NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Sarah Mitchell visited Dubbo College Delroy Campus last week to meet with the students and staff of the Girls’ Academy.

The Premier and Minister were warmly received at Delroy with a traditional Wiradjuri welcome by Aunty Di McNaboe, supported by Aboriginal students and staff.

Among those welcoming the parliamentarians were Relieving Director Educational Leadership, Macquarie network Ms Adelia Fuller, Dubbo College Executive Principal Stacey Exner, Delroy Principal Debbie Head, South Campus Principal Suzie Foran and Senior Campus Principal Andrew Jones, as well as Girls Academy regional manager Louise Lawler.

The Premier met with Girls Academy staff and spent time talking with students about the benefits of being part of the academy.

The ‘Power of Engineering’ Workshops Charles Sturt University’s School of Engineering hosted the ‘Power of Engineering’ workshops again in Bathurst on the 17th August. Twenty-three girls from Delroy Campus travelled to the university to take part in the activities run by engineers working in industry. The aim of the day was to inspire young women to consider a diverse and creative career in the profession of engineering. This was achieved through a series of workshops where the girls engaged in three different activities during the day that gave them an insight into the diversity and breadth of engineering in our society. CSU nurtures the problem solvers of tomorrow, with their Engineering courses having an emphasis on team work, communication and problem-solving with collaboration. Why target young women? Only 15% of the world’s engineers are women and the ‘Power of Engi-neering’ organisation, who supported the workshops believes that the world’s engineering solutions will come from the diversity within groups of people. As women are under-represented, their aim is to encourage more young women to consider careers in engineering. Engineers working in industry led the practical workshops. They also shared their journeys with the girls of how they became interest-ed in wanting to study Engineering and how their pathway was forged into their chosen area of the industry. The keynote speaker this year was Ruth Guest, a Mechanical Engineer who now works for Australian Energy Market Operator. Ruth’s engineering role requires her to predict electricity supply and demand in the Eastern and Southern States of Australia. She also plans for how electricity will be transmitted as demands increase and technology changes. Ruth wears a business suit to work and travels by train to her office in the centre of Sydney. Very different to her hard hat and overalls she wore to her first engineering position on an oil rig in the North Sea off Great Britain. Ruth demonstrates that engineering is a very flexible career which provides job opportunities in diverse roles. College and Delroy Band Tour On Monday 27th August the College Band performed for both Wongarbon and Geurie Primary Schools, aiming to excite the students for high school with band opportunities, and to provide our students with the opportunity to showcase how amazing they are. (Showing off a little). On the Tuesday, South and Delroy Campuses separated, and Delroy performed for the whole of West Primary. The atmosphere was thrilling and all students performed at a really high level. Overall, the tour was a huge success for Delroy and the College, with the students performing and observing and getting a lot out of the days. Miss Brooke Tonks Music Teacher

Principal’s message…. Once again we have had an exciting few weeks at Delroy Campus as you will notice in our current newsletter. So many opportunities to be had at Delroy. We were very excited to welcome the NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Sarah Mitchell and other guests to our school last week. These distinguished guests were here to meet with our Girls Academy students and staff. The Premier spoke with our girls and was very impressed with their conversation and all the opportunities they have been offered and the positive impacts these programs have had on their schooling. Thank you to Mrs Justice who recently accompanied Delroy students to the Power of Engineering Workshops at CSU Bathurst. Twenty three of our girls took part in the activities run by engineers working in the industry. The workshops were held to encourage young women to consider engineering as a career. Our College Band students have been out and about with Delroy’s music teacher, Miss Tonks, visiting and performing for primary students in the area. The band was excellent and impressed many of the students who are looking forward to joining the College Band when they get to high school. The Delroy Campus Art Exhibition is still open at the Sun Corp Bank, it is such a wonderful opportunity for everyone to see some of the great work our students and staff do at Delroy. Congratulations to our latest Customer Choice Award recipient, Dayna Weir Year 10 Delroy Campus. Congratulations to all the students who took part in the various Sporting events this term, well done to all those students, some very commendable results and great sportsmanship from the teams and individual efforts. We thank the STRIVE students for all the delicious goodies they prepare each fortnight for the Homework Centre at Delroy. The staff and students look forward to trying all the new, tasty and interesting delights presented for the afternoon tea. Our Year 9 and Year 10 Textiles students are looking awesome in their garments they made recently. Looking very on-trend in their Kimono inspired jackets, well done girls. Our Clontarf students recently had a very exciting and interesting excursion to Sydney where they experienced an amazing visit to the Sydney GOOGLE headquarters and other points of interest around Sydney. As I mentioned, opportunities abound at Delroy Campus and we look forward to next term’s activities and opportunities. Thank you to staff and students for an excellent but somewhat busy term 3. CAPA Report On the 10th September Year 10 Visual Arts Elective students had the privilege of attending their very own art exhibition held at the Suncorp Bank Dubbo. The exhibition is the third of four exhibitions that Suncorp have kindly arranged for Delroy. The exhibition contains works the students completed throughout terms 1, 2 and 3. This includes works based on Rhythms and Cycles, Frames in Art and Elements of Sculpture. Although a small group, the students have managed to fill the Suncorp Bank with lots of colour, exploration pieces and assessment works. Dubbo College Principal, Mrs Stacey Exner, Dubbo College Delroy Campus Principal, Mrs Debbie Head and Dubbo Council Representative, Ms Vicki Etheridge were part of the crowd supporting our students at the Opening of the Exhibition. It’s great to see so much support! Suncorp Bank kindly donated a $50 Kaiser Kraft voucher to one of the artist’s from each exhibition. So far Brielle Lord (Year 8) and Dayna Weir (Year 10) have had the delight of winning this great prize. To win, the public make a choice on which artwork is their favourite and vote. Also known as the ‘Customer’s Choice Award’. We encourage everyone to go and have a look and support the students of Delroy.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge

Australian Hockey goal keeper, Ash Thomas recently visited Dubbo College Delroy Campus. He delivered a motivational speech to some Year 7 and 8 classes as a Premier’s Sporting Challenge ambassador. He talked about the importance of healthy eating, resilience and setting personal goals. Throughout Terms 2/3 students in 7A, 8A and 8W participated in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge where they recorded their physical activity levels over a 10 week period. Strive Class Scoop While we are nearing the end of term (and the holidays are in sight), it is a very busy time for students in the Strive Class who are in the midst of their term assessments. Students have already completed their PDHPE Examina-tion (in Week 7), and their Geography Work Booklet and Science Pamphlet are due at the end of Week 8 (14/9/18). Students will be presenting their speech for English at the end of Week 9 (21/9/18) and will sit their End of Term 3 Examination for Maths during Week 10. To prepare for their remaining assessment tasks, students are encouraged to regularly revise the work covered in class. The Maths exam will include material covered in the Equations; Linear Relationships; Pythagoras’ Theorem; and Geometry topics. Students will also need to ensure that they bring a calculator for this exam. In Science, students have been exploring organ systems. The associated photos show students completing a chicken wing dissection to explore how the muscular and skeletal system works. As you can see by the photos, students were engaged in this activity, which allowed them to explore how muscles and tendons work to create movement. Our Geography studies Water in the World has provided a lot of opportunity for students to connect with their real world experiences. The drought has provided the topic for many conversations, and students are integrating the knowledge gained in this subject to deliver a speech in English exploring how we can better conserve and manage our water. Punctuated through the study of the core subjects are additional lessons that are Strive specific. Students continue to complete Initiative Games lessons, which allow them to develop a range of employability and social skills in a hands-on way. Class Project takes place once a fortnight with students catering afternoon tea for Home-work Centre (last week we provided Bacon and Egg Bread Baskets, and Lemon Coconut Slice). This project is made possible through the continued support of Woolworths Delroy Park who sponsor this program. As this is the final newsletter for the term, I would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday period, and look forward to next term. Year 9 and Year 10 Textiles Apparel Project Year 9 and 10 Textiles students at Delroy have just submitted their practical project for this term. The students completed a case study on Textiles Arts in Japan, focussing on the Kimono. Students were then to design and construct a wearable garment that was a contemporary take on the Kimono. Students worked hard creating a variety of designs. Their projects are accompanied by a detailed Design folio that shows the Design Process that they have followed.

Delroy Boys Get Googled Wednesday the 5th of September 2018 a group of eight very excited Clontarf students ventured to Sydney. The trip was primarily arranged as a partner visit with Google, however, throughout the duration of the trip other fantastic activities and experiences had been ‘jammed in.’ After arriving in Sydney around 4:00pm on the Wednesday afternoon, the boys disembarked the Clontarf bus and headed to the Woolwich Wharf. It was from here that we caught a ferry to historic Cockatoo Island to find our camp site. The boys spent a large part of the afternoon exploring the island and learning about its history since colonisation. We also quickly became aware that Cockatoo Island is one of Australia’s largest seagull rookeries and is home to thousands of nesting seagulls. At night the Island is quiet and peaceful (except for the seagulls). The next day we woke early and began our trip into Google HQ. The first leg involved a ferry, followed by a stroll through Barangaroo and Darling Harbour. Our experience was organised for 11.00am and we arrived with a little time to spare after using Google Maps to find our way. The day was expertly organised by Sanjay at Google and we had a Q&A session with a group of ‘Googlers’, a game of touch followed by lunch and a tour of the offices. The boys were in heaven, they asked great questions and were buzzing after seeing the virtual reality room, cinema, band room, games room and all you can eat buffet for lunch! We finished the day off with some shopping, a 2 metre pizza and some laser tag before getting back on the ferry to Cockatoo Island. A big thank you to Google who were so welcoming and let the boys know all the different jobs that are available. It was a real eye opener and got us all talking about university and life after school. An opportunity and an experience that we will never forget. Mr Michael Lee Clontarf

From dancers, to vocalist, from musicians to circus acts, we are raising the bar this year, aiming for the best year yet! Judging will be provided by staff and students from all year groups, with the exhausting job of announcing the winner of 2018 Delroy's Got Talent.

Parents and carers are most welcome, in fact, if you don’t come, disappointment will surround you, as you realise what you have missed out on! So come on Delroy, I need your acts, I need your judgmental supportive criticism, and I need your positive cheer!
