DV8 HOTLISTWHAT WE LOVE AND HATE

THUMBS UP...Finding an ace new cocktail

We are normally pretty loyal to our fave cocktail(Long Island Ice Tea anyone?!) But we still lovefinding something completely new that makes us

go 'yummm!'

DancingJust dancing.. After a long hard week whereeverythings not gone your way, dancing is thebest remedy to make your worries fly away. Thisalso works if you've had a great week too.

XFactorOkay, maybe it's not cool anymore to look forwardto seeing Gary Barlow's face every Saturday night, but it's such a winning formula - bad singers

demoralising themselves on stage just to get a hugfrom Gary... It's golden TV!

iPhone 5All you Apple fans out there have been countingdown the days until the next generation of

everyones favourite phone is released. We hopesome of you were quicker of the mark than us!

Being on the waiting list sucks.

THUMBS DOWN...Brag statuses on FB

Of course your boyfriend/girlfriend is really hot,and your brand new car is simply amazing &

most importantly we’re dead chuffed you got thattax rebate. Stop publicising your good news to us,

it’s starting to look smug.

Losing your phone/keysHow are you running this late and now you can’tfind your keys? And why have you lost yourphone just as you’ve run out of battery? AHH!

Tripping up in public when you’re on yourown

Do you just carry on and walk it off? Or is it bestto just laugh and not look around? We think thebest way is to skip off and pretend it’s part of your

stride!

We are really sad to say thatone of our favourite cafe/barshas shut its doors. TheSummertown Wine Cafe was afirm favourite with us here atDV8, whether it was anafterwork drink, an accessiblego at wine tasting, or perhapsa place to have 'work'meetings (we think the settingof the venue is great for beingproductive). We loved the laidback atmosphere, fantasticdrinks selection, not tomention the happy hour!

We would like to give a bigshout out and thank you toone of Oxford finestestablishments, you will besorely missed.

Ultimate Picture PalceWith its single screen and vintage look, the Ultimate Picture Palace is a greatplace to get nostalgic for the golden age of cinema.

Located in the heart of Cowley Road it is easily found and ideal for watching the latest releases, or for taking astep back in time to watch a classic film. We were delighted to hear that it has recently had a refit, which should add an extra bit of enjoyment to themovie-going experience. So we’re going to get ourselves a bucket of popcorn, a tasty snack and we will see youthere!

Oxford BeerFestival

Oxford Town Hall will be hosting the 15th Annual Oxford Beer Festivalbetween 11 and 13 October as part of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).Head over to the town hall and treat yourself to one (or more) of 160 real ales, real ciders and perrys as part ofa festival that always proves popular. Admission to all of this costs only £2 on the door (free to card-carryingCAMRA members). We’re already planning how we’re going to spend our beer tokens, indeed the mostdifficult question we have to ask ourselves each year is, ‘where to start?’.

NELLY HIGH HEEL TOUR@

When July’s Guest Editor Sally told usabout the Nelly High Heel’s tour com-ing to Oxford we knew it was going tobe a night to remember! Nelly.com is aSwedish fashion brand (we’d compareit to ASOS) making its UK launch thissummer and bringing a tour like noth-ing else to a town near you (especiallyif you’re a shoe addict)! We were alsoexcited to give 5 pairs of VIP tickets toDV8 readers and we’d seen loads ofcommotion on facebook that week asthe girls of Oxford tried to secure theirplace by entering our exclusive comp– we hope the winners had an acenight! Hosted at Camera nightclub onFriday 13th July we knew the partywas going to be a good one and notunlucky at all! The event promised tobring glamour, fashion and freebies toour lives! The first 150 guests receiveda choice of a FREE pair of shoes fromthe beautiful range showcased in glasscases around the club; we didn’t knowhow to begin to make our choice! There were high heels in all differentshapes and styles (and a lot of glitter!),from the lower more office appropri-ate option to the very high studdeddisco option that you would definitelyhave to get a taxi in! The Sinome in

black was amazing, we swear thatheel was as long as our arm, youmight just have to stay propped up atthe bar when you’re out in those! Wealso loved the Gabriella flats made ofsuede and with a studded front, youcould definitely fight away the crowdson the morning commute in those ba-bies! Competitions ran throughout thenight including a Onesie competitionwhere you had to do a creative pose ina onesie with your mates for thechance of winning one of the luxuri-ous onesie’s (bought to you by One-Piece). The place was heaving withglamorous girls excited by the launchand the chat of which shoes would ar-rive on their doorstep (you got a ran-dom pick from your top 3). We thankNelly for an awesome night and invit-ing us and the DV8 readers to get in-volved in their amazing launch. Weare excited to follow their fashion andpromotions and we urge you to checkout their online store atwww.nelly.com/uk. If you want tostand out the crowd, Nelly is defi-nitely for you!

THURSDAY @

We at DV8 were more than slightly excited when Thirst announcedthat it would be getting a revamp and we were eager to get downthere and see the changes for ourselves. It has always been one of ourfavourite nightspots in Oxford and an ideal place to spend a leisurelyhour, or indeed party right through until 3am.The refurbishment, which started a couple of months ago with theinterior, has now been completed with a refining of the garden and anew cocktail menu! We met up with Hannah and Yaz who took a breakfrom preparing for another big night to kindly give us an inside lookinto what we can look forward to.The feeling we got from them is definitely a sense of making whatworks well even better, as well as the more obvious sprucing up of thedécor. From where we were sitting outside, reclining on comfortableseats, enjoying a brief moment of warmth at the end of the Britishsummer, they have certainly done a fine job of maintaining Thirst’sunique character. For us, it is the New York-style urban garden asmuch as anything that sets Thirst apart from the other places inOxford. It is ideal to sit outside earlier in the evening for a civiliseddrink as well as when things get more blurry later at night.A quick glance at the cocktail menu showed us that they have made aneffort to broaden the range without losing those crowd-pleasingcocktails that we all like to see. One example jumped out at us as weworked our way down the page. For people who enjoy a Long Island

Iced Tea, there are now several further options to tempt you, including; Toyko Ice Tea; Polynesian Iced Tea; and a Boston Tea Party. And that is just the beginning of where the new menu goes.A cocktail that particularly caught our fancy is the Toffee Apple, whichis a refreshing combination of Kraken rum; apple schnapps;butterscotch schnapps; apple puree; and toffee sauce. It lulls you inwith a soft, sweet taste, before hitting you with a satisfying alcoholicedge. Hannah and Yaz both commented on how the people who work atThirst are like a family and enjoy working together, and aim to reflectthis in the experience for the people who spend time drinking there. The people who visit Thirst are as loyal as any others and indeed it isnot unusual to bump into someone who drops by four or five times aweek for a cheeky cocktail or two (or more). Finally, we asked them about what there is coming up for peoplevisiting Thirst and they teased us with a number of exciting nights, including; a night for returning second year students - the ‘Re-Freshers’; DJ Nights; a flairing bartending competition is promisedreally soon; and much more. So watch this space! After all this, it would be rude not to return to explore the new menufurther and spend some more time sitting outside drinking cocktailson those comfy seats. So we may well see you there!

FASHION WITH ETHICS

DV8OXFORD.CO.UK | 13

FASHION

Poverty Sucks is an exclusive clothingboutique originating in Oxfordshire, selling quirky clothing that will makeyou stand out from the crowd. Theydescribe themselves as ‘Slaves ofSpontaneity, uniqueness andindividuality.’ If you want to wearsomething a bit different and not likeyour usual high street attire, then this isdefinitely the label for you. We caughtup with the man behind the brand,Daniel Warne to find out a little bitmore about Poverty Sucks Clothing...

We were really excited to hear about PovertySucks Clothing, how has the launch been? The launch has been a long time coming, thereis so much behind the scenes work to be doneto get everything ready. But it has finallyarrived and I couldn’t have asked for it to goany better, the clothing has been a sellout hitthanks to the support from friends, family anda feature ad in The Sun newspaper.

Poverty Sucks clothing seems to tie up to twodifferent worlds, what is the meaning behindthe name?I already knew I wanted to be involved with acharity from the very begining, however thename just came to me while I was creatingsome designs for the first collection.

How long did it take from thinking up theidea to launching? What were the stages?I have always wanted to run my own businessand fashion has always played a big part in

my life. So I could say it has taken years to getwhere I am today, however from the actualtime I sat down and put together my businessplan to the launch day it took around 12months. The first stage was to research how Iwould actually go about starting a clothinglabel, from where to source the material from,to how I actually get my designs printed. Ispent months and months researchingeverything i needed to know and again withhelp and support from people in the business Ihave finally got a grasp on how to create asuccessful clothing label.

Have you always been interested in fashion? What is your background?I have always been interested in all differentkinds of fashion. I do not have any formalbackground in the fashion industry, howeveras a customer of so many different stores Ihave an eye for what is popular. Myself andco-creative designer Thomas Roberts also havea vivid kind of twisted imagination, hence thegraphics for the first collection

You first collection contains some strongimagery, what was your inspiration behindthem?I pretty much bounced ideas off of my creativedesigner Thomas Roberts and let him run wildwith the first collection, and I think it has paidoff. Thomas will also be a big part of theAutumn/Winter collection, he has been a hugeinfluence and inspiration on Poverty Sucksand I would like to thank him for all of hissupport.

You must have been busy since the launch, have you got any events/shows coming up?Starting from scratch was extremely tough totry and get exposure and get my collectionseen by everyone, however thanks topersistance and a feature ad in The Sunnewspaper and a few different advertisementsin things like the Abingdon and WitneyCollege handbook the first collection has beena sell-out hit. I will be hosting a charity eventin aid of comic relief in the near future, thevenue and plans for this are yet to beconfirmed, however follow us on Twitter tokeep up to date @Povertysucks1.

As we said, we loved the first collection, whenis the second one out? What can we expect inthe future?Thank you so much, the Autumn/Wintercollection will be arriving by the end ofNovember.

Personally speaking, what sort of fashion styledo you like? I have so many different inspirations when itcome to fashion. Just to name a few are,Pharrell Williams and David Beckham. Oneday I will wear fitted jeans and a top the next Imay feel like wearing self created ripped-upshorts and a check shirt.

HOT TUB PARTY@

Wahoo has always amazed us with the events they puton, not only are they unique, they always push theboundaries! When we heard that they were going tohost a hot tub party, not only where we intrigued, wewere raring to get our shorts and bikinis on and get wetand wild!It turned out that we were not the only ones who wereexcited about the prospect of taking a dunk on a nightout! It was also a great (and one of the last) opportuni-ties of the summer to show off the tans that people hadworked on (if you had stayed in England all summer

then this wasn’t really the case!)Throughout the evening people ducked in and out of thehot tub, headed to the bar and danced the night away, making the most of the extended opening hours andfantastic drink prices. We had a really great time (maybetoo much of a good time, we had a round of sore headsin the morning, well, afternoon when we woke up).

The summer weather really sucked in England, but thisbrought us a little bit of summer fun!

It may only be in its secondyear, but the Face of DV8cover photoshoot is alreadyone of the highlights of ouryear here in the DV8 office. All through the votingprocess on facebook theexcitement was buildingand on the big day wehurried over to Anne Veck’ssalon in Bicester to seewhat the team would comeup with this year.I think it’s safe to say that I had forgotten theorganisation that goes into putting together anevent like this (I just turn up, write this stuffdown and don’t question how everythinghappens around me). Right from the start thehair and make-up artists took up theirpositions and efficiently began creating thelooks for the models. As with last year, each model would bewearing two different outfits, generouslyprovided by Lenie’s Revival, which is basedon St Clements in Oxford, as well as by BootyB. It always impresses me how the outfits werechosen for each model and then the hair andmake-up created to complement each look. The models who generously gave up theirSunday to take part in the photoshoot were thelovely; Riminy; Madeleine; Miriam; Kirsty;Sarah; Amelia; and Lea. They were a pleasureto work with for the day and of course did agreat job looking stunning in Norbert’s photos. One of the aims of the Face of DV8competition is to give local models, or indeedthose with no modelling experience, thechance to feature on the cover of a lifestylemagazine dedicated to Oxford. As a result, included in the group were; the current MissOxford; a former Miss Oxford; Miss Englandfinalists; a wedding dress model; and someone

for whom this was their first experience infront of the camera. One thing that was clear tome was how easy going they all were and if

there were any nerves, they helped create arelaxed atmosphere which quickly eased them. Also, this was the first (and I suspect, the last)time that I will be taught how to complete aRubik’s cube by a model just before they go infront of the camera, although I have nowcompletely forgotten how to do it.Although everyone took their roles seriously, there was a party atmosphere in the salon, with music playing throughout the day andoccasionally there was even some spontaneoussalsa dancing. All this took place to a backdropof popping flashing bulbs and bursts ofconversations in French that I tried my best tofollow, but it turns out I don’t understand asmuch French as I thought. I can ask the way tothe train station no problem, however forsome reason this didn’t come up so I couldn’tshow off my skills.Occasionally, I ventured into the make-uproom to see how Sheena and Sarah were

getting on with making sure that the modelshad the necessary high level of glam. Theroom was always a hive of activity withvarious brushes scattering the tables while thetwo make-up artists worked away, chatting tothe models, making sure that they werecomfortable with the look that was beingcreated. One thing is for sure - the final resultalways made for a vibrant, impressiveensemble when paired with the outfits andhair combinations. There is nothing quite like seeing a hairextension hanging on a stand, indeed, it’s notsomething that I often see in my day-to-dayexistence. So, the first time I saw one out of thecorner of my eye hanging there, my reactionwas that a small animal had somehow got intothe salon. However, once I had got over this, there was no denying the great job that Anne,Aneta, Ricardo, Emmanuel, Maria and Luciedid to make some quite stunning hairstylesthat will certainly make for some sensationalcover images for the magazine. Balmain hairextensions were used for the shoot, with Anneand her team singing their praises. They spokehighly of the versatility of the extensions, aswell as commenting on the ease of use. Formore information on Balmain’s range ofproducts, visit their website(http://www.balmainhair.com/)So, what is the verdict on our second Face ofDV8 cover photoshoot? Having spoken to thepeople who took part, I think it was aresounding success and we will have somefantastic photos to go on the cover of themagazine. I’m glad that I’m not the personwho has to choose between them, as they allcould be used. Finally, we would like to extenda huge thank you to everyone who took partin the day and we’re already looking forwardto similar events in the future!

Spring Summer ‘13 shows saw the fashiondarlings making hair raising discoveries andsetting high standards when it came to hair trends.Fabulous up-do’s dominated the catwalks at MarcJacobs who’s models strutted around revealing60’s inspired voluminous ponytails, Marchesaintroduced a touch of romance with plaits andtwists flowing through elegant creations andDonna Karen stepped over to the wild sidecreating stunning dishevelled up-do’s. Who isbetter to reflect and emphasise this current beautytrend than Anne Veck of renowned Anne Vecksalons, Oxfordshire. Drawing her inspiration fromSpring Summer ’13 collections, Anne Veck givestips on how to turn heads at Oxford Fashion Week.

‘My favourite looks by far were structured OscarDe La Renta beehives embracing the old schoolallure which is regularly sported by red carpetregulars Dianne Kruger and Adele. I think SpringSummer’ 13 will be the season of Hollywoodglamour with a hint of bohemian chic where big-dressed up styles with plaits and twists willdominate. Party hair will get an extra flourish witha revival of traditional hairdressing techniques -from finger waves and French pleats to beehivesand towering up dos. These are the looks that willraise your style stakes at Oxford Fashion Week’.

Anne is a huge fan of Oxford Fashion Week and isvery supportive of local talent, always wanting togive back to her local community and contributecreatively.

She offers hair styling tips and pointers on how torecreate the key looks turning heads at this muchanticipated event. ‘One of my favourite stars whoshows off the trend gracefully has to be Lana DelRey. She makes big beautiful, getting her look isnot hard if the right tools are used. Having workedwith Balmain Hair as their Ambassador since 2011,I guarantee, where length or volume is missing, hair extensions do the trick. Balmain hair is aperfect way to add that extra vigour fullyembracing Lana’s iconic look, which I wouldpolish up with a range of Matrix products’. Beingthe leading lady of the beauty industry, Anneknows hair, and can be seen implementing thetrend in her own Avant-Garde inspired collection –the Valkyries, where she lets her creativity escapeinto hair craft, fashioning the most inspiringhairstyles within the hair industry.

Did the summer leave you wanting to take up somesports? Then the first thing you will need to do is get

kitted out....

DV8OXFORD.CO.UK | 29

FITNESS

When it comes to getting involved insporting activity, the DV8 office is split intothree main groups of people. Firstly thosewho love sports (and are good at them!), youwill find them always up for a game oftennis or football. Second, are those who goto the gym, not out of any real love forphysical activity, but they know their nextholiday is around the corner and want tolook hot on the beach. And the third group ofpeople really only enjoy watching sports(probably in the pub!).

Despite this, we like to think this summer haschanged all of our attitudes. We really feltinspired to participate in more sports by thefantastic performance of Team GB at theOlympics. That's when we realised that weneeded to find ourselves a sports shop up tothe challenge of being able to kit us out.

We headed over to Abingdon Sports inAbingdon where we knew we would be ingood hands. It is headed up by MichaelSamways, who has an impressive 43 years inthe industry supplying discerning customers

sporting goods with a personal touch. Trust us,if you are looking for some new sportingclothes or equipment, it is essential you spendtime with experts in order to get the rightcombination for you, because buying trainersis a bit more complicated than just choosingones you like the colour of.

Abingdon Sports is well equipped to helpanyone out regardless of their sporting ability, ranging from technical gear including rugbyarmour, boots etc. all the way through toFitFlops (with that all important wobbleboard, including some very glitzy lookingdesigns). Of course they also stock everythingin-between and we were particularly taken bysome long and short sleeved t’s that would begreat for spinning.

For us, Abingdon Sports is the first place to goif you are looking for some new sporting gear, and need to get help and advice to ensure youget the most out of your chosen sport. Checkthem out at: 4 High Street, Abingdon or tel01235 520008

We werepleasantly surprised by thewine l ist which featuredregional Spanish wines. Nextcame the food with a range oftapas dishes, as well as dailyspecials that were well wortha look. Everyones favourite sausage-teer is back. After moving from the trendy neighborhoodof Jericho, the new Big Bang restaurant canbe found in the up-market Castle Complex.

The Big Bang is the true gastronomic experience ofOxford. They source everything from within 20 milesof the city and in doing so, allow you to taste the realflavour of Oxford, not a chain restaurant imitation ofit. They also throw in the best local art and livemusic, all served up in one of Oxford's prettiestcorners with more than a touch of Oxford charm.

Opening at the beginning of October, we caught up

www.thebigbangrestaurants.co.uk tel: 01865 249 413

with the man in charge, Max Mason!

Tell us what you have been up to since the Big Bang in Jericho closed? It has been a long story, we were supposed to have a 4 month tenancy in Jericho, whichstarted back in 2004 and that lasted for 8 years! Since the restaurant closed last September Ihave been having a well earned rest. I have used the time to look around restaurants inLondon and further afield to try and steal some of the best ideas and bring them back toOxford. So I am home bearing bounty.

What sort of ideas have you brought back with you?So, things like the design of the restaurant, sharing platters, big bowls full of shepherds pieor lamb cobbler. I also learned that people love the British brand. I will be encouragingpeople to go out for a British rather than an Indian or a Chinese.

So the new Big Bang is here, it looks amazing, what should we be expecting?A little bit of the same as before, but with a hell of a lot of added polish! We have tried toretain the things we loved about the old place and add a lot more. If you imagine all yourfavorite British dishes, we will be serving it.. Shepherds pie, roast dinners, BBQ’s the works!

What is your favourite British dish?I love a cream tea and I love a roast… We of course will be doing both!

Will we be seeing a return to the Jazz evenings?Yes, in fact now we are part of the Oxford Castle Quarter we are starting in mid-Octoberwith the Discover the Quarter Jazz night.

So, we understand that you are working with OCVC College to give younger people achance to gain some hands on experience as part of their course, can you tell us more?It will be fantastic trying to bring along 16 to 19 year old students who are incredibly keenand talented. I want to follow in the footsteps of Oliver, Ramsey. Not only will they bemanning the kitchen, but also the restaurant. All forty students will be working herethroughout the academic year!

You have your launch party this weekend, which we are very excited about!I have decided that Oxford Castle needs to be reclaimed for the people of Oxford. It has beena bit neglected over the last few years. It’s beautiful and has great infrastructure. With theBig Bang here, it will have a soulful heart!

What events have you got coming up?Christmas will be crazy for parties, we also have Hogtoberfest coming up, check out thewebsite for more details soon.

What is the secret behind the perfect mashed potato?Cook it in the oven… Leave the skin on to bake all the delicious flavor in, take it out andthen scoop them out, add a little butter/milk if you want… Absolutely delicious!

ATOMIC BURGERSitting amongst the myriad of other dining distractions that Cowley Road boasts, Atomic Burger is a unique diningexperience.

Once you enter you will see why, essentially inside the décor is part of the fun, a throwback to the eighties, wheretoys and posters of all your favourite ‘icons’ like the A-Team hang from the ceiling and wall. At the back of therestaurant a screen runs 80’s music videos and movie and TV trailers, it’s all about the nostalgia.

At Atomic Burger you can eat a beef, veggie or chicken burger served at least 14 different ways; such as ‘Dead Elvis’style, with Swiss cheese, American cheese, bacon and onions or even ‘Boris Karloff’, with your choice of toppingscooked Frankenstein style.

Fancy a Forrest Gump burger, how about a Dolly Parton, or Johnny Cash, each is served with a free side order offries, salad, or onion rings. DV8’s favourite side were the ‘Sci fries’ (Garlic and Chilli).

If burgers aren’t your thing, they also serve hotdogs and smoky ribs, perhaps washed down with a sugar puffmilkshake or a ‘flaming atomic’ margarita? Oh did we mention you can also have Mr Whippy for desert, how cool isthat!

This ‘blast from the past’ retro styled burger joint offers ‘the best burgers in town’. Prices range from £6-£8.50including a drink for a main, DV8 highly recommends a visit.
