Crestview Local School District Message from the Superintendent The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut has caused many parents and community members to be more aware of school safety. At Crestview, the Board of Education is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all of our students. To accomplish this goal, the Board continually reviews our School Crisis Response Plan in consultation with local law enforcement officials and fire officials to provide for the safety and welfare of all of our students while they are at school or a school-related event, or while they are on their way to and from school. While no plan can completely guarantee that a tragedy will not occur, we strive to provide a safe environment for our students and to be prepared in the event of any incident. At the February Board meeting, the Board of Education committed to providing a Sheriff’s deputy on duty in the district for the remainder of this school year. This officer divides his time between all of our school buildings and is able to communicate with building administrators through a school provided radio. In addition to this deputy, Sheriff Ray Stone has also committed deputies who are on duty in the area to stop by our schools on a regular basis to do routine walkthroughs and to provide feedback on how we might be able to improve our school security. In addition to the officers in the building, Crestview does maintain security cameras throughout our campus that provide coverage of both interior and exterior areas of concern. Although this coverage is not yet complete, the Board continues to expand our video surveillance coverage. Evacuation and Lockdown procedures are provided to all staff members and all Crestview School Buildings practice safety drills on a regular basis. Crestview also limits access to the school during school hours. All entrances to the school are locked and visitors must request entrance through controlled public entrances once all students are in the building. While all of these precautions are in place, the Board believes that “communication” is the most effective way to prevent many acts of violence. This is accomplished by maintaining close communication and trust with students, and others in the community, so that threats will be reported and can be investigated by school authorities. Students, parents and concerned members of the community can report concerns at any time by contacting the building principal, or concerns can also be reported anonymously by calling the Bully/Safety Tip Line at (330) 482- 5618. This service is provided as part of the Crestview Education Connection. Once you dial the number, the menu will direct you to the Bully/Safety Tip Line with directions on how to record your information and forward it to the proper authority. The Tip Line will also allow the individual reporting the incident to choose an incident number and they will be able to call back at a later time to receive an update on the status of their report. The Crestview Board of Education realizes that we all must work together toward the common goal of keeping our students, our schools and our community safe. We continue to urge all students and parents to be involved in our schools and help to build a culture of caring and achievement for all students. Crestview Local School District

Message from the Superintendent

The recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown

Connecticut has caused many parents and community members to be more aware of

school safety. At Crestview, the Board of Education is committed to providing a safe

and nurturing environment for all of our students. To accomplish this goal, the Board

continually reviews our School Crisis Response Plan in consultation with local law

enforcement officials and fire officials to provide for the safety and welfare of all of

our students while they are at school or a school-related event, or while they are on

their way to and from school. While no plan can completely guarantee that a tragedy will not occur, we strive to

provide a safe environment for our students and to be prepared in the event of any incident.

At the February Board meeting, the Board of Education committed to providing a Sheriff’s deputy on duty in

the district for the remainder of this school year. This officer divides his time between all of our school buildings and

is able to communicate with building administrators through a school provided radio. In addition to this deputy,

Sheriff Ray Stone has also committed deputies who are on duty in the area to stop by our schools on a regular basis

to do routine walkthroughs and to provide feedback on how we might be able to improve our school security.

In addition to the officers in the building, Crestview does maintain security cameras throughout our campus

that provide coverage of both interior and exterior areas of concern. Although this coverage is not yet complete, the

Board continues to expand our video surveillance coverage. Evacuation and Lockdown procedures are provided to

all staff members and all Crestview School Buildings practice safety drills on a regular basis. Crestview also limits

access to the school during school hours. All entrances to the school are locked and visitors must request entrance

through controlled public entrances once all students are in the building.

While all of these precautions are in place, the Board believes that “communication” is the most effective

way to prevent many acts of violence. This is accomplished by maintaining close communication and trust with

students, and others in the community, so that threats will be reported and can be investigated by school authorities.

Students, parents and concerned members of the community can report concerns at any time by contacting the

building principal, or concerns can also be reported anonymously by calling the Bully/Safety Tip Line at (330) 482-

5618. This service is provided as part of the Crestview Education Connection. Once you dial the number, the menu

will direct you to the Bully/Safety Tip Line with directions on how to record your information and forward it to the

proper authority. The Tip Line will also allow the individual reporting the incident to choose an incident number and

they will be able to call back at a later time to receive an update on the status of their report.

The Crestview Board of Education realizes that we all must work together toward the common goal of

keeping our students, our schools and our community safe. We continue to urge all students and parents to be

involved in our schools and help to build a culture of caring and achievement for all students. Let’s keep Crestview

Schools the Heart of our Community.

Educate-Empower-Impact

Hopefully spring weather will be coming soon. With the

anticipated warm weather it is important that students be

reminded of the value of being in school each day.

Good school attendance is important for academic

achievement. Parents should call the school to report

their child absent. In order for the absence to be excused

a doctor’s slip or parent written excuse must be turned in

to the office within TWO days of the child returning to

school. Please remember that unnecessary absence from

school, tardies and vacations hinder a student’s learning

process.

Attendance At School is SOOO Important Research tells us that the attendance habits your child

has in elementary school will carry through with them in

their school years and beyond. Students who do not

attend school regularly are more at risk of dropping out

of school than those who do. What can parents do?

Make sure that your child is at school each day unless

they are ill. Try to schedule outside appointments during

after school hours as much as possible.

Kindergarten Registration 2013-2014

Kindergarten registration will be held at the elementary

on Tuesday, June 4th, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

requires kindergarten experience prior to attending first

grade. Please complete the form below and return to the
