Many new jobs and new businesses are set to be created across the region over the next few years as part of ambitious economic growth plans.

Plans include the creation of the UK’s first Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District, between Rotherham and Sheffield, to develop world class talent, entrepreneurs, innovators and investors.

Key growth areas will include advanced manufacturing and logistics as well as business services, financial services, construction and low carbon industries, among many others.

These high quality jobs will demand higher level skills with increased levels of technical training. This was one of the key reasons for the RNN Group opening our University Centre Rotherham (UCR) in 2018.

Exciting Times Ahead From September 2019 we are launching

a range of Higher Apprenticeships and management qualifications at the UCR to help meet this regional skills need. This offers excellent progression opportunities into Higher Education in Rotherham to give you the skills needed to succeed.

You can find out in which industries the number of jobs are predicted to grow in the region and average pay for a range of job roles – all very useful when you are thinking about potential career choices.

You will also see what our current students think about college life here and read about the many opportunities they enjoy including work placements, trips and competitions.

I would encourage you to take advantage of one of our open events in the months ahead to come and meet our industry expert tutors, ask any questions you have and tour our fantastic industry-standard facilities.

When you visit North Notts College you will be able to see, for example, an AM2 centre - one of only 38 in the country, the National Fluid Power Centre, our working commercial hair and beauty salon, and a gym and fitness suite for staff and students.

Our Retford Post-16 Centre also boasts art studios and media make up, performing arts and sports facilities.

Hopefully you will be inspired to join our high-flying alumni and make one of our colleges your college.

Where do I study? On a technical course you are a full-time student, so will carry out the majority of your studying on campus. You may get the opportunity to have a work-based placement as part of your course. You will be taught by tutors with industry skills and experience and you’ll learn in high quality, purpose-built facilities that simulate a real working environment.

What type of qualification will I get? Technical courses at Level 3 are equivalent to A-Levels and are worth UCAS points, which means you can progress on to university after completion. They are mostly assessed by project work over the course of the year and can involve some exams and tests depending on the qualification. Technical courses at Entry, Level 1 and Level 2 also help students develop their skills and move towards work or higher-level courses.

New courses From 2020 onwards, new technical qualifications called T-Levels will be developed by industry professionals and will be offered as a two-year course or as an apprenticeship. They will give students the knowledge and practical skills needed to progress into skilled employment at Level 3 and above, or higher levels of technical training. The first T-Levels introduced will be in digital, construction, education and childcare.

Did you know? Our students have lots of contact with the ‘real world’ of employers and business through work experience, talks, visits or real-life projects. Students may also be involved in activities that develop skills of enterprise and entrepreneurship and take part in competitions.

Technical courses

Both technical (or vocational) courses and apprenticeships are designed to give you the skills and theory you need to succeed in your chosen career. But what are the key differences between them? And which is best for you?

What’s the Difference Between an Apprenticeship and a Technical Course?

Where do I study? As an apprentice you are an employee of the company taking you on during your apprenticeship. You will earn a wage while you learn, working alongside experienced staff to gain sector specific skills. You will also spend time in college on day release and be assessed by tutors in your workplace.

What type of qualification will I get? What type of qualification will I get? You will build up experience and knowledge that will help you to work towards achieving a nationally recognised qualification, with a Level 3 apprenticeship being the equivalent to a vocational course or A-Levels. Some apprenticeships can now even be studied up to degree level, giving you the opportunity to gain a university qualification without the student debt. Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of subjects including engineering, health and social care, construction, business, hair and beauty, IT, and motor vehicle.

New apprenticeships Rotherham College and Dearne Valley College work in partnership with RNN Training to deliver a wide range of apprenticeships. From September 2019 a number of new Higher Apprenticeships are being launched including: Level 5 Operations/Department Manager; Level 5 HR Consultant/Partner; Level 5 Healthcare Assistant Practitioner and Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, delivered at University Centre Rotherham.

Not only can we boast a new £10.5m Higher Education facility, University Centre Rotherham (UCR), in June 2019 the RNN Group colleges were also named one of the highest performing HE providers in the region.

We are the only HE provider in South Yorkshire to receive a ‘Gold’ award from the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF), which measures excellence in HE tuition.

All of our colleges met the gold standard because of rates of progression to employment or further study and levels of satisfaction with assessment, feedback and academic support are exceptionally high for our students.

The TEF Panel highlighted a number of areas for praise including:

• Highly effective support for students progressing on to HE courses

• An outstanding personalised approach to learning and academic development

• Embedding of key vocational and sector-specific skills and knowledge most highly valued by employers

• A wide range of opportunities for students to engage directly in developments at the forefront of professional practice.

If you want to study for a Higher Education (HE) qualification, we offer courses ranging from Higher National Certificates to full Honours Degrees at our various campuses.

Gold Standard Higher Education

Support for students progressing from Level 3 courses to Higher Education includes summer tutorial sessions prior to starting programmes covering research and writing skills and weekly one-to-one meetings with tutors.

HE curriculum development is carefully designed to ensure it meets the higher level skills requirements of the Sheffield City Region and North Nottinghamshire, with the input of employer advisors to ensure all courses are relevant and up to date.

Undergraduates, who study at both UCR and the Group’s campuses in Worksop and Retford (North Notts College), Town Centre Campus and Dinnington (Rotherham College), and Wath-upon-Dearne (Dearne Valley College), are offered superb work experience opportunities, both in the UK and internationally.

Our Higher Education provision includes Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, Foundation Degrees, Higher Apprenticeships and Honours Degrees. We are also launching a number of Higher Apprenticeships and Management qualifications in 2019-20.

Validated by top universities such as Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Hull, our degrees offer access to higher-level skills and learning with the benefit of studying locally whilst graduating with a qualification from our university partners.

If you are aged between 16 and 18 at the start of your course, you will not have to pay any course fees and your parents/carers will be able to continue to claim any benefits they received while you were at school.

16-18 College Bursary

A bursary to support travel, meals and college expenses is available for students. The amount of support provided is set against a sliding scale depending on household income. For more information speak to a Learner Finance Assistant in Student Services.

To apply online visit your chosen college’s website or pick up a form from Student Services. You will be required to provide Student Services with evidence of income and your bank account details for assessment.

Guaranteed Bursary

An annual bursary of £1,200* (paid in instalments) is available to students aged 16-18 if students are in receipt of:

• Income Support or Universal Credit in their own name

• Local Authority Care or Care Leavers’ arrangements

• Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit and Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in their own name.

*Based on attendance and performance expectations.

To take the financial pressures off you while studying at college we have a number of financial support schemes in place to help you.

Students aged 16-18

Financial Support

Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

Students aged 19 to 24 who are in receipt of an EHCP do not have to pay tuition fees and are eligible for the 16-19 Bursary and possibly free college meals.

EHCP students aged 25 can access financial support from the Learner Support Fund. ALS and other course related costs can be agreed and supported by the Local Authority (e.g. special transport).

Learner Support Fund (19+)

Students aged 19 and over may need to pay fees and other costs towards their education. The fees are set by the college at the start of each year and are based on the level of funding provided by the Government.

Many adult students however are entitled to financial support with their courses, including a complete waiver of fees in certain circumstances. Due to the changing nature of government funding and the complex rules surrounding fees, please speak to Student Services for the latest details. Some support may be in the form of vouchers. You may be eligible to receive a contribution towards costs including:

• Travel

• Equipment costs

• Childcare costs

• UCAS application

• Awarding body and tuition fees

• Other associated study costs.

You will need to complete an application form available on our college websites or from Student Services reception and provide evidence of household income.

Advanced Learner Loan

If you are aged 19 or above and are looking to study a Level 3 or Level 4 course, the Advanced Learner Loan is available to support with the cost of some or all of your course fees. The loan does not have to be paid back until you are earning over £27,000 a year.

For more details visit: gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan

If you take out an Advanced Learner Loan you may be eligible for financial support from the college. Collect an application form or contact Student Services for more information.

Students aged 19+

The details may vary from year to year so please visit the Student Support section of your chosen college website for the latest information or visit our Student Services department.
