Our MissionTo Provide Support, Advocacy and Education in order to improve the quality of life of individuals

with mental illnesses and their families.

NAMI DuPage, the DuPage County IL affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, for over 26 years has had an immense positive impact on the lives of individuals with mental illnesses and brain disorders and their families.

The largest NAMI affiliate in Illinois, and among the most creative and active of the 1,200 chapters across the United States, NAMI DuPage accomplishes its work without federal or state funding, and without direct finan-cial support from NAMI’s national and state organizations.

Moreover, all of our support and education programs for individuals and their families are free, so cost will not be an obstacle to support, education and recovery. We are able to achieve all that we do because of the re-markable, continuing generosity of our DuPage County community - individuals and households, foundations, businesses and corporations, professional groups, faith-based groups, and service clubs.

Board President NotesDear Friends, NAMI/DuPage maintained and even expanded our support and education programs to DuPage County during fiscal year 2011. During these difficult economic times when other non-profits are fighting for existence, NAMI/DuPage continued to plan and achieve a proactive agenda. This has been done through continued financial support from funders and donors, a dedicated staff led by our Executive Director and unselfish volunteers that make up the backbone of our organization. We are all working to create greater awareness about mental illness and to support individuals with mental illness and their families in DuPage County. I want to thank the Board of Directors and our committees for their continued stewardship. Most importantly I want to thank our donors for their financial support.

Howard A (Tony) DavisPresident, Board of Directors

Having the opportunity to share with you, through our annual report, NAMI DuPage’s 2011 accomplishments is both an honor and a privilege. In a year which for many will be remembered for its difficult economy NAMI DuPage has come through stronger and more resilient. While government funding has fallen short for many human service organizations it has also meant that new alliances have been formed in the local community, providing a feeling of togetherness not seen before. From these collaborations we have been able to better serve our community by identifying the gaps in support, education and advocacy that so badly need filling. NAMI DuPage has touched the lives of over 12,000 unduplicated individuals in 2011, a 58% increase since 2008. This accounts for over 27,000 free hours of support, advocacy and education that NAMI DuPage staff and volunteers have spent face-to-face with individuals. We have been able to increase support groups for individuals, family support groups and family education classes to a wider geographical area. Our influence is reaching far beyond those with mental illnesses and their families. Our relationships with all of the county’s behavioral health hospitals has increased, from in-

patient support groups and NAMI Nights with family members, to training hospital personnel from the perspective of the individual and family members. Police awareness and their outreach to NAMI DuPage to educate their officers and SWAT teams have dramatically increased since those first tentative steps back in 2004. Presentations to the community to increase awareness of mental illnesses at libraries, faith-based groups and corporations have all increased. Our school program is growing. NAMI DuPage believes, and research confirms, that the earlier the signs and symptoms of mental illnesses are diagnosed and treated the greater the recovery outcome. Our community school program has increased to thirteen high schools in DuPage County. Because of NAMI DuPage both students and teachers have a much better understanding of mental illness and the resources available. Advocacy is an ongoing daily part of NAMI DuPage. Speaking with local legislators has raised awareness and understanding of mental illness and the huge impact and devastation it can cause. We advocate for services to be provided for this often-vulnerable population. We advocate for individuals and become their voice when they are not physically fit enough to speak for themselves. We advocate and work on behalf of the families when they are simply in too much pain to do it for themselves. We celebrate through our annual Run Walk in September

and our Benefit in April. Both fundraisers saw increases in participation, volunteerism and funds raised, thus increasing the awareness of NAMI Dupage. The things we have been able to achieve this past year would have been impossible without the brave and talented volunteers who step up to become trained speakers, support-group facilitators and educators who are prepared share their stories, their time and their compassion with others. We thank you, our partners who support us and allow us to continue with this important work. While there have been major advances in some areas of mental health there is still much to be done. We have an ageing population, concerned about their loved ones and what will happen to them once their families are no longer able to support them. The goal for NAMI DuPage is for all individuals living in recovery to be able to do this in a home of their choice, to be able to work in a supported environment if they wish and to be accepted as contributing members of our community. We need you, our partners, to be able to continue this work. Together we can change lives a day at a time. With grateful thanks,

Angela Adkins Executive Director

NAMI DuPage believes in recovery through Support, Education and Advocacy.

R e c o v e ryMental illnesses are medical conditions, not character flaws, which disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood and ability to relate to others. Serious mental illnesses include major depression, obsessive-compulsive disor-der, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder.

With treatment, recovery is not only possible, it is probable. Most people who live with serious mental illness can reduce the impact of their illness and find achievement and independence.

A d v o c a c yNAMI DuPage, alongside the NAMI National and NAMI Illinois organizations, believes in advocacy and research. By supporting research, NAMI takes action to find causes, improve treatments and seek cures for psychiatric illnesses.

NAMI DuPage advocates on a daily basis on behalf of DuPage area individuals and their families in areas such as housing and supported employment. NAMI is also a reliable source of information and guidance on local, state and national political initiatives and legislation which can impact individuals with mental illnesses. For more legislative information - including past, present and future legislation - you can reference our Advocacy Toolkit at www.namidupage.org

NAMI DuPage Advocates for a Better Future

From our day-to-day dealings with families and individuals, it is clear that NAMI DuPage needs to advocate for:• Increased supported employment for those individuals living with mental illness;• Increased supported housing;• Increased peer-run organizations within the mental health system;• Respite care in place of lengthy Emergency Room waits that in many cases only accelerate the

symptoms and increase anxiety;• Increased use of peer advocates in Emergency Rooms;• Decreased use of nursing homes to house those with mental illness, and increased community mental

health services;• Treatment and understanding rather than punitive incarceration for individuals with mental illnesses;• Increased public education and awareness to reduce stigmatization of mental illness;• Increased early education in our schools on the signs and symptoms of mental illness;• Increased social and vocational opportunities for individuals living in recovery; and• Increased awareness of services needed for our returning veterans and their families.

As long as these challenges exist and new ones arise, the residents of DuPage County will have an extraordinary asset in NAMI DuPage - one that many other communities across the country can only dream of, and hope for.

I am forty years old and my journey with mental illness began when I was diagnosed with depression at the age of 19. After graduating from college my diagnosis evolved to bipolar disorder. I had a series of 20 jobs that I started with enthusiasm only to be consumed by anxiety which soon spiraled into depression. After turning 35 I finally found the hope that exists in an organization called NAMI. For me, the invaluable, life-altering messages of NAMI which I received, and which I passionately share with other consumers and their families, are the following:

• Mental illness is a biological disorder in which you cannot be blamed.

• You are not alone. • NAMI can help. • There is hope and support. • Things do get better!

In response to the barriers of guilt, shame, anxiety and depression which mental illness brings, NAMI offers opportunities for socialization, happiness, achievement and

recovery. Four years ago NAMI’s message of hope empowered me to begin co-facilitating a support group each week, first at Good Sam and now at CDH. As a trained NAMI speaker, I have shared my stories of mental illness countless times with high school students, medical students, health care professionals, and first responders. I also facilitate the eight-week ”W.R.A.P” class (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) for NAMI DuPage in which I help other consumers establish individualized recovery programs, in order to reduce or eliminate symptoms, and take back control of their lives. I have been blessed to be the husband of an amazing, loving wife and the father of three terrific boys. They allow me to laugh and smile, to feel happiness and pride, and make my best self available to them and to others. I have the normal concerns about life-long parental responsibilities as well as the added awareness that my children are genetically predisposed to mental

illness. However, I know the support and education I have received will help me guide them as well as constant reminders that I love them. Currently, I am working hard to find employment, and my real passion is for supporting and helping others just as NAMI has supported me. My volunteer work at NAMI helps me stay connected and continue on my journey of recovery, but until such time as I can find more stable employment, I live daily with the worry of how to provide for my family. These are difficult times to find work, and for those of us with mental illness, doubly so. NAMI has helped me recognize that this is a lifelong journey, but for all the ups and downs, I get great hope from knowing that I will always be a part of NAMI, and NAMI will be a part of my family’s life and my own. My journey of recovery truly began here at NAMI DuPage, as it has for many others, and as it will for so many more to come!

Some of our volunteer voices on, “what does it mean to me to be able to volunteer for NAMI?”

“Attending the Naperville “Family to Family” education course helped me get through a difficult time understanding and coping with my family member’s diagnosed mental illness. I came to realize what valuable information and resources NAMI has to share with families and the public in general and I decided I wanted to be part of such an outstanding organization with such dedicated people. My background has always been in business and administrative work, so helping out with office work suits me very well. I look forward to my weekly work at the NAMI DuPage office and I leave feeling satisfied that I’ve made a worthwhile contribution to others.” Pat

“To me, it means being able to help people by directing them to appropriate resources, staff and services. Also, it’s a privilege to work alongside a group of people whose goals and expectations are congruent to mine.” Chris

“My reason for volunteering at NAMI DuPage is two-fold: To

support a much needed local community resource; and to

express gratitude for the assistance NAMI provided me and my

family in our hour of need.” Tom

Page 11: DuPage County ·  · 2016-06-28NAMI DuPage, the DuPage County IL affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, ... make up the backbone of our organization. ... daily part

“Having the privilege to contribute in the database office

to a national, regional and local movement has given me

much fulfillment in joining with like-minded people in a

cause bigger than myself, and indirectly helping those with

mental illness as well as personally helping to educate

myself skill-wise and on mental illness.”

Nate

“It means giving the individual with mental illness the ability and opportunity to give back to NAMI, which always tries to give as much as it can to individuals and their families. You’re able to be a part of the NAMI Family!” Matt

“I feel like I have a purpose and that I am helping other people like me with mental illness. I’ve received lots of help from NAMI and more people deserve that opportunity.” Chrissy

“Being a volunteer at NAMI means helping others, helping

family members of individuals with mental illness who are

struggling. It also means being a part of something bigger, and

knowing I am helping make a difference.”

Anna

“I enjoy putting together the packets handed out to those who attend

NAMI classes and presentations because I know how beneficial the in-

formation in those packets is! Also, when I volunteer it’s great to inter-

act with the other volunteers. NAMI is a terrific organization!
