INNOVATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT IN TEACHING AND EDUCATION

2011–present Design Competition Student Participation, Master of Landscape Architecture and Master of Architecture Students, Landscape Architecture Program, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto. In LAN2036, Topics in Landscape History and Theory, with a course focus on competitions, the final assignment was based on an actual competition, to encourage students to understand a competition brief, organize themselves into design teams, and produce a design on a tight schedule. The students were encouraged to take the mock-competition comments into consideration, revise their designs, and submit to the actual competition.

2008–present Design Research and Publication, Master of Landscape Architecture Students, Landscape Architecture Program, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto. A key goal in innovation has been to foster design research through course work, and in particular, research on Canadian topics. In LAN2018, Contemporary Issues in Urban Landscape Design, Prof. North was able to organize the course such that students initiated preliminary research on material for publication by a reputable publisher, and for a professional design audience. Several MLA students, through the University of Toronto Work-Study Program, continued assistance with publication research, preliminary text, and analytical diagrams.

2007–2009 Online Forum for Master Plan Design, Master of Landscape Architecture and Master of Architecture Students, Landscape Architecture Program, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto, and Gledhill Public School students, teachers, parents and community members. Through North Design Office, and with assistance from MLA and MArch students through the University of Toronto Work-Study program, Gledhill Public School was provided a unique master plan to convert an asphalt playground into an ecologically sound school yard. The masters students helped establish a website, with analysis and hundreds of precedent images, such that the elementary students could learn about the design process and participate in the programming of their school yard. Teacher, parent, and community member involvement online and through community meetings ensured a very high stakeholder participation rate. Since stakeholder involvement is not easily incorporated into the curriculum, the masters students also benefitted from participating in this aspect of the design process.

2004–present Software Workshops, First Year Master of Landscape Architecture Students, Landscape Architecture Program, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto. To distinguish the teaching and learning of software from the broader discussion of visual communication, for LAN1021 workshops were coordinated in addition to class time. Upper year MLAs volunteered to introduce software related to the course assignments. The sessions proved highly successful, for those receiving instruction, which was evident in the student work and their developing confidence in digital representation, as well as for the students who were interested in testing their teaching abilities, along with the added benefit of fostering cross-year connections.

2004–present Canadian Content, Master of Landscape Architecture Students, Landscape Architecture Program, Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto. With an ongoing agenda to include Canadian content into landscape architecture courses, lectures, discussion, and readings in all of Prof. North’s courses are premised on international works, which always include Canadian works into this context. Although the discipline of landscape architecture has been practiced for decades in Canada, the collection, publication, and dissemination of these works remains under-represented, and this is an area of research and teaching that Prof. North will continue to expand.

ACADEMIC HISTORY RESEARCH STATEMENTS

2008–ongoing Visualizing Landscape: Representing Complexity in Design This research focuses on innovative visual representation techniques, which successfully communicate complex issues of sustainability, resiliency, and process in design. The aim of this research is to examine visual techniques of communication in landscape architecture to understand the full implication of these complex networks. This research falls in conjunction primarily with graduate study and research directed through LAN2036 Topics in Landscape History and Theory: Contemporary Landscape Competitions, and partially through LAN1021 Visual Communication 1. A senior editor at Birkhäuser has encouraged continuing this research for publication.

2003–ongoing Contemporary Landscape Architecture Competitions This research in conjunction with graduate study, examines contemporary design techniques and their representation. The aim of this research is to understand the contemporary trajectory of landscape architecture and examine its modes of representing complex ideas. This research is investigated through LAN2036 Topics in Landscape History and Theory: Contemporary Landscape Competitions and is related to research on Visualizing Landscape.

2003–ongoing Processing Nature: Investigating Nature Development Projects This research, initiated through the Connaught Start-Up Award Proposal, focuses on built landscape architecture projects with process based design approaches. The objective of the research is to investigate, synthesize, and publish the nature development processes of built landscape architecture projects to reveal key principles of this process based approach to design. The research projects include: Parc du Sausset (1984) Michel Corajoud – visited 1997 and 2008, Byxbee Park (1988) Hargreaves Associates – visited 2008, Don Valley Brickworks (1995) Envision The Hough Group – first visited 1993 with regular visits, Vintondale Reclamation Park (1998) D.I.R.T. Studio – visited 2007, Zanderij-Crailo (1999) VISTA – visited 2003 and 2008, Downsview Park (1999) Tree City – first visited 1999 with regular visits.

2008–2012 Innovative Communities / Operative Landscapes This case study based research focuses on communities where landscape is central to the healthy development and evolution of communities. The aim of the research is to demonstrate the success of landscape as a framework for catalyzing sustainable community development, and provide the description, documentation, and dissemination of such communities. The research has assembled over 125 examples of global contemporary communities, with 35-40 selected for publication. The research for this book was initiated through LAN2018, Contemporary Issues in Urban Landscape Design, with continued research assistance from several MLA, MArch, and BAAS students through the University of Toronto Work-Study Program. The book is under contact with Birkhäuser, to be published in August of 2012.

2009–2010 Innate Terrain: Established and Emerging Canadian Landscape Architects A one day national symposium and traveling exhibition, conceived and organized by Professor Alissa North, on the exemplary work and ideas of established and emerging Canadian Landscape Architects. The symposium held at the faculty in February 2011 included 16 speakers. The exhibition, with 28 of Canada’s top landscape architectural firms, was inaugurated at the CSLA 75 Congress in the summer of 2009 as “Transforming Landscapes”, and later travelled to the faculty as “Innate Terrain”, and Queens Park as “Canadian Landscapes”. The aim of this research is to disseminate the work of Canadian Landscape Architects, and as such the information from the symposium will be complied into an edited volume. An acquisitions editor at the University of Toronto Press has encouraged this research for publication.

2007–2008 Modern Canadian Landscapes This research in conjunction with graduate study, looks to reveal Canadian modernist landscape architecture projects. The aim of this research is to document and publish the modern landscape works. This research is partially investigated through LAN2036 Topics in Landscape History and Theory: Modern Landscape Architecture.

PUBLICATIONS MOST SIGNIFICANT PUBLICATIONS

The intellectual and writing contributions of all the Co-Authored and Co-Edited publications that Alissa North has collaborated on were equally shared between all participants. Author / Editor. North, Alissa. Operative Landscapes: Building Communities through Public Space. Basel: Birkhäuser, under contract, forthcoming August 2012. Impact for contemporary theory in landscape architecture and professional reference. Birkhäuser is an established and preeminent publisher of the work of and for Professional Architects, Landscape Architects, and Urban Designers. It serves an educated professional audience, and is the publisher representing a significant portion of any professional designer’s library.

Author. North, Alissa. “Processing Downsview Park”, JoLA, forthcoming 2012. Impact for design criticism and contemporary landscape architectural discourse. The Journal of Landscape Architecture is the most significant global journal for landscape architecture. Based in Europe, the journal reaches a wide audience. The Downsview article was intensely researched through interviewing all the designers currently involved in the construction of the park, as an update on the park’s status, as well as a critique on how the park’s initial process approach has resulted in conventional park construction. Co-Author. North, Alissa, and Charles Waldheim. “Landscape Urbanism: A North American Perspective.” In Resilience in Ecology and Urban Design: Synergies for theory and Practice in the Urban Century, edited by S.T.A. Pickett et al., chapter 22. New York: Springer, accepted for publication, forthcoming 2012. Impact for contemporary theory in landscape architecture and broad audience. Steward T.A. Pickett is one of the most highly regarded academics in the field of ecology. This particular chapter on the theory of Landscape Urbanism and how it has evolved in landscape architecture may prove to be the seminal text on this theory to audiences beyond the design disciplines.

TEACHING AND DESIGN COURSES

LAN1021 Visual Communication 1 This course was developed and taught by Professor Alissa North. While it was an existing course in the curriculum, Professor North was asked to develop the course anew. The revamp introduced basic design communication techniques through weekly lectures, accompanying assignments, and class discussion and critique of the works. A completely reconfigured reading list was developed by Professor North as a supplement to the weekly lectures. Weekly software workshops, organized by Professor North and run by upper year MLA students, are held outside of class time for an additional hour in the computer lab with the aim for class time to focus on the theory of representation, while the workshops assist in teaching the software necessary for practical application. Coordination of lectures and assignments with Design Studio 1 reinforces methods and provides additional opportunities to exercise new skills and extend exploration.

LAN1032 / ARC436 History Theory Criticism 2 This course was developed and taught by Professor Alissa North. While it was an existing course in the curriculum, Professor North was asked to develop the course anew. The revamp introduced contemporary history, theory, and criticism through the lens of the landscape architecture competition, as these project proposals embody the ideas at the forefront of the discipline.

Lectures developed by Professor North for this course include: Nicholas Gilsoul and other shortlisted entries (13 Acres), JRA and other shortlisted entries (City Crossing, Markham Centre HtO), Bernard Tschumi and other shortlisted entries (Park de la Villette), Martha Schwartz and other shortlisted entries (Yorkville Park), Brown and Storey and other shortlisted entries (Dundas Square), Michel Corajoud and other shortlisted entries (Parc du Saussett), Peter Latz and other shortlisted entries (Duisburg Nord), Kathryn Gustafson and other shortlisted entries (Westergasfabriek), Various entrants (Jardins de Métis), Peter Walker / Michael Arad and other shortlisted entries (World Trade Centre), OMA/Bruce Mau and other shortlisted entries (Parc Downsview Park), West8-DTHA and other shortlisted entries (Central Waterfront, Wavedecks), Field Operations and other shortlisted entries (Freshkills).

LAN1032 History Theory Criticism 2 Although with the same course code as above, this course evolved to be an entirely different course from above. The evolved version of this course was further developed and taught by Professor Alissa North. While it was an existing course in the curriculum, Professor North was asked to significantly re-develop the course. The revisions introduced several high profile invited guest lecturers from outside and within the school, which were accompanied by three new lectures by Professor North. The course and lectures aimed to connect modern landscape from the beginning of the twentieth century to contemporary theories of landscape urbanism.

Lectures developed by Professor North for this course include: Regional Plans – Patrick Geddes (Town-City, Valley Section), Lewis Mumford (Technics and Civilization, Paleotechnics-Neotechnic), Ian McHarg (Design with Nature, Woodlands, Potomac-Washington D.C.), Michael Hough (Cities and Natural Process, Don River).

LAN2018 Contemporary Issues in Urban Landscape Design This course is a research based seminar taught by rotating professors. Therefore, as an existing course, it is still developed and taught anew by each professor. Professor North taught the course in 2008, encouraging the students to conduct original graduate level research on sustainable communities, catalyzed by designed public landscape spaces. The original graduate research set the premise for a publication now under contract, and forthcoming August 2012.

LAN2036 Topics in Landscape History and Theory – Contemporary Landscape Competitions This elective course was developed and taught by Professor Alissa North. Premised from LAN1032, the elective examines contemporary landscape architecture competitions to understand the current techniques and theories of the discipline. A new set of weekly lectures and an accompanying reading list encourages an intense examination of current topics related to landscape architecture and the environment. Annual preparation of new lectures, particularly with Canadian content, updated reading material, and new course assignments ensures the continued relevancy of the course.

Lectures developed by Professor North for this course include: Field Operations and other shortlisted entries (Highline), Ken Smith and other shortlisted entries (Orange County Great Park), George Hargreaves (Byxbee, Candlestick, Crissy Field, University of Cincinnati), Michael van Valkenburg (Allegheny River, West Don Lands, Lower Don Lands), Weiss/Manfredi (Seattle Olympic Sculpture Park), Koetter Kim (East Bayfront), Claude Cormier (Sugar Beach), DTHA (Evergreen Brick Works).

LAN2036 Topics in Landscape History and Theory – Modern Landscape Architecture This elective course was developed and taught by Professor Alissa North. The elective was created to introduce modern landscape architecture to the course curriculum. As an entirely new course in 2008, it aimed to progress the scope of History Theory Criticism 1, by examining modernist landscape works in detail. New weekly lectures developed by Professor North, and corresponding readings, encouraged a topic specific examination of modern landscape architecture. Since much of the lecture and reading material is based on American works, the students were challenged to focus their research on Canadian landscape architectural projects. The aim is to compile this research and publish the work.

Lectures developed by Professor North for this course include: Modern – Residences – Christopher Tunnard (St. Ann’s Hill), Fletcher Steele (Naumkeag), Thomas Church (Aptos Gardens, Donnell Garden), James Rose (Wurtzburger Collector’s Garden, Rose Residence), Garrett Eckbo (Alcoa Garden), Dan Kiley (Miller Garden); Communities – Sir Ebenezer Howard (Town-Country Magnet, Letchworth, Welwyn), Frank Lloyd Wright (Broadacre City), Garrett Eckbo (Contempoville, Wonderland Park), Alfred Caldwell (Lafayette Park), Dan Kiley (Hollin Hills), Macklin Hancock (Don Mills); and Playgrounds – M. Paul Friedberg (Jacob Riis, PS 166 Playground, 29 Street Vest Pocket Park), Isamu Noguchi (UN Headquarters NY, Kodomo No Kuni, Piedmont Park), Robert Royston / Joe Brown (various playgrounds and play equipment), Richard Dattner (Adventure Playground Central Park, South Park), Cornelia Hahn Oberlander (Expo 67, various Playgrounds); Post-Modern – Plazas / Public Spaces – Lawrence Halprin (IRA Fountain, Lovejoy, Sea Ranch), Richard Haag (Bloedel Reserve, Gas Works Park), Cornelia Hahn Oberlander (Robson Square); Institutions / Corporations – Sasaki (Various), EDAW (Various), Ron Thom (Trent University), Arthur Erikson (Lethbridge, Simon Fraser), Michael Hough (UTSC, Ontario Place).

STUDIOS

LAN1011 Design Studio 1 This studio course was developed and taught by Professor Alissa North. While it was an existing course in the curriculum, Professor North was asked to develop the studio anew. The revamp introduced a set of three design exercises and one final design project, a series of lectures to introduce landscape topics from their basic components, along with built seminal precedent projects, and weekly readings to introduce seminal ideas of landscape architecture, aimed to encourage students to consider their studio designs within the discipline’s existing discourse and built works. Lectures and readings are continually updated to accommodate the continual revisions in the semester’s design assignments.

ARC3015 Design Studio Option – Putting the Park Back in Parkdale This option studio was developed and taught by Professor Alissa North in 2009. This option studio was created specifically to focus on a Toronto neighbourhood, so that students could have impact within their own city. Working with a local economic development agency, the Parkdale Liberty Economic Development Corporation, the students were introduced to the real issues of the neighbourhood, while having the opportunity to present and exhibit their work to community groups, which was also published in the local newspaper. The resultant work was published in a book “Putting the Park Back in Parkdale”, which was accepted through the Materials Selection Process to the Toronto Public Library, which aims to add books to their holdings that are relevant to the community.

LAN3016 Design Studio Option – Greenfield Burb Pickering This option studio was developed and taught by Professor Alissa North in 2010. With the aim to stay local, this option studio looked at a Greenfield in Seaton, Pickering, just east of Toronto, that has been under intense suburban development pressure for over 30 years. The students were introduced to the long history of the site through new lectures prepared by Professor North and through several invited guest lectures with direct involvement on the site and/or expertise in contemporary technologies of sustainable community design. The aim was to design a community based on the natural features of the site such that landscape could act as a framework to guide sustainable community development.

ARC314 Architectural Design 3 2008 was the first time that a faculty member from the landscape program participated in the Bachelor of Architectural Studies studio sequence, and was the first time for Professor Alissa North to teach in the undergraduate program. As such, Alissa assisted course coordinator, Professor Tom Bessai, in incorporating a landscape focus in the semester’s projects. New lectures were also developed to reveal the disciplinary associations of architecture and landscape architecture. In 2011 Professor North co-authored, with Professor Carol Moukheiber, an entirely new course outline and design projects to bring more landscape content to the undergraduate design sequence. Professor North also prepared three new landscape content lectures for the course.
