ASK THE RABBI

Question: If I accidentally talk between washing hands and hamotzi or between hamotzie and eating the food, do I have to make another bracha?

Answer: Great Question! This weeks daf happens to discuss this question! According to the Gemara (Brachot 40a), if one speaks in between a good blessing and eating, he or she must repeat the blessing. If however, the interruption was for the sake of eating that food, then it’s not an interruption that would mandate repeating the bracha. Examples of interruptions for the sake of the food would be “give some bread to that person” or “bring salt” or even “please go feed the pets” (the latter is not an problematic interruption because the Halacha is that one may not eat until they have fed their pets!).

So as a practical matter, if you forgot to bring salt to the table you don’t have to use gestures and funny non verbal sounds to get someone to bring the salt. You can just ask for salt. One interesting side note. The Halacha defines eating as swallowing. So you cannot talk right after bread is in your mouth. You should wait until you swallow first bite.
