Chapter L meets the 3rd Wednesday ofeach month at the Lakeridge

Conference Center, 7118 Pippin Road,Cincinnati, Ohio at 7:30 p.m.

Tidbits from TimHello everyone. I hope you were able to enjoyEaster with your family & friends. Anita and I wereoverrun with teenagers and had to eat dinner inshifts but it was a very good weekend for us.

I have some news from the spring officer’s meetingin Columbus, which I attended on April 2nd.Chapter L was given the Quarterly NewsletterAward for the 1st quarter of 2005 for the southwestsection. This is in recognition of the consistentlyhigh quality of our newsletter, which is producedevery month by our Newsletter Editor, Cris Hauser.Tell her congratulations & thanks the next time yousee her!

We’ve had a bit of unexpected news from GWRRANational Headquarters. Mike Wright, long timePresident and Executive Director has announcedhis intention to retire as of April 30th. He willcontinue in that role until a replacement is namedand as a consultant to the organization after that.He and his wife Judy will be moving back to theirnative Ft. Wayne, Indiana in the near future. Wewish him well and send many thanks for hisleadership and dedication to the GWRRA.

The mall show was a big success. We didn’t havethe number of bikes we had hoped due to theweather but we had enough to peaks our visitor’sinterests. Several membership applications werehanded out along with other printed materials.

This truly was an all-chapter mall show withparticipants from several chapters in Ohio, Indiana& Kentucky. Bikes were arranged for appearancerather than by chapter affiliation. This was a goodway of letting everyone get to know each other anddid not inflame the competitive nature betweenchapters.

I want to thank Carl Hauser & Jim Pennington fororganizing the show. They took care of everythingthus giving me time to do the other tasks a CD hasto do. I never had to give it a second thoughtbecause I knew it was in very good hands.

Other District of Ohio News

Ohio will be implementing a sectional travelingplaque next spring in addition to the current districtand region level traveling plaques.

Hotel rooms are “mostly gone” for Buckeye Rally. Please make reservations soon if you want toattend.

The state staff is planning some changes for thisyear’s rally. Several new food vendors are lined upand a couple new games are being planned.

That’s all I have for now… Ridesafe…

Notes from Mrs. T

April is the month of spring forward in time, springbreaks from school and spring flings for GWRRA.Just like the college kids the Gold Wingers want aweek away to play. Not on a beach though. Weprefer the winding curves and beautiful mountainair so watch out Tennessee we will be hitting yourroads very soon.

We won’t be preparing for our trip by packingmultiple cases of alcohol, scoping out the bestplace for a new tattoo or wondering how we will getaround our parents knowing that there will be boyson this trip. We will be changing tires, oil, checkingCB’s and planning to get a tattoo of sorts in theform of pin striping. There is some rumor aboutneeding to exchange seasonal air in tires too but Ithink Tom Runck will be helping us with that topic.

By the time you read this Chapter L will have heldour annual TECH DAY held at Jack Elsen’s tomake sure these preparations are done well. Healso loves to help each and every bike owneraccessorize well. (There is plenty of chromeavailable for the underdressed bike). Needless tosay we will all be ready for the trip to the SmokeyMountains at the end of the month to have our“fling”.

On a serious note please remember to be safe aswe start getting those bikes out on the road andenjoy!

Take care….Mrs. “T”

Anita

Pins & PatchesHi Everyone! Tom and I survived our first EasterEgg Hunt with our grandkids. This was the firsttime that I saw an Easter Bunny wearing FireDepartment Boots. That should have tipped us offthat the Rabbit had laid all his plastic eggs in asoggy field. Well, we all ended up muddy and dampbut had a good time. If you plan on attending afuture Gold Wing event and could use an extraChapter shirt for those April showers ahead, wellhunt no further. Just hop on back after our nextChapter meeting and we will be happy to help you.Hope to see everyone at April’s Chapter L meeting.

RALLIES AND CONCIERGE

What about these gas prices? It now takes double-digits to feed the Wing. There has always beensomething I can’t understand about the way gas ispriced. It seems that no matter what regular gascosts, plus grade is always ten cents higher. If Xpercent of Y barrels of petroleum is distilled intoregular grade gasoline, and Z percent of regulargrade is then further refined to plus grade, and theprice of Y goes up by R percent, why doesn’t Zincrease by at least R also? Or D either? Anothermystery is how can the price for gas that’s alreadyin the ground at the station increase? What abouthow the price jumps overnight at every station inthe area?

We could go on and on about how phony gasprices are, but there is one hope for rising prices towhich we can cling - how great it would be to ridearound with hardly any other traffic. We wouldn’tneed so many red lights and stop signs. The policecouldn’t afford to run patrols leaving us free tomake U-turns or any other useful maneuverwhenever we want. Imagine a group of us enteringa big, empty restaurant with servers fighting eachother to get us stuff, or never needing advancedreservations on the road at any motel we want.Sure, Mike Wright will probably quit GWRRA andbecome Pope before any of that happens!

There is precious little time to decide whether to goto the Tennessee Rally. We have decided to waituntil the last minute and see how far gas pricesmight drop. The motel reservations at the OakTree Lodge for Chapter L have expired, but youmay still be able to secure one. Several Chapter Lmembers have reserved rooms there. There are

plenty of rooms still available for the Buckeye andWing Ding rallies. Also, Buckeye Rally forms areavailable on the events table. APR 22-23: TENNESSEE SPRING FLING PigeonForge, TN., Oak Tree Lodge 865-428-7500

Another first for Chapter L andthis one is really good. CrisHauser was the first inductee

in the “Survivor” club for Region D. No, we don’tget to vote her off her motorcycle. This is a formalrecognition of her training and protective riding gearsaving her life. Here is an article about thisprogram from our Region D Educators, Mike andLori Stiger.

Reviving the GWRRA Survivor Program"Testimony that GWRRA Rider Education Program"Saves Lives"A few years back the Rider Education Programintroduced a new program call the "SurvivorProgram". Its purpose was simple. Like the "Ladderof Risk" we talk about in the new ERC class, thingshappen and accidents can occur. Some are seriousbut because of their use of Proper Riding Appareland/or training they received though the RiderEducation Program, their life was spared. They arethe living proof why our Educational programs"Saves Lives".

Air Force Museum Ride in ReviewOn Saturday, March 12th eleven of us were countedas part of the 1.2 Million annual visitors at theNational Museum of the United States Air Force onWright-Patterson AFB near Dayton, OH. This wasour second trip there in as many years and I haveto say that the place is just amazing.

Since my dad was not a military guy, I didn’t growup with that in my background. Both of my uncleswere in WWII, one as an Air Force pilot and one asa navigator, so I have relived their experiences atmany family gatherings. To climb in a plane and flyis still just incredible to me, especially when seeingsome of the machines from long ago that actuallygot off the ground. They talk about us taking riskson two-wheels – heck, that’s nothing compared towhat some of these people climbed into and usedto defied gravity. Guts, I don’t know – personally, Ithink they just had to have a screw or two loose.

The museum is arranged in such a way that youget to experience the early years, World War I, theInter War Years, World War II, Korean War,Vietnam War, the Cold War period, modern flight, missiles, space flight, and Presidential planes.Included in the walking tour is memorabilia fromeach era including uniforms, flight books, and well-preserved personal items belonging to formerenlisted personnel. I still think about the displaysdevoted to former POWs. The ingenuity and

resourcefulness of the American soldier is just hardto believe.

Besides enjoying the walking tour, we also visitedthe IMAX® theater on the premises and enjoyed afeature film called “Fighter Pilot: Operation RedFlag.” The film is about an American fighter pilot,John Stratton, as he participates in a high techmilitary exercise called “Red Flag” held at NellisAFB near Las Vegas, NV. Red Flag bringstogether the US Air Force and its allies for twoweeks of intense training, simulating actual combat. After watching this I had a new appreciation forwhat our military does to protect our freedom.Personally, I think every kid in school should see it.I know I walked away with a renewed sense ofpatriotism and respect for our military.

The museum also hosts a lot of aviation events andthis year from September 30-October 2 they will bebringing a World War I aviation drama to themuseum. The Dawn Patrol Rendezvous WorldWar I Fly-In will feature original and reproductionWWI aircraft flying over the museum and launchingand landing on the rear field. If you are anaficionado of old planes and precision stunt flying, you won’t want to miss this opportunity.

Another thing I learned about the museum is thatthey restore all of the aircraft to authentic conditionon site through their Restoration Division. Theyfocus on the finer details to make sure that everyaircraft on display is restored to its vintagecondition and is accurate in markings and colorschemes. You can tour the restoration facility bysigning up for the museums’ Behind the Scenestour offered monthly during the fall, winter andspring and each Friday in the summer.

After finishing our tour, many headed for theextensive gift shop. Browsing all the items for salewas as much fun as the museum.

After burning a few calories, we decided to head tothe Quaker Steak N Lube in Beavercreek for anearly dinner. The food was delicious and thecompany was great. Thanks to Steve Albert, Tim &Anita Kendrick, Bud & Peggy Smith, HowardPloegsma & Donna, and Mike Scherzinger and hisfather-in-law Ed for joining Tom and me for a greatday of informative fun.

God Bless America!

Pat

Gold Wing Recipe ReviewBy: Fred Meyers

Ever since I was a kid, rhubarb piehas been my favorite. I remember alarge clump of rhubarb that grew in one of ourflowerbeds in our back. My Mom always fixed thispie whenever we came back home to visit.

Well it as been five years since my Mom passedaway and I have finally came to the realization thatI no longer had a resource for Mom’s rhubarb pie.During my last visit to my Dad’s home, I wentthrough my Mom’s recipe box and “voila”, therewas her recipe for Rhubarb Custard Pie. I fixed thisa couple of weeks ago with fresh rhubarb I found atFindley Market that had been imported fromFlorida. It seems as though their growing seasonbegins before ours.

I hope you enjoy this pie as much as I do. I took therecipe and increased it by 50% to fit one of thosedeep pie shells. Don’t worry about a half egg; justuse two instead of one. Heck, if you’re going tobake a pie, why not bake a big one.

Bon Appetit!

Rhubarb Custard Pie

2 cups diced rhubarb1-1/4 cup granulated sugar1/2 cup flour1 eggPinch of salt1/2 tsp. cinnamon1 Tbl butter1/2 cup milk

Combine the sugar, flour, egg, milk, salt, butter &cinnamon with a mixer. Fold in the diced rhubarb.Pour into a store bought or home made pie shell.Bake at 15 minutes at 400 degrees and then for 35minutes at 350 degrees.
