our creatiVe city we have a rich history of creativity, as harold Mitchell explains on page five, and we want to help creative and knowledge industries to thrive in the future.

council is embarking on a range of place-based initiatives that will enhance the existing vibrancy and strengths of the villages that make up our city.

the prompt steps to enable the stokehouse pop-up is an example of action that supports and involves local people, promotes employment and makes port phillip great.

we are continuing to advocate for early infrastructure in fishermans Bend, particularly ‘fishermans crossing’ – our name for the tram, walk and bike bridge that will connect the city to the bay by extending collins street over the yarra.

on carlisle street, we are working with traders, residents and community groups to positively tackle safety issues. a graffiti blitz is underway, while outdoor seats, street bins, paving and drainage have all been upgraded.

Meanwhile, on the port Melbourne waterfront, council is teaming with business and community to provide more information about local events, points of interest and historical facts to passengers arriving at station pier.

heritage controls aim to retain, conserve and enhance the historic built environment by ensuring that inappropriate demolition, modifications, additions or designs do not occur.

Creative industries in a creative cityanalysis of recent economic data by council reveals that creative industries account for one-third of local economic activity and generate $3.6 billion in value added to the local economy of port phillip.

local creative industries generate 12,700 jobs and contribute an additional 14,100 jobs through indirect employment.

creative industries supply 15 per cent of all employment in port phillip. that is higher than Melbourne (which is less than 5 per cent) and other inner city municipalities (9 per cent). port phillip accounts for nearly 13 per cent of Victorian creative industry jobs despite accounting for less than 4 per cent of total Victorian employment.

The changing face of creativitythe digital revolution has changed the scope of local creative employment. the latest data quantifies the importance of software and interactive content

development to local creative industries. there are over 5,000 direct local jobs in software and interactive content, representing over $1.8 billion in value. Much of this activity is now clustered around st kilda road, Queens road and parts of south Melbourne.

as part of home art project 2014, award-winning local company ranters theatre is working with community members in st kilda east to create three short performances in their own home. ranters will provide a professional artist to work with each person for four sessions to create and rehearse a unique performance. the works will be filmed and shown in a screening at theatre works. limited public tickets are available. the program is supported by council’s cultural Development fund.

filM sparks action on plastic wasteearly last year port phillip ecocentre Director neil Blake teamed up with american-born filmmaker Michael J lutman, who currently lives in st kilda, to create a film showing how microplastics are invading port phillip Bay.

Baykeepers, the recently released 25 minute film that tracks plastic pollution in the bay, is triggering action to prevent plastics entering waterways across Melbourne. the film is being screened at schools and community centres through the clean Bay coalition project.

in the old red tulip easter egg factory in fennell street, boardsports and streetwear company Globe international has livened up an industrial corner of port Melbourne.

the hill brothers – peter, stephen and current ceo Matt – founded Globe in Melbourne in 1984. the company now designs, manufactures and distributes their signature footwear, clothing and skateboards around the world.

after moving around a number of locations, the brothers settled on the port Melbourne factory four years ago for its old style brick facade, huge warehousing area and proximity to the city. the only things missing were a great short black and a beer after work. so they went about getting that set up too.

in one corner of the fennell street block the boys from the salford lads club brew coffee and bake eggs, while around the corner in Bertie street, Matilda Bay has a bar and working craft brewery.

later additions mean you can get a trim and shave at uncle rocco’s Barber shop and have your car tuned at 01 Motorsports.

Globe’s steve Douglas says, ‘port Melbourne is a great location for our staff. Quick transit times, ease of parking and the community we’ve built here in fennell street make for a very enjoyable and motivating work environment.’
