School Review To help Queensland state schools continue to lift their performance and improve outcomes for students, tailored school reviews were introduced in 2015 and conducted by the School Improvement Unit. The reviews replace the teaching and learning audits and will ensure that every school gets the support it needs. Every state school, including independent public schools, will be reviewed at least every four years. Our school will have our school review in the last week of this Term (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). This will be perfect timing as we will use the findings of the review to assist us in determining the direction and focus areas for our school to concentrate on over the next four years. Reviewers will interview staff, students, parents, local schools, P&C, our State and Federal Member of Parliament to assist them gain a full picture of our schools context, strengths and opportunities for improvement. Father’s Day Stall before school This Week This year our Father’s Day Stall will be held in the Uniform shop area BEFORE school between 8:15-8:45am on Monday 29 August, Tuesday 30 August, Wednesday 31 August, Thursday 1 September and Friday 2 September. It is hoped that parents may like to assist their students with their purchases. Assistance to serve at the stall is required and will be most appreciated. Students wishing to purchase gifts are asked to bring their money on one of these mornings to the Uniform shop area before school. This week’s writing focus in classrooms is Tighten Tension.

After our sizzling starts (interesting introduction) we must make the reader believe our hero will fail, the cyclone will destroy everything, the bad guy will win. However through determination, luck, and teamwork our hero wins. If it is a persuasive writing piece we are looking not just to state the facts but to build momentum, starting strong but saving our best argument till last. We often refer to this buildup of tension through our ideas as pebbles, bricks and boulders with the ideas getting bigger and more exciting as our writing progresses.

How can I help my child? Next time you watch a movie, cartoon or read a chapter analyse it together to see how the tension and excitement grows. This will help reinforce to children what Tightening Tension means. Take it one step further and write a paragraph together. Make your own scenario up, e.g. a scuba diver searching for a treasure chest. Attendance This term our attendance rate has been dropping after what was a great start to the year. Our aspirational goal is 95%, our current year attendance overall is 92.7%. Unfortunately with winter we do have an increase in colds, flus and sickness. Every day at school counts, please support us in ensuring students attend every day they are well including the last day of school this term.

P&C Meeting Our last P&C meeting for the term will be held on Wednesday 14 September. Please come along at 6:30pm, everyone’s ideas and support are welcome. Our Country Fair is in week 2 Term 4 so finalising the planning of this event will be a priority. Country Fair – Many Hands Make Light Work Week 2 Term 4 We need parents to assist to make this event run smoothly. If you haven’t been able to assist this year this opportunity is for you. Lots of volunteers are required so please register your availability with the office 54998333 or come to our next P&C meeting Wednesday 14 September. Thank You to Maleny C&K and Goodstart Early Learning Centre Last week our Prep teachers Mandy Bauer, Lindy Hicks, and myself visited the C&K Maleny Community Kindergarten and the Maleny Goodstart Early Learning Centre for two evening meetings. We discussed with parents our philosophies of the Early Years and the transition program that we deliver to ensure students feel comfortable, confident and familiar with their future Prep environment. If you missed these please ensure you have enrolled your child for Prep so that they are eligible to attend our Welcome to Prep Transition Days.

2017 Classes

Class Preference Forms Due in by Week 3 Term 4

Please ensure you have completed a class preference form in writing by 20 October 2016 if you would like us to

consider any educational reasons about the placement of your children in 2017. I remind parents that we are a

relatively small school and most year levels have two full class cohorts. This does not allow for a great deal of

flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for. Our staffing formula is based on student day 8

2017 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2017 Prep students enrol now, also if families are leaving

next year it is crucial they alert us now. All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made to

benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and a lot of time is put into making

classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional,

students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests. Sorry late

requests from parents will not be able to be considered. (Forms can be collected from the office)

Maleny High School Transition

Yr 6 students will transition to the Maleny High School on the following dates.

Monday, 7 November & Tuesday, 8 November.

Parents will need to make arrangements for students to get to and from the Maleny State High School on these

days.

Regional Athletics

Congratulations to Kaitlyn, Isabella, Tamika, Jared, Joshua, Kyan and Max who will represent the Glasshouse District

This Week’s Rule: SWPBS - This week we are continuing to focus on the rule Be Responsible. The 4 Be catch phrase is “Quiet Feet, Quiet

Mouths”

Week 9 & 10 Rule: Be a Learner

Fortnightly Focus: Bounce Back

Building resilience is the ability to adapt well to adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or even significant sources of stress. We need to help our children manage stress and feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.

Have a Magic week in Maleny. John

From the Deputy Principal Writing: In the last Familygram I included information about helping your child with their writing at home. The following article provides some more ideas on ways you may be able to assist your children with their writing. How you can help at home: Support your child with these writing strategies. by: GreatSchools Staff | March 18, 2016 Be a writing role model Make sure your child sees you as a writer. Point out times that you use writing to communicate with others. Discuss authentic writing in the community such as articles and letters in the newspaper, on billboards or in written advertisements. Discuss the purpose of the writing and the target audience. When your child writes, you should write. You can schedule a day of the week that you will turn off the television and share your writing. Start a vocabulary notebook Teach your child new words each week and encourage him/her to use them. Make it into a game and give points for using the new words. Your child can keep a vocabulary notebook and get rewarded for the number of new words learned. The words will begin to appear like magic in his/her oral language and writing. Ask questions Always ask your child questions when he/she writes. Ask specific questions about your child’s writing such as: “How did that happen?” “How did that make you feel?” “Can you tell me more about that…?” “What are some other words you could use to describe…?” Help your child publish their writing Share their writing with others, place it on the refrigerator or encourage them to write for children’s magazines. When your child’s writing is published into ‘a book’, they will be on their way to becoming a lifelong writer and author. ICAS Testing: ICAS Writing Results

Classroom News News from Year 4

We have just completed our oral presentation of our historical recount where the students

have revealed their experiences and feelings as a convict, a child of a surgeon or an

Indigenous person at the time of the First Fleet.

This week we have been enjoying reading our quest novel, Rowan of Rin. We have been

looking at the personality traits of the different characters and how they cope with

challenges.

We are now focusing on the writing strategy of Show Don’t Tell. The students have selected

an emotion and completed a paragraph on a scenario which should create a picture in the listener’s head.. The rest

of the class then must guess which emotion it is. Anika wrote ‘ A tear trickled down my face. I looked at Mum and

fell to the ground. I hugged Dad and sat there in silence. I never thought this would have happened to Mum this

early.’ - Depressed. Mathew R wrote ‘As she walks past, my eyes half close and my face curves’ – Lovestruck.

In Health we are finishing off our Venn diagrams on etiquette and customs of our chosen country. The students are

creating very informative PowerPoints to share with their peers.

In Science we have continued to explore the properties of different materials. When looking at the properties of

metals we are using words like conductive, malleable, reflective and magnetic. We have also looked at the

properties of different fabrics and completed an absorbency investigation.

In Technology we have been looking at digital and waste footprints and the children have been using excel

spreadsheet software to present data.

Kind Regards, Lou, Jodie and Trish

Year 5 Periscope Play Last week the Yr 5 classes were investigating mirrors and reflection using periscopes. We constructed our own periscopes out of cardboard and mirrors. To make the periscope work we had to make sure that the angles of the mirrors were correct (about 45°). 5A enjoyed spying on Miss Desley in the office and out the window while it was raining. A Periscope is a piece of equipment used to see other people without them seeing you. It was used in the war so that soldiers could see what was happening from their trenches.

Cybersafety Web Conferences for Students Cybersafety Web Conferences for students (parents welcome to attend) Over the next 2 weeks Maleny State School Year 4 – 6 classes will be participating in 2 x 45 minute state-wide web conferences (online). The sessions will be conducted by a trainer from the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner. The aim of the Office is help young people have safe, positive experiences online and encouraging behavioural change where a generation of Australian children act responsibly online - just as they would offline.

eSafety 'Being a good bystander' 31 Aug 09:00 - 09:45 The presentation will assist students to consider the impact of their actions when posting photos and comments, be ‘good’ bystanders if they witness cyberbullying, discuss appropriate actions when being a good bystander. eSafety classroom: Cyberbullying

07 Sep 09:00 - 09:45 The presentation will assist students to identify ways to manage and prevent cyberbullying behaviour, seek support if they are experiencing cyberbullying, be ‘good’ bystanders if they witness cyberbullying, recognise bullying online, and deal with cyberbullying behaviour. Parents are also invited to attend in the school hall if they wish to learn as well. Over time more session will be scheduled in around the various topic

under the Cyber-safety theme. If you can’t make it there is a wealth of information available online via the Office’s iParent support website.

“Let’s face it, the internet is an integral part of young people’s lives. Used responsibly, the online environment is a great place for our children to socialise and maintain friendships, be entertained, download and watch music and movies, play games, to search for information and to learn.

The ever changing nature of the internet can pose challenges for parents who wish to keep on top of their children’s technology use. While children might seem to be tech savvy, they still need a parent’s guiding hand to help make sure their online experience is positive and safe.”

Innovation Centre News Year 4s STEAM Cup Challenge Recently the Year 4 boys have been challenged with a plastic cup challenge. Considered a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) challenge children are tasked with building a plastic cup tower. However, it is not as simple as that. Children must work in teams and are restricted in some way. We have done 2 versions. The first, where students are not allowed to touch the cup with any part of their bodies, is explained in this teacher’s blog post (https://thewaterlilyway.wordpress.com/2014/02/25/team-building-activity-tower-of-cups/ ). They only have a rubber band and some string to work with. The second version is where children can touch the cups but ONLY with the tip of their pointer finger of 1 hand. All four students must be touching a cup to lift it. It’s harder than you think! There are many different versions of this game (do a search for STEAM cup tower challenges online and you’ll find lots) and is a great wet weather activity. Scratch Coding

Both Yr 3 and Yr 5 are currently working on Scratch computer coding activities. Both year levels have different challenges to work through. It is amazing to see just how well many students have taken to this coding/ programming to solve various problems. This program is free and available to be used on home computers if your child is interested in developing their skills even further. I previously mentioned a link on our school website that showcases Scratch which highlights what Scratch is, where to get it from, links to activities online and well and some other media around it. Chappy News When Things Go Wrong Who do we blame when things go wrong? How do we respond in the midst of affliction? There are so many questions with no answers, so what do we do when a problem presents itself that doesn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason? Quite often as a Chaplain, I am confronted with people’s pain and questions. But as we all know, life is very rarely easy. What I have come to see though is that there is room for growth and there is room to love and support one another. If life were easy, how little we would appreciate things when times were good. We still have a choice about how we respond in the midst of difficulty and affliction and it is a discipline to choose to look at the good in everything. Today I encourage you to come alongside someone you know who is hurting and be the person to say one kind word, provide one cooked meal, give one big hug, make one quick phone call or buy one bunch of flowers. Show you care even when you don’t feel like it. You never know what a difference your one action could make in the life of another. UPCOMING CAMPS… Please see me if your child would like to be involved in the next holiday camp. I will be leading a camp in Beerwah during the first week of the school holidays. It will be a day “camp”. The cost is $15 per day and will include lunch, craft activities, messy games, stories and much more.
