SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT Gi s of the Spirit Part of Isaiah's hopeful descrip on of the Messiah con-tains the tradi onal seven gi s of the Holy Spirit. As we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Messiah, and looking forward to his coming in glory, let us take a look at those gi s and see how we can use them. Wisdom is the gi of seeing God in crea on. It means that we value the things of this world only as they help us to know and love God more. The second gi , understanding, follows from wis-dom. We understand what God expects of us in dealing with crea on and other people. This gi helps us know how to act in a world that seems to ignore God. Counsel follows from understanding as the gi of making correct judgments on how to act. For example, understanding can lead us to love others; counsel guides us to love them in appropriate ways. Strength, or for tude, is the gi that enables us to do those things inspired by understanding and counsel, even if they are difficult. John the Bap st displays that gi in the Gospel. For tude gave him the courage to die for his faith. Knowledge is similar to coun-sel in that we begin to see what God wants for us in this world. Knowledge leads us to deeper revela ons of the truths of our faith. This can lead to the sixth gi , piety (seventh in Isaiah's text--"delight in the Lord"), a willing-ness to worship and love God, a desire to be close to God in prayer. The final gi , fear of the Lord, is the awe and wonder of recognizing how great God is, how much God loves us, and how much we want to stay close to God. And the desire to be close to God circles back to the wis-dom with which we see God in crea on. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Most of the me they do not call back to let us know if the person is well. Some have been returned to health, others may have re-turned to the Lord. Please contact the Rectory if your loved ones can be removed from the Prayer List. Al-ways remember that at each and every Mass we pray for those who are ill, names known and unknown. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you know? Be aware of the difference between accidental and suspicious bruises Many children play hard, and can suffer bruises or injuries as a result. With some injuries, it’s hard to tell whether they are a result of too much rough-housing or abusive treatment. Follow this guide-line to assess a child’s bruising. Most accidental bruises are in common loca ons – knees, elbows, and foreheads. In contrast, bruises on a child’s neck or back could indicate poten al mistreat-ment or abuse. Although kids should be allowed to explore and learn their limits, suspicious bruises are warning signs that should not be ignored. For the full VIRTUS® ar cle “Accidental vs. Suspicious Bruising,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.
