What? Alan November, internationally recognized education thought leader, will spearhead a day of strategic planning When? Thursday, February 7, 2018 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) “Begin with the end in mind” sounds like solid pedagogical advice, but too often it stifles engagement, relevancy, passion, creativity, and divergent thinking. “Begin with the endless in mind,” on the other hand, signals a simple but radical shift. In an era where our students will have several jobs over their careers, including many that do not currently exist, process skills matter much more than content knowledge and no process skills are more important than information literacy. Now more than ever, it is critical that we prepare our students to be media and information literate. While many of our students have immediate access to information at their fingertips, recent studies have shown these same students have difficulty assessing the quality and accuracy of the content they find online. The ability to think critically and make informed decisions is crucial to being an engaged and active participant in society—and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that we support our students in developing these skills. Join us for a full day with dynamic speakers including Alan November, Tim Baird, Glen Warren, Mike Lawrence, and other experts as we discuss media and information literacy and explore the foundation for student centered, self-directed learning. Title: Instructional Media Resource Assistant (IMRA 1) Course of Study

Format: 4 hours of Face-to-Face instruction during the Thursday Workshops, and 32 – 64 hours of online coursework to earn your certificate.

Instructors: San Diego County Office of Education: Cindy Dunlevy, and Jonathan Hunt

Audience: This course is intended for K-8 classified school site Library Media Technicians. * Included with registration fee: Digital Content Portal (Individual Subscription for 6 months)

Description: The library media center has an important role in helping your 21st century students access Common Core aligned high quality multi-media resources and informational text. The San Diego County Office of Education is offering of the Instructional Media Resource Assistant (IMRA) Certificate Course of Study to address that need. A laptop is required for this workshop.

Our goal is to provide in-depth professional development for support staff serving in our library media centers. Upon successful completion of this IMRA Course of Study, library media staff will be prepared to assist teachers and students in accordance with the Model School Library Standards and Common Core Standards.

The IMRA course has been approved as a 2-unit credit-bearing Extension course through Humboldt State University. Details will be available at the workshop. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Know about the Model School Library Standards and Common Core State Standards and investigate ways to

Description: IMRA 2 is the second course of the series and will advance the skills and knowledge for participants who have completed their IMRA certification. This course will empower library staff to improve the quality of service in their library media center and better prepare students for college and career opportunities in the 21st century. A laptop is required for this workshop. The Instructional Media Resource Associate 2 (IMRA 2) Certificate Course of Study is a 10-week course of approximately 5 online hours per week and 1 face-to-face day. There are five modules with two-weeks scheduled for each module. The purpose of this course is to provide support to the Instructional Media Resource Associate as they collaborate with school staff, network with library staff throughout California, infuse technology into their library, enhance their collection, and develop research skills within themselves and as a support to students. Our goal is to empower IMRAs as they improve the quality of services in the library media center and better prepare students for college and career opportunities in the 21st century. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Create a Personal Learning Network (PLN) to network with library staff throughout California Adapt their library to meet the needs of 21st century students Understand the basic steps of research Utilize tools to determine the reliability of information Articulate their role in helping students learn digital citizenship and information literacy Maintain a collection of digital and print resources and explore procurement and budget options and sources Explore and implement the resources in the California State Database

Participants will explore the AASL framework, crosswalk it with the California standards, and develop strategies -- and supports -- to address and meet those standards.

Make and Take: Collaborative Projects Reinforcing Curriculum (6-12) STEAM, Collaboration

Do your teachers want to expand their teaching time and incorporate art and fun projects into their curriculum? Come learn ways to partner with teachers and have the library be the hub of your campus. This session will share specific collaborative art ideas and include time to “make” items for The Scarlet Letter, Harry Potter, and Shakespeare’s plays; plus, learn about other collaborative art projects, cost-saving tips, funding sources, and promotional materials.

My Makerspace and More: How to Organize, Promote, and Manage your Secondary Space (6-12) STEAM-science, tech, engineering, arts and math

Secondary libraries may breathe new light with a well-managed makerspace that not only supports the library, but may also support your entire school. This workshop will show you a year-long scope and sequence for a viable makerspace within your library. You’ll learn ways to conveniently organize your space, how to promote your makerspace, and how to manage your time and projects over the year.

Hack the HyperDoc (K-14) Collaboration

Are You a Future Ready Librarian? Staying Relevant in the Future of Education (K-12) Educational Trends & Standards

In this collaborative workshop, participants will review the Future Ready Framework for Libraries from the Alliance for Excellent Education. We will discuss ways to transition your library from a dusty relic of the past to a forward-thinking Future Ready zone and ways to position yourself as a key school leader in this movement. We will also share ideas for programming and management that will help you collaborate with other Future Ready teachers and administrators.

Develop an Inquiry Model for School Librarian-Teacher Collaboration. (K-12) Collaboration

Participants will learn about several inquiry models - Guided Inquiry, Design Thinking, Student Driven Inquiry, Connected Ed - and how they connect to the standards. In small groups or individually, participants will draft an Inquiry Plan inspired by one or more of the models reviewed. Presenters will provide support, and participants will share ideas and leave the session with touch points for launching inquiry learning through the school library program.

Workshop D2:

Helping Older Struggling Readers Reach Their DREAMS (K-12) Literature, writing, and reading

Virginia Loh-Hagan SDSU

This hands-on workshop will provide best practices for how to help older struggling readers achieve academic success in various content areas (ELA, math, science, social studies, VAPA, etc.). The focus will be on using hi-lo texts, short internet texts, and media. Samples of Virginia's current hi-lo books will be given away.

Workshop D3:

DIY Chic Bookmaking and Zines in Your School Library Learning Commons (K-12) Creativity & Innovation

In two hours you will enthusiastically walk away with many styles of books and zines that you can use in your K -12 library program the following week. Get your students writing and publishing! You will hand sew a 3-hole pamphlet stitch journal, learn a variety of easy bindings and fun ways to interact with paper that will get your community loving to write. If bookmaking intimidates you, start with zines! You will learn how to manage it so you are not overwhelmed.

Making it @ Your Library! (K-6) STEAM-science, tech, engineering, arts and math

Do you dream of puzzles, upcycled sculptures, and robots? Do you want kids to want to be in your library? Join us for a hands-on session where you’ll get to make some crafts and take even more ideas back to your own space! Check out the kits the presenter has created and learn how you can make similar kits. Talk about the Maker and STEAM movements with experienced librarians and swap ideas for activities and kits in your own library.

Workshop D5:

Research Skills: Paper Need Not Apply (6-12) Literature, writing, and reading

This session will discuss utilizing technology to create fun and engaging products that strengthen research skills, but do not require a written paper. This session will include Booksnaps, Infographics, and video using Flipgrid. Attendees should bring a personal device and may want to download Snapchat and Flipgrid beforehand.

You Have a Curriculum! Practical Steps to Support the Critical Importance of 21st Century Research Instruction (K-12)

Purchase orders are accepted WITH registration form, but must be postmarked, faxed or emailed by printed deadlines in order to honor the lower fees. POs should be hand-carried after January 22, 2019 for onsite registration. Request for refund must be submitted in writing. No refunds for conference registration or other events will be given after December 13, 2018. A service charge of $35.00 will be applied to all refunds. Qualifying refunds will be processed after the conference and mailed no later than March 22, 2019.
