Farewell

This week marks a most significant time in our Year 12 cohort’s educational journey that began in Kindergarten in 2001. They have been a extraordinary year group whom have worked for the collective to ensure the name of “Aquinas Catholic College” has continued to be linked with such positivity. Student leadership, excellence in social justice, performing arts, sport, debating, World Youth Day, academic pursuits, Peer Support, and care for each other have been significant hallmarks of the Class of 2013. We keep all of them in our prayers as they prepare for the Higher School Certificate and life beyond Aquinas. It is our hope that they make the most of the opportunities that they have been provided by the hard work and sacrifice of their families and the efforts of Aquinas staff over the last six years and their primary educators in the previous seven. The following are two announcements I pass on behalf of the NSW Board of Studies; 1 On Thursday 5 September ACARA identified an error in the placement of the national average markers on

the Years 5 and 7 NAPLAN Student Reports for Language Conventions. Importantly the NAPLAN student data is correct.

ACARA made the immediate decision to halt any further packaging and distribution of NAPLAN reports while options regarding the distribution of correct NAPLAN Student Reports were considered. ACARA is working closely with Test Administration Authorities (TAAs) in every state and territory to ensure correct reports are distributed. This matter may result in the delay of the distribution of student reports, possibly to the week of 13 October, however ACARA and TAAs will seek to minimise the delay.

2 The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), an agency of the Australian

Government, has requested that Aquinas Catholic College provide updated background information about you and your child to ACARA as a part of the process of updating the My School website. As we do not provide family or student names to ACARA, we can assure you that the data provided will in no way identify either the student or the family.

Please access this link h p://www.acara.edu.au/repor ng/upcoming_my_school_updates.htm for further information on ACARA, the My School website and the ACARA Privacy Notice which is provided in English as well as 21 other languages.

If you do not want this data to be provided to ACARA, please advise the Principal of this, either by email to myself at [email protected] or in writing to the school Principal by Friday 20 September.

The prestigious New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges Athletics Carnival was held last week and results to hand for Aquinas students are most noteworthy. Congratulations to Sophie Maxwell of Year 10 who won the State Championship in the Under 16 Girl’s

800m and was the silver medallist in the same age group in the 1500m. A fantastic effort Sophie! Tom Carr [Year 12] in his last School Carnival placed 3rd in High Jump and 6th in 200m. Well done Tom! Renee Stortenbeker [Year 10] performed creditably in placing 4th in both the 100 & 200m Under 16 Girl’s

sprint double. Georgia Kalnin [Year 8] also competed creditably finishing in 4th place in the U/13 High Jump. A reminder to all families that Term 4 begins on Tuesday the 8th October due to the public holiday falling on the last week end of the school holidays. I also take this opportunity to remind students and seek the support of parents in ensuring that no student is to visit any of the Menai retail precincts in College uniform unless they are with a parent. Please keep the Gandy family in your prayers as Lachlan [Year 10] and Jesse’s [Year 8] grandmother recently died. May perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. James Corcoran Principal

Uniform

Over the remainder of this week, could we ask the support of parents/carers in making sure the students are meeting the requirements as published in the student diary. Students should not be wearing the sport uniform to school, with the exception being Friday the normal sport day. Haircuts and grooming

The slightly warmer weather has resulted in some of our students choosing a style of grooming that is not in line with the normal requirements of the College. Students are asked to consult the requirements in the diary which have been consistent since all students have enrolled, to avoid the embarrassment of being challenged when they return to school. The final decision in regard to acceptable grooming at the College will be at the discression of the College Principal. Over the holiday break students are reminded that they should return with natural hair colour. No extreme holiday style cuts should be considered as this is only a short two week break. The only allowable earring to be worn by the girls is a small discrete sleeper or stud, worn in the lower ear lobe only. Plastic keepers/spacers are not suitable for male or female students, and the wearing of bandaids to cover these items is also not meeting the uniform requirements. Could we ask for the support of parents/carers in meeting these standards. Mental Health and Wellbeing

One of the main focuses of the College this year has been mental health and wellbeing. In this newsletter we have included an advertisement for the Healthy Minds Expo at Cronulla next month. This could be an opportunity for parents to see some of the local resources and providers in our local area. Wishing a students a safe and relaxing break for the upcoming holidays.

Religious Education at Aquinas

HSC Prayer Families This week all families who registered their interest in participating in the HSC Prayer Family program will receive the name of the student(s) for whom we ask for prayers. We encourage you to send a written message to the student(s) that you have been allocated. These can be initially sent to the College office, labelled clearly with the student name and that it is from their HSC Prayer Family. Messages will then be forwarded to the student(s). Please contact me, via the College Office, if you have any questions. Year 8 and 10 RE Test On Wednesday 9th October 2013, Year 8 will participate in the Year 8 Religious Education Test and Year 10 students will participate in the Year 10 Religious Education Pilot Test. Year 10 will undertake the test during Periods 1 and 2, and Year 8 during Periods 3 and 4 on this day. The questions of both tests are designed to assess knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith as taught in Catholic Secondary schools. They will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions and will be scored out of a possible 50 marks. Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) at the University of New South Wales will mark the test, analyse the results and produce the reports and certificates. Students will require a 2B pencil, eraser and sharpener to undertake this test. A letter was emailed to all Year 8 and 10 families last week. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Religious Education teacher if you have any questions. Mrs Catherine Nolan Religious Education Coordinator

2009 Q46

The Council of Jerusalem decided that

A. only Gentiles were welcome as members of the Christian Church.

B. both Jews and Gentiles should be welcomed into the Christian Church.

C. Gentiles had to become Jewish before being welcomed into the Christian Church.

D. only Jews who kept their Jewish faith were welcome in the Christian Church.

A. Previous Questions

Answer: D

Reflection on the Gospel

In Sunday's Gospel (Lk 15:1-32) the Pharisees and scribes were complaining that Jesus was eating with tax collectors and sinners. In response, he spoke parables to them, including the story of the Prodigal Son.

In the time of Jesus, who you ate with was a reflection of your own status. To welcome sinners and to eat with them was to effectively become one of them yourself. The answer to this accusation is that those dismissed as ‘sinners’ are the ‘lost’ who will be celebrated with extravagant rejoicing when they have been ‘found’ again through their acceptance of the message of Jesus.

In the parable of the Prodigal Son, the son completely shamed himself and his father. The father’s expected and justified response would have been to turn his back on his son. To welcome him back would have been unthinkable in Jesus’ audience. In an echo of God’s ridiculous and unbounded loving forgiveness, the father welcomes his son with open arms and reclaims him as his own.

YEAR 10 INFORMATION

Year 10 have been working on a Careers Assessment over Terms 2 and 3. These have now been returned to the students. Part A allowed the students to research careers they may be interested in, and to complete an online Career Assessment Profile. In Part B, the students were to find a job they can apply for now, write a letter of application and resume for that job.

Part C will be completed in Term 4, and will allow the students to experience a "Mock" interview. Commerce students have already completed this, so won’t be required to do the mock interview again.

Any student who has not submitted a complete Part A or B of their assessment will not be eligible to attend the mock interview. Students have been notified if this is them. They have until Thurs 19 Sept to complete this. After this date, letters will sent home advising parents of the failure to complete this task, and the fact they will not be attending the mock interviews in Term 4. Please check with your child that they have completed the task. If they have lost the information, it is available on the "Aquinas Catholic College Careers Site" accessible via their school email.

Lisa Higgins Careers Adviser (Tues, Wed and alternate Thurs)

Friday at Homebush was the location of the prestigious NSWCCC Athletics Carnival. To participate the athletes had to be not only the best athletes at a school level, but also needed to succeed at the competitive Southern Sydney carnival held earlier in the Term. Of the athletes from Aquinas that earned representation, Sophie Maxwell was an absolute standout with a hard earned second in the 16’s 1500m race and followed this up with a sensational victory in the 800m. Other great results included Thomas Carr’s third place in the high jump which added to his very respectable 6th in the 200m.

Notable performances were Renee Stortenbeker and Georgia Kalnin 4th place getters in the 16’s 200m and 13’s high jump respectively. Tayla Preston, Bailey Pimental and Joshua Incollingo also represented the College with pride. Another very successful day on the track and in the field for the Aquinas students.

A gold in the 800m to go with the silver in the 1500m what a great day in the sun for Sophie Maxwell
