forewordMerry Christmas everyone, or if you prefer, SeasonsGreetings! Here at DV8, December signals the start of ourfavourite holiday, it's time to get ready for the famous fatguy in the red suit, scoff lots of mince pies and turkey anddrink enough mulled wine and bubbly to ensure we arepermanently merry! We hope you have all beenbehaving!.. Although in our experience the Decemberparty season seems to encourage a lot of misbehaviour. We have staggered through a lot of Christmas parties andhad more than our fair share of drunken kisses under themistletoe. Although, speaking from personal experiencehooking up at a Christmas party can be the best thing thatcan happen to you!

It's kind of crazy to think another year has gone by inOxford, so much has happened in the last twelve months. We have attended a lot (and we mean a lot) of fantasticevents, with too many to mention but a few! Ourfavourites have to be Oxford Fashion Week (be sure tocheck this out next year as we hear it is going to be biggerand better than ever before!), various events thrown bythe Oxford Retreat including their recent 5 year birthdaycelebrations (check out our review on page 08). We alsowelcomed some great new venues to the Oxford nightclubscene with Lola Lo and The Junction opening their doors, both becoming firm favourites with us here at DV8.

Enough time reflecting, time to look forward and thinkabout what we are going to do on those all importantsocial dates of Christmas and New Years Eve! If you’restuck for ideas, why not enter our NYE competition inassociation with the Living Room on p04.Whatever you end up doing, we hope you have fun, andwe look forward to seeing you next year, where we will beback, bigger and better than ever before!Love the DV8 Oxford Team xxx

After the recent closure of some of DV8’sfavorite Jericho hang outs, including theBig Bang and Bottega, we worried that oneof our most loved parts of the city hadtaken a turn for the worse. So, we havebeen relieved to see that there has recentlybeen the introduction of a couple of newshops to the area, and one of these is thelovely and inviting, Comfy Café.We have been keeping a close eye on thisnew addition, slowly watching the cafetake shape and we were really pleasedwhen it finally opened it’s doors at thebeginning of December. Offering a rangeof hot and cold beverages (bearing in

mind how cold it is, I think we will onlybe having the hot drinks!), delicioussnacks and treats and of course a place tosit, relax and catch up with friends (youcan think of this as Oxfords answer toCentral Perk), we have already beeneyeing up the sofa which we will be sittingon! This is a welcome addition to the Jerichoscene, and we will be making many afrequent visit to the cafe on all our longwalks between Jericho and the centre ofOxford (or maybe even to sober up a littlebit after having a cocktail in one of the finecocktail bars next door!

Anew restaurant is opening on the BotleyRoad. The One, which is located right nextto the train station is promising westerncuisines with a Chinese influence, thissounds delicious and we really can’t waitto go and try it out! The refit has takenquite a while to complete (a total of twelvemonths), but we are sure it has been worththe wait. The restaurant also boastsparking spaces, which for Oxford is abonus that is unheard of. The restaurant isbeing run by Raymond Chu, who alsoruns The Paddyfields on Hythe BridgeStreet, another one of our favourites, sothis is bound to be a hit!

OnThursday 24th November DV8were excited to attend The OxfordRetreat’s 5th birthday. The Retreat

is one of Oxford’s most loved bars and wehave enjoyed many meals and nights outthere (including last month’s fantasticcharity gig in aid of Oxford AirAmbulance). So we were looking forwardto another delightful night bought to usfrom the great staff at the Retreat, and wewere definitely not disappointed!

The party had an amazing Casino Royaletheme - with lots of eye-catching fancydress (including a number of wannabebonds and glamorous bond girls), 2 bands,a roulette table & croupier and evencanapés to tickle our tastebuds. Who couldask for a better end to the week? With freeentry and a complimentary Martini(shaken not stirred, naturally!) on arrival, everyone was in the party mood. We lovedour Martini and felt uber glam sipping it atthe bar! Later, we enjoyed trying our luckon the roulette table, which got quitecompetitive, adding to the thrivingatmosphere as more and more peoplejoined us. We really enjoyed listening tothe live music, which provided a coolsoundtrack to the evening and kept guestsentertained into the night. As we lookedaround at the dressed up partygoers, itcould really have been a scene from a bondmovie! The only thing missing was a visitfrom Daniel Craig…

We wish The Oxford Retreat a very happyanniversary and we hope that there aremany more years to come of awesomenights like this – it was like we felt famousin our own local, which is something youdefinitely can’t complain about! We lookforward to plenty more parties at theRetreat in the New Year!

DV8 are proud to be introducing the latest musictalent to hit Oxford – TRAPS! Rog (guitarist), Tim(bassist), Pete (drummer) and Alexis (leadvocalist) make up TRAPS (which you mightnotice is a nifty acronym of their names) andhave been hitting the music scene in and aroundOxford for the past couple of months. We wentto see them last month and really felt like wewere watching the beginning of somethingunique, we are looking forward to following theirprogress and eager to seewhat they get up to next! Weurge you to look out for themplaying in the new year asthey are definitely a band towatch out for. So far theyhave played a couple of localgigs, and are really starting tofeel at home on stage, theirlast gig saw them showcasedat the Bullington Arms onCowley road alongside such great local acts asdananananaykroyd who are the band’s hugeheroes. The band were really excited to beplaying alongside an act they have admired forso long and it really showed in their performancehow happy they were to be among such stars. When asking the band how they would describetheir distinctive style, Rog said ‘Our music is likePJ Harvey meeting Juliette and the Licks at themeat counter at a Waitrose…’…what acombination! We have to agree the banddefinitely boast an original sound which isnothing like what we’ve heard in Oxford and wepredict that their crowds will increase with eachgig. We were really impressed when we sawthem and especially loved the individual tone toLex’s voice. She sang with the passion and edgeof an already famous lead singer and didn’t lookdaunted by the screaming crowd. DV8 also lovedthe combination of Lex’s voice with Rog’s, thisbought a quirky element to the gig and madesure we were kept on our toes. If we had tocompare TRAPS to one of our favourite bands,

we would have to go for Paramore, although weare sure that TRAPS will bring forward analtogether more heavy and dynamic tone to theirmusic. We can only predict that TRAPS willconstantly surprise us at gigs to come!

TRAPS came together with a love of live music incommon and a desire to write songs that are realand heartfelt. This was obvious when we saw

them and we were reallylooking forward to being ableto sing along to their alreadyanthem-like tunes. Theirinfluences are huge andvaried, from Black Sabbath toDeath from Above 1979 andBjork. They are really happyto be playing in and aroundOxford which is where somany great acts have begun(Radiohead, Supergrass and

The Foals all began in and around Oxford). Whenasking TRAPS why they believe Oxford is such agood place to propel them into the spotlight ofthe music scene they said ‘The Oxford scene isso important and thriving against the currenteconomic pressures we all feel’..which is astatement we definitely agree with! We lookforward to seeing so much more from TRAPS,they have plans to finish their very first ep earlynext year and will be playing lots more gigsaround Oxford and London. Here at DV8 we areexcited to see what happens next!

SHENANIGANS17/11/11

After a brief hiatus, The LodgeGentlemen’s Club has returned toOxford. Located on the site of the

old Coven Club, it promises a roundedexperience for discerning ladies andgentlemen. So when we got the invite to goalong to the launch night we thought itwould be rude to turn it down.On entering, we were greeted by a coupleof attractive ladies offering a glass ofchampagne before moving into a roomseductively lit with muted lighting, swathed in red velvet with a long baroffering plenty of tempting drinks deals. Itwas clear that this was going to be anenjoyable evening.

Indeed the crowd was treated to somegreat performances and all of the girlsmade the most of the 16ft pole thatprovided a fitting centre piece to therevamped, impressive venue. It aims to bean ideal place to host birthdays, stag nightsand corporate entertainment and, fromDV8’s perspective, it is certainly goingabout it in the right way.

The venue is also looking to have a broadappeal beyond that of a traditionalgentleman’s club, aiming in particularly at

If like us, you did the majority of yourgrowing up in the nineties, then youwill have a great appreciation for the

music that came from the nineties! Some ofthe best anthems of all time came from thisdecade (there are so many to choose fromthat we found it hard to think of ourfavourite, perhaps Wonderwall by Oasis!)We were really excited to learn that TheJunction were opening up their Fridaynights to a night of live pre-millenniumanthems. All of our favourites were playedand it really took us back to rememberinghow awesome music used to be! Oh well, back to 2011 with a bang!

welcoming in the ladies, so we expect tosee burlesque nights and other suchevents. As it was, we got to see the lovelyValerie Vegas perform at midnight. Herexotic burlesque act with fans made ofblack feathers was certainly appreciated bythe crowd and capped off a great nightwhen the Lodge re-launched and goodtimes were had by all. If you are lookingfor a place to celebrate in style thisChristmas or New Years, then drop by theLodge, you won’t be dissapointed!

This year’s show was held in partnershipwith LK Bennett, a quintessentiallyEnglish, ‘accessible luxury’ brand, which isfavored by many celebrities and has beenthrust into the fashion spotlight as beingKate Middleton’s go-to brand for shoes. We here at DV8 are huge fans of Kate’selegant and classic style and have spottedher wearing leg lengthening wonder shoe‘Sledge’ at Royal Ascot and beautiful‘Agata’ at the Ark Gala dinner, Williamand Kate’s first official Royal engagementas a married couple.

The OFC UNICEF Fashion Show highlightwas a stunning 70s style red coat from LKBennett that the Duchess of Cambridgewore on her official visit to the UNICEFGlobal Supply Centre. DV8 OXFORD /// December 2011

We at DV8 really love ourcomfort foods, especially when itis so cold outside! And whatcould be better than tucking intoa delicious piping hot pie on acold winters day? We decided todrop by the Covered Markets,Pie Minister to sample some oftheir tasty looking pies. Just thesite of the pies in the shopwindow leaves our mouthswatering!

Pie and mash shops haverecently had a real resurgence, but this time around we are nottalking about the kind of piesyou get from the chip shop, butgourmet pies, using the finestfree-range and locally sourcedfillings. Pie Minister has beenleading the way for the past 8years in all things pie related! Ata first glance of their menu, thechoices are almost too hard tomake (you will probably note toyourself, as we did, a return tripis in order to sample them all!).

We opted for the Wildshroom &Asparagus Pie, a great

alternative for those vegetarianpie lovers out there, the pie isfilled with wild mushroom, asparagus, shallots, white wineand cracked black pepper. One ofthe best things about this pie wasthe rich creamy centre and itscontrast with the crisp pastryoutside, (no soggy bottomsaround here!) this was suitablyfilling and great value for money.

We also chose a pie with a classicbeef filling. The Moo Pie, whichis filled with British beef steak, real ale, fresh herbs and a richgravy. We had this with a side ofmash and peas, and of course anextra serving of gravy!

Next time you are in Oxford, it isdefinitely worth checking thisplace out, and the best thing is,you can buy pies instore to takehome and enjoy... Bliss!

Who doesn't love pizza? To behonest, here at DV8 it is one ofour favourite staples! However,do you sometimes get bored ofthe same old toppings? Are youlooking for something new?..

Well look no further, Fire & Stoneon George Street will take you onan around-the-world adventure, with toppings inspired fromevery content around the globe! Some of the toppings may sounda little bizarre at first, forexample who would havethought curry inspired food as apizza topping would work? Orwho would ever have imaginedputting roast potatoes on apizza? As strange as some ofthese combinations sound theyreally do work!

We decided to broaden our tastesa little by experimenting withsome of the more adventuroustoppings. First up we tried theKoh Sumui, this is a vegetarianpizza topped with Thai yellowcoconut sauce, roast sweetpotato, mozzarella, red chilli,

mange-tout and baby sweetcorn(like we said we were trying tobe adventurous!) This wasactually really delicious andreally filling, the unusualcombination came togethernicely to provide a tasteexplosion in the mouth. Secondup, we wanted a more meatinspired option so we opted forthe Texas! Topped with deliciousBBQ sauce, mozzarella and thatall important barbequed rumpsteak, with a welcome additionof onions, mushrooms andtomato salsa, this turned out tobe the pizza that dreams aremade of. Again the pizza wasreally filling and great value formoney.

The bar offers a range ofcocktails, wines and beers (and ofcourse soft drinks) as well as anextensive selection of starters anddesserts. To be honest we justopted for the pizza, however onour next visit we would happilygo the whole hog.

The low slung side bun is chic and quickto style. Virtually no styling products areneeded as it requires a “freshly washed”look for added texture and volume.Simply wash and rough dry the hairusing a hair dryer then sculpt the hairtowards the side of the neck. Loosely rollthe ends up and pin in for hold.Remember, this look is not aboutneatness, if a few strands fall, the better itwill look! Tease a few strands at the frontto frame and soften the face.

Plaits are still very popular but make itrelevant for the new season with a newway to style it. Cornrow a thick braid allthe way around the head for an etherealwinter goddess look. It looks hard but is,in actual fact, quite easy to do and hidesday old hair! Still reluctant to learn howto braid? Cheat by buying a braidedheadband.

POSERDDVV88meets Stan: A 25 year old car salesman, who is looking forward to christmas to seewhat he can unwrap this year!

What makes you a poser?Well, I love to talk to people, I guess it’s a big part of my job being in sales.

Describe yourself in three wordsTall, Tanned and terrific in bed! - Um we think that’s a few more than 3 words!

What is your ultimate hangover cure?Probably getting right back on it! After the first pint and a few cheeky shots, i’musually right back in the zone!

Where can we find you out and about on a Saturday in Oxford? It really depends, I’m pretty easy, and all my friends like to go to different places, sometimes, down the Cowley Road, sometimes, a club in town like Lava or No.9.as I said it really depends. I like to mix it up!

Christmas is here, what are you looking forward to most?I love Christmas and everything about it, presents, food, drink, friends andfamily... I especially love the gifts!

What is your ultimate chat up line? I heard this one the other day, and it made me laugh... I might even try it out!“Excuse me, miss, do you give head to strangers? No. Well, then, allow me tointroduce myself”.

If you spotted a lady on the dance floor, what moves would you use to impressher?Go straight over there, introduce myself and maybe offer to buy her a drink (orshot)

Are you a shots man? It’s the best way to get the night started (and sometimes ended!)
