 Our Vision Bridging the gap between Nevisians at home and those in the Diaspora. 

 Our Mission  The Nevis Association of Washington DC  (NEV‐DC)    is an apolitical, non‐profit organization which strives to promote economic, educational,  technological,  social and cultural advancement of Nevisians and  their de‐scendants, at home and abroad.  Our History November 8, 2003 saw the founding of Nevisian Association of Washington DC (NEV‐DC). The organization was founded a number of Nevisians in the Washington DC area, who pledged to come together with the ob‐jective of forming an organization dedicated to creating a positive impact on the lives of Nevisians at home and abroad. The mission statement of The Nevis Association of Washington DC (NEV‐DC) is: The Nevis Asso‐ciation of Washington DC (NEV‐DC) strives to promote economic, educational, technological, social and cul‐tural advancement of Nevisians and their descendants, at home and abroad. With the objective of fulfilling this mission, NEV‐DC wishes to engage Nevisian organizations at home and abroad in being actively involved in addressing issues that affect Nevisians.   NEV‐DC is a non‐partisan organization, and has no interest in supporting any political party or organization in Nevis. NEV‐DC is, however, interested in issues affecting Nevis, and vows to always act in the interest of Ne‐vis, regardless of which political party supports said issues. Membership in NEV‐DC is open to Nevisians, their descendants, and other persons and organizations having an interest in the advancement of Nevis and Ne‐visians. Anyone wishing to join the organization may visit www.nevdc.org   Our Pledge We the members of the Nevisian Association of Washington, DC (NEV‐DC) pledge to support endeavors that will foster and promote the advancement of Nevisians and their descendants at home and abroad. We also pledge to  initiate and participate  in activities and programs, at home and abroad, that will always enhance Nevisians and their descendants through social, economic, educational, technological, and cultural avenues.  Our Constitution Visit www.nevdc.org to familiarize yourself with the Organizations’ constitution and by‐laws.

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,

Executive’s Message

On this milestone, the 5th anniversary of  the Nevisian Association of  Washington DC , it is an honor and a privilege to greet  all of our fellow Nevisians and Friends. We are pleased to welcome you this evening to the 5th Anniversary Honors Ban‐quet.    NEV‐DC  represents a vibrant  segment of a Diaspora  striving  for academic excel‐lence, social awareness, and economic empowerment. Our dynamic group is made up of  individuals who share the same dreams and aspirations for community and nation building.  The awards presentation tonight would not have been possible if not for the commitment and dedication of the executive group and members who give generously of their time and resources; while working tirelessly to make this event a great success.   We offer a special thanks to each of you as well as to our corporate and individual sponsors.   Today, as we look back on the past five years, we can safely say our group has past the  test of organization building. We have broken bread  together at our annual Christmas events, kept the culture at our annual picnic, and celebrated each other at these annual fundraisers. We have also taken part in supporting our Caribbean brothers and  sisters, providing hurricane  relief  to Grenada  for example and our fellow Nevisians as  in computers  for schools or  funds  to defray youth sports  re‐lated expenses. As we move forward, we strive to build upon these developments by increasing our visibility at home and abroad, and assisting more on the ground in community building and social development.  This year we honor two individuals who have cleared many hurdles to rise to the very highest level of achievement in their fields and whose light shine the bright‐est. These honorees reflect the true spirit of the talented and resourceful people of   Nevis, and we are beneficiaries of their contribution.   Please  join me  in cele‐brating these extraordinary lives.   May you all enjoy  this special anniversary and may God always bless you with a safe return to your family and friends. We thank for helping to share this special moment with us.

debater throughout his student years, Robelto has prepared himself for Cabinet by first pursuing careers in Agriculture as a Crop Pro-

tection Specialist and then by entering the legal profession. Before being elected to representative politics in the Nevis Local Elec-

tions on July 10, 2006, Robelto Hector operated his own law firm Hector and Associates in Charlestown.

In his spare time Robelto enjoys playing tape ball cricket with the guys at Bucco Park on Government Road, mixing and mingling

with his constituents and fishing.

Everson A.W. Hull, Ph.D. Honoree

.

In 1966, Hull immigrated to the United States. While working as a restaurant busboy, a switch board operator and a taxicab driver to support his family at home and to provide for his education, he completed the B.A. in Economics from Howard University and the M.A. in Economics from the University of Maryland. His academic training culminated in 1977, when he became the recipient of Howard University’s first-ever Ph.D. degree in the field of Economics.

Over a 35-year interval, Dr. Hull has compiled an extensive record of public and private sector accom-plishments. He has served as Senior Economist for Fannie Mae, the American Petroleum Institute and TRW Inc. He also served the United States Congress as Head of Money and Banking at its prestigious Congres-sional Research Service.

This latter tour of duty led to a Presidential Appointment in the Reagan Administration as Deputy As-sistant Secretary for Policy Development and Research at the U.S. Department of Labor. In this capacity, Dr. Hull provided the Administration with policy guidance on the shaping of U.S. domestic and international poli-cies.

In addition to his public and private sector achievements, Dr. Hull has made a number of contributions to the research and academic community. His extensive research includes over 60 publications and technical reports. He served continuously, over a more than 20-year interval, as a part-time/adjunct Professor of Eco-nomics in the Department of Economics at Howard University and the School of Business at Johns Hopkins University offering courses at the M.A., MBA and Ph.D. levels. In the Howard University School of Business, Professor Hull earned the distinction of Professor of the Year in each of the four years of his full-time tenure.

Combining teaching with management consulting, Dr. Hull has served as a forensic expert providing testimony in court cases involving medical malpractice and other damage claims. He has served as the lead Financial and Economic Consultant with oversight responsibility for the Pentagon’s $29 billion military hous-ing privatization initiative. Other clients include the U.S. Department of Labor, The International Trade Ad-ministration, the World Bank, and the Big-Eight consulting firms of Booz Allen and Hamilton and Arthur An-dersen. Most recently he has served as an economic advisor to corporate boards and senior executives on the full range of executive compensation issues pertaining to new executive hires, promotions and the design of their retention and severance payments.

His dedication to service on behalf of the People of Nevis is evidenced by his active involvement in helping to spread the gospel regarding the imperative for Nevisians to move expeditiously towards full politi-cal independence. He has addressed the two leading political parties in Nevis and has led a team of Nevisian professionals working abroad that sponsored a two-day day conference at home on the economic outlook for Nevis. He has authored more than 40 articles in the local press covering a wide range of contemporary issues that pertain to full independence and the economic development of Nevis.

Dr. Hull is married to Dr. Sandra Cooke-Hull. They live in Waldorf, Maryland.

Dr. Everson A. W. Hull’s illustrious career demonstrates his commit-ment to affecting economic policy at home and abroad. As a strong supporter of independence for Nevis, he has been engaged in a protracted struggle against the disparate treatment of Nevis and Nevisians in all its manifestations. Born in Bath Village, young Hull attended the Charlestown Boys Pri-mary and later the Charlestown Secondary School. Following his High School graduation, he taught at St. Peters Primary School in St.Kitts and later the Combermere Primary School in Nevis. He excelled at cricket and represented Nevis in the Leeward Islands Tournament, playing alongside Livingstone Sargeant and the late Eustace Walwyn and Orville Morton.

DEON DANIEL Honoree

Deon came from a very poor family. Sometimes the very basic things in life were difficult to obtain. Deon, who was raised by his great-grandparents and great-aunt, said his inspiration came from the desire to buy his own bicycle, something he never achieved as a child but that desire burned in him when he went to work as an adult. Deon held on to that desire and combined with hard work and determination, he was able to lift himself out of poverty. Deon was just an average student but believed that great things can be achieved through hard work. Mr. Daniel’s career started when he began selling vehicles for TDC and he took those auto sales skills to Daco Ltd. and then to his own company, Deon and Associates in 1995, where in addition to selling vehicles he branched into real estate. He first sold properties in Paradise Estates and then started his own develop-ment, Paradise Villas, located opposite the St. Thomas Anglican Church. Paradise Villas was a joint venture between his company and Reginald Kawaja. In that project, they built 32 homes. After completing Paradise Villas, the next project was Fern Hill Gardens, a 100-acre tract wholly owned by Deon and Associates. Fern Hill Gardens started in 2000 and to date they have built 47 homes there with more to come. After developing Fern Hill, clients began requesting beach front property, so, Deon embarked on the Condos at Nelson Springs in 2004 (now called Nelson Spring Beach Villas & Spa). He began purchasing the land and though it was not an easy task, he stuck with it. There were many obstacles but Deon Daniel never got discouraged, and, after four years, Deon was able to open a wonderful, upscale, villa/hotel complex. In the early years, Deon would be in his office from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day striving to build on his dreams. The big boost to his business came when he started going to the UK in 2000, marketing his developments. Deon learned to allow the owners input into the finished design of the homes he was building. Deon no longer has to walk the streets of London to sell his properties. A marketing staff that has a global reach and a sound reputation has taken place of the footwork. Deon Daniel also wants to continue to give back to Nevis, and one example is his proposal to build a park for the fishermen of Cotton Ground. The park will be located near his current development, Nelson Spring Beach Villas & Spa, and the park will be maintained by the Villa development. He proposes to have bath-rooms with showers, a storage area and a jetty. Deon hopes this will provide the fishermen an opportunity to sell their fish in a much better surrounding. Deon Daniel is married to his lovely wife Nelcia. They have two children, a daughter, Deonicia, and a son, Dylan.

And certainly I can’t forget the joys of roundos at Brown Pasture school and the fear of whose land the ball might end up in,

and what risk you were willing to take –getting tied to a tree, cuss in front u friends, being chased with a cutlass, or a dog com-

ing after u. I remember we used to save tin cans and the solder man would come and make handles so we would have a tin

mug to drink from. I remember going to pre-school at Middle Work with my slate and blacklead;. I remember Christmas time

with the serenaders, masqueraders and big drums. I remember pitching marbles and only wanting to give up the sucky cherry

seed if you lost. I remember playing hide and seek on a moon light night. I remember accompanying my dad to take our sow

pig to the village boar. I remember stashing away sugar apples in stone gould to ripe and having them for snack when putting

up the sheep and goats. I remember the boarding up the windows and getting the kerosene oil in anticipation of a hurricane. I

remember the coconut trees swaying, dancing and bending to almost the breaking point and then standing tall again during a

strong hurricane wind. I remember climbing fences to get to other people's mangoes and gennips. I remember rounding up a

Carnation milk can with a stone to shape like a ball and cover with paper and bicycle tube to make a cricket ball. I remember

playing rounders with my girl cousins in the neighborhood and the boys taking our ball and throwing it in the bushes so they

can get us to go in the bush. I remember sliding down the hill on a card board till it burn out just where i sat and also burn out

my pant bottom and my grandmother put two patch in, in different colours and I had to wear that same pant back to school.

Famous Nevisians

Alexander Hamilton, the statesman and one of the founding fathers of the United States, was born on Nevis around 1755, and spent a significant part of his childhood there. His father was a trader from Scotland, his mother was from Nevis. The place of his birth currently holds the Nevis Island Assembly Chambers and the Museum of Nevis History.

Bertram L. Baker, At age 17, the Nevis-born Baker came to the U.S. in 1915 and settled in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, where he died in 1985. Baker made history in 1948 by winning a seat in the New York State Assembly to represent the Brooklyn neighborhood, becoming the borough's first black elected official. In 1955, he authored one of the nation's first laws barring race discrimination in federally funded housing, the Baker-Metcalf Act. In 1966 he was named Majority Whip of the state Assembly, another first for a black person in New York. His grand daughter is Diane Patrick, the current First Lady of Massachu-setts.

Cicely Tyson, born on 19 December 1933, Oscar-nominated in 1972, former wife of Miles Davis and winner of multiple Emmy Awards, is of Nevisian descent. Both her parents emigrated from Nevis to Harlem, New York. Cicely is known to only accept roles tbat portray strong, positive images of Black women, she is without a doubt one of the most talented, beautiful actresses to have ever graced the stage and screen.

Elquemedo Willett, born 1 May 1953, famous Nevisian cricket player and former Leeward Islands and West Indies left-arm spinner, was the first Leeward Islander to play Test cricket for the West Indies in 1973, when he was 19 years old. He was inducted into the Nevis Sports Museum Hall of Fame in 2005.

Melanie Brown, AKA "Scary Spice" born 29 May 1975 in Leeds, has a Nevisian father. She is an English pop singer and songwriter turned actress and television personality best known as one of the members of the girl group the Spice Girls, the most successful female group of all time. She was given the nickname "Scary Spice" by the British media because of her outrageous, "in-your-face" personal-ity, 'big' Leeds accent, throaty laugh and manner of dress.

Eulalie Spence (1894-1981), pioneer playwright of the Harlem Renaissance, was born on Nevis on June 11, 1894. She and her family moved to New York in 1902. She wrote fourteen plays, including "Fools Errand" which ran on Broadway in 1927. Her three act play, "The Whipping" was optioned by Paramount Studios, but never made into a film. Spence is famous for having introduced an affirming image of black women into early American drama, using her unique mix of folk art and political race drama. Several of her plays won awards.

Constance Baker Motley (1921-2005), who as a young lawyer represented Martin Luther King, Jr., has Nevisian heritage and owned a home in Brown Hill, Nevis, near her ancestral home. Both her mother and father emigrated from Nevis.[13] She attained fame as the first African-American woman appointed as a United States Federal judge, the first African-American woman elected to the New York State Sen-ate and the first woman to serve as Manhattan borough president. She was also the first African-American woman to serve on the federal judiciary (1966), as well as the first African-American and the first woman to become Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (1982).

Asclepias curassavica Used to treat guinea worm and ringworm.

Jumbie Beads

Abrus precatorius Seeds used as decorations on handicrafts.

Sea-grape Cocoloba uvifera To relieve "presin" in children and for the relief of headaches. Fruits used for locally prepared jellies and wine-like beverages.

Wild Cilliment Pimenta racemosa Leaves were soaked in rum and used to relieve soreness.

Coconut Palm Cocos nucifera The water is used for rehydration especially diarrhea. Used for medicine, thatch, timber, fiber and copra.

Piper amalago Used in a tea for colds and flu and as a laxative.

Hog Plum Spondias mombin

Used in a tea to stop diarrhea or dysentery.

Ceiba pentandra

Used in baths to relieve fatigue and to counteract poisoning.

Bee Bush Coralita The leaves are used to reduce swellings, and for the use of diabetes and blood pressure.

Cuscuta Used for skin rashes, latta marks and looters.

A tea made from the leaf is used for belly aches, also used for the treatment of sores and cuts.

Treatment of blood pressure, petal are used for tea.

leaves are steeped to treat colds and cough.
