Mail delivery by droneAustralia Post is already trialling the delivery of small parcels and mail weighing up to 2 kgs direct to a customer’s door by remotely piloted drones. The prsent trial, which includes delivering parcels to 50 locations twice a week are presently being carried out in Sydney, however, when the system is developed it is in more likely to be used in rural areas where customes are more widely dispersed.

The drones are fitted with a parachute, eperb and high definition camera and warning lights to be used in the case of a malfunction of the drone. When the drone arrives at the delivery location the load is lowered to ground by a wire attachen to the drone.

Just another step to workplace automation.

Mt Beerwah strikes againAt about 3.30p.m. on Friday April 5th, Emergency Services were alerted to a serious incident on Mt. Beerwah where two climbers had become una-ble to complete their climb because one of the climbers had a suspected leg fracture which had resulted from a fall.

Initially a rescue attempt by helicop-ter was ruled out because of poor weather in the vicinity of the inci-dent. Emergency Service personnel from Police, Ambulance and Fire and Rescue subsequently were able to bring the two climbers back down the mountain. One climber was taken to the Caboolture Hospital in a stable condition whilst the other suffered no injuries.

Maleny Rotary prepares for 2017 calendar

The Maleny Rotary Club is starting to prepare for their 2017 photo calen-dar. Photographers, both professional and amateur are invited to submit images from around the local area that reflect one or more of the follow-ing subjects; scenery; events; iconic features; life and lifestyle, community spirit; and people.

This is a great opportunity for local photographers to get their photo-graphic work exhibited and win some money at the same time.

For further information contact Ro-tarian Lionel Tilley on 5429 6629 or by email [email protected]

The closing date for entering photos will be June 25th, 2016.

The Maleny Rotary Calendar is pro-duced each year and is a popular item for many residents and visitors. It makes a great Christmas present for friends in distant places.

Money raised from the sale of this calendar goes towards the many com-munity projects undertaken by the club. This is just another project of the Maleny Rotary Club.

It matters little what the monetary penalty is or how much education is given there are some drivers who just will not take notice of the road rules. Sometimes this is because they are not aware that road rules change from time to time. One of our readers suggested that we should have a quick refresher of some of those rules. The most dangerous thing about travelling in a motor vehicle is still the “NUT BEHIND THE WHEEL”.

This week we are featuring some busy clubs whose achievements throughout 2015 may well see them take out the popular award for Club of the Year. Our district’s clubs make such enormous contri-butions to Maleny life in so many different ways that the judge’s task is not going to be an easy one. Last year, the Lions Club of Maleny won the top gong - who will it be in 2016?

And Claire Blowes, Lorraine Bun-desen, Tim Sinn, Kate Lanphier and Rick Vickers have all been nominat-ed by their clubs for the Volunteer of the Year Award 2016, with a nov-el entry of a whole team of volun-teers nominated from Maleny Golf Club of Rob Bailo, Tom Bertwistle, John Pottage, Chris Pottinger, Den-nis Hickey and Alan Ward.

We wish the nominees every suc-cess at the Awards Dinner, to be

held at Tranquil Park Resort Maleny on Saturday 23rd April at 6.00 pm.

The guest after dinner speaker this year is Tim Dwyer, well known as a long standing Caloundra councillor – and just elected Deputy Mayor of the recently elected Sunshine Coast Council.

But you might not know that sport mad Tim is a former professional rugby league player, playing for Manly Warringah, Eastern Suburbs and Fulham UK.

The evening’s MC is the charismatic Chris Brooker, your hostess is Na-talie Weyman, and Maleny’s Mr Mu-sic, John Mays, will entertain diners with his inexhaustible repertoire of favourites.

Tickets to the dinner are available by emailing [email protected] and dinner table bookings are sell-ing well - don’t forget to get yours in asap as space is limited.

Truthful Jones Tells... that recently one of his turkeys was chatting with his bull.

“I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree,” sighs the turkey, “but I just hav-en’t got the energy.”

“Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?” replies the bull. “They’re packed with nutrients.”

The turkey pecks at a lump of dung and finds that it actual-ly gives him enough strength to reach the first branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung, he reaches the second branch.

Finally after a week, there he is proudly perched at the top of the tree.

Unfortunately he is spotted by a farmer, who shoots him out of the tree.

Moral of the story: Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

Discover Maleny’s Past

Maleny Historical Society and Friends of Pattemore House invite you to “Delve into Maleny’s past” on April 30th and May 1.

The weekend is a special Heritage Discovery Weekend – where you’re invited to spend time exploring some of Maleny’s historical links to the past. F unded from the Sun-shine Coast Council’s heritage levy, here’s a great opportunity to find out more about times gone by.

Maleny’s only State heritage list-ed property, Fairview (Pattemore House) constructed entirely of white beech, will be open, where you can discover through displays, photographs, early maps and records what it took to select land – and build your house from scratch in the early 1900’s.

The Maleny Historical Society’s Pio-neer Village will be open the whole week-end, and they will also be promoting other Maleny heritage places via brochures you can pick up whilst there.

Other heritage listed places around Maleny are: Maleny Baptist Church, Dunlop Graves, Anglican Church of St George (former) Maleny Bakery (former) Maleny Butcher’s Shop,

Maleny Lodge and Guest House, Maleny Masonic Hall (former) Mountain View Homestead, Presby-terian Church, Soldier’s Memorial Hall, Yarunga, Mary Cairncross Park, Porter’s Wood and Woolston Wood. Historical Society member Desley Malone said “There are 15 places available to visit in total, so we hope that the Discovery Weekend will help people to appreciate our history.”

Explore some interesting heritage with tours and entertainment at local museums and heritage places across the entire Sunshine Coast - further info at the SCC website.

Fairview (Pattemore House) is situ-ated at 15, Porter’s Lane, Maleny.

It will be opened on Saturday 30 th April between 12 – 4 pm.

Entry costs $5 for adults with chil-

dren free.

Refreshments are available.

Why so many earthquakes

The University of Colorado Seismologist Roger Bilham has warned that our planet could be on the verge of wave of natural disasters following a spate of severe earthquakes over the past few days.

Since January 1st, 2016 South Asia has had an above average number of large earthquakes, of the magnitude of between 5.9 and 6.8. Seismologists are trying to find an answer to explain why Asia is shaking so violently all of a sudden? In the past week or so there have been quakes in The Philippines, Japan (2), Mindanao, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal and Vanuatu to name a few.

This includes a magnitude-7.8 earthquake that was centered near the coast of Ecuador which killed at least 70 people.

Some Seismologists are pre-dicting that an earthquake of magnitude 8 is possible and this would cause extreme damage if it happened in the vicinity of a populated area.

On top of this there are 38 volca-noes reported as erupting at this time.

Voting now open for The Glassy’sand the winner is.........

After an incredibly successful nom-ination period for the inaugural Glass House Small Business Awards, aka the Glassy’s hosted by local MP Andrew Powell, it’s now your turn to vote in the Employee of the Year and/or Business of the Year catego-ries.

“Glass House doesn’t have large shopping centres or central busi-ness districts, it’s our small ‘Mum-and-Dad’ business operators that are the lifeblood of our community.“So these awards have been delib-erately designed to promote and recognise the efforts of our many small businesses and show our appreciation for their contribution to the wider community.

“The business and employee in each region with the most amount of votes will pick up a Bronze Glassy. The Silver Glassy will be presented by the Chamber of Com-merce Presidents - true recognition

by your peers - to a business and employee in each region that is delivering above and beyond. The coveted Gold Glassy will go to one business and one employee from across the Glass House elector-ate - selected from the nominated Bronze and Silver category winners.

“I know that each of you would have at least one experience where you have shopped locally and received excellent customer service so why not seize the opportunity to publicly thank and recognise this small business or staff member and submit your vote,” Mr Powell con-cluded.

Voting will be online only at

http://www.andrewpowell.com.au/small-business-awards/

and closes Friday 6 May.

The full list of shortlisted businesses is attached and is also available on Andrew’s website.
