email: [email protected] or phone: 0845 601 8815

National Minimum Wage

Support for Personal Assistants and employers

The deadline for funding applications to support the learning and development of Personal Assistants (PAs) and their employers (individual employers) has been extended. People aged 18 or over who employ PAs in England can now apply for grant funding until 28th February 2014 to pay for all types of learning and development that meets their needs, including qualifications. The grants are paid up front and include associated costs, such as travel and replacement/additional PA costs. For more information on how to access the fund go to:

www.skillsforcare.org.uk/ individualemployerskillsfunding

Each year the National Minimum Wage increases. The following rates will come into effect on 1st October 2013:

• The adult rate will increase by 12p to £6.31 an hour

• The rate for 18-20 year olds will increase by 5p to £5.03 an hour

• The rate for 16-17 year olds will increase by 4p to £3.72 an hour

• The apprentice rate will increase by 3p to £2.68 an hour.

Anyone employing their own employee must legally pay at these rates or above. If you need help in re-budgeting in order to meet these rates please contact your usual Enham Trust Advisor.

The grant application form can be found on www.skillsforcare.org.uk/individualemployerskillsfunding

All good things come to an end and the contract that we held with Dorset Council for Direct Payment support expired on 30th September. However, we are still present and providing support to direct payment users in the area.

The Council decided to provide a framework of providers, and we have been successful in becoming part of that framework. Any of our past clients in Dorset can therefore still come to us for support.

Our new Dorset service

Bournemouth Let’s Get Sociable

Let’s Get Sociable recently had its application to become a ‘Community Interest Company’ approved! This means they have legal documents that state their work is carried out for the benefit of our communities and is driven by our social aims.

Let’s Get Sociable set up to provide social opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, aiming to provide choice, support, and community involvement.

With a team of qualified and experienced support workers as well as fantastic volunteers from their local communities, Let’s Get Sociable’s vision is to see more people out doing the things they love to do and enjoy taking away restrictions on things like time! They stay out until all different times, so if it’s nightclubbing ‘til midnight you’re after or an afternoon in a historic city then they are sure to have something for you.

Let’s Get Sociable offer day trips to various places, as well as evening and weekend activities. There’s no membership so you can just pick and choose what you join in with giving you the freedom of choice.

“Providing fun exciting outings for adults with learning disabilities

Their services are offered to adults from the ages of 18 years upwards. You don’t have to have a Social Worker to go out with them! They have people that are living independently as well as those in supported living and living with parents. You can self-fund or use Direct Payment if you have it – it’s up to you.

If you’re interested in coming out and having fun then feel free to get in touch with Let’s Get Sociable. They’d love to see you out. They have a laugh together as well as support you to improve your social skills and make long lasting friendships. Everything Let’s Get Sociable do is out in the community – it is not a day centre!

Our staff can be particularly helpful to you if you need help with recruiting a new PA, putting in place all the legal requirements (such as contracts of employment) or budgeting, but if there is any area of managing your Direct Payment about which you are unsure, please do get in touch.

Please note our new telephone numbers (0845 504 0722 or 01264 345829)

New Direct Payment recipients can also still be referred to us by their Social Worker. We therefore look forward to continuing to work with current clients and new ones over the coming three years or more.

My name is Lisa*. I used to be a Primary School Teacher until I became ill with MS five years ago. I left my job, which I loved, because of my illness. My diagnosis left me feeling very low and depressed and I became very isolated as a result. Every day was a struggle. I became increasingly less mobile and unable to do the simplest of things by myself, such as washing my hair and getting dressed. My family do not live locally so I lost regular contact with them, which made me feel sad and lonely.

I decided I could not continue to live like this. I contacted Social Services, and they discussed the option of Direct Payments to help me with the care I so desperately needed. I had never heard of Direct Payments until now. I liked the sound of it and I was referred to Enham Trust. An Enham Trust advisor came to visit me at home and talked me through the process step by step. At first it was a little daunting and scary, but Enham were very patient with me and if I didn’t understand something they would take the time to explain it again until I did understand.

I have been using Direct Payments now for 4 months. It has been a lifeline. I still have my bad days, but I am coming to terms with my illness, I am accessing the community again, and I even get to visit my family, and this is all because of Enham and their continued support.

Thank you Enham, continue the good work.*Our case study participant was happy to share her story with us, but we have changed her name to protect her privacy.
