NORTH NOTTS BUSINESS MAGAZINE | Issue 10 Bringing Businesses Together

Welcometo North Notts Business Magazine

HHere comes summer, we’re ever optimistic! And with the myriad of projects and schemes to

promote business growth across the region, exciting times lie ahead for all.

You can read all about the Nottinghamshire County Council’s Growth Plan on page 9 and the assistance available for new and existing businesses as the Start Up Britain Tour Bus visits Worksop is featured on page 4. In addition to this, the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Chief Executive David Ralph has recently embarked on a series of Business Breakfasts across the county to discuss the upcoming D2N2 LEP Growth Plan which launches in July and the Sheffield City Region LEP Growth Plan is currently in the midst of a consultation period with your views invited via their website www.sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/growth-plan-consultation .

Funding difficulties are often highlighted in the media as a continued challenge for the UK’s businesses and initiatives such as the Regional Growth Funds are continually reviewing and renewing their assistance, we aim to bring you more news of these in the future. Excellent organisations such as the FSB also continue to lobby Government upon behalf of the UK’s SME and microbusinesses.

There’s always lots going on in our region to allow you to engage and network with the North Notts business community. However, these regular meetings, organised by organisations such as NNBC, Retford

b4b and the Business Integrity Group, are not about getting a quick sale. Participating delegates at these gatherings can often be an invaluable source of information and advice and attendance by the key staff of larger firms across the region, such as buyers, is always encouraged to enhance and improve the local supply chain, and thus the flow of the local economy as a whole. The highly regarded motivational and inspiration speakers which the organisers secure upon your behalf may frequently benefit the employees of firms of any size.

As part of our contribution to bringing businesses together, preparations for the third annual North Notts Business Show are now in full swing and this year’s venue, Thoresby Courtyard, provides a prime example of the success and achievement’s enjoyed throughout North Nottinghamshire and particularly in rurally based locations. All businesses are invited to play a part in the form of sponsors, exhibitors and visitors, please visit the dedicated website for full details of what’s in store www.northnottsbusinessshow.co.uk.

We hope you find this issue of the magazine both enjoyable and informative and we look forward to receiving all of your news for our next edition.

W What were you doing on 27th March 2011? Hopefully, one of the things you were doing on that day was filling in the

10-yearly census form that went to every household in England and Wales.

Two years down the line and the numbers have been crunched and a steady stream of data has started to flow from the Office for National Statistics covering everything from the number, sex and ages of the population, to our living conditions, health, occupations, whether we have more than one address, how we travel to work and our educational qualifications.

But what haS thiS gOt tO dO with yOur BuSiNeSS?

Well, depending on the type of commercial activity that you undertake, census statistics can tell you an awful lot about your employees and customers. And that can help you to arrive at important decisions about where to locate your business and how you can develop and target your products and services.

Major business decisions invariably carry an element of risk, so anything that increases confidence and minimises risk is to be welcomed. Census statistics can inform growth plans and provide management, board and investors with reliable evidence and the confidence to enable them to make those important decisions. The data can also help to identify where your business might benefit from more detailed market research to address specific business development issues.

One great advantage of census statistics is that they are available down to very small

geographical areas. So, as well as information about the population at a national level, you can also drill down to individual local authorities and even to postcodes.

Another advantage is that census data is usually free of charge. Only when someone needs a specific piece of data that does not form part of the standard range of statistical

numbers, age profile and levels of educational qualifications of potential employees in your catchment area. Not only can this information help to identify the best place to locate a new facility, but the inclusion of the most up to date data in business plans can demonstrate the thoroughness of your research to banks and potential investors.

output tables will any charge be levied. While dozens of statistical tables are derived

from the census, help is available when it comes to finding the information that you need. Alongside the statistics themselves, ONS publishes Statistical Bulletins that summarise the key issues for each set of figures published. There are also a number of ‘short stories’ that offer some analysis of some themes such as methods of travel to work, the provision of unpaid care and families and households. There is even a selection of interactive maps and graphics that make finding the data you need easier and more interesting.

The bus will be located on the Old Market Square, Worksop Friday 9th August 9.30 am - 3.30 pm

During July and August, the StartUp Britain National Bus Tour is travelling the length and breadth of the UK.

Come aboard to ask your business questions, network and receive advice from your community, StartUp Britain and our sponsors.

N National enterprise campaign Startup Britain is

set to visit Worksop — the only location in Nottinghamshire to host the campaign — this summer to help boost the number of businesses started in the uK to a record 500,000 this year.

The campaign’s double decker bus will be in Worksop’s Old Market Square on the 9th August at 9.30am, filled with start-up experts and business champions ready to deliver free help and support to the growing number of people who are becoming entrepreneurs in Bassetlaw. As well as this there will be various activities taking place throughout the day.

Start-up and micro businesses account for 95% of all British businesses, provide employment for 7.8 million people and contribute 20% of private sector turnover.

StartUp Britain co-founder Emma Jones said, “Since we launched StartUp Britain two years ago, we’ve seen record numbers of people starting businesses and creating their own value in the UK.

“By bringing our bus to Worksop we want to give people the confidence to find their inner entrepreneur — and provide a boost to their

own local economy.”Jo White, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration at

Bassetlaw District Council said, “We are delighted to be able to attract the StartUp Britain campaign to Bassetlaw and this offers a fantastic opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to get expert advice on starting their own businesses.”

StartUp Britain campaign is supported by top

firms, including Intuit, PayPal and BT — and this year it has the backing of the Department for Business, Industry and Skills.

All information about the Worksop visit can be found at www.startuptour.co.uk or alternatively, please contact Fiona Humpage, Enterprise Support Manager, on 01909 533498 or email [email protected].

B Business Secretary, Vince Cable has put the official government seal of approval on a new Access to Finance Scheme during a recent

visit to uK Steel enterprise.UK Steel Enterprise has launched the Access to

Finance scheme to benefit growing companies in much of the Sheffield City Region including Worksop, plus Chesterfield and Gainsborough.

Supported by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF) programme, the new scheme will provide grant funding alongside loan and equity finance provided by UK Steel Enterprise to help local companies grow and create jobs.

The RGF supports projects and programmes that lever private sector investment to create economic growth and sustainable employment, objectives which are similar to those of UK Steel Enterprise. UK Steel Enterprise is the subsidiary of Tata Steel that provides business growth finance of between £25,000 and £750,000 to growing companies in the traditional steel-making areas of the UK.

Keith Williams, UK Steel Enterprise Regional

CONTACTKeith williamsregional Manager, uK Steel enterprise ltd0114 270 [email protected]

Manager said, “This is a boost to Worksop companies with genuine growth prospects and will enable UK Steel Enterprise to provide a package of business finance products which could

New RGF Access to Finance grants available from UK Steel Enterprise

include grant funding, business loans and equity based development capital. We would like to hear from any company considering proposals that will create sustainable jobs.”

The grant funding element will be available to part finance a range of eligible expenditure, which can include capital investment in plant and equipment, working capital, relocation, MBO, MBI, acquisition or to develop a new business. Applicants must demonstrate the creation of sustainable jobs as a result of the project. The amount of grant available will vary depending on location, the nature of the project and the number of jobs being created but could be up to 35% of eligible expenditure. Eligible business sectors include those operating in manufacturing, industrial service, technology or other B2B sectors (not necessarily steel related).

Robert Wilkinson, Economic Development Manager at Bassetlaw District Council confirmed “The UK Steel Enterprise Access to Finance scheme represents a unique opportunity for Worksop businesses working in steel related businesses to access some much-needed funding. This clearly demonstrates the importance of our great town to contribute to a major international business sector.

It is very pleasing that UK Steel Enterprise are encouraging Worksop Industry.”

Details of UK Steel Enterprise’s support for business, including the new Access to Finance Scheme, are available by calling 0800 915 1188.

A As the number of micro businesses getting involved in rockers continues to grow daily, the national coverage this

community is receiving is making a huge splash right across the uK.

Enterprise Rockers are doing it for themselves… and hitting the headlines!

The recent Telegraph newspaper article on how the government can help micro businesses boom sent site visitor numbers soaring, quickly followed up by eight pages of coverage in the fab and glossy Start Your Own Business magazine available from WH Smiths.

In some stores, the magazines sold out within just four days so Rockers really are showing what can happen with the Power of Plenty.

Co-founders Tony Robinson and Tina Boden are out and about at speaking engagements in the next few weeks. Tony will be presenting at the very glamourous One Great George Street in London to mark the International Association of Book-Keepers 40th Anniversary,

and Tina will be MC at the prestigious youth entrepreneurship conference in Telford in July, hosted by Young Britain.

By the end of this year, Tony and Tina and all the Head Roadies and Band Leaders aim to have this ‘network of networks’ in contact with over 500,000 business owners through social media networks, gigs in local communities, promotion at events and linking with other networks, campaigns and organisations that have the interests of micro business owners at their heart. Help them to meet this challenge by spreading the news and putting their logo and link on to your web site today!

Don’t forget you can come and ‘Meet the Rockers’ at the

North Notts Business Show where the co-founders along with some Head Roadies and Band Leaders will be present, plus Tina and Tony will both be speaking at the show. www.enterpriserockers.co.uk.

F Following an in-depth consultation across a wide variety of public and private sector stakeholders, Nottinghamshire

County Council has recently published its Nottinghamshire growth Plan setting out its vision and proposals to drive economic growth forward throughout the county.

As well as recognising the challenges faced by businesses, the 30 page report takes on a more positive approach, focusing on key elements such as infrastructure networks, export potential and harnessing talent. It highlights many areas of opportunity and prospects for the region’s firms. The document gives clear proposals for long term benefits and the action plans identify targets, outcomes and timescales to enable measurability and effective execution of the agreed action points.

Trevor Fletcher, MD and Chairman of The Hardstaff Group, provides the foreword to the plan and having sponsored the Nottinghamshire Growth Plan since the outset is recognised as a key contributor to the report. Trevor is also a Board member of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and a member of Nottinghamshire’s Business Engagement Group. NNBC is delighted to confirm that Trevor will be the first keynote speaker at the North Notts Business Show in September where you can hear more about the Nottinghamshire Growth Plan and the progress of the D2N2 LEP.

Recently appointed Nottinghamshire County

Nottinghamshire growth plan revealedCouncil Chair of Economic Development Councillor Diana Meale said “Our focus for Nottinghamshire is on enabling local businesses to grow and therefore to create much needed jobs for local people. The projects and initiatives that we are delivering

will all have this principle at their core. We are keen to encourage growth that results in high quality, sustainable jobs in our communities.”
