The faces of service

Ohio Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of college and university presidents and their campuses working to promote the civic purposes of higher education. Our mission is to provide statewide leadership in mobilizing resources, services and partnerships that help Ohio colleges and universities fulfill their civic missions.

✬ Ohio’s colleges and universities are more engaged in service to communities, thanks to Ohio Campus Compact’s grants, training and service initiatives. For nearly 20 years, Ohio Campus Compact has been a leader in promoting civic engagement and public service in campus and academic life. We invite you to learn more about our most recent successes and meet a few of the many dynamic students, faculty, VISTA members and campus community service directors that work tirelessly every day to connect campuses with communities. Together, we’re creating powerful partnerships focused on service to our communities and our country.

Lydia Lee-Mosley, a student at Lorain County Community College, received the prestigious National Inspirational Leadership Award for her outstanding leadership, service, and dedication to her community and country as part of the Ohio Campus Compact’s M3C (Midwest Campus Compact Citizen-Scholars) program. Lydia mentored students in LCCC’s Early College High School program, worked with Save Our Children, and served as vice president on LCCC’s Student Senate, where she created and expanded community-based programming for students and community members alike. Lydia did all this while going to school full time, working two part time jobs, and raising a child with her husband.

Engage We engage campuses

in service to the community..

Our Students in Service, M3C Fellows and AmeriCorps*VISTA programs strategically connect college resources with communities in need. Participants gain valuable experience and educational awards. Campuses expand their civic outreach. And community partners receive critical support.

Our Service Program Impact by the numbers:

• 157 first generation, low-income students on 16 campuses earned $177,724 in AmeriCorps educational awards for 28,796 hours of service benefiting communities through our Midwest Campus Compact Citizen Scholar (M3C) Fellows Program.

• 75 students at seven member campuses dedicated more than 22,500 hours of volunteer service and earned a total of $84,900 in AmeriCorps educational awards as part of our new Students In Service program.

• 15 VISTA Summer Associates spent ten weeks working in local communities on innovative food security projects.

• 34 VISTAs dedicated a year of their lives to help local community groups to fight hunger, homelessness, illiteracy, joblessness and other poverty-related issues.

This is what a year of campus-based VISTA work can do:

Ohio Campus Compact VISTAs leveraged: • 31,315 students who served as community volunteers

• 258,520 service hours performed by community volunteers

• $665,896 = Dollar value of cash resources developed by VISTA Members

• $196,144 = Dollar value of NON-cash resources developed by VISTA Members

“Fight Poverty with Passion” isn’t just a catchy slogan on AmeriCorps* VISTA promotional posters. It also aptly describes the work of Heather Eichner, an Ohio Campus Compact VISTA serving at the University of Mount Union. Heather focuses on combating hunger and improving food security in her community. Her myriad efforts culminated in the creation of a new community pantry that serves thousands of Alliance families. Heather has worked on campus and in the community to recruit dozens of pantry volunteers---a majority of which are also pantry clients. “Launching a new non-profit organization comprised of many different existing organizations working to end hunger in our community is no small feat. I don’t know how we would have done this as effectively without Ohio Campus Compact VISTA Heather Eichner.” --Matt Stinson, founding board member of the Alliance Community Pantry

About Ohio Campus Compact Service Programs

The Ohio Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA Program places and supports VISTAs who create and expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. VISTAs serve in the poorest areas of their communities to tackle poverty-related problems such as hunger and homelessness, financial literacy, veteran student services, public health and college access.

The Midwest Campus Compact Citizen Scholar (M3C) Fellows Program supports cohorts of predominantly low-income and/or first generation college students who receive a $1,132 AmeriCorps education award for tuition or loans in return for 300 hours of community service.

Students in Service (SIS) is a part-time AmeriCorps program that supports college students in providing valuable service to their local communities. Students in Service members make a difference in their communities, gain valuable civic and workforce skills, and earn a $1,132 education award.

invest

"The Pay it Forward grant from Ohio Campus Compact allowed me to marry my love for teaching and my passion for philanthropy. It was amazing to witness how both teaching and learning alike, in this course, was so different than any regular business class. The students were more engaged, and the learning was more meaningful. Not only were the students able to study management, but they learned about themselves and what makes us all human, and somehow connected. They found out that they can truly impact another's life through the fidelity of a worthy cause. That, to me, is the greatest gift from this journey of discovery."

- Dr. Shirine Mafi, Professor of Management Otterbein University

We invest in civic engagement on our member campuses. Our innovative Pay it Forward student philanthropy grants provide funds to service-learning courses which engage students in charitable giving and service to the local community. Meanwhile, our MLK Challenge Grants support campus projects that heed Dr. King’s call to community service. These and other programs provide meaningful educational opportunities while also directing resources to Ohio communities that need it the most.

We invest in good ideas.

Our Campus Grants’ Impact by the numbers:

Martin Luther King Jr. Challenge Grants • Supported 36 service projects on nine member

campuses. These projects engaged 990 volunteers who provided a total of 2,155 volunteer hours to serve local communities in honor of MLK.

Pay it Forward Student Philanthropy Grants • Supported 26 Pay it Forward mini grants for

student philanthropy courses on 14 campuses • 739 students participated in Pay it Forward service-learning courses, providing a total of 12,934 service hours to the community.

• Invested $117,000 in grants to local nonprofits • 74% of students plan to volunteer or engage in

philanthropic activities throughout their lifetime after taking a Pay it Forward course —compared to just 48% before taking the course/a 46% increase from the beginning of the course.

• As a result of taking Pay it Forward course, 86% of students believe they can make a difference within their community.

“This [Pay it Forward] course has helped me want to give back to my community in any way that I can, whether that is by volunteering my time or donating money. I have learned to love giving back and will continue to do so.”

About Ohio Campus Compact Grant Programs

The Pay it Forward program is developing a new generation of philanthropists through an innovative course-based service-learning program that engages Ohio college students in hands-on philanthropy, grant-making, and volunteer service while providing community nonprofits with needed assistance during the economic downturn. Faculty infuse the study of philanthropy as a core component of the discipline’s coursework and each student provides at least 15 hours of volunteer work with a nonprofit agency as part of the course. Each course receives $4,500 dollars to award to nonprofits based on the funding guidelines developed as part of the coursework. Our new survey data illustrate how the Pay it Forward program has been a tremendous success for students, faculty and nonprofits. Martin Luther King Challenge Grants provide funds for campus-based MLK Day service projects…with a twist. For the Challenge, groups are determined on a random basis and are assigned a specific service challenge. With basic instructions, a goal and deadline, the groups must use creativity and teamwork to serve the local community.

• Representatives from 32 campuses participated in our December 2010 Civic Engagement Symposium, “Emphasizing Unity in Community”

Jason Bricker-Thompson, Director of Civic Engagement at Hiram College, is a founding board member of the Hiram Farm Living and Learning Community, an organization serving adults on the autism spectrum in Northeast Ohio. “Thanks to assistance from Ohio Campus Compact, Hiram College has developed a sustained collaboration with this unique organization sharing diverse resources with the farm, including a grant from Ohio Campus Compact’s Pay-It-Forward student philanthropy program, the establishment of a community garden, and the development of a food access program that educates about poverty and provides fresh, local, organic produce to an area food bank from the farm.”
