CHASE has to raise £4 million a year to

ensure its vital service is able to continue

and the vast majority of this funding

comes from charitable donations and

fundraising. There are more families who

need our support and we need to ensure

none of these families are ever let down.

In these uncertain economic times it is

more important than ever for people to get

involved and help us to fundraise. We are

therefore calling on members of the

community to help us in any way they can.

Thank you.

David King

Chief Executive

You can get involved in a number of ways:

• Raise money through a sponsored race

or event (see page 25)

• Set up a CHASE Friends Group (see

page 24)

• Get your workplace involved (see page 26)

and communities. At CHASE we believe it

is the families who know best when it

comes to the care of their child and our

aim is to support them, in whatever way is

needed.

Christopher’s, our children’s hospice is

based just outside Guildford and families

from across the whole CHASE area come

to Christopher’s for a break.

Christopher’s provides a home-from-

home environment in a warm and friendly

atmosphere – so parents can be parents

for a while – not just carers. CHASE takes

away the strain of 24 hour care to give

families the time to create special

memories which can be so valuable for

them in the future.

Since CHASE was established it has

touched the lives of over 700 families –

and every year this involves offering

support to more than 1200 family

members.

CHASE hospice care for children gives

and young people who are life-limited –

these young people are not expected to

Meet Two Members of the CHASE

Marina – Supporting Families inSurreyCaring for the complex needs of a

seriously sick child, chatting to a

bereaved parent or listening to the

anxieties of a sibling are all in a day’s

work for Marina Crail (29).

Marina supports families in and around

Dorking, Leatherhead, Ashtead and

Bookham, and is out on the road most

working days. She says the challenge of

the job is enormous, but she loves the

work and knows that what she does

makes a real difference to the lives of

these families.

Marina said the role of nurses at

CHASE has become more medically

focused over the past few years, as

opposed to being purely a caring role.

“There is a high proportion of children

who require a specialist, skilled nursing

role, for instance requiring a system of

feeding through a tube direct into a

vein. There are also a number of

children with cancer who have complex

medical needs.”

The job is incredibly rewarding – giving

families the opportunity to spend some

quality time together by taking away some

of the strain. But this can put strain on the

Care Team Members themselves, so how

does Marina deal with it?

“Yes of course I get upset – we all do

and yes you will cry with the family but

you have to distance yourself as much as

you can – without distancing yourself

completely. It is difficult to explain but we

all have our own ways of protecting

ourselves from getting too entrenched in

the family’s grief. We have to be there to

support and help them – and be strong

for them.”

“CHASE also offers great support to all

of us in terms of helping us to deal with

the most difficult and challenging times

that we face in helping these families. All

staff members have clinical supervision

and we work in a very caring

environment. If someone is upset then

there is always someone here to listen.”

Janis – Supporting Families inCroydon and SW LondonJanis Wakefield lives and works in

the Croydon area supporting families

for CHASE.

She currently looks after 26 families in

this area, visiting them regularly at home

to help with day-to-day needs. Janis

explains: “Support for families in their own

homes and communities is vital, and it is

important for someone to be close at

hand if there is an urgent call.”

She has always worked in the field of

care and has a wealth of experience

caring for young people in the NHS and

private sector. After a spell as “nanny” to

her granddaughter, she joined CHASE

five years ago.

However, there is no typical day for

Janis. “I will check my diary to see what I

have planned for the following day but

when I get to the family I might find I am

doing something completely different.

“It might be a hospital visit – I will sit

with children who are in hospital to give

their parents a break. I might find when I

get to their home that Mum might need to

go out to the shops so I will look after the

sick child while she is away. Sometimes I

will take the siblings out somewhere as

trips for them are a rare treat.

“No two days are the same, but we

always give families just a little bit of free

time. Mum may not have been outside the

door since my last visit, because of the

intensive 24-hour care that her child

needs at home.”

Janis will sometimes give the children

a massage if they are stressed – as this is

very comforting for them. She is currently

taking a comprehensive course in

massage and once fully qualified, she will

be able to offer massage therapy to the

Mums as well.

“We have massage therapists at our

children’s hospice but it would be good to

be able to take this out into the

community as well.”

Janis has a relaxing and artistic hobby

which she loves and which also benefits

the young people she cares for: she

makes them special greetings cards for

birthdays and other occasions.

Janis says working for CHASE is

wonderfully rewarding because she knows

how much people really appreciate her

support and they always look forward to

her visits. She cannot imagine working

anywhere else.

Millie-May’s family – from Redhill

Millie-May is always laughing, reallynosey and a real hit with everyone.Emma and Dave – Mum and Dad –

describe her as a real treasure and Ruby, hernine year old sister, loves her to pieces.

But life for the four year old has been

a round of doctors, hospital, surgery

and struggle.

Millie-May’s life has been dominated by

illness and challenge. She was born with

the rare Costello Syndrome in 2003 – a

debilitating syndrome with only about 300

cases worldwide. She has heart and kidney

complications and has had a cardiac and

respiratory arrest. On top of this, she has

had bronchiolitis twice and suffered

agonising pain caused by kidney stones

that went undiagnosed for many months.

She cannot feed orally, fully support her

head, roll over, crawl or walk. She lives with

constant breathing difficulties, which means

being supported by a ventilator every night

as she sleeps. Until she reaches the age of

eight she has a high risk of developing

tumours: hospital appointments are a

regular routine.

Millie and her family were first

introduced to CHASE by their health visitor

when Millie was not yet a year old. They

were going through some of the most

testing times. They now get invaluable and

incredible support, both at Christopher’s

and at home, without which life would have

been much worse.

Having previously worked in publishing,

Emma is now Millie’s full time carer. Emma

says: “I have to watch and entertain Millie

all the time when she is at home, as well as

providing for 100% of her needs. Despite

all these challenges she has enriched our

lives hugely.“

The family try to live as normal a life as

possible, given the restrictions that Millie-

May’s condition imposes, and they make an

effort to go away on holiday which is

important, particularly for Ruby. They went

to Suffolk last year but Emma said it wasn’t

easy – they had to take two cars because

of all the equipment they needed to support

their young daughter during their break.

As such they really appreciate any

breaks they are able to take at the CHASE

children’s hospice, Christopher’s. “We get

15 nights from CHASE as well as the

ongoing community help at home. They are

brilliant. We drive up there and when you

walk in you feel you are going home. You

know everyone there has an issue so when

I am plugging Millie-May into her feeding

tubes, no one stares.

“We really appreciate the support

CHASE gives us as a family. They have

brilliant siblings days and Ruby thinks it is

wonderful. There are splash sessions for

families as well, and when I take Millie-May

to the ‘Little CHASERS toddlers group’ I

can go and have a therapy session, either

an Indian head massage, reflexology or

aromatherapy, it’s fantastic.

“They do music therapy for the children

as well; Millie-May got so excited one time

there when she was able to ring a bell.”

Millie-May has now put on weight and is

improving – so much so that she was able

to start at Brooklands special school at

Reigate. Emma says: “There are a million

things to think about, plan for and

communicate to others just to ensure that

Millie is packed up for school every day. I

still have to watch her all the time when she

is here so I really appreciate the ‘time-out

opportunities’ that CHASE gives us as a

family. Every day brings something different

and I cannot imagine life without her.”

Rhea’s family – from Croydon

From the day she was born Purabi,

from central Croydon, believed that

there was something wrong with

her baby, and after a cranial ultrasound at

two months old they realised that little

Rhea had major brain damage.

Rhea has cerebral palsy with many

complications, which include scoliosis,

sleep disturbances, breathing problems

and constipation. She has a

developmental disorder resulting in the

two sides of her brain having abnormal

structures, and cortical blindness, which

means her eyes work but her brain doesn’t

carry the message to enable her to see.

She also has severe epilepsy, and has

to be tube fed a special diet for her

epilepsy - all of which means she is a

very sick child. She is under the care of

eight different consultants at Great

Ormond Street Hospital as well as several

local professionals, and she needs 24

hour care.

Purabi’s husband left her with the

baby to care for but she is fortunate to

live with her father Vithal, now a

widower. They share Rhea’s care

between them, but life has proved to be

more complicated than they could ever

have imagined. Their kitchen looks like

a laboratory with all Rhea’s feeding

equipment and other apparatus that

is needed.

Life is a catalogue of hospitals,

paediatricians and consultants and Rhea

has had three major operations. Initially

they struggled on their own and found it

very difficult to cope, until a care worker

suggested they contact CHASE.

Purabi had never thought of Rhea as

being life-limited – and the idea of using

a hospice service was very frightening.

But they decided to approach CHASE

and it proved to be a turning point in

their lives.

Purabi, Rhea and Vithal now receive

regular visits from Care Team Member,

Val O’Donnell, who has been going to

their home on community visits for four

years so she knows the family really well.

Val cares for Rhea’s medical needs

and has a really calming effect, giving

Purabi and Vithal an opportunity to be

Mum and Grandad for a while, instead of

just carers. Christopher’s, the CHASE

children’s hospice, is also a wonderful

haven for Rhea and gives Purabi and

Vithal an opportunity to take a break from

their exhaustive carer’s routine.

Vithal always goes to the

grandparents’ days run by CHASE, which

provide grandparents with an opportunity

to meet others in the same situation, to

share their feelings and experiences.

Purabi and Rhea used to visit

Christopher’s every fortnight when Rhea

was younger, to attend Little CHASERS,

a pre-school group where there were

some excellent activities for her to enjoy

and where Purabi made friends with

other mothers.

They like to take the short breaks that

CHASE offers in big chunks. Purabi says:

“You just pack your bags, take Rhea to

Christopher’s and fly away – it’s

wonderful! It gives us something special

to look forward to. We are so grateful to

CHASE because without a break

sometimes we would never be able

to cope.”

“It is incredibly difficult and heartbreaking to look after your life-limited child 24 hours a day putting in 100% effort, love and care into what you do for them, knowing all along that one day they will be prematurely snatched from you andyou will be left with nothing, but a shattered heart and a massive void in your life.CHASE helps you to care for your child during their life, whilst helping youprepare for a future without them.” – Purabi, Rhea’s mother

“Christopher’s is an amazing place. If I phonearound midday Rhea hasprobably already been inthe pool, the sensoryroom and the art room.Vicky does music therapywith her and there is a ballet school coming soonto entertain the children. There are so many thingsat Christopher’s that shecan do that we cannot dofor her at home.”Purabi, Rhea’s mother

Christopher’s, the CHASEchildren’s hospice

In addition to the care they receive intheir own homes and communitiesthroughout the year, all families

are welcomed for short breaks atChristopher’s, the CHASE children’s hospice.

At Christopher’s the CHASE Care

Team takes over the child’s care routine

completely. This can be complex and

many children require constant care and

attention 24 hours a day. Without support,

it can be exhausting for family members

who care for the child, which also has

a strong effect on siblings and the

extended family.

This is why Christopher’s provides

opportunities for the whole family to relax

and recharge their batteries. It is a

welcome break that gives them the

precious time and space they need to

make the most of every moment together

with their life-limited child.

There are four family flats, as well as

nine bedrooms for children or teenagers

who can also spend time at Christopher’s

independently while the rest of the family

takes a break elsewhere.

Christopher’s has a friendly ‘home-

from-home’ atmosphere with many

wonderful therapeutic facilities for children

and families to enjoy. The fun times

enjoyed here today become happy

memories for the future that will

last forever.

In a safe and secure environment, the

hospice also provides emergency, end-of-

life and specialist palliative care (palliative

care relieves or soothes the symptoms

of a disease or disorder without effecting

a cure).

Therapeutic FacilitiesThe wide range of therapeutic facilities

provide opportunities for families and

children to do things that might be taken

for granted by others.

For instance, swimming in the

hydrotherapy pool with the CHASE Care

Team at hand and a special harness for

children who need it can be a wonderful

experience for the whole family. Families

even get together at the regular SPLASH!

sessions, which allows them to get to

know others in similar situations.

“Sophie has experienced so much during her time at

Christopher’s and we have many lovely memories; we

were able to take her swimming, for trips out and she

even met Mickey and Minnie mouse!” – A CHASE family.

At Christopher’s, life-limited children,

teenagers and their families can use

special accessible computers, interact

with sounds, lights and vibrations in the

Sensory Room, de-stress with an

aromatherapy massage, play with musical

instruments during a music therapy

session, and much, much more.

Special eventsThroughout the year there are lots of

fun events designed to put smiles on

faces and create special memories

for tomorrow.

At Christmas FUNtastic, a sensational

pop-band for children, visited

Christopher’s to sing their own versions of

Christmas carols to children who receive

care and support from CHASE.

CHASE Royal Patron, HRH The

Countess of Wessex, recently made a trip

to meet families at Christopher’s and to

see the developments that had been

made there since she performed the

official opening in 2002.

The Countess saw the hobbies room,

teenage den and therapies room, as well

as the lounge and recently built garden

room which she had not seen before.

runners, who hit the trails around Loseley

Park for CHASE. Last year they raised

£38,000 to help the families with life-limited

children and teenagers CHASE supports.

Both routes loop over road, track and

field in the beautiful grounds of Loseley

Park, near Guildford, starting and ending

in front of the magnificent Loseley House.

Everyone agrees that the hilly 10K course

is a great opportunity to test their fitness

levels, while the 4k route is enjoyable

Legacies

An anniversary card showing a

donation has been made to CHASE

Requesting or making donations in memory

of friends or loved ones can be a very

special way of celebrating their life and

honouring the values and beliefs that were

important to them.

For instance, one supporter from Alton

was able to realise the last wish of her

husband by raising around £14,000 for

CHASE in his memory. Sheila Betts’ husband

Roy wanted to celebrate the 25th anniversary

of their flower shop in Alton High Street with a

flower festival. Plans got underway, but when

the couple saw an episode of Challenge

Anneka which was filmed at CHASE and

highlighted the work of children’s hospices,

they decided that evening that the flower

festival should be in aid of CHASE. Sadly, the

very next day Roy died.

Sheila bravely decided to continue with

his dream and added a memorial concert

to the celebration which featured the Welsh

Ynysowen Male Choir from Aberfan -

which was formed in 1968 after the

Aberfan disaster when 116 children died.

Sheila requested donations in memory of

Roy instead of flowers, and a collection at

Roy’s funeral raised £640. The remaining

money, totalling £7,000 was raised at the

flower festival and concert.

It became clear to Sheila that the audience

had their own special people to remember, so

she decided to hold another concert this year.

She explained: “I decided to call the concert

‘A Night To Remember’, in memory of all

those we love but see no longer.” The event

was compered by her friend and regular

customer at her flower shop in Alton, Alan

Titchmarsh, and raised a further £6,500 in

memory of her late husband Roy.
