Recent and Relevant
The most recent and relevant experiences include:
The Internet and Web 2.0Most educators acknowledge that the arrival of Web 2.0 online applications are revolutionising our teaching and learning experiences.
The additional low learning curves for these new tools, their accessibility and the added collaborative functionality is pushing learning past the traditional classroom walls and empowering students to become more responsible for their own learning.
It is an exciting time for educators but it is also a daunting one for many teachers as they rise to the challenge from pressures to ‘keep up to date’ in order to better support their own student communities.
Much of my work over the past three years has been related to this new change in culture, one that has never been experienced in our profession previously.
My work in schools, the workshops I have run and the conferences I have spoken at have all been as a “Web 2.0 Evangelist” but not just focusing on the tools but also on the integration with pedagogy and classroom management … and supporting the goals and needs of individual schools and communities.
Four indicators of my involvement can be seen at:
a) Web 2.0 on the Shambles website www.shambles.net/web2b) The visualization of my own personal learning network www.shambles.net/csmith/plnc) A newsletter I produce for schools (10,000 subscriber) www.shambles.net/newsletterd) A list of some workshops I offer www.shambles.net/csmith/workshops
3D Online Virtual Worlds (VW) and Second LifeIn the summer of 2007 I established “International Schools Island (isi)” in Second Life, the 3D online virtual world which now consist of 3 SIMS. This project to designed to support (globally)l teacher continuing professional development.

For information visit the Blog http://internationalschoolsisland.info or view the videos at http://virtualenvironmentvideos.blogspot.com
This new tool for teaching and learning is still very much in its infancy and the educators who are already residents and users are very much pioneers.
The phrases that continually appear in discussions about 3D VWs in education include “Massive Constructivism”, “Participatory Culture”, “User Generated Content” and “Not a Game”, “Multi-User”, “Collaboration”, “Simulation” and “Experientially Based Learning”.
I am very active in not only building and collecting k-12 resources in SL but also speak at conferences from SL and run workshops in-world.
There is no doubt in my own mind that 3D Virtual Worlds will become a part of all teachers and students learning landscape … eventually.

Mobile Learning Mobile Learning, with smart phones and tablets, is revolutionizing teaching and learning. Much of my recent work is in this area. See the relevant area on Shambles at http://shambles.net/ICT/#mobile or download one of my eBooks http://aneducatorsipad.com/
References Please contact me directly with details of the specific aspects of my work you are interested in and I shall put you in touch with the most suitable referees.
Further InformationMy main philosophy when working with school communities, teachers, support staff, parents and students is one that includes helping them feel good about themselves.
If self-esteem is high then they are already well equipped to fit into the new life-long learning models where they can become more self-motivated and become more responsible for their own learning.
quote “You’re the only one to provide me with inset designed for me when I needed it. I did write to Jennifer Wisker (ESF CEO) about the invaluable inset and support you had provided for me without which I wouldn't have been able to put ‘ The Wall ’ together”, ESF ESL teacher.
I hope that you find this information concise and relevant to your needs, if I can help in any other way then please feel free to contact me using the details in the footer.
