A word from Advanced Kiosks President Howard Horn II

It has been over 15 years since we began our journey in the self-service industry, and even now there are still plenty of things that can surprise us as this field continues to grow. That being said, it would be easy to understand how someone new can have a hard time making sense of it all. Between the varying terminology, hardware, software, and differing degrees of support, anybody who is just hunting for a solution can become rather disoriented in the mix of it all.

So, in response to the ever increasingly dynamic environment of customer interactive devices and service, myself and the Advanced Kiosks team have decided to put our decade and a half of experience to good use beyond our typical operations to help readers such as yourself, to better understand what is going on out there. To help break down and consolidate the information you need to know to find out if self-service is right for you and your organization, how it works, what its value is, and what it takes to keep it running the way it should.

It is in hopes that through materials such as this document that we can educate (and on occasion maybe entertain) potential self-service buyers on the correct terminology and services in which to better find what they need.

Thank you for your interest, and please feel free to enjoy our available resources as you’d like. We look forward to helping you and your business succeed, and hearing back from our customers!

Best Wishes,

H.H.

To help people and businesses bring their services to those who need them through the art of engineering, quality craftsmanship, and the innovative nature of self-service technology.

TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM

Temple Beth Sholom is a Jewish temple in Miami Beach, Florida, whose mission is, “to develop meaningful relationships and transformative experiences by committing to our core values of Spirituality (עעעעעAvodah), Lifelong Education (עעעעTorah), Community (עעעעעKehilah), Israel (עעעעעYisrael) and Repairing The World (עעעעעTikkun Olam)”. They host programs and events for all people of all ages and passions that include music, yoga, classes, meditation, and much more. Temple Beth Sholom is not just about practicing their faith, they are about living their faith. They create a lifestyle for people to love by giving focus to physical, mental, and spiritual health. The reason why TBS is able to do what they do is because of the generous donors in their community, coming from all places and paths of life.

THE BOOK OF LIFE

To honor the generosity of this tight-knit community, TBS created the Book of Life. Ilana Gilat, Director of Advancement, explains the Book of Life as this,

“The Book of Life is an online album of our legacy donors’ stories, their connection to the temple, and why they’re giving back. So we interview our donors, we write a story about them, and ask them for pictures at our temple in different experiences whether religious, social, or volunteer work. We then feature those stories on our kiosks”.

The kiosk she’s referring to is the Freestanding Kiosk Temple Beth Sholom purchased from Advanced Kiosks to serve as the interactive display for this book.

The purpose of the Book of Life is not just to share a list of legacy donors. The kiosk shares the donor’s story, starting Temple Beth Sholom and ending in the reason behind choosing to become a legacy donor. For example, the creator of the Broad Brussel Innovative Educational Fund, Ann Bussel, is a long time supporter of Temple Beth Sholom whose story is shown on the kiosk. Bussel starts by saying this,

“Temple Beth Sholom has been a big influence in my life. Growing up in Miami Beach during World War II and the subsequent creation of the State of Israel in 1948, TBS reinforced my faith in our country and strengthened my love for Israel. All these rich memories would not have been possible if it were not for TBS. My hope is that TBS remains the kind of place that addresses social, religious and contemporary issues

for generations to come”.

This goes on to tell the story of how Rabbi Kronish brought her family into the temple, and started a 70 year relationship between the Bussels and TBS. Thus, Ann Bussel started the fund to show her gratification to Temple Beth Sholom.

Jo Asmundsson is another wonderful example of kindness and generosity. Ms. Asmundsson has chosen to include a legacy gift in her will to support the community that she became a part of several years prior. In her childhood, Ms. Asmundsson lived in a Jewish home in England during WWII.

“She reminisces, ‘ I was twelve years old when I was sent away from my family to l ive in the countryside to protect me from the atrocities of the war. I was safe, but my knowledge of Judaic practices and going to synagogue with my father had ended. I began attending the Church of England with the people that I was living with and at eighteen I pursued a degree in nursing’. She shares that it took many years before her true faith returned to her l ife”.

She came back to her Jewish roots when she met Rabbi Glickstein at an interfaith celebration, and since has dedicated time and resources to volunteering for Temple Beth Sholom.

EYE-CATCHING

At first, TBS had put the Book of Life on their website as a means to share the stories of their donors. While this was a wonderful addition to their website, they wanted a way for people to see the book as soon as they stepped in the door.

“We showed the stories on our website and right now they are on the kiosk and the website. If you walk in the door, the website isn’t right there, but the kiosk is. It’s very inviting for people to go up and interact with it” . Self-service technology is a visually stunning and interactive way to share information with the public.

EASY-TO-USE

Kiosks work great in a lobby or welcome center because it is easy to use. Any person of any technological background can walk right up and tap around to learn and read stories from the Book of Life.

“I haven’t really heard anything negative about the kiosk, people seem to really l ike it . We keep the content fresh every time we add a story, it ’s just a matter of driving people to the kiosk to actually see it . You know, you walk in and we have a screensaver that rotates and it catches people’s attention. I think it’s a great addition to our welcome center”.

Ilana was particularly happy with the relationship she has built with the Advanced Kiosks team. Starting from the first call, Ilana felt fully supported by the sales and support teams.

“I recommend your company to anyone that asks about it . They [the Advanced Kiosks staff] were so great. I ’m really happy I chose your company because even though we bought the kiosks a year and a half ago and I can still e-mail for quick questions. He (Chris, our sales leader) is so responsive. I think you guys have really good customer service, which is really important when you buy a piece of electronic equipment”.

Being able to trust the company that you’re buying any product from is important, and getting the support needed after the sale is also pertinent to the success of the kiosk deployment. We don’t just like to produce kiosks, we also have a passion for informing the public about the benefits of using self-service technology.

SYNAGOGUES & TECHNOLOGY

TBS found it easy to deploy the kiosk in their welcome center because they had already been very familiar with technology in the temple.

“We’re really high tech for a temple. We have the kiosk, and we also have in our welcome center this digital display because we didn’t want to have posters for all of our different events, which is why we got digital posters that rotate on a big display”.

TBS have been periodically updating the welcome center by using digital display to produce the highest quality images and videos for all. They also have video streaming services for people who are unable to attend services.

“Our services Friday night and Saturday morning are streamed online so even if you’re out of town, or you’re homebound, you can still watch our religious services”.

Technology has helped provide Temple Beth Sholom with solutions for

information distribution, advertisement, events, and sharing stories, Lastly, Ilana had something important to say about the nature of technology and its trends in society.

“I think there’s a lot of technology that the temple tries to incorporate because we recognize that that’s the way the world is”.

Every organization and denomination can benefit from the use of technology in their temple, church, and mosques can all use self-service technology to their benefit.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This research was made possible by Temple Beth Sholom for their participation in the case study regarding kiosks in temples. This work would not have been possible without the time and effort put in by Ilana Gilat, Director of Advancement. Without our participants, we would have nothing to report on behalf of self-service technology. Once again, our sincerest thanks to Temple Beth Sholom.
