Wednesday 26 November 2014 - Term 4 Week 8
Congratulations to Dr (Mrs) Bertram on her appointment to the position of Campus Principal commencing at the beginning of the 2015 school year. I am excited for the future of our school under Kate’s leadership into the future. Kate and I have been and will be working together to facilitate a smooth handover between now and the end of the school year in preparation for the new school year. God’s provisions are wonderful. Please pray for Kate as she takes over. Congratulations to Daniel Oliver (Year 10-2013) who was a category winner and finalist in the NSW Apprentice/Trainee awards of recent and represented our region in the NSW Group Training Apprentice of the Year Award. I received a letter from Wollongong Council indicating that “Daniel was a model trainee and keen in his studies”. As a consequence he has obtained full time employment though Wollongong Council - well done Daniel. Fiji Service Trip: We farewelled the team for Fiji last Friday morning and reports back have indicated that they are having a good time while working together to serve the people in Fiji. A report is included later in this newsletter. Please continue to pray for the students, staff, parents and ex-students that are participating in the service trip. Welcome Dinner: Monday evening we experienced a lovely time of fellowship as our Prep parents and families were provided with dinner by our Kindergarten parents. Thank you to all concerned it was another of our wonderful community events. Our Prep students were presented with their portfolios and certificates as part of the evening’s activities. Year 8 iPad Roll Out: As part of our IT programme all Year 9 and 10 students are issued an iPad for educational purposes. Year 8 parents (next year’s Year 9 parents) are encouraged to attend the information evening
tonight in the Learning Hub at 7:00pm as it is important that we work together to protect our students from the incorrect use of such resources and to understand e x pe c ta t io ns w i t h th i s programme. Students will be issued their iPads on Thursday morning. 2015 Service trip: An invitation has been sent home with the Year 9 students this week inviting parents and students to attend an information evening next Tuesday evening at 7:00pm in the Learning Hub concerning the Service Trip at the end of next year. The intention is to take a team to the Northern Territory to visit Woolaning Homeland Christian College in Litchfield National Park and to serve the school in whatever way the team can while experiencing and enjoying the wonderful environment of Litchfield and Darwin. I encourage all parents and students to come along and learn about the proposed trip. K-6 reports and Parent/Teacher interviews: I had the pleasure of reading and signing the K-6 reports last week and they have been sent home this week. Many of our students have gained very pleasing reports and the staff have given constructive advice and comments for you to consider. Please make appointments to come to the Parent/Teacher interviews next Tuesday evening as we continue to partner together in the education of your children.

An Update from Fiji! Extracts taken from the ICS Fiji Trip 2014 Blog...
Day 1 and 2 Hello all our wonderful fans… We are only two days in to our trip and it has already been an amazing experience. The plane trip yesterday was fairly long and tiring, but some were filled with energy from beating random strangers at Scorpion Racers II (a game on the flight). When we stepped off the plane we were hit by a wall of extreme heat, however our spirits were lifted by the warm welcome from a live Fijian quartet band who played wonderfully... Moce from Naomi and Hayden, and vanaka vakalevu for taking the time to read this update.
Day 3 Today we had a wonderful cultural experience during our visit to The American International Christian School Church. It was exciting to bond with the locals who share the same beliefs and worship the same God as us. The joy from the worship team was contagious and the message that was shared provided us with a different, insightful view on sin and repentance and how it influences our happiness and relationship with God and others around us... - Melanie Oudejans (Yr 12 Student Leader) P.s Adam arrived safely and has gone safely to bed :)
Day 4 Hi everyone. Today we all split up into our groups for the first part of the ground maintenance for the Kennedy Training centre. 1.Mrs Golds Group (The Golden Group) & Mr Barkers Group. These groups started building the 2 pathways that the centre need, one that goes from the Rec room to the main building and one that goes from a house to their washing line. 2. Mrs Brennan’s Group Today this group organised and sorted the supplies that will be taken to the orphanage and primary school. These resources included school books, toys, balls, craft supplies, pens, crayons and pencils. Kirsten and Gabby also painted the poles of the bure... - Chris Muscat and Emily Monro

Science Fair
On Wednesday 5th
November, 23 students from Years 3-6 had the opportunity to represent the school at the University of Wollongong’s Science Fair. The students had worked incredibly hard in the weeks leading up to the day, experimenting with their different scientific projects. On the day, there were over 850 students who competed, from 70 schools, contributing over 500 projects. The students were asked many tough questions from the judges about their projects, and they responded with much enthusiasm. They were rewarded for their efforts with a science show from ANSTO about the fact and fiction in science fiction movies, where we learnt about lightsabers, teleportation and in-visibility. It was a fantastic day! Mrs Bell

On Saturday morning, Melinda Pallas and Alicia Rowe attended the launch of "Shellharbour's Forgotten Cemetery and Selected Pioneers" by local history researchers, Wendy and Terry Nunan at Tongarra Museum. They heard of some interesting stories of several early pioneers of the Shellharbour region who were buried in the original cemetery which no longer exists, but was located on the site of the caravan park which is south of the swimming pool. At the conclusion of the launch, Melinda and Alicia accepted a signed copy of the book on behalf of the school which was presented by the authors. This book, will be an invaluable resource for the Learning Hub, especially in research tasks into local history as it contains copies of numerous primary sources, previously inaccessible to the public and is the culmination of four years of inten-sive research by the Nunans. Thank you, Melinda and Alicia for taking time out of your weekend to represent our school. Thank you also Bianca, Tracy Pallas and Karen Rowe for your support of ICS Tongarra and your encouragement and support of Melinda and Alicia. Your contribution to the school is certainly greatly appreciated. Ian Nicholls Primary Coordinator.

We are proud to announce that we have just paid for a third eye operation.
