Chapter L meets the 3rd Wednesday ofeach month at the Lakeridge

Conference Center, 7118 Pippin Road,Cincinnati, Ohio at 7:30 p.m.

Tidbits from Tim

Hello everyone. It looks likeMother Nature is finally gettingher temperature regulated. Do you think the coolweather was compensating for a hot flash?Speaking of Mothers… I hope everyoneremembered to celebrate Mothers Day with familyand friends. Mothers Day is certainly a day tocount our blessings for those very special peoplethat seem to take care of everything.

On to Gold Wing news…I am glad to hear everyonemade it back from the Tennessee Rally without anymajor mishaps. The weather was a littleunseasonable but, none the less, the true spirit ofGWRRA lives in friends having fun, safely, andmaybe learning a bit or two in the mean time. Anitaand I were very sorry to miss the ride as I wasworking that weekend. We are hoping to be therenext year.

Our next big ride is Memorial Day. Jeff and BeckyWeddle have a great ride planned for this extendedweekend. Beautiful scenery, good food andfriends, doesn’t get much better. We won’t be backlong before we will be heading to Ashland for theOhio Buckeye Rally. Chapter L will provide gatesecurity on Friday from 7:30 AM-11: 30 AM. We’llhave sign up sheets at the May meeting for this.Anita and I plan to camp at the rally site this year sowe can stay close to the action. We are lookingforward to the rally as it is always a great time. Iknow that our state staff has been working veryhard to make things a huge success.

The latest news from GWRRA NationalHeadquarters is that Donald Brock has beennamed the new Executive Director effective May16. Mr. Brock has a long history in the GWRRAorganization and we are looking forward to hismany years of experience as he begins his tenureas our organizational leader.

Well that is all I have for now. We hope to see allof you at or May meeting.

Ride safe…Tim Kendrick

Notes from Mrs. TApril showers bring May flowers…. Well I amwaiting for the sun to come back out for thoseflowers to grow. Wonder what you get with Aprilsnow? Well the good news is that everyone madeit back from Spring Fling safely. I think theyneeded some defrosting but everyone was okay. Iam so looking forward to some warmer weather sowe can actually get in someriding. Don’t forget Mother Daythis month.

For those of you lucky enoughto still have your mom around, make sure she knows how special she is to you.And for those of you whose mothers have left thisworld they will know your thoughts and prayers arethere for them. (Oh yeah, husbands I know she isnot your mom but those children she had for youmake this day very special) Don’t forget toacknowledge this your life will be much better if youdo.

Hope everyone will be able to make our meetingthis month…and just maybe it will beon bikes! I will sign off for now.Take care…. Mrs. “T”

Anita

My personal favorite is the middle child who is alightweight jacket. The jacket is fleece lined andcomes in 6 different colors. It especially looks nicein royal blue with the L Yes logo on it. Last to arriveis a button down shirt in a new color called chino. Itcan be ordered in both men and ladies sizes.

RALLIES AND CONCIERGE

The lid was blown off the rally season with theTennessee Spring Fling. Reliable sources havereported that the weather was not very good forriding but was just fine for rallying and/or justhaving fun. Last year it was 85 degrees, but thisyear brought bone chilling riding conditions andeven snow. Why is this? Several scientists believewe are on the brink of a new ice age. There isevidence of glacier advancements on a worldwidescale, and increased volcanism in many places.About eighty percent of all volcanism is under watercausing ocean warming. Ocean temperaturesjumped 10 to 18 degrees just prior to the last iceage, and are increasing today. This oceanwarming leads to increased evaporation, whichcauses increased storms, flooding and blizzards. Itis the added moisture and snowfall that triggers anew ice age. More snow on the groundperpetuates itself by reflecting solar radiation backinto space, while steadily lowering thetemperatures. Another signal is that the Earth’smagnetic field has weakened by 10 per cent in thelast 150 years, and could actually reverse itself, justas it has many times in history. According toscience writer Robert W. Felix and others, thetransition between a warm period and the followingice age can occur in as little as ten years.

The summer of 2004 was one of the coldest onrecord. In several northern states, it was thecoldest. On the plus side, we can apparently lookforward to more comfortable summers in years tocome, especially those who expect to be doingmore work around the house. More days of rainshould mean more days to kick back, relax andresume retirement. When we are of a mind to getout and ride between the storms, we should be ableto ride longer distances without needing as manybreaks. Even though we have only a few years leftbefore the food, beer, etc. runs out, we can surelyexpect that all but the last one or two will be reallygood ones.

At the time of this report, ten rooms remain on ourreservation for the Buckeye Rally. However, thegroup reservation will expire on May 7, about aweek ago as you read this. You may still be able tobook a room at the Amerihost, but it needs to beexpeditious. Plenty of rooms are still available forthe Wing Ding Rally.

Congratulations to thefollowing drivers whocompleted the Experienced

Rider Course at Scarlet Oaks on Saturday, April16th: David Heim, Tim Kendrick, Greg Hauck,Howard Ploegsma, Carl Hauser, Jim Beeber, JudyWyckoff, Marshall Goodman, and Mike Murdock. They had a beautiful day to ride and I thinkeveryone enjoyed the revised format of the classand especially the “no test” option. Thanks forstepping up to make sure that your skills are up-to-date and don’t forget to notify your insurancecompany about your completion of this class. Mostoffer some sort of discount for completing it.

For anyone interested in the Basic Rider Course(BRC), Cris Hauser has arranged for another class. The classroom instruction will be held onWednesday, August 24th and the range work on

Sat.-Sun., August 27-28. Get in touch with Cris ifyou are interested in taking this class.

I came across the following article that is veryrelevant to the beginning of riding season. It isabout Limits. As we begin to ride each year we notonly need to check out our bikes for wear and tearor changes but we need to make sure that we arein tip top shape too. What has changed about usover the long winter? Do we need to makechanges in how we ride or set new limits forourselves? Something to think about, for sure.

Limits by Jackie Vaughan

Everything in life has limits. When we were young,we had bedtimes that were far too early, especiallyon a summer night, or when something good wason TV. As we got older, curfews and thefrustrations of limited spending money chafed us.We were pretty much controlled by how often andhow long we could borrow the car. Still, westretched and broke the limits with only minorrepercussions. As riders we have limits, too, and these, unlikelegal limits such as speed and right-of-way, canonly be stretched so far before the consequencesbecome very dire indeed. These limits are ourpersonal limits, the limits of our machines, and thelimits of our environment. To ride safely, we mustknow these limits and ride within them. This wouldbe a fairly easy task if the limits were fixed andseparate. However, they are each highly variableand intertwined so that one can affect the others.

Personal limits change constantly. There are theslow, but perceptible signs of aging when we finallydon glasses that eventually give way to bifocalsand when hearing dims. As we reach the over-the-hill age of40, nightvisionbegins tolessen. With anyluck, skillandexperienceprovidecompensation.

Not even the ypersonal limitscan be imposefatigue or emocounter and phave unexpec

can produce terrifying reactions. Medicationsshould be carefully discussed with doctor andpharmacist before we ride. Getting all prescriptionsfilled at the same pharmacy lessens the chance ofa conflict or overdose not being spotted.Recreational drugs create dangers that should beobvious.

Over-the-counter drugs frequently pose problems.Almost every label on allergy medications carriesthe warning, "May cause drowsiness. Do notoperate heavy machinery while taking thismedication." By heavy machinery they don't meanbulldozers or tanks. They mean cars and trucksand motorcycles and riding lawnmowers andanything else where a drowsy, dizzy oruncoordinated operator could have an accident.Almost every skill needed to safely operate amotorcycle is affected by such medicines.

Even when we're at our physical best, ourmotorcycles pose limits. Obvious ones are type andpower. A fully loaded touring bike is not made toride over sand dunes at the beach, nor is a two-up125-cc bike safe on the interstate. Even the best-maintained bike is subject to routine wear and tear.New tires are slick until the mold release wears off.Cheap tires can offer poor traction under evenoptimum conditions. Brake pads wear. A poorlycared for bike is two-wheeled disaster.

Even when our bikes and we are in tip-topcondition, the environment can sharply define ourlimits. A twisty back road is a joy on a warmsunshiny day. The same road on a cold, wet nightis a rider's nightmare. Cold can dull our reflexesand slow our reaction times. Numbed handsoperate controls more slowly and with lessfeedback, making full-braking stops less effective.Nature can brush a road with sand or mist it withrain or fog. Our only choice is to slow down and toavoid any sudden changes in speed or direction. We should never be so dumb that we don't realizeit is time to get off the road.

Our limits, the limits of our machines, and naturallimits, all combined in endless permutations, arepart of the challenge of motorcycling. Knowingthese limits and riding within them are part of theresponsibility of motorcycling. And that is part of thejoy of motorcycling. Copyright © 2000 by Jackie Vaughan.

The infamous April showers turned into SNOWshowers and just in time for the ride home from theTennessee Rally. Glad to say that this year I wassnuggled on the couch in my family room. As muchas I love to ride, the thought of braving 40-degreetemperatures on the ride home just didn’t soundlike fun at all. Hope everyone had a good time andarrived home safely. There’s always next year…

As usual, the Tennessee Rally kept our attendancedown at our April meeting. With the beautiful 70+weather we enjoyed on April 20th, a lot of peoplewere wise to head down to Tennessee early. Wehad 48 people join us for what turned into a veryfun night. For some reason I just remember doinga lot of laughing and boy did that feel good. If youremember last year this time we were anticipatingthe arrival of the dreaded cicadas. Hard to believethat was a year ago.

Our lucky membership draw winner was BrendaPennington and she went home with $10.00 extrato spend at Spring Fling after she rang one of “L’sBells”. You just might be the winner this month ifyou drop your current GWRRA membership card inthe jar at the sign-in table. Speaking of lucky, thewinner of our traveling door prize was PaulineBoderone. Fred Meyer, our winner in February, brought it back filled with all kinds of neat stuffincluding a camera and film. Thanks, Fred, andcongratulations, Pauline!

Even though our attendance was down a bit, westill had plenty of door prizes to give away thanks tothe following people: Roy & Kathy Richard, BigeNapier, Jim & Brenda Pennington, Tom & PatRunck, Jack Elsen & Pauline Boderone, Sam &Donna Peterson, Bud Hensler, Andy & JanetAndrea and Fred Meyers. Thanks so much for yourgenerosity!

Thanks also to Fred Manning who was our officialfirst “deputy” on Fred Hick’s staff – passing the“bucket” to collect the donations from our meetingparticipants. Since Sheriff Hicks is traveling the USin his RV, we will be adding deputies to help withour monthly collections. Thanks to DeputyManning for stepping up to serve!

Don’t forget to bring in your non-perishable fooditems and also gently used or new clothing for ourChristmas in July collection. You get an extra doorprize ticket for bringing in something. Also, May is–01 month at Chapter L so that means that Anitaand the rest of the gals will be running the show at

our meeting on May 18th. It is sure to be a fun nightand I hope you plan to join us.

Don’t forget that May is also themonth we honor our mothers (May8th this year). U.S. presidentWoodrow Wilson signed aproclamation designating the second

Sunday in May as Mother’s Day on May 14, 1914.There is a tradition that calls for wearing carnationson Mother’s Day – a red one if one’s mother is aliveand white if she has died. Don’t forget to tell yourmom how much she means to you (if you arefortunate enough to still have her here) or if she isno longer alive, honor her memory in some waymeaningful to you. And…Happy Mother’s Day toall you moms out there!

I hope to see you at our –01 meeting on May 18th.Your donation of door prizes would be greatlyappreciated too. See you soon andremember…together we can have one “L” of agood time.

Take care,

Italian Meat Loaf

We all know that most pasta dishesare pretty quick to prepare. Just boil some noodlesand garnish them with any thing from olive oil tomeatballs. Well, speaking of meat, here is an Italianmeat loaf that is delicious and can be served with aside of pasta, garlic bread and vino.

1-10oz package chopped spinach1-10oz package frozen green peas1C Italian bread crumbs1/4C milk2# ground round1# sweet Italian sausage1 medium onion diced2 eggs, well beaten1T salt1/2t leaf basil, crumbled1/2t leaf thyme, crumbled1/2t ground nutmeg1/2c freshly grated Parmesan cheese (or the Kraftkind)1/2c pine nuts or shelled pistachios (or diced waterchestnuts)

Drain the thawed spinach; pick up in hands andsqueeze as dry as possible. Combine withbreadcrumbs, milk, beef, sausage, onion, eggs, salt, basil, thyme, nutmeg and cheese. Mix lightlywith hands or a wooden spoon until ingredients arejust blended. Fold in nuts and peas.Divide the mixture in half and gently pat into two10" long loaves on a cookie sheet or in a bakingdish. Don't pack tightly as this tends to make atough loaf.

Bake at 350 degrees for 1.5 hours, bastingfrequently with pan juices. Cool in pan, brushingoccasionally with pan juices.Extra loaf can be wrapped in foil and frozen for ameal later on.

Bon Appetit!

Chapter L sponsored an extremely successfulExperienced Rider Course (ERC) on Saturday,April 16, 2005. The nine participants were: DavidHeim, Tim Kendrick, Greg Hauck, HowardPloegsma, Carl Hauser, Jim Beeber, Martin Siegal,Marshall Goodman, and me.

I don’t believe we could possibly have had nicerweather! When I left home it was 37 degrees,

which is just a little cool, but the sun was shiningand it was a short ride, so it wasn’t bad at all. Thetemperature gradually rose to a beautiful 75degrees by the end of the afternoon.

On my way to the ERC, I stopped at McDonalds totop off my coffee and it seems that was a mistake. When I arrived at the Scarlet Oaks campus on EastKemper Road, most of the guys were already thereand when I took my first sip of my coffee, I wasimmediately told that I was not allowed to drink andride unless I brought enough to share. There wasalso some discussion about the lack of doughnuts.Al, one of our instructors, stated that this was thefirst GWRRA ERC he had taught, that didn’tprovide doughnuts. General consensus was thatthe Chapter Director dropped the ball on that one,but we didn’t hold it against Tim since he is still alittle new to the job. Wyn who was a rookie atteaching the ERC assisted Al. I think she did a nicejob for her first time.

We filled out all of our paperwork including thenecessary motorcycle endorsement on our drivers’licenses, proof of insurance, and the T-CLOCSinspection. I was so happy that when I washed mybike the day before I just happened to notice thatone of my headlights was out. Knowing that the1800 headlights burn out often I had a replacementin my trunk. I was able to get it changed with aphone call to Jim Pennington (thanks Jim). I wasso happy I noticed it was out. How embarrassingwould it be to show up to an ERC course with aheadlight out? I aired up the tires, had a full tank ofgas, and oil change a couple of weeks ago. I wasready. Don’t ya know it; my headlight was outagain the next morning. I’m not so sure theybelieved me when I said I had changed the bulb theday before. Carl and others worked with it. Itburned for awhile and then went out again for good.So much for my trying to be prepared.

We did our warm-up ride, weaving and turning, slow riding, pause and go, riding over a two by four, and riding with one hand (which by the way is agreat deal harder than you think). Riding down theroad with one hand is a piece of cake. Try theoffset cone weave with one hand. It is verychallenging.

We progressed to my nightmare, slow speed U-turns in a small space, AKA the box. I think I finallydid it one time. I love watching the riders do itseemingly effortlessly. Great job guys! Each time Itake the ERC I improve on that a great deal. I amimproving the head turn and am determined tomaster those slow speed turns! Later we moved onto higher speed turns where you could choose from

9

three different turns, tight, medium, and fairly wide. You can add a little speed on those and I am muchmore comfortable on those.

Later in the day we progressed to working on quickstopping (close to a panic stop), swerving to eitherdirection on command, and starting into a curve, then imagining that there is an obstacle in our wayand having to do a quick stop. The emphasis therewas to make sure you straighten up your bikecompletely before stopping. That was one of myfavorite drills. Learning to stop after going into aturn is really important, and something that doesnot necessarily come naturally. If you don’tstraighten up that bike, there is a good chance youwill go down.

The new format of the ERC makes both the writtenand the riding tests optional. We gladly opted tonot take the tests and call it a day. And a great dayit was. I think we all learned some things that willhelp us improve our riding skills and be safer ridersout on the roads.

This is my third ERC and I highly recommend oneof these classes to all riders, and co-riders (theycan be taken two-up). You can never be too wellprepared.

Thanks Al and Wyn, and all you guys for a greatclass and a great day.

And remember, “Safety IsFor Life”.

Chapter Historian – Ohio Couple ofthe Year 2005

By Jim Pennington (and Brenda too)

Well, what happened last month? Seems that wewere really busy with my mother in the nursinghome and just didn’t get a newsletter article to Cris. Our apology … just couldn’t fit in the time.

Several members of Chapter L attended the SpringFling in Tennessee recently. We ran into many oldfriends from TN including Zearl & Jane Black, Sam& Nancy Winters, John & Louise Koty, Tom &Kathy Peck, Tom & Carolyn Jarrell and manyothers. We saw SW Ohio members everywhere, especially those from L, A-2, E-2, X-2 and ofcourse, the Ohio District Staff. Ohio District wonthe award for the most members registered fromout of Region N. Thanks Ohio members for

registering for the rally. It seemed like everyonehad fun, bought chrome or some other goodiesfrom the vendors and some even found a break inthe weather to have a ride or two. Everyone hadsome very drizzly times at the rally and a chilly; nomake that downright cold ride home. We need toreflect on some history here and some of the olderchapter members can remember some very cold, rainy, icy and otherwise unpleasant rides comingback from the Spring Fling. We’ve all made itthough and had something to talk about later!

We’ve lost another former member. The oldermembers of the chapter remember Ed Koch. Edhad been very sick with cancer for quite sometime.Ed lost his battle on Monday April 25, 2005.Several members gathered to pay their lastrespects to our friend Ed and to give a hug to hiswife Barb. Ed was an active rider until his illnessand enjoyed traveling. In 1994 we met up with theRich & Nancy Hesse group that included Ed andBarb up in New Hampshire. Ed had arrangedmotel rooms for us and I don’t think I’ve had amotel room for $36 a night before or after that trip.Ed was a terrific negotiator when it came tospending a few bucks on motels. Anyway, eventhough Ed gave up motorcycling, he did not forgethis friends. Chapter L used Ed’s business forembroidery work for our Chapter shirts untilrecently. I am sure a card would help Barb make itthrough this time. If you would care to send her acard, her address is: 20263 Alpine Drive, Lawrenceburg, IN 47025.

Brenda is on the countdown to retirement at theend of this month and when that happens we, asDistrict Couple of the Year, plan on visiting variouschapters and chapter events as we can this year.

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Todayis a gift. That's why it's called the present! Life isshort, … have to get time to findsome longer roads and makesome more history.
