Issue 3 Term 3 Week 10 Wednesday 17th September 2014
Delroy Campus – Year 7 Transition Evening
From the Principal...
This term has seen many opportunities for students and staff to participate in and enjoy. Students have had the opportunity to
nominate for Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels. Receiving certificates, free lunches and the chance to attend the Gold Level
excursion in Week 4 of Term 4. This Term is the last chance to nominate for the Levels for 2014, so all students are
encouraged to get their forms signed by all of their teachers and place them in the boxes at the front office.
Our Dance groups have been asked by many schools and organisations to perform, which they have done with excellence. Congratulations to all of our Dancers.
This Term, we will be competing in many sports against South Campus in the Serisier Cup. Good Luck to all the competitors.
Moving into Term 4, we will have the Gold Level luncheon with Parents and Carers, transition activities for Year 6 into
Year 7 and Year 10 into Year 11, the Gold Level excursion in Week 4, exams, reports, sporting competitions and the Annual
Award Presentation Evenings to name a few events. So as you can see Term 4 is already a busy one giving students many
opportunities to participate and succeed.
Congratulations to Mr Doug Gordon who was asked by NAPCAN to attend the launch of National Child Protection Week in
Sydney last week. Doug was asked to be a part of this event because he was a recipient of the Play Your Part Awards in 2012
for his dedication and commitment to the cultural groups he organises at Delroy.
Just a reminder that due to many people having allergies to different things we need to ensure everyone’s safety therefore,
deodorant cans/aerosol cans are not allowed at school. Please help us support everyone who attends Delroy Campus and
respect this request.
VACCINATION INFORMATION: Wednesday 15th October 2014, Delroy students Years 7 to 10 Boys
and Girls to be vaccinated for Rubella, Mumps and Measles AND the Boys HPV Vaccination for Year 9 Boys.
ALL students need to return their forms to school by THURSDAY 18th September 2014.
Finally, I would like to say Thank You to the staff and students at Delroy for the support given to me whilst I have been in
the Principal’s chair. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday and I look forward to Term 4.
D = Do Your Best, E = Equipment,

The Year 9 Child Studies students have been studying a
unit on Child Care facilities. To help the students have a
greater understanding of a childcare setting, the students
have been to visit West Dubbo preschool, Good Start Early
Learning Centre and West Dubbo Infants school Preschool.
All the venues are different in what they offer, and have
taught the students about how a centre runs, the activities
that children do and what is expected of staff. All students
have shown great enthusiasm and initiative with the
children from all the centres, helping the children with art
and craft activities, imaginative play, reading books and
playing with playdough.

Students touch base with world-class scientist
Students enrolled in Xsel, the virtual selective school providing a selective curriculum to students in Dubbo and across
Western NSW, were told to follow their passion when they talked face-to-face with world-class scientist Chris Cassell via
video-link to Milan in Italy recently.
The former Parkes High School student is a post-graduate nuclear physicist specialising in radiation detectors, who is
currently based in Italy at the Polytecnico de Milan.
Mr Cassell has also worked at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland as part of his research in detecting stray hadron
beam radiation.
The video-link was organised by Mr Cassell’s former maths head teacher and current Xsel technology officer Jay Quince.
“Chris talked to our students about radiation, the atom, nuclear physics, safety and life as a scientist,” he said.
“He managed to convey the importance of following your passion in life and that’s an important message for our students because many of them are interested in pursuing university studies in science and engineering.
“It was good for them to see that it really is possible to move from a country community like Parkes or Dubbo and
ultimately work as part of the world scientific community.
“Chris is a tremendous role model for our students because he has travelled throughout the world to complete research and
present the results of that research.”
After completing his Higher School Certificate at Parkes High School in 2007, Mr Cassell studied at the University of
Wollongong, completing a degree in nuclear physics.
He has spent the past two years researching and developing radiation testing equipment in Milan and is currently studying for his PhD in physics.
“Our students and staff were very impressed with his presentation, even though we had to schedule the link quite late at
night here to match in with early morning in Milan,” Mr Quince said.
“The main aim of the activity was to raise awareness of science, technology, engineering and mathematics as prospective
careers for students.”
Dubbo College Xsel students Ashwini Manorathan,
Delroy Campus Xsel students Chayan Deb Nath and Jacob Ware talk with
Milan-based scientist Chris Cassell on video-link.

HSIE Happenings…... This Term seems to have flown so quickly, with the holidays already knocking at our
door. During the past Term, Year 7 have been looking at all aspects of Ancient Egypt. There is a lot of interest in the culture, traditions and experiences of people’s lives
during this time. Year 8 have been studying Global Issues. A lot of these issues are a
part of our everyday lives and the students are becoming more aware of the world
around them. Year 9 are currently looking at Natural Disasters throughout the world
and in particular those that happen here in Australia. Australian Migration is holding
Year 10’s interest this Term and with an assessment task due, they have really been
busy.
I hope you all enjoy the holidays and come back in Term 4 rested and ready to learn more.
